Wyndham Clark breaks down his win at shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am | Golf Today | Golf Central
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1

it’s been quite a year for Windam Clark
of course when that Us open at the Los
Angeles Country Club in June his third
win on the PJ tour in the last nine
months set a career best in scoring that
60 some 190 ft of putts made The Strokes
gain putting of over five in that third
round and takes home $3.6 million first
place
prize and Windam joins us now Windam
congratulations you know we’re used to
seeing Champions crown on the 18th
screen how’d you find out that you won
was it a text message a phone call a
knock on the hotel door a carrier pigeon
how’d you find
out yeah well there was a bunch of
things I was at at the house I was
staying at this week and I got a text
saying that they’re going to make
announcement at 6: p.m. and then on a
text stream I was on with a bunch of
friends they said oh that can only mean
one thing and and then I got a call um
from Steve John the tournament director
saying hey hey I think this is going to
happen they’re going to make an
announcement and then the PGA Tour
officials called me with everyone on
there and and told me exactly what was
going on and so I found out maybe about
20 15 20 minutes before they made the
announcement that that’s what they were
doing when when players sign up to go to
Pebble it’s kind of like signing up to
go to Phoenix here you know what you’re
getting this is an event that has
unfortunately been plagued by bad
weather but some great players have won
54 whole events there like Johnny Miller
Phil Mickelson Dustin Johnson does it
feel lessened in any as a competitor
that you didn’t get to go out there
yesterday and make a statement and close
it
out yeah I mean it’s always a little
unfortunate um if a tournament is cut
short and you know you never dream of
winning a 54 hole event you know this
way um or any event this way um but with
that said I think a lot of us kind of
knew that going into Saturday’s round
that it could be the last round and and
for me I just I took that mindset and
said all right I got to go pedal with
medal and and try to shoot as low as I
can and you know I’ll be honest I was
really trying to get into the top 10 and
have a good finish and as I got hot and
started making more and more putts
that’s when I started thinking about oh
man we have a chance to potentially win
this tournament or at least be in the
lead going into Sunday and to shoot at a
historic round at Pebble Beach it it
honestly felt like a final round coming
down the last four holes cuz there was
tons of fans I had the nerves of trying
to shoot 59 break course record and and
then I did you know look at the
scoreboard and go okay depending on the
weather tomorrow we could have a chance
so you know it’s it’s it’s not ideal but
at the end of the day I felt like I
played really good golf and I don’t feel
like I got cheated at all or or anyone
else did well Windam you’re at Pebble
today I understand you got there two
Sundays ago and you were on the practice
screen with nine different Putters how
do you go from that doubt to making
nearly 190 Ft worth of putts in round of
60 in winning this golf
tournament um yeah I I’ve been a good
putter for a long time uh my first few
years on tour I was one of the top
Putters statistically and I’ve always
felt great about my putting but I’ve
kind of had a little bit of a a lull
these last uh kind of six seven months
in putting and so I knew it was still
there um I just needed to find what that
was and and maybe changing something up
uh was going to be the answer and and it
was I I went I used the same putter I’ve
used at the US Open I just took the line
off of the Putter and then I switched to
left hand low and those two things
mainly were the things that helped me
feel comfortable over the over the ball
and and I kind of started building some
momentum uh throughout the week made
some nice putts on Thursday to close out
the round and then on Friday really
putted pretty solid and so going into
Saturday’s round I at least felt
comfortable and felt like I could make
some putts and then you know as that day
transpired I really you know the hole
felt huge and it felt like I couldn’t
miss so it’s uh it’s pretty amazing to
have that feeling on the
greens well when you play Great Golf
inevitably you’re taken into the media
center where you’re asked a lot of
questions including about the current
state of professional golf you said you
chose Legacy over live how difficult was
that decision in these complicated
times you know I it very difficult I
think U you know has has a great is a
great product and there’s a lot of great
players there and um you know I don’t
know what the future holds between you
know live and PJ tour or whatnot but I
just ultimately thought about it with my
team and asked a lot of people and I
said you know there’s a lot of things I
want to do in golf I want to try to get
to as high in the world as I possibly
can I want to uh continue to contend in
majors and try to win majors and and
play at courses like PE Beach these
historic events that have been here
forever and so I ultimately did choose
Legacy um that hopefully I can put my
name in the history books as one of the
greats and so it’s something that you
know obviously that requires a lot of
work on my end and I have to play good
golf but I at least wanted that
challenge so I ultimately chose the tour
and and feel really happy with my
decision in your comments last night on
that subject Windom you said you were
committed to the tour at least for this
season which would seem to go to the
heart of what has happened in golf over
the last couple of years where players
change their minds or priorities change
or the live offer gets too big is there
an argument that PGA Tour players ought
to be
contracted um you know I I don’t
really you know I don’t know I don’t
really have much of a say on that I
think we do play for a bunch of money um
and I think we should all be very um
appreciative of that
and you know I I don’t really know
golf’s unique and it’s we’re not part of
a team and so we’re somewhat independent
contractors and so yeah that’s a tough
that’s a tough uh tough answer I don’t I
don’t know if I really have one for you
uh but currently I just really like
where or what the PJ tour has and what
they have to offer and you know I I just
hope that regardless of what happens I
just hope that golf gets back to being
um where it was where the best players
are playing against each other on iconic
golf
courses and if that is the objective at
the end then it’s probably not
unreasonable to think that the guys of
the Strategic Sports Group who invested
$3 billion dollar last week they’re one
would assume if they’re going to give
Equity grants they’re not going to give
them to guys that they think could walk
out the door at a moment’s notice do do
you think that is likely to be part of a
conversation that’s probably going to
happen in the future with
players
yeah I I could see that um I would
imagine that if you do there’s probably
going to be some penalty I imagine you
have to sign something to where if you
did leave you wouldn’t get uh that
Equity so um that that’s just me saying
that I don’t have any information on
that yet we we kind of were briefed on
the um you know the alignment with SSG
and uh just kind of the outlines of it
but we haven’t set we really haven’t had
a player meeting to where we know
exactly what that looks like and I think
they’re even still figuring some of that
out so um yeah I don’t know the full
answer to that but I would imagine I
imagine
so when major championship winners like
yourself are pulled into a lot of
different situations a lot of questions
are asked of you from people like us
from the fans from sponsors how has your
life changed since June when you won the
US Open at the Los Angeles Country
Club
uh yeah I just waiting my first PJ Tour
event kind of changed some things and
then it’s amazing the magnitude of what
winning a major does and you know I made
the ryer Cup
team I’m definitely more recognized um
you both on and off the golf course and
and then there’s a lot lot of people
pulling you at different directions both
the media and uh sponsors or whatever it
is and so my time has become a little
bit more precious but it’s you know it’s
what I’ve always dreamed of of trying to
be one of the best players in the world
so I wouldn’t trade it for
anything so PPP had the strongest field
we’ve seen all year on the PGA tour wind
you’re the guy leaving with the trophy
did you feel pressure to validate that
US Open win against that caliber of
competition no I I don’t really I don’t
really feel any uh any pressure to
validate what I did last year um
obviously I want to follow up last year
with another great year here but I’m
trying to you know eliminate any
pressure that I put on myself and not
listen to any the outside pressure I I
really just want to go out and be the
best I can be um you know mentally and
physically on the golf course and and
let the scores take care of themselves
so you know it’s amazing to start off
the year with a win and I hope there’s
multiple to come throughout the year but
I also don’t know what’s going to happen
so I’m just you know I’m honestly trying
to take you know each day at a time and
each tournament at a time so I’m I’m
going to enjoy this one but you know the
great thing about golf is I fly home
today and and and get ready for Phoenix
this week so got to get right back on
the horse and and try to go win another
golf tournament on that note wendam how
do you maintain your physical and mental
levels coming off of a very you know
intensely you know a physical week
mental week draining week you know not
knowing when you’re going to play and
now you come to this Gauntlet that is
TPC
Scottdale
uh the good thing is it’s home so I’m
going to be in my own bed I don’t have
to travel too far and so that I think
that helps makes it easy you know I’m
taking today off I’m doing media flying
home uh which will be much needed for
some rest um but then yeah I you know I
think we just become very accustomed as
PJ tour players to you know pretty much
move on after the tournament’s over you
obviously want to embrace and enjoy the
winds uh but you have to move on and be
ready for the next week so I I’m going
to do everything I can in these next
couple days to get my U mind mentally
ready for for TPC and all the fans and
the excitement that that tournament
brings and the good thing is there is so
much energy at that place that I I don’t
think I’ll be lacking any energy so um
I’m really looking forward to it well
get some rest and get some really good
bubble wrap for that beautiful Crystal
trophy we appreciate the time we’ll see
you here in
Scottsdale awesome thank you
guys
so some interesting comments there Damon
on this whole idea of whether or not PGA
Tour players ought to be contracted
because this is the recurring issue in
the game right now is that at least from
the player side of things loyalty
appears to be transactional they they
Chang their mind they change decisions
they make commitments that they then do
not hold up and the equity grants that
are going to be distributed to the most
influential or needle movers are
successful among the players one assumes
have to come with some kind of
obligations you think the the
independent contractor status is no
longer compatible with the future of
this game it’s a great point you make
and I think SSG you know investing in
the PJ tour they’re not doing this for
charity they’re not doing this to to be
close to the players or to play in a few
prams or get to stand close to the
players onal with the players these are
Savvy businessmen who are used to making
deals and getting a return on their
investment and how that looks when
they’re not exactly sure who’s going to
be playing in said golf tournament
tournament a year or two from now there
are still so many open questions but
make no mistake Arthur Blank and John
Henry and Steve Co they are used to
building championships in business in
other endeavors and they will expect the
same in their relationship with the PGA
Tour and they’re certainly accustomed to
having their talent contracted with at
least a minimum degree of obligation
that attends whatever they’re actually
responsible for doing yeah for the money
in this game well I guess we’re going to
find out in due
course

  1. Augusta National & the Pga Tour dodge a nightmare with the winner being someone who's already major qualified otherwise they would have to allow a 54 hole event winner into the Masters.

  2. The PGA should not allow any commentator to mention the names of the traitors Phil, Dustin, etc etc.
..! Actually, I'd like to see them banned from USA television!😡

  3. Join LIV ! It’s a hundred times more exciting then the snooze fest that the pga puts out every week.

  4. The only 'damage' I've seen LIV make to the PGA Tour is double their salaries. My gosh, those payouts are unreal. For what?? It's just like LIV, with better ratings really. If LIV is paying $400M PLUS $4M Per tournament, maybe that's worth it…I guess. But who knows what deals their getting really, and losings sponsors etc…I don't like 'team' events …they pretty much suck. When I see the USGA have an amateur team event for a national title, I might pay attention then.
