senior writer and editor Scott Smith and unfortunately this is our first Insider in a a while now where there wasn’t another game coming up and it’s always sad but man I know that after you lose it stings it hurts we’ve been in the building we’ve seen how much this team thought they could win hoped they could win and there is that sting of that but to me this feels like such a successful season considering especially the expectations from the outside world to start in you have the 80 million in dead cap space and man was this a fun ride especially down the stret it was definitely fun I wouldn’t say this in front of a coach or a player because they generally are the it’s only a successful season if you win the Super Bowl ilk uh but if you take a step back from it as you said factor in the expectations the restrictions on the cap a lot of people thought this would be a rebuilding year for the Buccaneers but they won the division made it to the divisional round and now you feel like you have something there’s going there’s work to be done there’s players to be resigned hopefully but you do feel like you have a foundation and probably most importantly something to build on because they did lose it’s always so amazing to me the way football works the very next day we’re onto the next season there is as much as there an offse there is not a break it is immediate into overdrive of draft and free agency and combine and all these things so what is that going to look like don’t allow yourself to be fooled by this place the Gulf Breeze would have you believe there’s not a single care across Tampa Bay but for a team that outperformed expectations in 2023 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have another off seon of big questions to navigate Jason light is at the helm my whole career I feel like I get up every day if I don’t do my job well I’m not going to have this job there’s always something that you’re a little bit stressed about and it’s no different this year we still have a lot of players that we need to try to get back here and I guess over time you realize that there’s some things that are out of your control this year the to-do list includes resigning some of the team’s biggest stars including Baker Mayfield Levante David and Antoine Winfield Jr and this same list is headlined by the Bucks allor receiver Mike Evans I don’t think we’re very far off from being able to compete for a championship and the confidence I have in my staff help me put together another great draft bring in some more good players we’re just going to add to what we had last year which we thought was a really good team it’s time to put Tampa on the map of being a place where they do have great players which I don’t think a lot of people realized last year looks like a man who knows he’s going to be spending a lot of money very soon to try to retain some of his core players here Baker Mayfield Mike Evans going to dominate the conversation how are things going so far credit to the Bucs like you know people aren’t always so forthcoming with the plans I don’t the Buccaneers are not making this a secret they are going to do everything that they can they want to make sure that Mike Evans is a Buccaneer for life he had a career year at age 30 and then some of the other guys you talked about on that list Antoine Winfield We Believe will probably get the franchise tag Tristan wors is another guy that they could work out a longer term deal with and then Levante David is up in the air in the sense of how much longer does he want to play however he’s 34 years old he is playing like he’s 24 years old he’s coming off one of the best seasons of his entire career I cannot Envision him in another Jersey next season I think if lante wants to play he’ll be back in [Music] Tampa what’s up guys how you guys doing see good to see you when you have the season that you had last year Beyond expectations for the general public doesn’t it make it more incumbent to keep those core guys the Mayfields the windfields and the EV it’s not like you went 5 and 12 and we’re going to start over or something for sure and no we don’t want to nobody here wants to tear it down and nobody here thinks that uh oh we can just do this with any group of players um the reason that we had the year that we did is because big reason was because of those players so of course we want them back where you at with your talks with Baker is there any way that you would let Baker Mayfield hit the market what about with Mike I mean any chance he’s going to hit the market what do you think of the receiver depth in that room you think there’s a chance trisan might sit out what do you make of the uh the inside linebacker room your thoughts on the outside linebacker room Jason do you think you’ll have to use the franchise tag on anine you rule out drafting a quarterback do you think you have those answers those pieces already on your roster and when you’re up there and getting asked all these questions Mike Baker Levante the kicker Chase you’re like damn we’ve got some good players could be a worse situation I always like well that’s that’s the good thing that’s that shows that you’re picking the right guys um and then Tristan um Antoine absolutely these are problems you would have like Chris Godwin when we you know like those are the problems you want to have is yeah that’s a problem those are first world problems like pick the right guys and then you got to figure out how to sign them later but just pick the right guys right everything else works it’s easy yeah B Conor from SI how are you hey good Connor how are you I’m doing well thanks how’s everything good yeah we uh have history no no we just we won a lot more games than what he predicted us to get last year yes you had us for two I haven’t hanging up I haven’t hanging up in my office yeah no that’s fantastic I have wait till I tell my boss so I’m I was hoping that you were going to uh say that we’re going to win eight this year so does that mean that we’re going to win we got to multiply by and you guys are two and the Patriots with 11 so the rubrics off a little need to readjust the I’m glad I finally got to meet you what do we say we got to go back to the drawing board we have to look at the film that’s what I have to do breaking news out of Carolina so danam Morgan who’s been hired as the GM for the Carolina Panthers he brings on David Canales of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers now we had already made it clear within ourselves our plan was to bring back Mike bring back Baker that was our decision um not dependent on who the OC is now we wanted to bring in an OC see that would be more attractive for our players to want to be here Liam was brought up by Todd to me before he was brought up by anybody there’s a lot of guys and a lot of great guys that’s coming here and interviewed had a very good scheme but you know the answers come after they stop what you do well how well can you adjust you doing brother how we doing good good good to see you man Liam best fits what we want to do off defensively there’ll be some similarities but there’ll be some differences as well uh very bright mind very bright young mind understands football inside and out without further Ado he can tell you a lot more Liam colon I was taught in times of Crisis you think players not plays it’s not about what what maybe I like or the play that I might might like the most but what’s going to get the ball into our best players hands uh what can our guys execute at a high level and be able to go do and have confidence in to hear how things went this year in terms of the expectations uh for two to four wins and the go and win the division and win a playoff game uh those are things that you want to be a part of especially when things got hard not just the good stuff the opportunity to do it at this level and to work for an unbelievable organization what’s better than that so Liam Cohen who had always wanted to call plays got his first shot in Maine the University of Maine in 2016 and the year before he arrived that main team had scored about 145 points in the previous season his first season in 2016 they scored 245 points and then the next year in 2017 they scored 256 points then we go ahead to Kentucky now he came and went twice so uh the year before Liam Cohen arrived in Kentucky they scored 29 touchdowns in his first year as the offensive coordinator they scored 50 and then he came back last year in 2023 and they scored 56 so that’s 50 and 56 that’s two of the six times in the entire history of Kentucky football that they’ve scored 50 touchdowns in a season I think we want to jump into it pretty quickly honestly and there’s going to be a marriage there’s going to be a lot of things that we do and that that they have already done right formations motions some of those things the way that we call runs will be very similar so My Philosophy is to be able to throw as much at early on and and and try to see how it goes what up with you man good to meet you bro really good to meet you bro maker said unbelievable thing how you doing man Liam nice to meet you how old are you now uh I’ll be 28 uh this month you’re hit in the prime now yeah exactly seriously right that’s what a lot of those dudes started to feel was like that Prime was like that late 20s like when you really like start get it and now you like optimize of all like your training and all that how that be your hands um my I they Ain bad not they kind of mangled bro yeah kind mled SE I’ve seen worse like but they going to be worse they going to be worse Baker throws that Bakers on don’t fatigue dude keep what it just keeps going he ignited bro he ignited our organization when he came to us two years ago we were yeah we were in a bad spot you know we had 13 different starting old lines Matthew’s hurt Cooper’s hurt Alan Robinson’s HT morale was low practice was like we’re just trying to get through this yeah bro he comes in and starts yapping he’s got jayen you know like what’s up J you know going at him and now practice was fun again and and and that was a big I mean that’s a huge reason why I wanted to do this really was cuz he’s an igniter yeah he’s a he’s a he’s a great dude like a fiery competitive you know you guys must love playing with him man and it’s like you know like like you don’t complain about not how much is you’re working with Baker I know it was for a short time right how much do you think that’s something that that that the Bucks valued and what’s your conversations been with him and what was that experience like when he was in to coach a guy that’s as competitive as he is um that has that Moxy I mean that’s fun I mean you can’t coach that and when a guy has that ability and the ability to communicate with others um that’s something that I really wanted to be around and was very intriguing for us when it comes to the man who played quarterback for The Bu in 2023 Liam Cohen doesn’t need an intro he was a coach for the Los Angeles Rams at the time and after a SL of injuries to the quarterback in comes Baker Mayfield he comes in like Monday night it’s like 11:00 and we just kind of start talking get a game plan together and get him fast forward into it because it was on a short week we were already getting ready for some practices and it takes about 14 live reps and uh here we are and I remember sitting in in in Sean’s office uh before that Thursday night game and we both said to each other this would be a miracle if we win this game we heard there was Rumblings all morning it’s Baker Mayfield making his Rams debut Rams have to go 98 yds without a timeout Mayfield from his own Endzone caught to give them more life deep down the sideline and it is caught by scoic second and 10 Mayfield to the endzone to Jefferson is that possible [Applause] touchdown this is [Music] impossible all right let’s let’s talk about Baker Mayfield where do you think it stands with Baker and the Buccaneers still have not quite a week because the the the negotiating window opens on Monday but they do have plenty of time to still work something out do you have any inkling as to whether that might happen well I think we’ve seen plenty of comments from both team officials and Baker Mayfield that made it clear that if they can make this work they both want Baker Mayfield to come back now if you recall Baker Mayfield after last game said um if I’m back I want Mike back the squeaky wheel gets the grease it’s all been that way Mike Evans is a guy that you easily take for granted because he puts in his work and I’ve always respected how quiet he is but that has caused him to not really be noticed the way that he should be nationally so with Mike he was interested in getting a new contract done before the start of the season and when that didn’t happen he and his agent made it clear that they uh were not going to discuss the issue anymore until after the season and what that does is make it so now we’re talking about a very short window before Mike could become an unrestricted free agent and that’s going to be up to him now uh you wonder if at the start of the season if there’s any lingering emotions there that the contract didn’t get done he’s likely gone something I didn’t expect to have happen I never expect to see Mike Evans in anything except Peter and red Mike Evans in a Kansas City Chief’s uniform should be a scary thought to everyone to the perspective that yes it would make sense for for them to consider it if they can get him for the right price you sense any frustration from Evans or his agents about um this should have been done a year ago like you’re too late any sense like that is is he is Evans pissed off at this point or or or uh what’s his frustration well I think I think hopefully it works out for the best for him um and Mike and I have a great relationship all year so we’ve talked about this all year so um he knew where you were coming from right yeah and he’s so we’re I mean I think right now we’re in a good spot talking about it and and trying to make things work it’s always in the back of your mind is this going to be it you know I reminded him time after time that Mike this is you can be a buck for Life late late late Friday night we decided we better leave on first flight out Saturday morning get here so we could work on this over the weekend and um but when I got home I hadn’t had a chance to kind of debrief my wife about what was going on she was at home writing a letter to Mike and Ashley thanking them for everything they’ve done for us for this organization and as a what a role model they are to our kids and she said I been thinking about Mike I know I’ve just kind of been reading what’s out there I said you can’t believe everything that’s out there but she said well you know just in case he decides to to leave um I just want to let him know and Ashley know how much they mean to us so we ended up getting something done last night [Music] tell him Tempa this is for you tell him temp were you cheese you got to do it in one take man come on man do it how you do it at home you got to yell it you got to scream it it’s your chance you been waiting got to camera loud and proud let’s go D are you there we go I mean it’s it’s crazy because I’ve only lived in you know I lived in two states my whole life Texas and Florida you know this is home for us a Tampa and um you know when it came down to it you know me and my wife we just we wanted to stay here you know we’re comfortable here we love it here he’s one of those players that during this period in the offseason before we resigned him I couldn’t go anywhere without somebody asking me are we going to bring back Mike Mike was on everybody’s mind well the city means so much to me in the fan base and the relationship that we’ve created here over the last 10 seasons 10 years it was too too tight to pass out what he means to this whole community and fan base he’s one of those players that everybody feels like they know him personally thank you Mike well the days of free agency now you really got to appreciate and enjoy the moments these guys have because they don’t come around often that’s what every player dreams of you know to have the productivity and making it tough on an organization to to let you go this was my first general manager job and he was our first pick and my kids growing up with Mike watching Mike play every one of his games it was just all of it kind of Came Crashing Down at once that he’s going to be a buck for life is this Mike hey we’re about to put your name in you’re about to be a buck the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Mike Evans route here sideline it is a c Mike Evans L it Fly it’s Evans and it’s pull down what a that’s why you draft Mike Evans since you announced that you were coming out it’s probably not a day that’s gone by that we haven’t talked about to let’s go we’re home baby right here we’ve been in the playoffs four years in a row won the division three times won the Super Bowl Jason let’s go let’s go congratulations man it’s get it’s another me being his first pick I think that’s some sentimental value and I’ll always appreciate him for you know picking me first Mike I can’t tell you how excited we are here man you were our guy we’ll talk to you later congrats again man you’ve played with a lot of quarterbacks and you’ve been consistent no matter who’s throwing you the ball but can you talk about the relationship and chemistry you had with Baker Mayfield and at any time during your conversations did you check in and seeing what the likelihood that that guy comes back as well of course of course um you know me and Baker we played one season together you know I feel like we can build on what we did last year so you know hopefully you know we get him back but yeah me and Baker we have a really good connection and I think he’s an elite quarterback this point last year this was the darkest moment before the dawn right who’s taking Baker who’s going to give him a shot and where’s he going to go that’s worth a damn anyway last year Baker Mayfield’s like I’ll go to Tampa for 4 million bucks I’ll be the guy after the guy and the guy being Tom Brady Let’s Go That’s my boy obviously it’s it’s kind of crazy to think about that I’m going in to sign a multiple year contract after the the journey in the last couple years I’ve been on um but just truly feels like a weight lifted off my shoulders Jason light the general manager said last week guess what reason why it worked here is cuz the chip on our shoulder kind of matches Baker’s chip on his shoulder and Baker went and he baled out it was Sunday and things were kind of going back and forth my agent and those the front office guys and um at a certain point I didn’t think it was going to get done I thought we were going to have to go test the free agency market but um I told Emily on Sunday I was like I’m either going to lay down for a nap and watch golf or I need to be outside and we went up and uh met up with Tristan and Meredith over at Salt Shack and we got I got the call that it was getting finalized there at lunch with those guys we got up and gave each other a big hug in the middle of the restaurant obviously had a couple margaritas just one of those moments that we’ll look back on and and cherish it forever now he’s got a three-year deal that’s worth nine figures 50 million of it guaranteed but I like what the Bucks are building NFC South just got much more interesting life in the Mayfield household is is extremely exciting right now Emily’s due and now Less Than 3 weeks I truly am so blessed to have somebody like her in my life I mean all the ups and downs she’s been consistent through and through and it it’s unbelievable we we tried for over a year to get pregnant it wasn’t the easiest time for us but then you know you look a year later and all of a sudden we’re signing a new contract to stay somewhere a little bit more permanent and she’s pregnant and we’re about to have our first child it’d be great if they didn’t let Emily in oh it is Mike yes she needs security clearance don’t let her in I think you know the past year the biggest hurdle was still trying to be myself throughout the process I think there were times but before getting to Tampa that I had lost that I had lost to Joy football and the hardest thing for me is I’ve always been um trying to control my own destiny the past couple years on this journey that that I’ve been on is uh ups and downs trusted God through the process and and look at us now and um it’s never time to be satisfied it’s just another building block of what’s come you know it’s funny it’s been a roller coaster season on the other side too for the Buccaneers started out three and one then they hit the skids now they’ve won five of six and we talk about their quarterback I’ve always felt Baker’s at his best when he has his Swagger and playing with his confidence and a little bit of arrogance out there on the field he has that in Spades right now he’s as comfortable and as confident as he has been at any point in his NFL career can’t wait to watch him [Music] play getting into the playoffs all you want is an opportunity to have a chance to win the Super Bowl and knowing that we took care of business in the first playoff game in an unbelievable atmosphere that you know that’s something as a competitor you look forward to Ric Flair getting the crowd fired up woo yeah there it is football coming [Music] up all right let’s go let’s go it was incredible it was a bit of a moment that you know looking back and reflecting on it where I thought okay we have our quarterback here’s one caught by uton and Kate out in the tight end is good for 15 yds play action from Baker that’s EV face wide open and a first down inside the 40 so far so good for the quarterback with the bad ankle and ribs it’s third down and seven Mayfield wide open there’s more again his second catch still working through this secondary and a [Applause] touchdown I was in my box with a lot of you know my staff and we were jumping up and down and so excited during that that I think I ripped buttons off my dress shirt second and four here’s another broken tackle this is the rookie Trey Palmer and he is gone touchdown Buccaneers go let’s go baby let’s go be ready Chris turo TI well inside field goal range wed it up got touchdown Tampa B I was looking for place that knows how to win that’s consistent with it it’s going to allow me to be the best version of myself and put me in a good position to have success and that this was the place to do it down there somewhere it was an incredible moment it was a moment where I I’ll never forget that there’s a lot of moments you’ll never forget and that definitely was a game that uh I think will Propel us here in the future um as you look back on it Baker Mayfield Jason light man did they figure it out they really did for me understanding who Jason is Jason’s a football guy kind of a small town guy that that works really hard doesn’t exactly love the camera just just our personalities Mi mixing together um might have different personalities on the outside but I think we’re all internally driven to want to win at the very high level and we might show it different ways but there there’s similarities there that bring us all together Baker it’s been 3 years since your last playoff win just what what is the W in like um we fought so hard to get to this point to get a chance to be in the playoffs and I’m so proud of this team tonight the way we came out and started fast um I just I’m so proud and so we wanted to give ourselves a chance and now we did just that we can play better than we did tonight but just trying to carry this momentum and uh stick together that’s the main thing for us stick together con appreciate it I brought a uh I brought a little oh no way did you really that’s aw that the the OG yeah that’s the OG the crash course it’s a little something it’s a little something a little bit I’ll be in a little bit you do good to see you appreciate it you doing how you doing good to see you assume it’s legit I still wanted to I was hoping to do this the other night meet you at the Anchor Bar on a napkin on a napkin it would have it would have been real given the terms of the contract is it fair to say that you left some money on the table here to get these other guys done as Jason’s been able to get all your teammates done and there’s more work to do to build a winning team and to have a lot of the key pieces that we needed back to to continue this run and and improve it um some sacrific have to be made now listen this is life-changing money and I’m not going to act like otherwise I I’m a winner at heart I hate losing so knowing that uh we get a lot of guys back and we can continue to build this for years to come is it’s a special thing no state taxes that’s a good point he set the tone for this team with his uh well for lack of better word uh he’s he’s probably a one out of 10 he’s a 10 on the prick scale thank you I’ll take that you that’s what you want your offensive lineman um and Baker’s kind of an offensive lineman in a quarterback’s body um so what about the fans the community and the culture around the Tampa Bay Area also makes this home for you for the next few years it it it’s a special place just just seeing the passionate fans the ones that talk about going to the old Sombrero the ones that have been fans for a long time that have stuck through the thick and thin as a football player you want to win a Super Bowl that’s the ultimate goal everybody sets out to do that from the beginning of the new league year um and you see what kind of pieces you can put together but being in an organization that has tasted it before is extremely important because they’ve they’ve done it and uh yeah you set your goals extremely high and that’s we’re at the highest level of football competition that we can be in and that’s that’s a big factor in it so Jason light had a checklist and that’s for sure and Mike Evans was the first to resigned could be a buck for Life Baker Mayfield quickly after that and a big one of course was putting the franchise tag on Antoine Winfield all those things accomplished but there was still this feeling of we still need to get Levante done and he had a great year in 2023 so uh I know that that was probably at the top of the checklist at that point for Jason light 3123 bucks b by eight on the road to Detroit the lions are heading to the NFC championship game with a 14-5 record after knocking off the Bucks today you got about five more I know the B L otherwise but around you going see I’m going take my time with it’s a it’s a chance that I might be done take my time with it at that moment there was a lot of emotions you know going through my mind at the time you know obviously you know with the the rumors looming about me you know retiring think the main thing man just you want to you want to keep your mental health you know good it’s a lot that goes on to this game it could be draining you know a lot of you know added stuff added pressures come on to it with outside distraction when you are around elite players Elite like lante it makes you realize it’s such a privilege to be here lante is still playing at an extremely high level the highest he’s played so we have to have Levante back we have to have him back like Mike you enjoy the greatness you enjoy the greatness you enjoy the time that you have him you know you give him his flowers now you give him his flowers when he’s done as well so Levante was approaching free agency again and he clearly would have suitors if he went out on the market but the Buccaneers wanted to give him the rendee barber treatment basically yes you can go see what deals are available out there but come back to us and we’ll give you more because you need to be a Buccaneer for life you need to be here you think of Ronde you think of Tampa Bay you think of Tampa Bay you think of Ronde so and that’s the same with lante being compared to a guy like rondai is incredible runday played 16 Seasons here not many people play 16 seasons in one organization and for him to be able to do that you know it just go to show the type of person he was Leon Davis future future of Fame look are we biased probably we’ve watched levante’s whole career and we know what a good player he’s been that whole time and how undervalued he’s been 2030 lante Davis H well you talk about guys like Bobby Wagner or Luke Keeley with the Panthers and these guys are probably Hall of Famers and deservedly so and yet when you stack up the accomplishments if I didn’t tell you which line was which you might not know who was Levante and who was Bobby and who was Luke tackles for loss Levante has 160 in his career which is one of the highest totals in NFL history and Bobby Wagner’s at about 89 the Blitzer he fumbles the bante David all over lante has 28 forc fumbles in his career Bobby Wagner has six in the same number of years and almost the exact same number of games the ball gets away and the punch out from Levante David mindset man mindset attitude Mr steady lante David you talk about Luke Keeley a defensive player of the year he only played eight seasons so you have to look at the numbers per season and again Levante has a huge Edge in tackles for loss and force fumbles what a big teame put in by lante David that’s how I gauge the great players when you need it most lonte never fails to show up physical football game day let’s go physical football game day play smart play discipline dog don’t forget dog play your ass off it’s opportunity of a lifetime bro opportunity of Life Time a few years ago we did a project where we went and studied all the best alltime bucks not just our picks but picks in the past we had gone through a few drafts where I wasn’t happy with myself the selections overall still got some good players but wanted to do a better job what are the qualities other than what you on the field make these guys become great players we put those together we called it I am that man we have a silhouette of a player in our draft room and that player is lante look at this circle these your brothers right here dog these your brothers right here man I wouldn’t want any better dog I wouldn’t want any better when we have our meetings and draft is he that man we’re basically asking is this Levante regardless of position man that’s that’s crazy you know just for me to be the opinion of what NFL organization is looking for kind of like hard to Fathom you know stuff like that just you just wish that you know you know my my parents can be able to witness stuff like that just understand like they played a huge part in you know me being who I am today and what NFL team is for out of the next best player that they want to get the reason why you know I play the way I do is for the name of my back and also for the name in the front how does it feel to you when you hear people say like in light We Trust you know I’ve been humbled so many times here that it doesn’t it doesn’t I you know of course you appreciate it this is such a a b volatile business where things can change overnight the reason that I love working in the NFL and I think I can talk on behalf of most people here is because we have passion for the game and the reason we love being around the game is because of players whatever industry you’re in if you get to see the best of the best perform you have a really deep appreciation for him when you make it into the playoffs you get a little taste of how close you are to that Super Bowl uh so we obviously came up short understanding that if we come back and we get some of these little things corrected and we go from there sky’s the limit for this group realistic is always trying to win the Super Bowl it will never change that way it’s how you win it we’re trying to get get better off of everything we done a year ago because although it was good it wasn’t good enough when you give something time it gets better look at all the teams that have been together the core players and coaches have been there for a while you should be ex happy about this team because I’m back Baker’s back Mike evans’s back knowing the pieces that we brought back here we’re going to set expectations extremely high and that’s that’s just kind of how this organization does it and although we have a new system a new coordinator we have guys back that can pretty quickly how’s it going bro to be able to work with these guys these these Pros Pros that we have in this building uh is really exciting we have what it takes we have the roster we have the experience one opportunity I know the drive that we have in this locker room I know the guys that we have in this Locker Room everybody want to be great so we definitely going to take this thing to another level next year I understand the focus level I understand trust me I understand it but have some fun man have some fun all four quarters today don’t hold back it’s no tomorrow take care of what you got to take care of today I think we all saw how well we came together told you the answers are all in this room especially during some times of adversity a about how you starts how you finished box three 1 2 3 I think there’s still a large contingent that thinks last year was a fluk let’s keep working man let’s keep work that inspires us inspires me to prove that we belong in the conversation with the best all
