Anthony Kim’s FIRST Match in 12 YEARS

This is a big one! Just before Anthony Kim’s second event on the LIV Tour following his return to professional golf, we got a chance to play a match with him. I was more nervous for this match than I was for almost any match I can remember.

we’ve been watching what’s been going on
with Liv versus PGA Tour and you know
we’re going to go check out a Liv event
for the first time which feels like as a
journalist a responsibility uh we’re not
being paid to go we weren’t sure whether
to come we were like oh I don’t know is
it bad to go to live event but at some
point some stories just have to be told

I definitely remember what it feels like
to to hit good golf shots and be in
contention and play play well uh but I’m
a totally different person I’ve had some
experiences that I wouldn’t wish on
anybody through those experiences I’ve
learned what is important to me being a
father is the greatest gift that I’ve
ever received and I’m not going to let
her
down yes we’re back I thought about it
we should do the tattoo bat what a
shot it’s like this guy’s been
frozen get one life you go for it you
know and don’t let anybody stop you
we’ll see if that putter works
all right so Anthony how do you usually
do matches with a guy like me five
handicap I try to get as many strokes
from you as
possible and try to play for your car I
don’t I have a rental car I’ll take it
have you played a half stroke match I
have I have done that in the past long
time but I’ve done it do you feel good
about it yeah we’ll do it how many half
Strokes like every hole sure right cool
that was well what’s the what’s the the
for yeah got to be for something I get
your next tattoo or you get my next
tattoo babbe he’s like ah

just pull hooked it so I think we should
do the the tattoo bat if you’re
not what are you thinking for your next

I’ll get it cuz I need a reason to get a

I haven’t been that nervous for a t-shot
in a long time what do you guys like you
can either go something over through
here go down or we could go out that way
kind of think we’ try to go through the
small one there little six iron maybe I
like that
terrifying wrong tree but I’ll take

Riley Riley JP Riley Quincy have we ever
had three caddies for one this is silly
looking the reason why there’s three
caddies is we we basically booked seats
on the proam plane because we said Jojo
and keer are going to play the wind’s
hard off the right I it’s going to be
hard to fade this thing but I think I
could just hit it right through these
trees right
here whoop
that didn’t even come close to the Gap
so the half-stroke match is a really
interesting way to play golf with
someone who’s significantly better than
you basically it’s a half stroke so if
we both score a
four I would actually score three and a
half because I get a half a stroke a
hole so then I would win any ties
essentially if AK wants to beat me he
needs to beat me by a full stroke this
could potentially fly there yeah like I
know there’s a lot of wind but
H yeah I didn’t I didn’t catch all of it
I almost think it’s another
layup this course is hard
folks good job there all right why do
you get three caddies I I I mean how
important are you it’s it’s in my
rider Riley wants to go pro oh yeah yeah
she said she’s been dreaming about it
since she was three wow what’s some good
advice that you have for someone wanting
to turn
pro um lot of good advice I didn’t
listen to most of it I wish I did but
you know don’t let other people’s
opinions affect what you’re trying to do
right so I was pretty good at staying
focused on what I wanted to do and my
goals but I still let some outside
voices that didn’t matter affect what I
thought about myself and and what I
thought about what I was trying to do
with my life so if you have a dream get
one life you go for it you know and
don’t let anybody stop
you yeah of course Anthony when were you
first like I want to go
pro when I realized I I was bad at
school
my dad looked at me one day I was
shooting hoops and I had spent probably
7 hours out there and I’m sweating and
I’m telling him that I’m going to make
the NBA and he said look dude you’re
you’re short you’re you’re you’re not
going to be faster than the guys that
are playing competitively so you need to
focus on school and then he saw my
grades and he was like well we got to
figure something else out so um so
that’s when I started taking golf
seriously I was probably
14 15 years old wow you know I moved out
to Palm Springs when I was 15 and got
with my coach um Adam shriber and and he
helped me for free um my my parents
didn’t really have the funds to like pay
for a lessons from a guy of his caliber
but he saw some talent in me and and
gave me an opportunity to do what I’m
doing now we got 66 yards a little bit
into the wind he doesn’t spin his wedges
too much so I think we’re just going to
play the number here and it should be
perfect
all right okay I was honestly just
trying not to shank it I H like seven
Shanks on the
Range these greens are not slow and
they’re smooth smooth no hair

see that I like when the course is you
have to be closer to par to win then
than um you know guys shooting a million
under even though it’s probably more fun
for the people watching to see a lot of
birdies I mean on some level like the
whole point of golf is it’s reallying
hard yeah I just want to be in the right
mental Place life is too short to to be
super upset I would get upset if I
played a bad round of golf for for 2
weeks and it would bother me eat at me
and and now whether I play good or play
Bad and obviously I played I scored
poorly in my first few events after the
round I get to see my daughter and I
could care less what I shot I I know
that the next day I’m going to lace up
my shoes and and go uh try my best again
legit I don’t think I’ve been this SN
playing golf in a long time like second
green still hella ner
like it’s a different kind of
nervousness it’s not like like the first
she was adrenaline now I’m just kind of
like nervous I don’t know got to get
over
it

that over the last 10 years I was in a
real prison in my head head so being out

so when I was first ordering clubs I
just had a friend of mine who he
represents a couple guys out on tour so
I called him and told him I was
interested get back and he said let me
get you some gloves called a few
companies asked me what my specs were I
had no
clue um I knew I used uh nine degree
driver um and just normal clubs whatever
they were maybe a degree or two flat
yeah and when I got them I was hitting
them 20 yards further with the irons
than I did when I left and I haven’t
gotten any younger so I was kind of
surprised and I found out the lies or
The Lofts are all jacked yeah yeah so
the amateur thinks they’re hitting it
further yeah with the technology the way
it is the ball’s going so much farther I
have to adjust back right like I can’t
use my old Lofts so I’m going to do that
after this week um I’m going to start

yeah I’m I’m with it now you know I’m

you’re swinging on okay rather than you
know the toe or the heel when you were
talking about Scotty I was like ah I
really want to tell him about lab but
like I know it’s a business decision at
the end of the

this lie cuz see what it does yeah what
do you think of Eric’s golf swing he got
a good golf swing first few holes were a
little rough like it was for me but he’s
got a good golf s two up in the match
you feel
confident feel Spectacular Now that I’m
playing professional golf and playing
against amateur and two up really feel
accomplished
all right honestly I’m just glad I hit
the golf ball you
know that’s going to roll hard

on cuz also like I never saw him play so
for me there’s like a Mythic

week uh we got a little stricks on two
iron and then boki wedges this week was
the first week we kind of like got on
the track man tested different stuff
like the 3-wood yesterday they kind of
mess with the settings all those little
things so he kind of just was all in
this week kind of digging into the tech
and uh getting some good stuff out of it
so we’ll see see what happens old head
covers on those yeah he’s got his
President’s Cup head cover and uh this
thing will definitely be in the trash by
the end of the day he won’t he won’t use
it tomorrow I know him 122 up a yard 123
adjusted 140 shot cool hard pitch or

first one to the last one and he’s now
in jail for a long long time so we can’t

maybe I don’t know and you’re thinking
it’s a unicorn at minimum yeah unicorn
maybe my daughter’s hand I don’t know

faces right when I to the first
event it was like the weirdest feeling
that I had never felt before like I had
just it was a time warm yeah and when
I’m playing golf that’s why it feels
surreal even playing right now it feels
surreal
just doing this again for a living you
know um it’s awesome but it’s still
surreal yeah 89
