buzzies yeah bunnies and Roses bunnies and roses sure guys the Cardinals did lose the second game of the double header but in that second game of the double header did they provide St Louis 60 Cent drinks at Mobile on the run you bet they did you’ve been asking for this Randy and you are also bringing awareness to this cause which is very important now have the Cardinals given you many reason to be able to speak on this and bring awareness to it I believe this might have been game number six where they provided 60 Cent drinks for the masses so you saw offense is what you tell yeah yeah that nice to see kind of happy about it kind of happy about it all right game one uh big game Gibby Jim who will join us later on the show he was awesome he was fantastic he’ll be with us at 8:15 Kyle Gibson AKA Gibby uh seven Innings four hits one run he struck out nine and outd Jack ferty to get the Cardinals a 2-1 game one win Cardinal scoring a couple of runs in the ninth against another former Cardinal Shelby Miller to get the W uh yeah KY Gibson we saw that swing a Miss element to the game that we really haven’t seen much this season nine strikeouts for him the guy on the other side who’s very familiar the old Irish over there Jack flare he taught us the art of pitching yesterday guys he was throwing so hard he was 96 to 98 and to say that he wasn’t amped up for that start you wouldn’t uh know baseball because he was ready to go with 14 strikeouts and he was uh he was amped up just a little bit if you look at his metrics going into uh yesterday’s start he’s actually been way better than the record would indicate and the ER would indicate so saber metrically or Advanced metrics he’s been much better than what people had thought so he was awesome yesterday six and 2/3 of shutout ball he allows just two hits walks one and Strikes Out 14 including the first seven red birds I didn’t think they were going to get a hit he was going all Cory clubber on us for the first couple Innings there he looked like Cory cloer he did didn’t he yeah I mean he uh almost for fans that don’t know he almost threw a no hitter against the Cardinals when he was with Cleveland he was awesome Cory clber and clber and I just thought that flarey was just uh tremendous yesterday he was Untouchable it looked like very much 2019 Jack fles of what you saw during the second half of the Season there but on the other side can we talk about Kyle Gibson what he’s able to do not only is he providing you Innings he’s recorded at least six innings in all six of his starts but also his erra is now down now I know he had that big blow up against the Marlins but the adjustments that he’s made since then you’re seeing it in action right now I thought the key in the game was seventh inning bases loaded and I I know Randy you’re big on this Ali stuck with him Ali said hey this is your game to win or lose and he got out of that situation Bullpen made it stick Ryan Hesley has been fantastic he’s the first in 10 saves this year in Major League Baseball and that’s the kind of game Sunday that you don’t win yesterday you do win and if you love baseball they’re fun games to watch baseball in front offices and the people in the front offices that never played the game Who r on vo and spin rate and all that stuff they’ve completely lost appreciation for the pitch maker I I just think you you let him go I I thought that was the right move because it’s his game to win or lose he he’s gone toe-to-toe with Jack flarity and if he would have taken him out I would have been disappointed really disappointed so if he gave up a base hit I would have been okay with it if you go back though in time and you look at pictures like Tom Siver or if you look at Adam way wght or Chris Carpenter with the Cardinals if you look at a Jack Morris there were guys at the most important point of a game who would make the pitch to get out of a situation Fernando Valenzuela when he was at the top of his game didn’t have awesome stuff but made the pitch when it counted and that’s why we liked going to a game where we got to see Tom Siver pitch against Bob Gibson’s a bad bad example because he had great stuff but Carlton the Carlton Siver you know Carlton would throw that slider on your back foot uh on uh a two two count and he he’d kill you John Smoltz was a great pitch maker John Smoltz would hold pitches back for the first couple of innings so that he could show you something you hadn’t seen in the fifth or sixth there is an art to pitching and I don’t think the art really exists much anymore you just don’t see it and you know typically in that situation I think most managers not all go to their Bullpen it’s just a different game I mean it’s just a different way to look at the game I I’m not saying it’s right or wrong but by going with his gut and I think he would say even with a double header and even with a full game to cover coming up which would lend itself to saying keep the starter in longer at that point he had gone deep enough so it was up to Oly whether or not to keep him in and I I thought it was the right move totally the right move as the Cardinals win that one 2 to one then in the night cap the Cardinals lose 11 to6 Steven mats with a rough outing three and a third he allows four runs on seven hits strikes out only one and walks to his manager aliar didn’t have enough to finish guys he’s been um working through low back all week and you can just tell physically that he couldn’t like finish and then after the game Matts spoke to the media oh excuse me gentlemen I got to take care of a week back pardon me how long have you had a week back oh about a week back you see that he’s not one of the three stoes Randy come on don’t do that to Matt don’t do that but it is concerning when you do have those funny Dan is not really Dan is ignoring that but moving on from that the lower back issues that is a big concern do you think that that’s a big part of why we have seen the drop in his V obviously the command wasn’t there for him last night how concerned are you guys about Steven mats moving forward he’s been terrible three of the four starts he didn’t complete the fifth whether that was a back issue prior to yesterday he’s allowed 16 runs that’s not sustainable I bet he stays in the rotation for a while though because the answer would be who’s next one of the two guys that you sent down to stretch out right maybe so but are you going to get anything better out of them you’d hope so I mean could it be much worse no and so that’s why I keep stepen mats to justify the contract I give him to May if end of May in early June if if he continues to go this way it’s not sustainable and then at that point you got to make a decision on whether to put him in the bullpen or keep him in the rotation and we talked about this yesterday I prefer him to be a part of the bullpen I understand that the contract plays but at this point I was thinking about that last night who else can you call up is it too soon for Sim robertsa probably you also don’t want to rush him and his development but also with libert not excuse me not Liberator but with Zach Thompson you have to wonder too if he’s ready to come up yet because we know that they believe that he lost too much weight and that affected his vlo so how long is that going to take till they believe that he’s ready to come back to the majors well until he throws harder I would say he’s got to throw harder he’s got to fix his mechanics and and if he’s the same guy going down to the minor leagues and I talked about it yesterday the gap between triaa and the major leagues is probably as big as it’s been ever you don’t want to have it as fool’s gold you just got to make sure that he’s right and I I think ry’s right I mean it who’s better I mean at this point what are you going to do and you got to find somebody though if this continues because you can’t live with Matt’s pitching the way that he has in three of the last four and we’ve talked about the Cardinal development right the cardinal said at the beginning of last year that they expected grao and mcgrey to be here this year and they aren’t now whether it’s them or whether it’s development we don’t know but the the people that they expected to be here aren’t then the other part of this is I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a team with more back issues than than this team has whether it’s the pitchers or the hitters last year Gorman dealt with his problems arnado dealt with his problems time and again we see Cardinal players with back problems and I I wonder if there’s something inherent in the way that they prepare that causes them to have these back issues as a team especially when you look at some of the younger players too I understand that there’s a lot of things that can happen but when you have the same thing happening over and over again with multiple different players you have to look at something that might be going on now you’re asking about Michael McGreevy down to the Myers currently he has a 4.94 erra three losses and just one win I think though at some point you take a shot with someone I don’t know who that would be whether it’s a stretched out Palante or matz finds it I don’t know if it’s the Lefty Zack Thompson but I I do know that you can’t live with what he’s producing here recently because if you do you’re giving up six runs a game it’s the fourth inning and you got to come back now I give their offense in you know a lot of credit in game two that was the offense that they’re expecting Goldie had a big day orinado obviously Alec burlson with the Home Run don’t forget the Cardinals offense hit 188 in the three game against the Mets over the weekend didn’t generate a ton of offense clearly in game one yesterday against Jack flare and the recipe for winning and they didn’t get the pitching it’s funny when they get the pitching they don’t get the hitting when they get the hitting they don’t get the pitching and that was the case in game two last night and at least Matt’s protected Gio gagos because we aren’t talking about him this morning after he goes two-thirds of an inning and allows four runs uh he was not great either four runs and just a couple of hits walked a couple and gyos is having a rough off season and he’s another guy that when when uh Riley O’Brien and keina Middleton are back you’re going to send out John King and you’re going to send out Nick Robertson although he looked okay but gagos is still going to be here as your eighth reliever you would think so speaking of relieving I thought Matthew Liberator that was the best we’ve seen him all year he was awesome in game one and so some fans might say why not move Liberto stretch him out to the rotation I think he can be a weapon in in the bullpen and that’s where I’m going to keep him if it gets to a point of desperation though with Stephen mass in the back issues I mean you he barely made it through three Innings how many pitches was it 75 pitches for him to get through three Innings he looked rough out there you might have to force the hand in this in this situation if this back issue is that big of a deal no doubt no doubt can we give by the way Mo some credit here he takes a lot of heat Gibson after yesterday Lynn and gray eight quality starts with an RA combined of 2.74 yeah he he said Innings they’re getting Innings and actually they’re I think they’re surpassing what you thought I I I agree 100% I was going to say to me they’re giving you more quality than I thought I I thought they give you quantity but I’m getting a lot more quality than I anticipated so you’re looking at the rotation where you got three that you like Sunny gray Gibson Lynn and uh you’re hoping that you get something better out of Michaelis today and obviously yesterday mattch just didn’t have it yep uh meanwhile down in Memphis last night Victor Scott goes one for five he’s inting 17 79 and Jordan Walker for5 against Charlotte and Adam we talk about starting pitchers Adam coffen Stein who they got last year he was in the he was in the Toronto deal right the Hicks well there were so many of them I think he was in Toronto system uh he goes five innings in his earned run average is now 5.93 after he allowed four runs did Dylan Carlson play yesterday I believe he did let check the uh DC3 he sure did 0 for one with a couple of walks okay he’s got to be coming I would think pretty pretty soon you would think so did you guys see Tink hence last night the way like I did dear Uncle Randy I broke off an engagement after two years as she appeared to only be after me for money she’s wanting to get back together and is willing to sign a prup and continue employment should we tithe the knot should I reconsider being with her or move on on I would say that you have probably lost trust in her if she was only into it for the money so I would suggest that you move on and find somebody that you really love wow that was a lot to unpack there I’m just trying to figure out what all is going on okay so I would be curious to know and this person can text back in how you knew that she was in it for money what was she saying was she saying I need all these different Financial things because then if she’s coming back into it even with the prenup I would be worried about what exactly that’s going to mean moving forward if there was a point at which the relationship wasn’t about true love then then that’s the issue exactly it has to be more than that I understand that Financial stress can cause a lot of issues in relationships and especially marriages but you have to be with someone who will stick with you through that despite any of the financial aspects right I just if you sign the prup I’m back in you’re fully back in Dan yeah you know what then she’s not in it for the money and you give the prenup and all of a sudden what Matthew are we sure you sign a prenup you’re not going to get the money yeah but that doesn’t mean you’re not in it for the money you just be willing to just suck up having a bad life as long as you’re taken care of absolutely but do you want to be with that person absolutely okay I’m getting taken care of I mean but if do you want to be with somebody who’s only with you because you’re taking care of them uh sure that’s my point yeah why not that’s fair hey then yeah that’s go for it dive back in buddy yeah I’m I’m diving I’m full in I sign they’re going to sign the prenup if I’m in I I understand where you’re going never get back together what 10 when you break up with somebody never get back together never ever s times sever ties completely you’ve never gotten back together sever ties completely good wa you’re emotional about this seti completely oh you want me to be in your life I will never be in your life bam easy my dog is obnoxious and poorly behaved with other dogs and other people but I love her what should I do Uncle Randy uh you know there are dog behaviorists I would suggest getting in touch with a dog behaviorist that uh they actually teach your dog how to behave differently it it’s a dog it’s kind of like uh do they have to be a puppy to do this no uhuh you can teach an old dog new tricks that would be my suggestion and whether it’s with other dogs or people or aggressiveness uh number one if the dog if you don’t desire having the dog around other dogs or people then just and if you love it and it loves you if then by all means just keep things the way they are but if you want to be able to put the dogs dog into social settings uh just get in touch with one of the great trainers in the in the metro area if you get in touch with our friends at Duo dogs for example just call and say hey uh can you connect me with a a dog behaviorist they’ll be able to to help you out I like that I like that they also love their dog yeah me too and the other thing is you have to commit to it you you can’t expect somebody else to train your dog and I know a lot of people send their dogs out to have them trained but if if especially in a situation like that you want your dog to be more social you have to be part of the process to get it to be more social we sent Stevie to training for a few weeks and then we continued the training at home and it worked out well she’s a very well behaved good girl yeah and see but that was just tra to regular training right it wasn’t because behavioral yeah oh yeah she wasn’t doing anything prior but the trainer works with all types of dogs older younger anything like that yeah it’s basically what trainers need to do is train people have TR the truth Uncle Randy my sister-in-law is getting married this weekend my wife is in the wedding can I use our one-year-old daughter has an excuse to leave early yes you can uh I don’t think it’s going to be an excuse is it well it’s probably be a pretty leg of an excuse right reason yeah uh if you show up here’s the thing okay let’s let’s be real here Brooke if I don’t show up at you’re going to have how many people at your wedding about roughly couple 130 130 wow okay is that big I think so I don’t I don’t know for sure though tell me it’s small okay probably small then my my question is this if I’m sitting off to the side on the on the on the bride’s side if I’m sitting off to the The Far Side of the Bride side do you think you’ll even notice if I’m there I going to make sure that I lock all the doors so then you’re forced to say goodbye to me see everybody at the reception you’re right the wedding itself though I don’t think anybody notices here you play it smart you you use the kid to get out of the wedding exactly that’s what I’m saying and then to get out of the reception at at a reasonable time you maybe you burn only three hours of your total day there instead of like eight and you only have so many years to to play that card with the kids so take advantage of it now Randy you sounds like something you sound like a veteran of this move to me it’s easy you just show up then you go to the wedding party and just say oh my God this went in it is a hole in one now I’ll reiterate in terms of the car even though it’s your first hole par three if the first ball is lost or in the water no you don’t get the the the thing but I I always give you a breakfast ball if we’re playing and your first shot is terrible on a part of three your second shot goes in I’m giving you the ace I uh I don’t think I would do the ace even though I do a breakfast ball I’m kind of torn on this see because the breakfast ball is to me it’s it’s a mulligan it’s a giveaway so I was playing this past summer it was a par 4 with a group of guys that I play with all the time and I said well I’m going to take my breakfast ball and I wind up getting a birdie and he says to me well you got a five I said now wait a minute I got my breakfast ball yeah so you know that that should count should I he said no par what no I got a par and he said no no no that’s a bogey and I said no it’s not and he changed the rules as we went we had Team game going we had some money going I was like no you can’t do that here’s the thing if you have the breakfast ball rule in play for everybody it’s a mulligan every like if it’s on the front nine right you get a mulligan on the front nine you had a par I agree that was on a par 4 I’m torn though on a par three I don’t know why I just am I’m contradicting myself I understand that here’s the thing if I who’s never had a hole in one if I put my first shot of the day in the water on a par three and my second shot of the day is a mulligan on said Par 3 and we’ve all agreed I probably had the other three people say hey take a take a breakfast ball to me that’s a mulligan and I’m writing down a one I I would write down a one for me now if I had a lot of money on this I’d say no no no you know to breakfast we can’t change rules though just because there’s money involved we can’t be changing the rules I told you I’m contradicting myself D away the context did I go did did the ball go from uh T more frustrated with the sport in my entire life it’s hard it’s really hard but I’m going to get back into it after the wedding wonder why is what makes golf hard it’s the ball doesn’t move it’s frustrating it’s so hard it is I feel like you’re right the ball doesn’t move yeah I don’t know something about it it’s just really really tough so I got to get back into it here soon Matthew you were learning center just like your three years old drag in your club and Dad’s giving lessons and all of a sudden you get I’m going to put my money on that kid being a star golfer before it’s all me too yeah no doubt about yes well you brought up one last little asking or anything did you guys know the uh did you guys know the sex with your kids before they were born or no no yes 100% surpris okay then interesting I always find that interest dive into the different mind here yeah I have twins one came out one way one came out the other way a double surprise double surprise I want to know with twins that’s too many variables there’s two like just I need to know like I got to know with with twins I understand stand like playing playing the odds with just one kid with two that’s just there’s already too many things going you’re playing as zone defense no matter what you do at that point I’m I’m shocked he went in completely just we weren’t sure um if we’re going to have more than two kids and then my wife pulled me outside and said hey check out this ultrasound and I looked at it and I said wait a minute there’s something here there’s something extra two dots right here she said yep thing for the Long Haul yeah my second story for you guys is going to be we’re going to keep it in the NL Central just for a second here because the red lineup they’ve also been struggling offensively heavy lifting for their lineup and Brooke I was trying to think like where is this in comparing some of the great starts to a season and what it would look like over 162 so he’s on Pace to hit over 280 which in today’s day and age of baseball outstanding with 41 home runs and 104 stolen bases so that’s the pace that he’s on that pace would be the most ever for a player with 30 home runs or more to steal 104 so he is potentially putting together a season that we’ve never ever seen before and also I think that when you’re looking at some of the young bright stars in Major League Baseball we talked about that what is going to grow the game of baseball it’s young exciting players like that when you’re going to see the Reds you’re wanting to see Ellie daylight Cruz even if you aren’t a fan of the Reds you’re paying attention to what he’s doing now Brooke you better not be talking about the A’s coming up and you better not be talking about uniforms So Randy go right ahead well on the flip side of the Cleveland Guardians the Houston Astros are terrible they’re 10 and 19 they’re in last place in their division they just sent down Jose Abu Jose Abu was a an MVP a couple of years ago and they sent him to their minor league complex their pitching is not what they expected to be although they did get a hitter and ronell Blanco the 30-year-old rookie is 3 and0 he he’s been fun but overall with a new manager in place the Astros have been a massive disappointment and when we talked about Cleveland and how they’re at the top of the standings the the Astros are at the bottom of into this season where a lot of people thought the A’s would be lucky to win 60 games you’re very surprised by I am so you want to give us one more Story one more that I think everybody’s going to talk about that’s the uniforms and apparently they’re going to get changed they’re going to fix this thing before the All-Star break which is a Hot Topic among amongst a lot of fans across Major League Baseball and after you saw the uniforms you can understand why and I was very excited until I read the part where it says well the changes are coming in 2025 and with Fanatics still being involved I joke the other day that we won’t see those changes in the new uniforms come in until 2026 because of fanatics but I’m glad that they’re finally making a change to this because I know some players have said they’re fine with it they’re not fine with it it doesn’t look good when you see them compared to the old jerseys it’s a huge difference the quality looks different everything the were probably your bottom four guys so Matt’s ineffectiveness allowed the Cardinals not have to use those guys so they should have the main guys back today if they have a lead in the seventh eth and in his most recent starts and then you have afterwards in the game we played the sound earlier of olar maul and even Stephen Mass talking about the lower back issues that he’s been dealing with we still have Stephen Mets talking about no no no no no no that not the three stoes enough to finish guys he’s been um working through low back all week and you can just tell physically that he couldn’t rain out you can come back with these guys and krid is another one and let’s just say that Hesley isn’t available today I I think that you could go with kitridge to close the game out JoJo is your eighth inning guy and it’s probably the best case scenario that you could have MH I have a question and and I know the answer and I don’t blame the Cardinals for this but was Zack Thompson much worse than Steven matz and if there’s if they’re relatively equal why is Thompson the guy that gets sent down to the miners and and to the bullpen I think money is part of it that’s what I think you know you you try to justify the contract and and also he’s a veteran just looking at it from a baseball sense of things you know I I looked at his first couple of starts and the repertoire that he had and Matt’s change up was a really good pitch it was really good in his first start against the Dodgers and now it’s just getting knocked all over the place so if he can figure out that change up and make it effective and that’s what you’re hoping then Steven matz would be my guy and it’s there but for whatever reason it’s just not consistent and do you have more concerns too about giovan gagos what can you do with Gio moving forward I think it’s the role that he had yesterday which is kind of mopping up in games in which I don’t think I can use him in a game in which it’s tight or he the Cardinals have a lead unless it’s out of necessity it’s more about when you’re trailing in games he should have been able to preserve a one-run deficit yesterday absolutely that’s his role right now and Brooke you wonder rightfully so whe whether or not it’s too early for Sam robertsa he’s got 29 strikeouts and six walks and 29 in a third to me that’s the key is command and he’s clearly got command down there why not and he’s on the roster why not give Sam Roberts a a start up here I think he may see that I think he might and if mattz is ineffective Again by the end of the month early June I think it’s something that you have to talk about I’d be shocked if they’re not talking about it right now 3 and0 with a 1.82 down there in five starts you have to see what you have I’m just interested too about eventually will we see Gordon Gro Michael McGreevy do you also though and I like him in the bullpen don’t get me wrong but in this tight situation where you don’t know what’s fully going on with Stephen matz if he needs to go on the injured list do you put Matthew Liberator back in the starting rotation I would not and I think Liberator has had an opportunity in the bullpen and I know we got to run here but he’s had an opportunity to condense his repertoire he doesn’t need to throw four pitches out of the bullpen he can get by with two sometimes three when he goes three Innings but he doesn’t and he can go all out that’s the key to me look at his Effectiveness with the fast ball and getting in on righties which he did not do before so this is something to consider as we get a phone call looks like from Kyle Gibson so that means we need to go to break we do we’ve got uh Kyle Gibson on the line we’ll do one minute here and Kyle will join us next here on another terrific performance yesterday Kyle good morning thanks for the time how you doing good morning guys thank you how are you guys doing good congratulations on the win yesterday how’d that feel to uh to get the team win but perform the way you did yeah it was good it was H it was a fun one you know anytime you can go out there and execute a game plan and actually make the pitches you want to make it’s a good thing so sometimes it doesn’t always work out that way so um and watching watching Jack on the other side you know being teates with him last year for a little bit and then knowing you know his his time here in St Louis that was fun to sh in the mouth with him and and it was a good first game unfortunately didn’t work out the second game but um had a chance to win the series and win the road trip today yeah what a performance it was by you and Jack flarity yesterday you guys were going toe-to-toe there and also a lot more swing and miss that we saw from you in that win yesterday what was working for you um you know I I don’t know that I do too much different uh from from game to game you know I mean at least the the plan doesn’t start too much different um you know I say now it’s probably not completely true but I can’t give away everything but uh I mean I think I think it really just kind of depends on what I see the hitters are adjusting to and you know what pitches they put in play what pitches they take early on you know gives me a pretty good indication of their approach for the day um and you know lefties I feel like we did a good job you know ion and I did a good job of you know using the cutter away using the change up away um and then going in when we needed to so anytime I can X you know take two pitches on that outside P or the hitters um and most the time it works out for me KY what did it mean to you when your manager stuck with you at the bases loaded late in the game game is on the line and he gives you that vote of confidence yeah um and starting pitcher we we never really want to come out of the game so uh you know if we get ourselves on a mess we love love getting a chance to get ourselves out and um you know after after everything settled down I went up to him in the Dugout and B the Cs and um you know it it means a lot to have that boat speaking of that and with that basis loaded Jam in the seventh that Dan was talking about what is just going through your mind in that situation of how you’re able to maneuver through it uh you know I I had a couple pitches in mind that I wanted to uh win and lose with um and you know in those situations you know both the Ries the right I walked and then you know came at the end you know I was finding a way to get to my slider and Ed since um my slider felt really good uh the last few Innings and um you know when when they Pinch at can of you know it was it was really kind of what’s the game plan to get to a slider here what’s what’s the game plan to kind of get his mind off the sweeper so I can get to it so um you know and then with the righty same thing I know he took it and I know I walked him but um know that pitch was just feeling too good at the time to to uh have the the game kind of hanging in the back on anything else Kyle Gibson with us on 101 ESPN hey Kyle do you remember at what point in your career you became that convicted you said you said to yourself okay this is the pitch I want to get to this is the pitch I want to throw and it’s my responsibility and it wasn’t anybody else’s it wasn’t anything that came from The Dugout or the or the catcher uh signals when when did you become comfortable enough in your own pitching skin that you basically said okay here’s what I want to do and that’s a good question um um you know I it it wasn’t early in my career that’s for sure um you know because I think to to be convicted in that um one you have to have confidence in yourself in in that pitch that day um or to you have to know your preparation has been done and if your preparation’s been done and you can trust it and that’s something that I would say in 20 17 2018 around there I started realizing that you know my dayto day my ending to ending confidence needs to be put in you know that preparation and not in results because if it’s in results then I’m going to be up and down but if I know that I’m prepared and I know that this is the pitch I need to throw then it’s a whole lot easier to have confidence in it so in that situation um you know my slider felt good I I knew that to to rties you know that’s obviously you GNA be my best pitch and um that preparation allowed me to have that confidence in it’s funny Kyle because I was saying to Brook and Dan earlier one of the things that I love about you and I I watched you a lot with Philly because we talked a lot before you got to St Louis because you live here so I I paid attention to you and you’re a pitch maker there are throwers that will throw a pitch in a certain situation and then there are guys that will make a pitch in a in a basis loaded two out situation there is a difference between throwing and pitching and you seem to have adopted at least from what I’m visualizing the art of pitching is that a correct assumption well you know it’s um I don’t necessarily view any of my pitches as what I would think of as a standalone pitch right like uh you know there are pitchers in the game that you know they can go up there and throw six to 10 to 15 of the same pitch in a row and probably have success just as much on the first one as they do on the 15th one um you know I don’t know that I have in my mind one pitch that I can do that with so all of my pitches play off to each other so if I want them to be effective you know I need to be for the most part using at least three of them to all headers um and if I’m doing that then you know where my confidence and my Approach and preparation come in is when I’m doing that well you know I like to believe that you know then I can make those pitches and and use them at the right times and hopefully have success and sometimes like you leave it in the middle and it doesn’t work and sometimes it does but you know that is definitely ping what you say Kyle we’ve talked to you a lot about how good this Bullpen is and Matthew Liberator is now a key part of that conversation showing that he can pitch multiple Innings of relief scoreless inning for him yesterday coming in relief after you what have you seen from Libby in this role in his progression he he just seems really confident in in what he’s doing right now and I think he should be right you know he’s up to 98 with a two really good breaking balls um and you know with his the success as a starter you know has the has the feel for a change up there’s not many buing and some people are goingon to run into and the hitting coach says all right he’s got four pitches and he can throw them all for strikes I me as as a hitter in the seventh eth ninth inning my guess is that is not what you want to hear because you have no idea which ones are coming at you and you might only get you know two pites so uh it’s a really really match up and you’ve got a buing guy coming that kind of velocity a a good KY are you on the bus right now headed to the ballpark yeah just got on it’s the 9:30 leaving in five minutes yeah guys’s giving you trouble for doing an interview with us or what no I no they nobody said anything I don’t know maybe maybe I got them just scared enough I don’t know I around me but they’re all kind of in their conversations and uh I don’t even think they can tell that I’m doing this right now if you want any dirt I mean if you picked the right person I might be able to give you some dirt on I probably wouldn’t even know it well who’s sitting by you we we’ll take it we’re we’re in talk radio this is what we do believe it or not yeah believe it or not the guy that you just brought up a seat in front of me and he didn’t even B an eye so iation I love it yeah it’s it’s good Lance is two seats ahead of me um he’s got his farming hat on his I think I can it’s got a corn cop on it I don’t know what I that’s shocking you know you know hey hey Kyle what what is your preparation like after you pitched yesterday in the next five days what’s your routine like between starts um normally uh depending on how I feel that first day which most of the time isn’t great uh you know it’s it’s trying to take you know three days to feel good for a bullpen and then uh as long as I feel pretty good on my Bullpen day then I’m not too worried about the next couple days but really trying to rest and recover and I won’t do too much today I won’t throw um might not even you know get too loose enough up really I’ll get the arm moving a little bit and see the soft tissue Specialists here but um probably won’t do a whole lot probably try to rest and and give the body a chance because um I started not growing at all the day after I pitch probably six or seven years ago and uh just it works in 32 extra off a year for me so I feel like that’s pretty big for my for my warm recovery hey Kyle we look at the standings every day I know you guys don’t because you compartmentalize and you really are literally in a day today living the moment proposition as players but here we are on the 1st of May and this isn’t a great conversation to have but you guys aren’t in the cellar anymore the team is playing well are are you feeling things coming together for the Cardinals yeah I think that’s you know I understand for fans that’s it’s a lot different conversation and a lot different feeling right um and it probably is a little bit you know more frustrating to even think that we don’t necessarily look at the standings but I mean until you get to I don’t know a 100 games in hund 110 games in like I mean you can have a whole different team on the field from April to May to June and uh and then it come together at the right time and all of a sudden you he’s just fing standing so but we feel really good about you know where we’re at as a team obviously we’d like to be you always want to be first you know wire to wire be the team that D they chasing but you know as a team we feel really good where we’re at like you said we’re playing good baseball and you know we really we really couple Innings that have gotten away from us as a pitching staff you know one of mine included and we’ve only had a couple games where as an offense you know we just couldn’t figure out the other guy so um yeah I mean we’re we’re really confident about where we’re at because you know when you have a great Bullpen and you have a great defense then you know that can provide consistency for a team KY I’m curious about your delivery and how you start it’s basically starting from the stretch and it’s a very simple delivery to the plate have you always done that or is that something that you learned along the way no it’s kind of morphed over the years um just a little bit I used to you know been sideways I would say on the mound in some fashion for for a long time but um you know I’ve sometimes over pivoted my right foot as I’m about to pick up my leg and go my delivery as I’ve stood more parallel on it’s gonna help me avoid that move um and and trying to keep myself more alive with don’t play I got a lot of levers and a lot of long lmbs moving everywhere and if those things you me side to side it’s a bad deal and that’s why I brought it up thank you very much hey Kyle uh two weeks from Sunday May 19th you are going to be the host we will be the MC’s for swinging for impact out at Top Golf in Chesterfield and it’s a great event every year this is your first year with the they’ve been together now this group for eight years they have one play playoff win they have nine playoff series and just one playoff win and when you look around now and you see the people that were parts of super teams I think we could argue that the Golden State Warriors with Durant along with uh Draymond Green Klay Thompson Steph Curry that was a super team the Lakers should have been a super team they haven’t wound up being that uh it just seems to me like in sports and maybe this is in part because of money the the draft and develop philosophy seems to be working in hockey and in basketball the winner six-month long Sports Draft and develop seems to be working more than veteran old guys it’s really tough to tell because of course you can never have enough Talent you want the superstars we always talk about that you need multiple superstars on the team is it more about somebody who’s able to Wrangle all those personalities and is able to make them put their egos aside but just recently I could think of you know with the blue Stanley Cup run you look at what Craig brwy was able to do when he took over after Miko seeing how much that locker room changed you had a lot of different very talented players in that room but Craig buuy was able to really have them put their egos aside and come together as a group so is that what it’s about more but I don’t think that team was very talented I think that team was an exceptionally hardworking team they they didn’t have anybody like a Zach Heyman or a Conor McDavid or a leon Dr idly or or even U you know when you look at the Toronto guys the the blues didn’t I I don’t think that there was nobody on that team let me put it this way capable of winning an MVP award I would say maybe Bennington yeah maybe Bennington we didn’t yeah we didn’t know anything about him until I mean you’d heard about him a little bit in the minor leagues but you had no idea what was about to come um you’re talking about putting ego aside I would say putting money aside you know coming into a situation where Superstars say I’ll accept less to be a part of this Buy in and lesser to your point putting egos aside and I think this really started when you had free agency and there’s been super teams in the past with draft and development like we were talking about with the Celtics but in free agency I think this started with the Dream Team like you know organizations looked at this and said man we maybe we can do this on a level that we do it in we did we just did it in the Olympics but can this be done in Pro Sports I just think a lot of teams looked at that as being the example moving forward if you can pull it off and we even even mentioned the Miami Heat right but and that’s kind of the last one where it was a bunch of free agents that got together the the Warriors to their credit that was a draft and developed group with Thompson Curry and green but when you look now at what the NBA is offering the number one seed in the west the Oklahoma City Thunder it’s a bunch of kids the Minnesota Timberwolves it’s a bunch of kids the uh the biggest stars in the game Curry James are out now uh so Philadelphia had the process forever I don’t know if it’s going to work for them Clippers are still in I guess the Clippers could be considered a quote unquote super team but even even with the 76ers if this process somehow survives it’s not going to last just because of of only just like bottoming out and then signing good free agents it’s going to last because they got a guy in Tyrese Maxi in the middle of the first round who developed into a secondary Superstar for the guy from the process it just kind of proves that getting James you know getting James Harden and and the Tobias Harris and all that stuff that didn’t complete the process but getting guy like Tyrese Maxi draft and develop from your system from day one that might be what actually gets you there with embiid it’s not looking like this year because embiid’s hurt but it could be what actually gets the 76ers to that next level I go ahead well I don’t think basketball is like well let me I’m trying to equate this to baseball because baseball is such a crazy game like the Yankees Haven it won since 2009 and they have loaded up with superstars and being able to spend in free agency with no cap there is the luxury tax with that if you go over the cap but some teams are willing to do it another one recently that I thought would be much better as the San Diego Padre’s yes I mean they loaded up with great talent and it just did not work out you look at that last season especially on paper that should have been a really really good team but then you heard all of the stuff that was going on behind the scenes where there was a lot of different personalities that weren’t meshing together and so that’s why I brought up the Craig buuy example putting it together with hockey of you have to have the right leadership in that room that can really Coral those personalities and get them all on the same page no doubt about that and that’s the key but I wonder if you’re better off having a really hardworking group of guys that are willing to subjugate their egos as a unit and come together if that might even be better now than having a bunch of talent and be loaded like the Oilers are can you mix in both I think you can have both well Colorado did that right Colorado when and to their credit the one team that is Bucking the trend is the Vegas golden knights there there’s no doubt that that’s a super team building it like a super team it fun to watch too I love watching super teams even if there there’s a lack of winning I I enjoy watching the Thunder I’m not the biggest NBA fan but I’ve paid attention to them because of the young town they have and they’re just an exciting group to watch you you’re seeing the same players over and over again and I respect LeBron James the fact that he’s still playing at this age at this level I mean he’s absolutely incredible and Steph Curry as well but do you think that the factor you factor in their age into this conversation that maybe we’re seeing the the decline father time is undefeated and that could be more part of what’s going on there I totally agree with you there I I think that’s a big part of it I I think and AD is a part of this too you get to the other side of 30 and you play as many and now you’re required to play games in the NBA you have to play at least 65 if you’re going to be eligible for the MVP so they don’t have as much of the load management as they had and as you get older you’re more apt to get injury Jimmy Butler got hurt I know it’s a knee injury but Miami doesn’t have Jimmy Butler now and it is Brook to your point you look at a young team like the Celtics uh you look at a young team like the t- Wolves you look at a young team like OKC they seem to me to have a better chance to succeed in these particular PLS and by the way hate to give credit but let’s give it where it’s due the Denver Nuggets have done a great job of drafting and developing they that’s not a team built on free agency but it’s those teams now that in the playoffs that I look at and Matthew you watch more playoff basketball than I do they seem to be the ones with the best chance to win this thing yeah absolutely you get your core player you get you get two or three guys and then you know you don’t bring in Stars I think Aaron Gordon’s a great example of of kind of old school team building and like this the they have their homegrown guys in joic and Murray the kind of stars that they hit that weren’t top 10 picks and they took another players another team star who never actually was coached the right way was never taught to play the right way in Aaron G bring into your system and now you him in your system as a younger I kind of feel like that’s what we see the alltime great do we don’t think about guys going on those teams to chase Rings we don’t talk about the guy who was a 26-year old free agent who was better than he ever had been in his career with that Championship Squad because they ra you know the the tide raises all boats that’s an important factor it’s not about the star you bring in it’s how well that you can bring in that mid-range free agent and and bring them and incorporate there that into your system but you need the Homegrown guys who have been there for four or five years to give you the base 61 n says has there been a super team in hockey I can think two and they did it two different ways one was the Oilers and Gretzky Curry Anderson Messier coffee Grant fur and then I look at Detroit when they went out and got everybody and they were awesome so it’s two different ways to do it you know some of those guys with the Oilers were drafted there brought in developed and then you look at uh what the Red Wings did Luke with Tai Brad Hall Dominic hasik uh Chris chellos Brendan Shanahan I mean they were just loaded and it just seemed like there was no chance of them winning games we’re talking about Eric Brewer being a captain and one of the games I know you’ll remember Randy that I remember that was tough to watch was the night that they retired Bret holes Jersey and it was against the Red Wings and about 5 minutes in it was 5 nothing yeah it was it was incredible just how good they were and you have another super team currently we talk about the the Dodgers all the the time and their checkbook baseball but they haven’t won a World Series since 2020 which I know that it’s hard to do that but when they are spending money like they are that doesn’t always equate to championships no that’s the biggest thing I I think that’s the point here is the Cardinals I I think we could argue that the the 2014 team was a super team pretty much brought in from the outside 2011 was draft and developed though and you can do it both I I think he used to do it both ways better but I think we’ve reached the point now and it’s probably more because of the choices of ownership and not wanting to spend a t ton of money the best teams are going to be drafted and developed I think you have to draft and then supplement with threee agents Houston Astros yep we we got a text here uh from 34 just feels like the NBA doesn’t have stars in their Prime right now I I want to address that only because ear like about right before Carri Davis uh moved to the fast lane me and him made a bet on the air that Anthony Davis that uh Anthony Edwards wi an MVP in the next 5 years that’s a great example of like six months ago you casual NBA fan not have known who Anthony Edwards was or how good he was you now know because of this playoff run that he’s he’s the next star in the NBA he he’s the next guy coming up he will win probably win an MVP or or be on that rung for the next five years that’s young Stars develop every year in the NBA John Morant developed and then disappeared because he got hurt for all we know he comes back and all a sudden that’s another Young Star there’s there’s young guys in the NBA it’s it’s it’s looking good I think that’s a good point yeah because Anthony Edwards not somebody I paid attention to or even knew but now I know know who he is one when he goes up against KD because he talked about how KD was his Idol Kevin Durant and how much he looked up against him and just seeing those two go back and forth and Anthony Edwards saying afterwards that he just wants to kill everything in front of him you can see that tenacity that he brings on the court I like young players like that I do too and donic is in his prime he’s a superstar and beid has an MVP under his belt he’s in his prime obviously yic has two MVPs he’s in his prime I get what you’re saying about Durant and LeBron and Curry kind of phasing out but there are guys if you’re if you’re Yannis yeah there there are guys if if you’re watching that have won MVPs that are playing great that are in their Prime Jason Tatum yeah perfect example going back to what you were saying Randy about Drafting and developing I think a misconception about the Yankees late 1990s teams was that they had Jeter Rivera Bernie Williams pada I mean these were all guys draft in pett it was drafted and developed and then they went out now they did have big checkbooks to supplement a Tino inz and Scott broas and some of the guys that they brought in however the core of that group was the four core and that’s how they won the Championships and especially when you look at the 96 98 99 teams if you’re looking for comeback players most improved those two in my opinion are doing way more than expected Gibson did have that one blowup game against the Marlins but the adjustments that he’s made since then I mean that is exactly what you needed and the star rotation and that’s why the Cardinals went out and got Lynn and Gibson am I allowed to go with two do it yes okay I got Wilson conteras much improved defensively um you know what you’re going to get offensively he’s been solid and I thought about him as my MVP even but I’m going Wilson conteras and then the other guy most improved would be Mason win uh Mason win you know hit what about a buck 50 last year I was a little concerned coming out of spring training with the way that he was hitting but man as he’s shown he can play defense at a high level and uh he’s also hitting the baseball so I’d go with Mason wi Mason wi came up last year had 137 plate appearances and had a 467 Ops he’s up to a 785 Ops after a month this year so I’m with you there and I’m going to give you a second one as well and I believe the role change has as much to do with the Improvement but Matthew lior looks like a different guy that’s a good call too so I’m going to go with those two Mason wi somebody just text it in as their MVP I like that thought about that I thought about I thought about it as well I mean def I mean how how important has the defense been to this team overall for for them getting a couple early wins in the season and the only guy that reallyu hit the only guy who’s hit here’s here’s uh one thing I’m going to throw really quickly for the weno award uh my uh my secret uh Darkhorse candidate and that’s going to be Kyle Gibson who we just interviewed earlier and this is a great stat from Brand uh BK uh from last night who threw out that Kyle Gibson is the first Cardinal starter with six straight outings of six plus Innings since wayo did so in 13 straight in 2021 he’s literally doing something for the Cardinal pitching staff that hasn’t been done since weno who’s a better candidate for the wayo oh it’s a good call good call that is a good call by the way from the 636 Gibson for sure Lynn hasn’t been very good do you guys agree with that I think Lynn’s given me what the Cardinals expected to get from him exactly I I look at like Gibson Lynn and gray put them all together is your free agent signings for the rotation and their erra is under three yep as a portfolio they’re great all right biggest disappointment I think we can all agree are we unanimous on Jordan Walker yeah yeah unfortunately yes yeah I I was going to throw Nar in there we were talking though off the air Randy you made a great point I mean he had such a limited time in spring training a quick rehab assignment and he just hasn’t come up and and done what we all expected and I was going to throw Steven mats in there too Steven matz hasn’t been what you needed nor expected coming into the season I think I would go with Steven matz especially with what we saw yesterday now he’s dealing with lower back issues no you already did it twice you already I know exactly it’s already been three times now it’s too much no Matthew thank you the Cardinals are now in a position where you don’t have really many other options for your starting rotation because you send Zach Thompson down and you don’t know what you have with some of the other guys some of the younger guys like a mcre grao and Sim robera you would like to see him come up eventually but it might be too soon so you’re in a tough position with Matts and it’s just the continued injury history that he’s had over the years and they even tried to really have a slow introduction with him into spring training to avoid that but once again you’re in this position with him I really like Steven matz great guy and somebody that you want to be your friend and I’d like to ride bikes with him cuz he he’s he’s a bike rider but I’ve come to expect him being hurt yes unfortunately yes um I’m going to throw a couple of guys in there too as a two-headed monster to lead into my MVP but they should be recognized and that’s JoJo Romero and and Andrew kitridge and the way that they’ve thrown I I still go back to last year with 41 leads lost you win half of those games you’re talking about potentially being a playoff team a year ago yeah you build a bullpen for any manager and they’re going to be better and our first month manager of the year for the Cardinals is olly maral o maral shocking did everybody have that you went out on a limb on that one they’re no longer in the cellar they’ve battled their way into fourth place four and a half games out but playing better got the white socks this weekend terrible team you know what we’re talking this time next week probably a little bit different story I would hope I would think exactly I know a lot of people want to find more negatives than positives with Oli maral but what are some positives that you have seen with ol maral this season compared to last year I think how he’s handled the bullpen you know that that’s one of things that he can control I go back to yesterday he did not go to his Bullpen when Gibson was kind of on the ropes with the bases loaded stuck with him very smart decision if if that would have backfired there’d be a ton of people saying well you you should have kept Gibson in it it worked and the way that they have found a role for Romero the way that they found a role for kitridge what Hy’s doing 78 n i mean give him some credit the way that he’s used them I think his of the bullpen has been great and he’s he clearly listens to the show which is great but I always go back to the HGH was it HGH uh Holland no it was the Kansas City Bullpen HDH it was Herrera Davis Holland I love having a lead after six and using guys like he’s using Romero kitridge and Helly to close things out give yourselves nine outs whenever you have a three-run lead or less after six and he’s done that will you get uh all three today with a quick turnaround I think that’s something to keep an eye on in this game because Michaelis doesn’t go deep can you bridge the gap to the big three and if the big three are even available then Romero drops down to your eighth inning and then I would say krid would be my closer pretty good by the way the Cardinals overrated and that’s just not a good look in as lar V says you’re number one market you’ve got to get kids from that number one market to play for you and the number one thing for me is that it’s recruiting and that’s why Eli drinkwitz has been so good is because he’s recruiting locally you see him you can see him all the time going to high school games He makes himself very visible out here in St Louis and doing that will continue to drive more St Louis and to pay attention to the games even if they aren’t an alma moer you’re going to go show up to go support and see the local kids are you not totally I uh I looked at number two on my list show the the difference it can make if a a lum gets involved with nil saw with Luther Burton we’re now seeing seeing it with Brady cook so get local alums involved with the kids and I think if you do that if businesses get involved their friends their family members more so it starts to spread all of a sudden you get people involved and want to go to these games and credit to Kaufman and Townsley they support Luther Burton I know the Emos is involved with Brady cook he’s from the he’s his family owns Emos though right isn’t that correct uh they own a number of a number of locations some Emos and then you’ve got U our friends at schnooks who support Luther Burton the they’re old Vienna with the Luther buron chips and they’ll get mentions I I hope it’s worth their while to get involved on an nil basis but the key thing Dan you said it if you’re going to win you’ve got to have businesses paying for the win and this is a way that you can be a part owner of a franchise of of a sports a big-time sports franchise by getting involved with nil and Eli has done a great job with your point that you made about Barry Odum saying what he did about the local kids but Eli’s done a great job getting into local schools and I I wonder how aggressive lared V will be with athletic directors at high schools is that a far reach to say that uh all of a sudden you get more support I don’t think so I think you you get involved in the community as much as you can you do the events that you’re talking about but bottom line it’s getting kids and any way you can do it I think more people will support you if you have local kids and with nil you are able to get those kids more involved the young athletes involved in this because then you could also use that as leverage as well they need to get to know these businesses what better way than outside of if you’re from here in St Louis you come here to St Louis you can get to know some of these businesses and it’s another nil possibility for them so I think recruiting is a big thing I’m interested to see Dennis Gates really tap into that a little bit more I really like him as a coach but recruiting here locally I think is still something that he needs to work on and now you’re going to have the competition of Kano Martin who recorded who worked well locally here he’s going he received those MVP oh good question good question all right I’m glad that one wasn’t on the fight he was part of a pretty he was part of a pretty good Cardinals team maybe he did he sneak in for as stopped watching it but I can’t stop watching it no matter how just terrible it is and well I think it’s going to get a little bit worse I don’t we’ve talked about this this kind of skirted by in the background of the draft last week but here was Roger Goodell on the Pat McAfee show talking about the potential future of the NFL well I I think we’re good at 17 now but listen we’re looking at how we continue I’m not a fan of the preseason I I don’t think we need waste of time right and energy I I don’t buy and I don’t think these guys like it either well they have to full spend full price but the reality is you know I I think I’d rather replace a preseason game with a regular season any day that that’s just picking quality right so if we get if we got to 18 and two that’s not an unreasonable thing the other thing it does which I thought you were going to is that ends up on President’s Day weekend which is a three-day weekend which makes a Sunday night and then you have Monday off so that so the last thing he was referring to there if you didn’t get what he was referring to is that the calendar would then be extended by one week which would then put Super Bowl Sunday on President’s Day weekend which would me mean that there would be a baked in day off now on the Monday after Super Bowl Sunday obviously the part I’m focusing on is the just completely flippant way that he just said well the reason we would switch out one more preseason game for another regular season game is it’s all about quality right and just completely ignoring the actual variables that matter in this decision I’m not shocked that Goodell is doing it that’s his job is to be a spokesperson but just completely just to ignore the actual variables and just be like well I mean the only reason we have this decision is because of quality right not any anything else it’s it was just it was incredibly disingenuous by Goodell you mean like adding an extra game for television money yes and and just trying to equate a preseason game and a regular season game in just the actual thing we we’re talking about which is just the wear and tear on an athlete’s body like theual disc there was over 50 QBs this year there was over 50 QBs and the starters were getting mangled I don’t I don’t know if they could hold up I mean seriously I don’t know if players could hold up for an 18 game season well they’re they’re doing fine for a 17 Game season they’re still entertaining in the 17th game so I’d love it will they still have a line on it yeah that’s that’s all that really matters yeah that is all that really matters it’s the truth I love the three-day weekend though yeah he’s smart he’s thinking ahead and you know what he’s playing to the crowd I I wonder know isn’t it crazy that they used to have six preseason games and 14 regular season yeah so and it took him until now to say I I’m not a big fan of preseason I I have not liked preseason football for a long long time so would you push back training camp then a week uh that’s a good question yeah why why would you need an extra week you could start it on I guess you from a TV standpoint you still want to have the Hall of Fame weekend so two teams still start early but yeah start everybody else on August 1st yeah I was thinking uh you got to make the schedule work and if you did that and added a regular season game take away a preseason then you’re adding three weeks of training camp prior to a game oh two weeks you’re probably going to have two by weeks too for every team that’s a good point I don’t want to like Roger Goodell but I will say that those are two pretty good ideas especially moving with with the three-day weekend it’s something that needs to be done with the Super Bowl the bad guy he is a bad guy but it’s but the thing is is the NFL is so hard to just stop paying attention to they’re unbelievable aren’t they it’s the best reality TV out there it really is my daughter and I were talking last night about how how great and smart it was for them to re act to the NFL is scripted conspiracy theories with ads yeah it was great you know to say hey okay now we’ve got the script and my favorite one was when uh somebody wanted to write Mahomes out of the script and Mahomes says hey guys I’m right here I wonder what the appetite would be for um The Players I mean this would have to be approved by the Players Association too you know what kind of money is involved for them is I guess the cap would go up more guys make money and uh they’ probably be for it I would assume and there’s a new leader of the nflp not demarus Smith who is frenly against multiple games and I would think that with younger players I don’t think that Aaron Rogers has any teeth anymore he voted against the 17 game schedule but I think for most players they say ah one more game but another $500,000 I’ll take it lesser players for sure yeah you know guys that are just hanging on on a roster would say yeah I get the extra money and I really don’t play anyway so why not uh add the game yeah and the starters already don’t play in the preseason even if there’s only two preseason games they won’t play no they
