what a time to be Scotty Sheffer we just
to give you a little bit more context uh
Scotty Sheffer still searching for his
first win on the PJ tour that was just
two years ago but in a blink of an eye
he now has 10 Sheffer only needed 51
starts to get those first 10 wins take a
look at this the second quickest since
1983 that is eight fewer starts than
Tiger Woods only David Duval who won 10
times in 33 starts got to do that
Milestone quicker so with that let’s
welcome in gol Channel senior writer Rex
hogard Rex it’s been 39 years since
anyone has won the Masters and the RBC
Heritage back toback that was Bernhard
Langer back in 1985 for you what is more
impressive the four out of five wins or
the fact that he’s including events like
the players and the Masters in this
stretch oh I think it’s the four out of
five wins but it’s the quality of wins I
mean to your point I think there is
style points involved here not all PGA
Tour victories are created equal and you
look at what Scotty has done he’s done
it against the deepest most difficult
fields and he’s done it on the most
difficult golf courses just this year
Augusta National is first on tour in
degree of difficulty this season Bay
Hill is fifth TPC Sawgrass is seventh
and then Hilton Head Harbortown is 15th
really really difficult golf courses
this is Tiger Woods in his prime stuff
where he would go out and play the
toughest courses and really just blow
away the fields and now you factor in
the idea that he’s also playing against
the deepest Fields you have two
Signature Events in that mix a major and
a fifth major whatever it is you want to
call the players championship this is an
impressive run by any measure and it’s
because of those things he’s finding
ways to do it when other players are
struggling yeah and what a buzz he’s
creating as well in the men’s game golf
fans they are just soaking up the
history that he’s making they’ve been
asking to see this kind of dominance for
a while Rex in your opinion you know
you’ve covered this game for a while now
how much further do you think he can
take
this well it’s funny we were talking
about it this morning Ryan lavner and
myself on the podcast and it statistical
anomaly and I’m sure it’s going to end
very very soon that he has never won
outside of the spring on the PGA tour
and I say that I say he’s going to win
just based on the idea that you look at
what he did last year after winning the
Players Championship and the 14 starts
he had after that during the hard of the
summer on the PGA tour he finished
outside the top 10 just three times
didn’t miss any Cuts so he was giving
himself a lot of opportunities just
wasn’t getting those putts to drop
wasn’t getting maybe the breaks that he
had gotten before that and you look
forward to he has in store for him the
rest of the year we have three more
Signature Events and he has done a lot
of damage and those Signature Events
against again the toughest fields we
have three major championships and I
immediately looked to next month’s PGA
Championship at Valhalla he’s clearly
going to be the favorite going into that
major probably going to be the same
thing at the Open Championship at Royal
TR but the one I’m looking forward to
the most is the US Open at pineh Herz
the number two course the classic course
that is I think it’s going to be a
perfect fit for his brand of golf his
historic ball striking is going to match
up for that golf course and I think
that’s the one I’m probably looking
forward to the most because you start
getting into the heart of the season
when he is going to be at his best and
he just mentions he’s got a lot going on
in his life right now with the the
newborn child on its way but man I can’t
wait to get to Pinehurst yeah you’re so
right and is that a sneaky little H
podcast plug that I just uh you get in
there Rex alongside alongside lab we
have to just talk a little bit about
historic comparisons because anytime a
player goes on a run like this of course
at the word Tiger Woods comes into play
as well are we right to start comparing
Scotty to the kind of dominance that
Tiger Woods has shown over the
years no we’re not and I’m so reluctant
to do this and I wrote it last week even
before he won Hilton Head so I’m guilty
of being angry at myself for going to
the cliche in this particular case which
is comparing anyone to Tiger Woods which
is historically inaccurate I think Tiger
Woods was such a generational player and
he said did such generational things I
think it’s always an unfair comparison
but when I started to talk to players
last week in Hilton had just about the
idea that does it have sort of the same
feeling around it when Scotty gets in
the lead on a Sunday that Tiger Woods
does first off it was kind of hard to
find players in last week’s field that
had played against tiger in his prime
we’re talking about web Simpson Lucas
clever was in that mix I spoke with
Justin Rose uh Brian Haron was in the
mix and they all agreed that yes it
feels tiger esque and he is Tiger really
is the only comparison on this front
because of what Scotty has done to win
four out of the last five events to do
it as we talked about on the venues that
he did it and the way he’s doing it if
you go back to Sunday at the Masters he
starts the day with the lead and shoots
the round of the day no one else even
came close in that particular case he
did the same thing at the Arnold Palmer
Invitational goes in very very close to
the lead shoots the round of the day and
really walks away from the field even in
the final round and at Harbortown he
didn’t shoot the round of the day with a
68 going into that Monday finish but it
was the round of up the top five and so
he puts himself in this position and he
doesn’t back down and that’s really what
Tiger Woods did at his best Now Tiger
Woods did it for a generation and up
until now Scotty Sheffer has done it for
two years he’s still has a long way to
go to catch up with Tiger Woods but he
is the only comparison right now yeah
what we’re saying it is Excellence but
it is not Tiger Woods Excellence quite
yet there’s still a long way to go
before that but what he is doing
alongside Nelly CER in the women’s game
it is such a great time uh for
profession for professional gol Rex
thank you as always for your time

  1. David Duval blistered golf when he came on tour. Made it to world #1 quickly right before Tiger's 281 weeks of consecutive weeks and 683 weeks lifetime as world #1. Wicked good stats, but David's 33 starts before claiming top spot will likely not be ever beaten either.
