Throughout Tiger’s career he had the innate ability to seemingly hit every shot flush. Fellow PGA Tour player’s would often marvel at the unique sound of his ball striking. The effortless, powerful Tiger Woods swing, although superior, wasn’t the only contributing factor. What many don’t know is that Tiger was oftentimes ahead of the curb when it came to club fitting and his equipment, even having his own team dedicated to giving him every equipment advantage. He also was extremely accurate with his strike location on the club face, therefore producing more control and consistency. In this video, and the first episode in our 2-part series with Chad Dietz, we’ll walk you through this important strike location, and how you too can experience the Tiger Strike with your irons!

hey everybody Milo here back out at
beautiful Superstition Mountain today
we’ve got a special guest Chad Deets
from forward golf what’s going on guys
and today we’re going to talk tiger
strikes tiger strikes so Chad tell me
about the concept of a Tiger Strike what
exactly is a Tiger Strike a Tiger Strike
is something that we’ve come across in
forward golf when we’re seeing when a
club is working really well and we want
to understand why it’s working and how
it’s producing the ball flight that it
is and the consistency that it does well
it comes down to a Tiger Strike the
Tiger Strike is a ball that hits in the
center of the face but some of the
bottom of the ball is actually going to
hit below the bottom Groove so if we
sprayed this face and we hit a shot
perfectly we would see that some of that
ball is below the bottom Groove now for
some people they might say hey doesn’t
that feel a little thin well there’s
that old saying thin to win you ever
heard thin to win right that’s a thing
um but it’s more than just that when we
catch the ball low on the face what
we’re doing is is we’re compressing the
golf ball the the golf ball is coming
off of the face before the Earth is
actually involving itself in the shot if
the Earth is manipulating that face
before that Ball’s off of it our
dispersion cones will get bigger so
that’s basically what a Tiger Strike is
when we keep the ball low on the face
that Precision is going to create the
reality of our ball flight the physics
that we deliver to the ball will show
themselves if we take that Earth out of
the shot awesome so that’s what a Tiger
Strike is I have seen pictures of tiger
irons and he’s got a nice little wear
Mark just as you’re describing and we’ll
we’ll clip that in a picture of his
irons what concerns you about hitting
that ball farther up the face well what
I’ve seen is is again I I I do most of
my fittings indoors and indoors it
creates kind of a sound that we’ve got
accustomed to to understanding a good
strike from a bad strike when we hear
someone hit the Tiger Strike it makes a
very particular sound and when they
don’t we don’t hear that
sound
and sometimes when people are hitting
the ball like two groups high on the
face I know that they’re going to
internalize that as it felt good they’re
going to go man I hit that run really
good but I know that it wasn’t a Tiger
Strike now a lot of times when we’ll see
that their ball will start a little bit
more left than if they had tiger stried
it the ball speed might not be reduced
very much but they’ll lower their spin
rate the ball starts to miss long and
left again when I hit my seven AR I’m
set hey 175 but if I don’t Tiger Strike
it and it kicks my face a little bit
left I could very easily hit that ball
182 from the middle of the Fairway it
kind of acted like a flyer and it’s like
well what happened my club hit the ball
first it’s still hit the ball first but
while the ball was still on it the club
gets jostled and it sends my ball into
an area that I’m not exactly sure where
it’s going to end up so a lot of college
players that I see are hitting the ball
higher on the face they don’t they’re
misdiagnosing what a peer shot actually
is and that’s my biggest fear I don’t
want you thinking you’re hitting the
ball as good as you can when it actually
could be a little bit better one of the
keys there that tiger strike is the
you’re making contact with ball before
any ground so your low Point’s actually
out front of the ball yes so if you’re
if your low Point gets right under the
golf ball or even slightly behind it
then you’re you’re getting a little bit
of ground interaction into the strike
absolutely could catch a flyer if even
off of a fairly tight lie you could
almost catch a fly or get a little grass
up in there absolutely we don’t want to
allow a variable into our shot we want
to let the pure physics play out if we
can the way to do that is to get the
ball completely off of the face before
that club’s been interrupted so what you
said is true it’s a lowo game this is a
game of low Point can the low Point get
too far forward yes but we don’t see it
very often from most golfers would you
say that that’s true it’s a better
player problem I generally would say
it’s a better player problem so if you
have that problem you’re probably pretty
good you’re probably pretty good most of
us have problems catching the ground a
little early or having that low point a
little too far back so that’s when we
get into this conversation of Bounce The
More Bounce I take off your Club the
more I’m pushing low point forward
unless you’re digging Leading Edge yeah
so that’s where I was getting ready to
head your company forward golf is all
about fitting and how different
variables play into creating those tiger
strikes right I just went through your
system a little bit and found that what
I actually play is pretty darn close
already which I knew cuz I kind of fit
myself into them absolutely but
different variables made huge
differences in where I hit it on the
face the ball would go all over the
place just by changing a couple
variables absolutely the the the
variable tests will show itself in your
ball flight and your performance now you
are a worldclass instructor with a world
class swing and you have an idea of what
your ball should do based upon your
Dynamics so it makes sense to me that if
you sat here long enough and Dilly dled
with your club that you would come out
with something that’s going to be pretty
hard to beat because you’ve got all
these elements working together and you
got the skill set to understand if your
swing’s a little off where you need to
put it so in that regard it makes sense
that your Club works for you but a lot
of people don’t have that skill set or
that knowledge and we’re left to take
responsibility for our good shots and
bad shots when we don’t know anything
about our Golf Club if your golf club is
way too upright or if you got way too
much bounds there are some swings that
could have produced a really good result
that you’ll never get to experience
because it was getting in the way well
you might have to make alterations that
we really don’t want to make to your
golf swing to hit a good shot we want to
be able to make good golf swings and
have them produce good shots
compensations and consistency don’t
really mix too well okay so Chad you
just grabbed a couple of clubs out of
your toolkit here mhm what did you grabb
I grabbed our high bounce option and our
low bounce option so the first test that
we run through is a balance test what
I’ve noticed when people come into our
facility and I let them warm up they
have a pretty consistent angle of attack
and they have a pretty consistent path
what they lack is the face control most
times so when I’m looking at the angle
of attack and the consistency of it I
think to myself well if their angle of
attack is consistent there’s no way that
both of those pieces are going to fit in
there equally one of these pieces has to
fit into the crotch of that golf ball
more often than the other and that’s
kind of how I start to piece this
together I try to show the people hey
your swing’s more consistent than you
think it is and I can prove it doesn’t
mean the ball’s doing it yet but if we
can test these variables to see what
accesses the Tiger Strike more often we
might just see more consistency in your
ball flight let’s let’s show the the
audience a closeup of different bounces
and what a Tiger Strike looks like on
the face absolutely so all really good
players when they have a club they’re
going to look at it from this angle when
you look at a club from this angle I’m
looking at Leading Edge and trailing
Edge this club the trailing Edge is a
little bit lower than the Leading Edge
but when I put my high bounds Golf Club
on there now you guys can see that the
Leading Edge is much lower than the
trailing Edge so this one’s got more
angle to
it the Tiger Strike the best way you
could ever hit a ball is when the bottom
of the ball is touching the very top of
the bottom Groove just like that now
anything below that we would welcome
because we know at least the ball’s
getting off the face before the Earth is
involved but anything above that first
Groove so if the bottom of the ball is
touching that second Groove you may hit
a perfect shot but if you did a th in a
row your dispersion Circle would be
bigger than if it was below the face
that’s that’s the the gist of it all cuz
when a guy’s a great play I mean a lot
of the guys you’re working with you know
Dana is looking for what an eighth of a
stroke here an eighth of a stroke there
yeah it’s it’s it’s so small we’re
trying to shave a shot or two a
tournament here and there you know
exactly maybe maybe sometimes one round
yes and I believe that on that level and
that’s that’s what I want to do like I I
want to help people who are taking the
time and effort to be good at this game
to get all of the juice out of that
orange and uh I start to think of these
like hey you know this isn’t much this
this high bounce versus low bounce it’s
not much but to a really a person at her
level or just any of us for that matter
it’s going to give you a Competitive
Edge and any Competitive Edge in this
game is worth it for sure and we noticed
it in my own fitting when we went
through it just now huge differences in
where I struck it where the ball went
absolutely what we noticed with you is
when the shaft got too soft we started
catching the ball too low on the face
and Milo started hitting it way into the
toe and you’re not a tow Striker but if
the club starts to do things that his
doesn’t well you’re going to start to
see that stuff so your club was matched
up really really well I don’t come
across that a lot but it makes sense
because uh who you are and the move that
you got so it sounds like my Scott irons
are actually pretty good for me Scott
did a good job you know Scott does a
great job I’ve I’ve actually come across
this product a couple times um in my
shop and I’ve always admired the designs
that he has the guy’s got a really good
eye aesthetically that’s a beautiful
Golf Club but more importantly we fit
you into medium bounce today and I would
say that that is definitely in the
category of a medium to lowish bounce
what you didn’t do good with was the
high bounce so what I’m trying to do for
a lot of people it’s not trying to find
the perfect Club as much as we want to
because as soon as we get it our swing’s
going to change a little bit it’s just
the way that it is we need to make sure
that you’re not going to war with your
arms tied behind your back we don’t want
the worst club for you so I’m basically
saying Milo stay away from high bounce
medium bounce is cool low bounce you can
get away with stay away from high that
was the thing that really affected your
ball flight almost more than any other
variable so in my experience the soul of
the golf club is not talked about nearly
enough I’ve had good players come to me
who thought that their clubs fit them
well and the the bounce profile wasn’t
right and we had to make some major
changes because it wasn’t allowing them
to hit the ball in in the face where
they needed to right either too low
mostly too low in the face cuz they had
too much bounce I think that’s a
critical component in the fitting
process is finding a soul that actually
works for you not just going to the
store and going to the rack and just
buying a set of golf toally what you
said is a is a great point and what I
find interesting about it is it it all
comes down to how we defined the word
forgiveness we have to Define that word
and and again every entity might have a
little bit of a different definition of
that I’ve chosen to create my definition
saying the club combination that
produces the most tiger strikes in a row
has to be the most forgiving for me the
key that fits into that hole the most
often the most consistently is going to
be the most forgiving for me now I think
some of the industry says if you hit a
little bit behind it you won’t chunk it
and lay the saw over it so they create
bounce they’re saying hey yeah you’re
not going to chunk the ball but you’ll
bounce into it you’re also not going to
hit very many good ones but that’s but
that’s kind of where I’m at I’m saying
okay I get it he doesn’t lay the saw
over anymore but you’ve just chopped him
at his knees saying he’s never going to
hit a tiger strike ever again he’s just
going to drop kick it and when people
who want to break 90 shoot 87 it doesn’t
stop there they want to shoot 85 and as
soon as he does what does he want 82 now
all of a sudden he’s looking at 79 like
that’s how golfers really work it’s It’s
never enough as soon as you guys get
over one Ridge you’re looking at the
next next Mountain over going oh I can’t
wait to get there and I don’t want to
cut anyone short of their maximum
potential so uh the word forgiveness is
an interesting one and I think there are
some models out there that are a lot of
balance that are not really going to
help in the long run I haven’t found a
lot of validity to that so Chad so let’s
hit a few see if I can create some tiger
strikes okay and then I want you to give
me a club that is sure not to help me
hit any tiger strikes I can do that I
can do my best to do that all right yeah
I would say I’m going to have you hit
your
why would I not have him hit his Club
when I just took him through the test
and he was clearly really good with now
here’s the thing about a Tiger Strike
we’re talking
about perfection it is very hard there’s
no like in between a Tiger Strike or not
you either got one or you
didn’t not a Tiger Strike but not far
from it well yeah not far from it it was
a little Healy but it was it was where
it belonged on the face the yeah the
Earth did nothing to that shot no face
was a little open hit a little off the
heel but you got the tress of that ball
flight that was well struck okay ball
started a little right flying really
straight that was my shot I think that
was hard to see but I think it was I
would say that was definitely Tiger
Strike that’s in the middle of the face
nice and low and again we just see the
ball flight very straight maybe a hair
out to the right yeah all right so
here’s a club that I think Milo may have
trouble tiger striking it but even if he
does Tiger Strike it I believe that this
club will give him a bad result so it’s
not about oh did I Tiger Strike it oh
this is the best club for me it’s no if
you Tiger Strike it is the ball doing
what it’s supposed to do so in fitting
all I’m really doing is looking at did
he Tiger Strike it did he match his face
to path did he Tiger Strike it did he
match his face to path Milo’s ball
should fall a little bit to the
right and this
ball okay let’s be real how much did we
miss our Target by a long ways and did
you hit it well I hit it dead I can’t
see the mark but I hit it dead perfect
so there’s a great example Milo’s going
to have a hard time hitting chunks on
camera in front of us cuz he doesn’t do
that he’s he’s a good golfer he just hit
that ball really well and that ball
missed about 35 yards left of Target now
what makes the ball go left the face was
close to path yeah there’s a lot of
variables that play in the face but that
must be an upright lie angle so it
pointed The Loft left yes the face being
too close to the path is what’s going to
make the ball end up left for every
degree we bend that club upright we’ve
closed the face one equal degree so when
Milo comes down with his natural swing
with this face is too close to path
Ball’s going to start left Miss left
every single time now if I gave Milo
enough tries with this club and said
we’re not leaving the range till you hit
it straight I figured out you could do
it the question is how far did we take
you from your original swing if you woke
up tomorrow how quickly could you
reproduce it just not who you are I
always say who’s leading the dance
I believe you should lead the dance and
the club should be accommodating you at
all times I think there are a lot of
golfers out there who are actually not
aware that that club is leading the
dance and they’re left to follow
it yeah that’s my shot just a little
push cut yeah yeah I love
that I start everything at my Target and
cut it so if you so if if Milo hits one
Tiger Strike that goes left I’m thinking
that clubs too upright I’m thinking
something’s wrong with it a Tiger Strike
that misses left for you is is like
saying something’s wrong with that Golf
Club yeah that’s how I’m looking at it
if you have a club that works like this
one I would say Milo you can take
responsibility for all your good shots
and all your bad ones yep go get they’re
on me fits yeah and that’s if every
golfer could get into that position that
would be a great thing that would just
be a good thing for golf for sure and
that’s that’s that’s that’s all we’re
trying to do so Chad that was an awesome
some discussion about tiger strikes and
how Club fitting relates to that and how
Club fitting can help a player be able
to be more consistent and take ownership
of their good and bad shots absolutely

  1. Does Dietz have an opinion about the V-sole included in Srixon irons? I'm curious because I'm a strong-grip golfer who takes significant divots.

  2. Is a FLUSHED iron shot the best feeling in golf??

This episode was a lot of fun with Chad from Foreward Golf and his team! Do check them out, and don't delay on getting FIT, it's a critical step in taking your game to the next level. Below is also one of my favorite drills to help you produce a TIGER STRIKE…

  3. I am curious as to how offset affects strike quality. I played forged blades from the 1960's until the 1990's. At my best I was a 1 handicap. now, at 68 years old and trying to get more distance and forgiveness with new Mizuno JPS923 irons. I find that I am unable to make good, consistent contact off of the ground and feel like bounce and offset are working against me.
