killed it car they were wful on the weekend weren’t they W wful on Thursday night behind the scenes their President Andrew Basset is leading the charge of the Victorian clubs against Northern acmy against father Sons wanting far less concessions given to those clubs and I think there’s a few people up north and in New South Wales A bit sick of Andrew Bassett and a bit disappointed given that they get these great um Academy picks once in you know once every few years and there’s disappoint there obviously s have really struggled with Father Sons most of their Champions have had daughters so that I just keep waiting Kane for when they’re going to bring in the big fish are they going to stay patient and rebuild through the draft I mean grah Allan’s been there as a consultant now for quite a few years he’s now there full-time they’ve brought in um Davenport who’s got a great great reputation I really want to see what they do at the end of this year the big fish don’t move anymore not many there’s not many big fish out there they’re all signed long term well some really sensible early draft picks that actually live up to their draft but are they were that you expect them I thought I was excited by the preseason I must be honest watching them train and Liam Henry and but it’s amazing once Henry falls out king falls out Mason wood gets injured you know Jimmy Webster gets suspended it just shows I don’t think their coach was all that excited fascinating Ross was almost uh Throwing Shade on their prospects pregame and then back to over it after the game we’ve had a lot of challenging um a challenging draw uh next week we’ll have it’ll be our third travel in four weeks with this will be our second 5-day break coming off a six- day break so um and we’re relatively young so yeah we’re we’re working to find find consistency and hopefully as the schedule settles we’ll just get into a Groove where we can train a bit more and work on our deficiency so I’m a little bit nervous about tonight to be fair I don’t want to use excuses but I certainly come here I was cautious and I flagged even a pregame interview that I it’s our second four-day prep is that what it is 3 and 11 Games 3 and 11 days so but it’s not an excuse you know I don’t know they might have had something similar some would love that Honesty preg game but if you if that attitude had been reflected upon the players during the week you would give them absolutely no chance and they weren’t playing a great side they were playing the Western Bulldogs who had been destroyed by in the previous week without yugu Haagen and liba so it’s been a lot of 5day break excuses from a lot of Clubs travel do you buy it no I don’t and I guess the starts of the game as well as I think lordo you pointed out was they’re really flat to start the game so that’s not really an excuse there’s no fatigue there’s no travel Factor 10 minutes in when Cody Whitman’s and Aaron Norton’s making you look foolish statement game from the dogs they can Reign their season from here and M Baines was interesting before the game he well he left to the defense of the coach and the critics of of which you are among them Kane personalization of some of it and the way it’s directed at the coach at times is over the top we feel that there’s not much you can do about it other than perform and dispel it through wins and losses and shift the focus elsewhere is there pressure on Luke beverage for his job uh no no as I’ve said a couple of times it’s round five he’s contracted till the end of next year personal nature have they reached out to you at all the dogs no no and I guess did you think that was in Parton you I don’t know I don’t they did to me they did to me and um it was pointed out to me that um he hasn’t been the only mouthpiece for the club that Luke beverage has been the only mouthpiece and in fact Kylie um I think Kylie Watson wheeler does a monthly spot on the ABC um Amit Baines has given more interviews than I’d been aware of so I take that criticism on board but I don’t take the criticism that we were personal to the coach that’s that’s the point that I want to pick up if if questioning their defensive action if questioning the amount of goals they concede consecutively if questioning bizarre selection decisions if if that’s personal like that that is not personal criticism that’s professional criticism and that criticism Stacks up it’s amazing what happens when you play your best players in the positions that they should be playing in and then you get the results and a fascinating concession from Brad Johnson who’s a very respected commentator and who works part-time at the Bulldogs about Luke beverage’s messaging whether the the outside gets into Bevo a little bit I think I think every now and then it does because of the way that he he talks within his press conferences and and the the way he answers and and talks in riddles at different stages so therefore for for someone like beo I think he’s okay at the moment but the W will certainly help help and and relieve a little bit of that pressure as well that’s extraordinary from Brad Johnson is that personal uh well he said he spoke pretty much said what you said last week when you were a part-time forward coach at endon would you have made a comment like that about the coach you prefer not to car and that that’s a difficult part that’s why I don’t think you get involved at clubs at all if you’re in the media it’s just too hard

  1. Gold Coast just got 4 first round draft picks out of their academy and will pick up another two this year. How is that remotely reasonable? They trade out all their picks for junk picks to accumulate points to pay for these players with a 20% discount. It is out of control. Why should the Swans still get huge benefit from having academy concessions after 42 years in existence as a Sydney AFL club? By contrast North can't match bids on Sanders in last year's draft when they desperately need talent.

  3. St Kilda’s problem is years of crap drafting. In 2013 they chose Billings with pick 3 over Bontempelli; the next year they took McCartin with pick 1 ahead of Petracca. Then they took Gresham a couple of years later, and in 2017 they had TWO top 10 picks and drafted Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield, when players like Naughton, Tim Kelly, Sam Taylor, Gryan Miers, Liam Ryan, Noah Balta and Bayley Fritsch were available. They had their chances, and they blew them again and again.

  4. Hmm issue with Kanes commentary on Beveridge is& Adam Simpson for that matter is that both have achieved more than Hinkley but yet over the past 2 yrs Kane has repeatedly defended him… while I agree with what Kane says it just comes across as personal ..

  5. What happened to the Saints is what you would call a scheduling loss. The media bashed Bevo and the dogs all week long about the list and the coaching methods, they were always going to come out and thrash the opposition, most sides do after the mid week media circus

  6. Swans generate the most money in the AFL hence the AFL protecting them. The corporate sponsors and partnerships they have is crazy. You’d be surprised who tips into that club.

  7. The afl shouldn't mess with father-son picks. Everyone loves them. They are a great part of our game. The fans love it. I think most people can accept that.

Academy's I don't hate. But need to be reviewed. Hawks as an example, had 4 consecutive bottom 4 finishes and only 1 pick in the top 5 in those years.

  8. Northern academies are a crock, it should be one in all in. Every club should have a recruiting zone for which they can nominate ONE kid who they choose who doesnt go into the draft and who signs direct for the club in whose zone he plays. By gifting the Swans concessions, you depress, dishearten followers of other clubs who sometimes just need a bit of hope.. a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Given there is going to be another compromised draft when Tasmania comes in, how can a club who is struggling now build a side around young talent, if the northern clubs have dibs on all the best new players???

  9. St Kilda are the most inept team in the history of the VFL/AFL over the long run. North are bad but they had 2 good decades. St Kilda has one extremely lucky flag in 150 years in existence. That is not down to just bad luck – look at their draft choices and coaching decisions. The Malcolm Blight hire was unforgiveable.

  10. Wait until Tassie comes in and look at the concessions the AFL give them to make them competitive. With the uneven draw the AFL would have to be the most unfair sporting code in the World and they do nothing to fix it

  11. Wow travelling for an eastern state team? Crazy imagine having to travel every second week also throw in tassy game in there… Melb teams need to grow up

  12. St Kilda has its many issues. Nevertheless, listening to what Cornes and Lloyd have to say on it is one thing from former players, but Hutchiii and Caro thinking their opinion matters to anyone other than themselves is hilarious.

  13. cmon korn, at least take ownership of your words.
you been kicking bevo for a good 18 months now, pumping up an ordinary list to top four stature so you can criticise the coaching.
your also peeved because weagles have won a couple of games,
simmo got to put his young squad thru a well needed preseason,
despite you wanting to see his head on a spike all last year.

    two words korn ken hinkley.

  14. One of the doggies board members told me that if Bevo had lost that game he would have been sacked but because they won so convincingly they couldn’t do it.

  15. OK we get it AFL, you want the QLD and NSW clubs to thrive but it's time to sop the draft concessions. One of the 4 first round academy draft picks the Suns got last season (which is actually staggering it was allowed) was born in Melbourne. I get the idea behind academy products but you can't allow clubs basically free access to a whole State's talent. Or least have a cap at one or two per draft, something common sense.

Then you have the ridiculous purely subjective priority picks, which are made up and handed out on a whim by the AFL that affect other struggling clubs. North don't need more first round draft picks, they need experienced mature players to improve their starting 22. What is the incentive for Hawthorn and the Eagles to improve at all and try and win games. Might as well tank and get handouts until ready to compete. The draft is in place because the worst team gets the best picks. It's already structured to equalize. North Melbourne didn't even finish bottom last season and received more handouts.

The real issue is the trade market. Free agents only want to go to competitive clubs so the AFL needs to work out a way to give struggling clubs priority access to free agents via trades, whether that be salary on top of the cap or another solution. Getting draft picks year after year won't help North when they are regularly losing players to trades like JHF and McKay and picking up hacks at the trade table that no other clubs want like Nyuon, Fisher, Stephens and Tucker. Look at how the Eagles quality experienced players coming back have improved them this season. The AFL needs to focus on the trade market to help struggling clubs and leave the draft order alone. The draft is just a quick fix to a structural list problem.

  16. North will get 2 picks before any other club again this year when Zurhar leaves – the system is broken everywhere.

  17. People In VIC don’t understand what the academies do for the game up North. These players like Jed Walter would be no where near as good as they are if it weren’t for the academies – probably not even playing. Reducing draft concessions for the academy players will just de-incentivise northern clubs to boost the growth of the game up north

  18. It’s a fair comment. We finished 18th last year and our 2nd pick got pushed back so far it’s ridiculous. Northern academies and Parasite tin rattlers like North are hurting the comp. Scrap the salary cap or at least the off field soft cap and let the weak fall
