The Hard Pan Chip Shot – John Hughes Golf

You’re playing a golf course with less than desirable conditions. You miss a green and your ball ends up lying on nothing more than dirt, no grass what so ever in that spot. Yes, you are a bit unlucky. But you have to play the ball as it lies. What are you going to do?

John Hughes will show you what to do within this video!

Altering your set up and picking the best club for the condition is detailed within this video, by John Hughes, PGA Master Professional of Instruction and 2-time Teacher/Coach of the Year of the North Florida Section of the PGA of America. John uses the 6th hole of McLemore’s The Cairn Course, a world class short game course you must play. John happened to find a hard pan lie just off the course next to the cart path to demonstrate this shot to you. McLemore Resort does not have any hard pan lies around it’s greens of the Highlands Course, a Top 100 Course as ranked by Golf Digest Magazine.

John is also a Best in State Instructor as ranked by Golf Digest Magazine and a Top 25 Instructor of Golf Tips Magazine. According to John hard pan lies are actually a better condition to be in than others. So long as you know how to alter your set up.

What are those set up positions? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.

how many times have you come to the
green have a what you feel is a decent
Chip Shot and you find your ball in a
piece of barren grass no grass there at
all it’s just hard pan I’m going to help
you get through this problem and make
this one of your better
shots before we get into helping you
with Baron lies with a chip shot thank
you Dwayne Horton Charlie Rhymer Doug MO
and Ryan Emerson the four key players
here at McLemore’s Highlands course and
what you see behind me the car a
wonderful six hole short game course
that focuses on those distances that
most people do not practice 40 to 90
yards highly encourage you to practice
it at home but if you get the chance to
visit me at mmore you better believe
we’re going to spend some time here
baren lies chip shots most people oh man
I I got to get this on some
grass I get it but why don’t in a
competition you’re going to have to
learn how to hit it off of no grass the
real key here is ball position and how
you’re aiming your body not necessarily
the club we’re trying to use the bounce
of the club and contact the bounce with
the with the baroness with that hard pan
flat if you dig in here it’s going to
chunk it if you have this leaning too
far back that back Edge is going to
bounce the club right into the ball so
it’s really about setting up so when you
make ball contact and Club contact with
the ground
simultaneously that bounce is relatively
flat you’ve got to practice that though
you’ve got to set up and feel the
thump and feel the bounce notice that’s
not
going through and chunking it’s bouncing
where I have the ball ball position to
assure that it doesn’t dig in you don’t
want it so far back it’s going to set
the club in there to dig having it too
far forward exposes the trail Edge it’s
going to bounce into it start with the
ball forward and then as you open your
stance you’re going to have some forward
shaft Lane but not enough for the
Leading Edge to dig it’s exactly how I
practiced it let’s see what happens
here very clean contact comes out a
little lower it’s going to come out a
little hotter with less spin but if you
play that it’s a really good shot I’m
going to play this a little bit
higher in another video you’ll see how
to use slope as your brake I’m going to
play this about 6 to 8 ft left and see
what
happens ground ball contact all at the
same time with the club Club came out
pretty darn good I’ll take that every
day so again the setup position change
isn’t necessarily a swing change it’s
just that a setup change ball position
middle open up to where the bounce Still
Remains flat so you don’t bounce into
the golf ball thanks again to mmore

  1. Or if you don't want to practice this an hour a day fro a month, grip down a bit, stand closer, get the heal off the ground and hit the shot with the toe.
