yesterday morning my days are all jumbled up right now but yesterday the running backs met with the media EJ barel and and EM had had his press conference and at the end of it he was done taking questions and he said hey I got one more thing to add I heard the news about Greg who’s been doing here radio here for a long time and I just wanted him to know that we’re I’m fighting with him and for him and I’m praying for him and I hope all Husker Nation praise with Jeremiah Sirles yesterday he said that just goes to show you that the how close nit this community is and and how much Gr beans after his press conference last night and and saying that he’s fighting for Greg and with Greg and and prayers to him so um huge fan of EMT Johnson around here all right well also yesterday about this time yesterday almost 24 hours ago husar football picked up a commitment out of the transfer portal in Vince genone he’s out of North Plat Nebraska but has spent the last two seasons at Montana he was uh in the 2022 signing class here out of Nebraska went to Montana He red shirted his first year and then played some on special teams but didn’t have you know huge role there at Montana but I think he’s he’s your kind of guy that this coaching staff really likes if you you go back to what he did in high school and he was a a standout athlete in multiple Sports a two-time state wrestling champion and get this he’s in the track and field state finals in the 100 meter dash he finished third Cole you got any guesses on who he finished third behind I do not who who who was it two two current Huskers Malak Coleman I think Camden might Malachi Coleman and jayen Lloyd how about that so he’s fast fast super athletic and a HomeTown kid so he um has he announced last night he posted on his social media on his ex account committed with a picture and he said thank you for the opportunity so there is an addition out of the transfer portal for Nebraska football m still here a couple of those once Spring ball closes and if there’s any additions for from NE into the portal we haven’t heard that very much really since coach R and his staff has been here but certainly could still be potential to happen and then if they go Target any other guys in the transfer portal too but um always great and I know this coaching St they’re going to that’s a big priority for them is is to Target those instate kids so here is um Nebraska kid coming home that once he went in the portal it sounds like Nebraska really went really quickly to to reach out and and show their interest so uh there is some news there for Nebraska football uh baseball last night tough loss in the midweek another one in the midweek as they fall 9 to4 to Kansas just um got behind early after Kansas put up a four spot in the second but um and just could not get it going to to get back into it they got a couple of midweek games next week big onnes with kraton at kraton on Tuesday and then against Kansas State here at home on Wednesday currently 23 in the RBI so but again you have those two midweek games and and Iowa at home this weekend just two home series left for Nebraska baseball so and and they’re right there in the the hunt for the Big 10 title so getting it done on the weekends and I I know it’s disappointing for the week night but uh I you know I kind of I know a lot of people are get upset about it Cole but for me I I still just am so excited about what they’re doing on the weekends and the fact that they’re still absolutely right there in contention for a big 10 title to me that’s that is where I I guess rest my laurels we definitely are still in contention I mean I do feel like that that you know the pig 10 is for both I don’t know baseball and softball it’s kind of wide open this year so um and then but it was also fireworks happening across the way at bowan Stadium as Nebraska softball had a double header against Iowa two walk-offs two walk-off wins for the Huskers over Iowa um they’ve just done this I I asked asked Matt Smith Their sports information director how many times have they come back from behind a win games he said they’ve trailed 16 of their 27 wins but you know there’s just something about once you do it once and then you they’ve done it so many times now that they just they continue to believe that I think there’s just no doubt and and as we talked to Billy Andrews earlier a couple what about a month ago and she said there’s just no doubt that as long as there’s a pitch left we still feel like it and there were two outs and it was Bella bacon with a walk-off double in game one as it it was scoreless in the bottom of the eighth with two outs Bella bacon was the hero in that game and then in game two it was Ava bredwell in the bottom of the seventh two outs they were trailing by one she hits a two-run bomb so two huge wins for Nebraska softball so they got a big weekend coming up this is a quite quite the stretch here they were at Michigan then you had two at home versus Iowa and then they’ve got Northwestern who’s leading the Big 10 coming in this weekend so big time weekend coming up for Nebraska softball and uh there’s lots going on this weekend here in Lincoln in addition to the spring game and baseball and softball and one of the cool things that’s happening around Nebraska softball this weekend is Taylor Edwards one talking before the break big weekend coming up for Nebraska softball as they host Northwestern here this weekend for a three game series Northwestern on top of the Big 10 standing so big opportunity coming up this weekend for Husker softball and uh some special things going on surrounding the series one of those being that Taylor Edwards is going to be back this weekend they’re going to retire her number 12 jersey and you know just if you pull up the Oscar softball record books it’s incredible I mean she’s everywhere she’s in the single season the game record books the careers and of course her home run record just broken earlier this season by Billy Andrews but since I’ve been here I’ve been told time and time again just how how nice of a person she was in fact Maddie burkart when she was on the other night said she’s probably the nicest teammate that she’s ever played with and certainly in my communication with her and and setting up this interview she no doubt was was just very very kind but was incredible piece of the puzzle here uh in in the history of Nebraska softball so very deserving that she’s going to be honored this weekend I got a chance to chat with her about all of that and even her journey here to Lincoln well jersey retired number 12 going to be honored this weekend uh not a lot of people can say that they they have that experience what was that phone call like take us through the you know the whole finding out that this is going to be happening for you so we actually flew down to Lincoln uh for the reunion of our 2013 World Series team and so we flew in uh coach rille had asked us if oh Tatum and I if we wanted to throw out the first pitch um before one of the games and so during the first pitch um well after it they had like a little video presentation and so we were on the pit Mound watching it and then they that’s when they announced it and so of course they started crying started potum and it was just it was just such an awesome feeling and just like so unexpected so I’m really really excited and honored for it what’s it like for you now coming back to Lincoln like how excited do you get to come back and be able to get back around the facilities of programs all you know all the people that are here yeah um I’m really really excited I moved away from Nebraska I believe it was like 2 years now so I was pretty connected for a long time after I graduated but now go coming back and living in another state it’s just going to just feel fill my heart a lot more I feel like um and so I’m really excited to see the coaches again give them a big old squeeze hug them and just connect with them and see the team and see the girls well some people might be listening in might be very familiar with their story some people might not be so I take me back to the beginning the recruiting process with you and Tatum and coming from California how you landed on Nebraska how you felt like this would be a good spot for you so we knew at a very young age that we wanted to go to college together so that was our um set goal um and selfishly we knew that our parents had to pay for two kids so we were like if we can go somewhere full ride scholarship so we can just try to give back to our parents that’s what we were going to so from the very beginning coach rll had actually wrote us individually handwritten letters and at the time that was like never heard of um and so it was really really special that we got like a personalized letter from a power five like top coach and so that was how we got on board with Nebraska or even heard of them and so throughout the recruiting process T and I would do like a pros and cons post board list of the schools that were interested in us and that we were interested in as well um and it came down to Nebraska and Washington at the very end and I believe our connection with the coaching the whole coaching staff um is what led us to choose Nebraska so that’s awesome what was it like for you to grow up being pitcher catcher how did she end up the pitcher how did you end up the catcher um I believe it started with Tatum pitching and so when she went to uh her pitching lessons somebody needed to catch her so they were just like okay like we’re just going to throw you in there but then it kind of worked out because my dad used to catch um when he used to play and so it was just this whole cute little thing and then I fell in love with it and I’m still doing it that’s awesome so when you guys got here immediately made an impact um you know how do you reflect upon even just like being able to get here and settle in and be able to get right to being able to contribute to this program um it was definitely good having weekly conversations with the coaching staff we um Tatum would have them with Coach Sipple who is pitch and Coach um I would have them with Coach Miller and Coach Rell and Tatum would have them with Coach Rell as well but getting to know the coaching staff and just what their mindset was and what they were expecting of us um and I mean honestly we didn’t talk too much about onfield stuff it was more so when we connected with them you know how are you doing what are you doing in school what are your interests all of that but diving into okay what can you bring to the team what are we looking for um and how can we take care of you and help you because you guys are coming from California so you’re not going to have any family so being able to you know connect with us on a very personable level definitely helped us like hit the ground running and be you know less homesick um and just dive right into the team and put our you know put our working hats on and just go to work and help this program so it’s one thing to commit and feel like okay I might be making the right choice at what point did you think okay I made the right choice I’m so glad that I I chose Nebraska when did it sink in that this is where I was supposed to be yeah um I feel like throughout my college career there were just like little bits of situations or moments that happen and just feelings um but I don’t think it truly set in until I graduated and um I was uh I believe I was like a volunteer or just finishing my undergrad my fifth year and so there were just like moments I would just you know drive up to drive up to the clubhouse be walking up and I’m like man this place has just made me who I am and being able to just be 100% authentic myself from the first day I set foot as a freshman as like an 18 19yearold to now still being and giving back to the next you know generation of kids um I think that’s when it was like full circle like wow this was definitely the right decision for me um and I’m just so glad that I was able to find the place for me to become who I am if you pull up the Nebraska softball record books I mean your name is all over it I mean in so many statistics whether it be single games single season and the career record books one of those records just got overtaken the home run record by Billy Andrews um you know I know you’re so supportive of this program and Billy’s a local Nebraska kid and actually you know looked up to you and and was really honored that she could surpass you but what was it like for you to see her kind of work through that and and end up taking over your record uh it was it’s been such like an honor to see it just get passed down because I I knew Ali Viola when I was in college we had a great connection we would have like dinners which she would come and watch the games and then now I actually work with her in Ohio so having us be close and then still being able to connect with Billy and watch her and um I was there when she was playing and so it’s like just a cool little connection like passing down uh generations and through humans and so I’m just so proud of her and I hope she continues to just you know surpass that as much as she can to set it for the next generation or the next kid that’s going to pass it you still have your name at the top of couple of different records but uh one of those the consecutive games of the Home Run and then the the grand slams in a game that was an NCA record as well but you hit two in a game in 2013 take me to that game and what it was like to hit two grand slams in a game um I think if my memory is correct we were playing at New Mexico state and I just remember it was just like an unreal day of just seeing the ball and just like swinging trusting you know what I saw with my eyes and then letting my back connect with it um I don’t remember it being hard and I hate to say that and because those moments they don’t come very often so enjoying that moment when it came um I just felt like on Cloud9 it was just so so fun for you know for an elite hitter like that a lot of times you want to just swing for the fences every time but you also are among the record holders for career walks also hit by pitches so take me through that Evolution too of how you um you know worked at the plate to be able to realize okay however I can contribute I don’t always have to hit uh bomb every time I’m up at the plate yeah and um I pride myself from my dad always teaching us the mental game of just always being a hard out having a productive out and just passing your bat from the teammate before you and teammate after you how can you you know make the name on your chest and the jersey that you’re wearing how can you make them proud and push the W on the score card for the team on your chest so anything that I can do even if that’s you know going 0 and two on the first two pitches and watching them go right down the middle to then fouling off three to five pitches and putting more taxing pressure on that pitcher to then maybe I strike out that’s okay but I’m putting at least pressure on her and taxing her for the next person behind me to hopefully continue to tax her and just thinking of it as you know those little things to make the team succeed and get a walk or get a hit by pitch and just being a threat and always you know putting pressure on the opposing team to help uh help our team you know move forward and hopefully win I love that good perspective for young hitters as well so 2013 you guys go on a magical run to the Women’s College World Series and you know be gotten to know Maddie Valor Burkhart really well and she is joking how you know no one expected you guys to be there you’re you’re no there was no Nebraska signage or anything up when you guys got to Oklahoma City but take me back through that run in the postseason and punching the ticket back to the Women’s College World Series how special was that for you to get to be a part of that oh it was it was beautiful it was just so gritty everybody you know put their heads down and just worked together um I remember that year Tatum was still battling Through The Yips and so it was like a team cohesive you know mindset of like okay every inning if Tatum is starting and she’s pitching we’re probably going to have a runner at first base or first and second like we don’t know but we’re always just going to be like you know what it’s okay this is the situation how can we make it better how can we put ourselves in a good situation to be able to succeed and just roll a double play or get the lead out and so having the simple mindset of whatever the situation is we can always find a positive and move forward and get better um or be a threat in the Box even if we’re down by six runs in you know the bottom of the seventh or we’re in a mercy situation we need one run so it’s just how can we Chip Away um I feel like our team that year we had a great mentality of that and just being just little gnats and clawing and doing anything until the very last out from the very beginning to the very last out but yes I I will say the NC NCAA didn’t have any Nebraska gear it’s kind of Full Circle because my partner now she played at Nebraska or sorry at Oregon and so we actually went back to Oregon this past fall and that was the first time i’ been back so it and they have their new Jane Sanders Stadium but I was like I remember when this was the older stadium and we came in here and nobody thought we could do it and we beat them in ters is going to the World Series I was like that was kind of a little pride moment I was like I got to geek out over um you are the first you were the first All-American catcher for Nebraska All-American I mean just again the accolades are are long and lengthy but how did you develop into being that Elite catcher what what went into that what was that process like for you to be able to to do all the things that you did while you were here in the Nebraska uniform um honestly I always tell Tatum that it was kind of her and how she started with The Yips in high school um I feel like she definitely developed and uh made my blocking skills a priority and communication skills um it helped me you know get out of my own head and see Catching in a different perspective and how I could kind of just have raw authentic communication with a pitcher and keeping information information and not getting emotional about it or taking my bats and taking them personal if I didn’t succeed and taking that onto the field and then getting snippy or frustrated with a pitcher because they weren’t throwing strikes or they weren’t having you know competitive pitches so I feel like that definitely helped me in high school and then going into college um just I know coach Miller helped me a lot with just having the ability to know my body as it continues to grow and fluctuate and being proud of that and how can I make movements um efficient for me and just always always communicating and being loud because I’m very softspoken I’m very nice I think so on the field I had to really tap into you know a little bit more aggressive or a Little Bit Stronger mentality to be louder on the field be communicative and um just lead behind the plate oh such a fun conversation really enjoyed chatting with Taylor Edwards you can listen to that full conversation live in the studio with by uh with President Chris kabor here thanks for stopping by thanks Jessica always great to be with you it’s an exciting week it’s finally spring game week and um you know lots lots of hype I think over 54,000 tickets have been sold so it should be a rock in stadium but what are you most excited to see from this football team and and Coach R and his staff coming up on Saturday well first of all I mean spring so you know like we’re we’re finally kind of set for really good weather going forward here but uh I first should thank Husker Nation for you know I was talking to Troy Danny the other day about you know spring games at other places he’ been to Washington to Lane and he’s like he’s never heard of 50,000 people showing up for for a spring game so you know thank you to Husker Nation incredible fans um uh you know we talked a lot I I’m I’m a native Nebraska Husker bleed Husker red and I’m just like everybody else I’m just excited to see the progress of the team I mean I was thinking about this you know always kind of expect a little bit of a jump from year one to year two I mean most of our coaches probably didn’t even know where the where the bathrooms were when they were here last year they only been here for few months so um you know just you know I had the opportunity to see watch a few practices I’ve been really pleased with what I saw and I’m just like everybody else I want I want to see what the defense looks like coming back and and obviously everybody wants to see what those young quarterbacks uh can sling the ball around so I’m just really excited to go see what what they do on Saturday well a couple of our analysts well all of them that we have here if you ask them like for Jeremiah s their eyes go to the offensive line Damon Benning it’s the running back so what what position group do you when you go out to practice or when you’re watching games what do you hone in on I I’ve always been kind of a defense guy so I like watching the defense and I’m a trench guy I like to watch the defensive line and the offensive line to see what we do there but um but I I’m not naive I know there’s going to be a lot of eyes on the quarterbacks and so obviously been paying a little bit of attention to what they’ve been doing and um but I’m really excited about you know from what I’ve seen so far this spring it coach Rule and his staff are are doing an amazing job and I’m really excited about the progress that they’re making from what I understand you are going to have some special guests with you here on Saturday tell us about that yeah so I think we’ve talked several times about you know our our desire to be more competitive in terms of our scholarships and recruiting five-star academic kids just like we recruit five star athlet so just like I know our coaching particularly coach rule but other coaches use the spring game or football games as a platform to bring in recruits uh we’re we’re going to be hosting a whole set of uh what I call our five-star academic students uh to be on campus joining us for spring game get a little flavor what being a UNL student Husker might feel like so um we will have on hand a number of our presidential scholarships so these are the kids with perfect 36 acts but also some additional kids that that are just really high high level talent in Nebraska including you know a young woman I met who who switched her commitment from tane to UNL she wants to be a Navy Roc student and a young woman who was planning to go to Florida right here from Lincoln who’s now going to be UNL and wants to do um you know someday be a medical doctor so just really really excited to be with those young people they’re really really smart um someday we’re all going to be working for them so um can’t wait to host that on Saturday as well that’s I think it’s been that has been cool since you’ve been coming in and talking about some of that is they’re not just great students some of the backstories from from some of these really outstanding Nebraska kids was this what you envisioned when you first had the idea of this this program I mean I think a little bit I mean I think our intentional our goal you know if we could just get one kid to kind of and it doesn’t have to be a perfect 36 any kid I I I’ve kind of told my story you know growing up in David City being a first generation kid and now being having the opportunity to be the President of University if if if I can do it anybody can do it and if we could just Inspire one one listener out there to to pursue their dreams and so um but definitely we wanted to use this as a platform not only to go compete for for the best and the brightest in terms of our scholarship but send a message to all young people out there particularly Nebraska kids that hey we want you here we think we have a tremendous University that will allow you to pursue your dreams and uh so far the response has been really really positive oh very cool well the Board of Regents met a few days ago and there were some big Husker related items that were on the agenda let’s start with the naming of the go big project right out here to our left it’s going to be named after the legendary Tom Osborne take us through that decision process probably a no-brainer right well I mean uh selfishly you know as a as a Nebraska kid growing up in the ‘ 80s and 90s um you know Tom oddborne was was more than legendary in my my mind and so um uh so being able to uh I’ve had the opportunity to meet coach odor a few times here during the presidency and and what an amazing man and and what better way to to name this incredible facility I mean coach Osborne was always about you know doing things the right way winning and and being the best in the country um in everything we do and I hopefully Husker fans will get a chance to come see the facility um you know won’t be quite done for Saturday but sometime then and when they see it they’re going to see um this facility I I’ve talked to a lot of people and so far nobody’s told me that they’ve seen a facility quite like this across the country so you know what better what better person to name it after than than coach osbor a lot of the NFL guys are coming back saying it’s better than most of the facilities in the NFL as well so it’s uh it’s it’s outstanding yeah I talked to Coach Ru a little bit I think he got some feedback from NFL like if if if you’re a if you’re a football player and and you’re and you want to develop and once we get them here like there should be there should be a no-brainer there should be no other place in the country that they want to come and not only for the academic but to develop their themselves um as a person and get prepared for the NFL career so uh we’re really really excited about the about the facility Well the Regents also approved alcohol sales at hosker baseball and softball games and it was made a lot of headlines and and certainly was all over my social media over the weekend but can take us through that process and and how you and Troy were able to come up with a solution and a plan that really seems like it’s a win-win for everybody and you know it was a question that we got a lot before it was all came to fruition from from fans it seems like people were really excited that it it came to fruition last weekend yeah I mean so obviously we we never bring forward a an alcohol item to the Border region without a lot of thought and and um discussions that go behind that but I I first want to thank all of our h fans for giving that input in supporting softball and baseball again just like football and volleyball and men and women basketball we just have tremendous support there and and it’s been a it’s been an amenity that a lot of fans have asked for um um and second I just really want to thank uh the nepco team particularly Jim and Jack Abel uh for their partnership on this and um you know it really came together it just we just sat down and we talked about you know um you know what are what the end goal here the end goal is to to help the softball team win the baseball team win and the Salt Dogs win and we can do that by enhancing our facilities now I love Hay Market Park I was still here I remember when it was first built um but I’m feeling a little old that was almost 20 that was over 20 years ago and um so there are definitely a list of improvements or enhancements we need to make that facility facility and um you know what better way you know if we have a kind of a new Revenue stream here in terms of potential alcohol sales why not just put that all back into the stadium um it enhances hopefully The Fan Experience um it helps the softball team it helps the baseball team and it helps the salt dog so once we kind of got that on the table um it was a pretty easy decision and um really appreciate the Board of Regents um for their thoughtfulness and support and and last thing I just want I really want to thank um you know our events management staff and our teams I think we’ve proven over and over again that we can do this responsibly um started with big 10 wrestling men’s and women’s basketball volleyball day in Nebraska you know we served alcohol all those events with very very minimal problem and that that’s a you know gratitude to our team for for being real really thoughtful on how we do this and responsible so um like you said I think it’s a win-win for all well we are hitting the home stretch of the spring semester what what’s on your plate over the next couple weeks well you know we’re coming down the end of semester so only only a few weeks left um which is exciting but also I know our students our faculty are are getting a little tired and they get ready for final weeks and final projects all that so but you know uh anybody in the University whether you’re a staff member or faculty member one of the really highlights for us is graduation day so we are really looking forward to um seeing our our graduates uh walk off with their with their diplomas and what’s really special here about um at Lincoln University Braska Lincoln is we get to do that in the stadium so really looking forward to seeing um you know those students and their famili celebrate that great achievement in the stadium here in a few weeks cross our fingers hopefully the been out to several practices how has it seemed different has it seemed different to you this spring compared to last spring well it’s a lot it’s a lot quicker right I think guys know kind of where they’re going I did like a tenative headcount the other day and I think what 35 40% of those guys this is only their second spring practice with Coach Rule and that’s just not very long but it’s a lot better than it was a year ago where they were still learning like procedure and protocol so it moves at a it moves at a very quick like Tempo and I think they know a lot of what they’re doing like that’s that’s the thing that I think the most is a a lot better pace and Tempo so the practices that you’ve been give me an offensive player and a defensive player who’s really popped to you so offensively um for sure n um I think that that’s kind of kind of an easy one I I think I liked him the very first practice uh down there but I’ll give you one that’s intriguing um because I’ll be curious to see how it it it manifests itself in you know with 62,000 and and a scrimmage I I like IES quite a bit at at running back shows good bursts got a little wiggle not sure on his real size size but he’s a guy that has flashed and kind of popped with some runs defensively uh you know I kind of like to go off the beaten path just to give some insight I I I think we may be pleasantly surprised with a guy like ramire Stewart right with with DJ with deshun Singleton and and Buford kind of in and out and and Singleton obviously not going through any practices at all and you know gford kind of the old man of the bunch not getting a ton of reps uh all the time I ramire Stewart is a guy that’s kind of come from off the radar a little bit for me in the secondary I think he gets downhill he tackles really well he seems a lot more fit like he’s he’s lost some he’s lost some pounds a little bit he’s moving around well rire Stewart is has has been a pleasant surprise for me this my my question for you DB is my wife and I are Foodies and we have our favorite restaurants when we come to Omaha like B Merz hersant and maybe I’m just late to the game but DV are you a foodie because I’m watching The Food Network and a random Diner drive in and D on and it’s it’s season 45 episode 51 if anyone cares and there’s Damon and Michael seir eating it BL box 16 in the Old Market but neither one of you guys gets an intro on the show you guys were kind of like random people I guess I want to know how’d that happen what were you eating what was uh gu sieri like and did you get a ride in his car yeah so that was it was interesting you know I I’ve supported block 16 for a long time it’s one of the better restaurants in the state and certainly the city and you know they kind of kept us going during covid because we are Foodies as a family and they did a really good job with their to go and Paul and Jessica the owners just became you know they just really took good care of us they would let us know when they had like family meal plans and take and bakes and you know because we were I was I’m jonesing pretty bad you know and my wife’s got really good taste in food and so they took care of us quite a bit and we just got to this a business I support I always retweet their stuff on social media and and so uh they called and said hey you know kind of keep this under your vest a little bit but you know diner dve drive-ins and dives is coming we’d love to have you so you know I had to sign a non-disclosure and all that stuff and and we had uh we had the PFC chicken and I had the GOI Jang Burger uh that we tried but it was really regimented like they only let a few people in at a time it was was it it it’s a it’s not a they pull it off from a television standpoint and they make it look amazing inside real time you’re like nervous is all get out because you don’t want to be the guys to blow it but uh he kept the car covered it was in downtown so he put a cover over it because he doesn’t really like people messing with the car too much and he has handlers that like move and and and and take care of the vehicle but I I’m a total foodie I I we there aren’t very many places in Oma that we haven’t been I don’t spend my money a whole lot on clothes and cars but I but man will we go out to eat in a heartbeat I had no idea where he was gonna go with that call so um that is awesome diversify you know just try to just try to be versatile you should put that on your ex bio Damon that you’re on Diamond’s diners and drives what is it well how long does it take to pick a place to eat when we’re out of town like it’s it’s a big deal it can take me a while it’s kind of a process Shane thanks so much for calling thanks a lot guys oh that’s cool we did have a couple text messages for you um Mike wants to know what are your thoughts on Nebraska maybe trying to pick up Dylan Edwards do we have enough enough depth there at running back yeah so that’s going to be interesting I know there was a pre-existing relationship and I don’t have enough information to to make a a a good rumor I know that there has been mutual interest in the past you know I think Nebraska likes their running back room is Dylan Edwards the type of Runner that would change the Dynamics of of the of the situation currently like you want if you go get a running back in the portal you want him to be vastly different than some of the body types and styles that you have now and I’m not so sure they I I get it he’s he’s a lot more powerful than people give him credit for but he’s kind of a little scatback uh they have a couple of those guys on the roster you don’t typically turn down a a running back the caliber of Dylan Edwards but with Nebraska’s roster space I just don’t know if they make a move it just seems like K State was always the the other school that was kind of you know lurking in the shadows but you know if if Nebraska doesn’t like what what they see in the next couple of weeks and they can’t get guys healthy because that room has been pretty banged up you know they may make a move but I don’t think running back would be the first place that they would that they would utilize for the portal what would be the first place you know I could May BC um you you might get a veteran backup quarterback especially if harberg doesn’t win the job and you utilize him other places uh in that offense because you always want to have three capable quarterbacks uh Nebraska went through it last year they’re not the only school I could maybe this is gonna sound funny but I could maybe see another DB uh like an impact cor a corner with some size maybe you know they’ve got they’ve got a lot of guys back there to play the quarterback spot but maybe a bigger rangy guy that’s a little more ready to play but I’m not sure how much Nebraska will portal or not they’re going to have some numbers issues that they’ve got to take care of by the time fall Camp rolls around all right here’s another one for you um hey DB what’s this current skinny on the tight ends and the set of Fleet footed receivers coming into the show this coming Saturday thanks Roger hash gooig red always I really like I like the tight end room they’re kind of The Quiet workers and I get it fedon is a big personality and he’s pretty Brash but um I like the way that he works Luke Linder has come a long way uh really done a good job developing as an inline blocker and putting him on the Move uh you know I’m a huge borer fan and I think he’s going to be steady Eddie but the cool thing about the tight end rooms is with sat there Jessica and he’s their offensive guy he sees those guys every day so he can he can design draw a scheme with those guys uh in in the concept in the con the route concepts of that offense because he sees them every day and he’s he’s getting a different vantage point he’s going to trust those guys he’s bringing them along himself and I tell you there’s nothing like a young quarterback’s best friend is an intermediate passing game and some good quality tight ends so I like the depth in the tight end room even though it’s not flashy I do think it’s pretty steady and they’ve got a lot of quality players the other thing with the wide receivers is there’s several right I obviously like n quite a bit you know Banks gets a lot of the headlines Jaylen Lloyd has had a a sensational uh seconde spring spring season um I really like jakori Barney um and here’s I’ll give you a sneaky one you know because he’s played before but have you seen Bonner’s body type lately he’s backed down into that wide receiver looking body he he couldn’t maintain at 225 he’s probably backed down to around 210 he’s been very very consistent and they can use him a multitude of ways you can use him in the Run game you can motion him you can look like you’re an 11 personnel and in all the sudden he can play a little inline tight end and you can give a 12 Personnel look I like him quite a bit um yeah and I that’s what I’m fascinated by too because they loved him last year but just didn’t quite fit so to see but he has it seems like he’s been a guy that they’ve targeted quite a bit he’s had a he’s had a really productive spring he is he’s a legitimate tough guy uh he knows what he’s doing and I I think they like him quite a bit but if you’re looking for the young guys to maybe make a splash I would and I’m not counting second-year guys like Coleman who’s has been a little bit banged up with the shoulder and Lloyd I would go with jakori Barney who’s had a who’s had a fantastic a really good spring so far Demetrius Bell’s another name we’ve heard a lot too he is he’s really Fleet of foot he’s got great um in and out of his breaks and rout running he’s he’s kind of been babying a little bit of a hamst not baby like it’s his temperament but he’s had to nurse a little bit of a a little soft tissue stuff with his hamstring and so he’s been in a green jersey a little bit but you look at him in and out of breaks and kind of his running he’s a guy that you can get excited about all right Brett in Columbus are you expecting any Husker players to be drafted this weekend gosh I hope so you know I I was I’m still trying to wrap my mind around Quinton Nome not getting a combine invite um that was he’s a guy that I felt like is is is kind of a Sunday talent and a really good good potential but you know the draft is is fickle and it’s all about teams needs and you know the good thing now is is guys on the back end of the draft and the back half of the draft really stand a chance to make rosters now uh along with free agents because depth is at such a premium in the NFL so you know it’s probably not going to be a Thursday Friday but you know Saturday I’m I’m hoping to hear some Husker names called all right one final text to read for you what are your thoughts on the visitors coming in on Saturday a couple big names coming in this weekend tell you what it is um it’s pretty cool you know recruiting has come a long ways in terms of remember it used to be well not enough guys are coming in season we got to get them to the game day experience and now you got ovs in June you’ve got guys taking visits in in April um people are using the camp circuit as kind of a visit time in the spring early summer period this is a really really quality weekend for Nebraska remember they’re fresh off of just getting guys like Merritt uh and Lang on campus during the spring so when you’re getting guys of that caliber um you’re you’re you’re doing good work they’re going to get all the instate guys back I think that are committed in 2025 Christian Jones um a guy that’s near and dear to my heart will will be back in town got five stars visit it’s just it’s he you know coach Ru now just he he just leaves no stone unturn and that recruiting department um they they work their tails and and I think this is going to be a really good week and you’ll get 63,000 it’s going to be great weather and I and I think it’s going to look a lot like real football so I’m pretty excited about the visitor list all right we got much more coming up we’re going to talk a lot more in our pregame show starting at 9:00 A.M 9:00 a. in the studio Damon not the booth you’ll be in the studio football time I made that I made that mistake wasn’t that something and and that was like day one right and now that you know me know me it’s like yeah I could see him doing that now we have to make sure that we confirm that Damon knows where where he’s supposed to be uh over and over again but that was I just wanted to get your thoughts on this too because I I think you’ll have a good perspective on this so um the night at the lead is coming up this Sunday and I was on one of the Committees that talked about the athletes of the year The Freshman of the year and it was pretty interesting the conversation with the female athlete of the year and they posted the finalist Meritt B from volleyball Elanor Dale from soccer axelina Johansson and Rema otabor both from track and fi the national title winners who I mean who would you give your vote to so I I like Dale quite a bit yeah um she was a Phenom it’s it’s good to see coach Walker’s program uh flourishing with soccer I that would at first blush that would probably be my pick she’s she was Sensational amongst not only the conference best but in in the country as well but gosh it’s hard to overlook Bon and her impact especially uh just getting started on this level but I probably would go with Dale okay and then the other one I was going to ask you about the male freshman of the year your boy Jaylen Lloyd is one of those guys a two sport guy but uh garri Kalin and Dash shman from track and field but another guy you’re really high on an trell Taylor who would you give the nod to in that category you got two of your guys in that category so wow that you know what that that is brutal um because Taylor and Lloyd are obviously one in onea and it’s and I think it’s from how far they came versus the expectation level I think everybody knew anre was a super talent I don’t know if they thought he would get it this quick then he had the good run in the Big 10 and Nationals oh boy and jaylen’s like family um boy that’s tough I may have to go with Taylor by just a smidge but I I Wouldn’t Die on that Hill that that’s that’s highly highly competitive and then they haven’t announced the male athlete of the Year finalist yet but the female a freshman athlete of the Year Harper Murray Natalie Potts Bergen Riley and Berlin sh Schultz but so to me this one was the easiest one I thought I’ll I’ll get your take first I gotta go with Harper Murray I I and she was Sensational um huge huge first year um and volleyball was so dominant for so long you know for 95% of that year I I I’ll take I I’ll go team Harper on that one see I I go Bergen Riley because I heard so many times listening to to Lauren cook West and the things I’ve learned about volleyball is that Setter position is so important I get it and I think they had enough Talent Harper was absolutely a critical piece to it but I think they had enough Talent they probably could get there without Harper I’m not sure they’d do it without Bergen no you listen I that’s a that’s a legitimate point and that outside of needing another hitter that position was critical and it was a huge question mark going in I I wouldn’t I I wouldn’t be mad at you over that pick too and matter of fact if we talked about it another three minutes I’d probably agree with you uh that’s again the the nominees for those Awards coming up night at the lead coming up on Sunday Damon follows all the sports so I wanted to to pick his brain about that all right well get rested up get ready to go we got a a fun day ahead on Saturday you got any um nominees for who I need to make sure I I interview on the sideline on Saturday um there’s such such good for sure EMT like I’m a I’m a huge EJ fan I know too he he’s a he’s a super person um he’s had a very interesting spring coach rule has done a and that offensive staff have have have talked about him quite a bit I think buford’s a guy you’ve got to get huge personality um Tommy Hill for sure t t Hill had a pi Jessica T Hill had a pick the other day in practice and he had just broken up a play the previous play before he he picked it stepped out of bounds he rolled the ball on the ground back to the offense and tell him to knock off the funny stuff he didn’t quite say it that way but I couldn’t believe it I’m like wow you guys are just going to really let this guy set the tone like that but it it’s it’s pretty cool to see him come for Full Circle and and embrace the culture and become a leader you for sure got to get t- Hill you you got the high chues ready I do I do I I have a surprise I have a surprise flavor pack too I I had to keep Zoe out of the other bag and and played a lot of football here Alex bulock so I got a chance to chat with him how spring is going and overall how this wide receiver room is shaking out here with wide receiver Alex Bullock well uh another spring for you how’s this one going this time around um it’s going well uh you know having the experience of playing a lot last season has really been able to help me prepare um just what to get better on and focus on over the offseason so coming into Spring ball what I need to work on um specific things so uh the Spring’s going well yeah you know just having that familiarity with his coaching staff the offense uh how does that help an offense when in transition into this spring you’re number two with these guys yeah um being having a whole year with this coaching staff already it’s been a been able to have guys play different positions um like last year you know learning an offense it might be hard to stick players at different positions but now that we have a whole year under our belt we can put you know this person here this person there this person there and not only can we worry about like learning the offense we can uh worry about like why we’re doing this and uh what we’re going to do on this coverage that the defense gives us so those little things um going into year two we’ve been able to do that a lot more you’re one of the veterans now in this room and and you know I know guys brought in some older guys but to be here at Nebraska have been around and and have been gone through this how has that been for you kind of being being one of those guys that is the experience now in the room yeah um this is probably the you know first time where in college where I’ve actually you know been one of the older guys and been one of the leaders so just trying to get th those young guys um to you know meet the standard every day get better all that type of stuff um and it’s been fun learning how to be a leader you know leading is one of the hardest things to do in sports and in life in general and uh you know you only get better at it by experiencing it so it’s it’s been good uh having that experience great message uh it seems like the these all all the quarterbacks really like throwing the ball to or comfortable throwing the ball to you you’ve made a lot of plays this spring how important has that been for you you already have the relationship with Hinrich but for those other the two freshmen to be able to be a guy that they can rely on yeah um like college football’s hard so when you’re coming in as a freshman especially early and rolly you know they’re still still supposed to be in high school but uh by having receivers that are in spots where you know they’re going to be so that you know you can rely on them that they’re going to be there and I can throw it to them uh just being able to catch the ball make plays so they can trust you cuz if a quarterback can’t trust a receiver it’s hard to play um you know there’s not a lot of chemistry there so how do you feel like those freshmen have handled everything and handled the offense they’ve done great um they’ve taken leaps every single day um the way that they control the offense and the way they’ve learned the offense at such a high level uh it’s been very impressive um not a lot of freshman can do that you know come in right away and just pick up the Playbook like that and get used to the speed of college football and they’ve done such a great job at it you have a great relationship with Garrett Maguire how is that relationship now going into this season with him and and the conversations with him about the expectations for you and and how he wants you to continue to grow yeah um he’s really challenged me uh like I said becoming a leader now that I’m one of the older guys in the room uh you know he has confidence in me uh and wants me to take that next step and try to help this room go to the next you know the next level and one of the ways that he wants me to do that is by being a leader how excited are you about this group seems like there’s a a lot of guys that you guys can can rely on to throw the ball to yeah no this this group is uh let’s just say I have high high expectations for us this year um you know during practice you’re on one field one of the receivers makes a play you look over to the other field and you know another receiver is making a play so we try to challenge each other every day you know who can you know who can make the most plays and do all that so it’s fun hearing a lot of about your brother John and how he stepped into the the leadership role with with Nick and Luke G from your perspective how has he handled his stepping into that leadership room for the for the defense yeah um he’s done a great job you know now that he’s the the leader in that room um being an old guy you know I always give him a hard time being in his his sixth year but uh kind of like me this is the first time he’s really been in that leadership position uh and it’s cool to see um the steps he’s taken um on the leadership side as well how has it been going against this defense this time around around it seems like um I was talking with Ben Scott he said it was just so hard last year but you kind of know a little bit it’s still a challenge but how has it been facing him this time around yeah no you know coach white always has wrinkles that he throws in it’s always hard going against his defense but yeah we you know second time around this spring we know a little bit more what to expect so we’ve been competing every day and you know we give them their fair share and they give us their fair share so it’s been good just a few more opportunities now for this team to be on the field before close this chapter what what does this offense need to accomplish here in these next couple weeks um you know just execution some like little things that we can always pick up but you know the way the way we’re competing you know as long as we’re competing we can fix all the other things I think our effort and com um competitiveness every day has been great just little things that we can you know we can tweak here and there that’s we just got to fix those as always great stuff Alex appreciate your time thank you uh great stuff there from Alex bulock I actually am going to be sitting down with his posted and the nominees for the categories for female athlete of the Year female freshman of the year and male freshman of the year and Cole and Camden were back there hooting and hollering thinking they had some input on this so I wanted to get their thoughts and because they feel like they have something to add to this discussion so Camden you want to you want to go first let’s start with the female athlete of the Year female athlete of the year um I think I’d go with Eleanor Dale I think um she really helped carry that soccer team um into obviously the Elite 8 which no one really expected them to do and she said obviously the goal record and led the country in goals so I think I’d go with Dale Cole to make it different and I have a volleyball bias so and B was on that list correct yes mer will be my what Elanor Dale did was incredible but I got the volleyball bias so I’ll go with Merritt I mean and they’re up against two national champions that are going to be Olympians and axelina and Rema it’s a great conversation and and it it’s a tough category and that’s why I wanted to bring it up because it’s just it’s amazing when you put them all on you see them on that one graphic and you’re like wow look at what those ladies did this season so you really can’t go wrong with any of those winners okay so let’s move to male freshman of the Year Camden who did you go with um can you list those ones again do you have them pulled up um okay how about we go with female because I do know those off the top of my head female freshman of the year was Bergen Riley Harper Murray have Berlin shuts and um Nataly pots I mean that’s a loaded class there I mean all of them have done a lot I think I’d give Bergen the front runner but I’d go Berlin shuts as my runner up um as a Lincoln East Alum she’s from Lincoln East but um she has a School record already in the mile and has a bunch of other records already as well so I think she’s kind of an underdog in that category for sure but she’s done impressive things she’s going to keep adding to her resume here there’s no doubt about she could probably be in the conversation coming up in years to come Cole I got to go with Bergen her year and the overall female athlete of the year so the other one that’s that’s out is the male freshman athlete of the year and it’s Garett Kalin Jaylen Lloyd track and field and football Dash Surman track and field Garett kalin’s checkfield as well and then anell Taylor wrestling all one of the all-americans for hoscar wrestling so um who you got Camden I think I’d go Taylor from wrestling although Lloyd played two sports I think that’s impressive too but just the season that Taylor had to be an All-American I think is very impressive as his freshman too Cole I I’m gonna go with Jaylen because he did have a a great track and and also the fact that he had three touch Downs three touchdowns as a freshman you know to put yourself in that opportunity to to make those plays very impressive and all over 50 yards right right his a his average uh reception is 39 half yards as a freshman so yeah he was really big once there were the injuries to lot of those guys in that wide
