Scotty sheffler the world number one
with back-to-back wins trying to make it
three in a row this week with the Texas
Children’s Houston open if you remember
leading into the 2022 Masters Scotty had
three wins was coming off a win in the
state of Texas and then went on to win
The Masters so we had four wins and a
major and we were just Midway through
April back in 20122 so here’s the
upcoming PGA Tour schedule they this
week in htown then it’s the Valero Texas
open that’s final stop before the
Masters April 11th through the
14th and the winners that we’ve seen so
far this season on the PGA tour the
storyline has been the long shots the
surprises the the players that weren’t
exactly on the short list of favorites
coming into the week I mean think of
last week with Peter malady he was 184th
in the world going into the valpar
championship was on the call for the p
to Ric open Bryce Garnett won for the
second time in his career on the PGA
tour was outside the top 500 Nick Dunlap
the stud Amer at the time going into the
AMX was outside the top 4,000 in the
world rankings but instead of it being a
a surprise it’s kind of been the status
quo for 2024 on the PGA tour with our
season in review so with that as the
foreshadowing what’s the best story
that’s emerged through uh this point of
the Season there are two that kind of
stand out for me and both of them are in
the context of the broader issues or
conversations in this game the Malnati
win at the weekend at the valsar to me
was really interesting in that it proves
the the essential Cinderella story in
golf that guys can be out there laboring
away find that spark make it happen and
that is what sport is all about but
until Sunday night that was the story
Sunday night on Saturday night Peter
manati was away the poster child for
people who think the PGA Tour ought to
be less players less tournaments just
more Elite stars because Peter even said
himself on Saturday night he couldn’t
really remember the last Sunday he was
in contention at the tour that’s the
stuff all of these elite players kind of
think is just clutter that they want to
get away from and so it’s a very timely
reminder of what the essential nature of
sport and the PGA Tour is that these
guys have earned their spot there and
they can deliver when it matters and the
other one that jumped out at me was
Matthew pavon winning the Farmers
Insurance at Tory Pines he was one of
those guys who got his card off the DP
World Tour the Top 10 rankings there and
it really diffused this narrative that
had taken route that it was somehow just
reducing the DP World Tour just creating
a feeder tour what that strategic
Alliance has actually done is not only
underpin the prize money on that tour to
keep it alive but also formalize the
pathway that all of these players have
wanted going all the way back to the
days of Peter rooster house and Tony
Jaclyn they all wanted to come here play
for more money play against the best
players in the world so those two wins
put in that context of the broader
conversation of the game I think both of
them sent a pretty important message at
a pretty important
time I would go with uh my best story
Nick Dunlap winning the American Express
being the first am since Phil Nicholson
back in 1991 to went on the PGA tour uh
players won a US Junior us Amer the
first to do so since Tiger Woods and all
the talent in the world um but to win it
in the fashion that did with Sam Burns
and Justin Thomas in the final group
with him staring down two accomplished
winners on the PGA tour JT is in a on a
path to a Hall of Fame career and Dunlap
on the 72nd hole makes a parut to
ultimately win by one it was just a
remarkable performance and the launching
point to what should be a career that
has many more wins to come on the PG
tour with how much talent this this kid
possesses so it’s a it was a nice jolt
to the start of the PGA Tour season for
sure um I think the the long
shots it’s been enjoyable to get the
different story lines but a certain
point you want the Stars to really grab
hold like we’ve seen with with Scotty
Sheffer like a sprinkling of long shots
is great and then you want to see
Goliath go on a run of just domination
as part of championship season which
sheer kicked off by winning the Players
yeah and that’s the thing there’s so
many Cinderella stories because all of
the elite players just simply haven’t
shown up for work this year the guys who
say this tour ought to be built around
them are not here and so when you start
to look at the the kind of guys who do
need to show something over the next few
weeks before they get to Augusta
National other than Scotty Sheffer who
doesn’t Rory maroy won Top 20 this year
Victor hin the FedEx Cup champion won
Top 20 this year Patrick kley one top 10
Max H one top 10 Colin morawa one top 10
we keep having these conversations about
how JT is struggling JT has a better
record this year than any of those guys
he’s at least managed two top 10 Jordan
spe has two as well but he’s got more
miscuts and dqs then he has top 10 this
season on the PGA Tour all of these guys
around whom the PGA Tour seems to be
gearing up its entire business its
entire strategy they’re not showing up
for work that’s a problem no 100% agree
and that’s been a big part of the
narrative and and rightly so mine uh
going into the Masters will be lud oberg
making his major debut at Ninth in the
world under the rider Cup winner yeah
and the rider Cup winner two-time winner
worldwide in 21 starts as a pro has made
20 cuts um has had six top five finishes
fours finishes among the top two either
first or second between the DP World
Tour and PGA Tour it’s been an amazing
run it could be f fascinating to see if
he’s in contention into the
weekend

  1. Victor Hovland is a perfect example of someone getting a little success then…boom…gone. I don't expect to see his name again for months.

  2. The PGA tour is in trouble if Peter Malnati and Matthew Pavon are the biggest stories of 2024.
