guys let’s talk a little bit about the release because I often get a lot of questions about the release and it falls into the realm of of two things right sometimes people get too excessive with using the trail arm too much in a rolling closing fashion and the other one is that there’s not enough closure at all and people tend to just think oh I’ve just got to kind of keep the face really open and if I just turn that’ll give me really good results but all that ends up happening is you’re just going to end up just glancing across the ball next thing you know you’re going to end up coming down really steep to sort of try and compensate for it and then you’ve got like a really weak sort of cut or a low cut so what needs to happen is there needs to be an element of opening and closing right so if I just hold the club left hand you can see the way my left hand is going from a sort of pronation so clockwise motion to obviously anticlockwise motion supernat and fashion right so there has to be an element of opening and closing but what we’ve got to be careful is that we don’t allow the right hand to roll too much this way as well and that’s why the feeling of that sort of sensation of of slapping or throwing the club down is such a good one right now again if you to use like a bit of a rope trainer for this as an example you’ll notice the way that I can generate a lot of speed by just straightening my right hand and it’s a sensation that I’m throwing the end of the Rope to the ball it’s like a slapping sensation slapping right not like an excessive driving not an excessive rolling it’s like a slap so by the time my club head meets the ball my face back of my right hand is facing in that direction not too much closing not too much Drive holding and what I’m saying is by allowing that right arm to straighten you can actually hear how much speed is created by doing just a short action and that’s the benefit of a rope trainer so what you could do is do a bit with a rope trainer then do some short swings take it back so the way I can get some good Distance by simply just allowing that sensation of slap it see where I finish arms Nic and extended in that through swing position make a massive difference I’ll see you guys again really soon

  1. Thx for explaining this release feeling in more detail Russ. I now know i'm trying to hold the clubface too square after impact w excessive shaft lean and upper body too spin'y and upright causing low trajectory or cut shots. I will try this feeling of throwing the clubhead at the ball w/ a bit less grip pressure, and see if I can get that higher loft or nice ark back into my ball flight.

  2. Excellent use of the rope drill and acceleration ‘slap’ action of the right hand on the ball at impact giving square to target line control

  3. I don't think you can teach a release. Keep your grip light, get you body in the right positions during the downswing and the release will happen automatically. Like Hogan said, your hands do nothing. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of instructors on the web. They all say different things.
