Hey guys! I’ve been getting a ton of questions about my favourite drills, so I figured I’d put together this video to share my top three with you. These drills were game-changers for me on the road to going pro.
These drills are by no means ‘quick fix’ drills but i’m confident they’ll help step up your golf game too. The reason I know they will help you is that they are not specific to my game, but applicable to every golfer as they will improve ball striking, direction and also help you if you are making any swing changes within your game.
Really hope you enjoy and drop me a comment below the video id love to hear your thoughts

03:13 Dead Straight Shots
06:24 How To Make Swing Changes
video I’m going to share with you three
drills that really helped my game over
the years I didn’t take up the game
seriously till was probably 12 or maybe
even 13 and by the time I was 18 I was
in a position where I could turn pro the
first one I’m going to share with you
today is really going to work on your
boss ranking the second one I think is
really going to surprise you and then
the final one is going to help you if
you’re making any swing changes if
you’re trying to develop your swing it
really helped me and Tiger Woods very
famously did this drill throughout his
career so we’re going to cover that as
well this first drill
is brilliant it’s one of my most
favorite drills if there’s one drill
that you could do for the rest of your
life to help your game this will be it
I’ve adapted this slightly I used to do
this on a driving range from a mat and a
little bit later I’ll show you how you
can set it up there but if you can do it
off grass it’s actually far more
beneficial you’re going to need a couple
of things you’re going to need two
alignment sticks two clubs would do and
you’re going to need some sort of spray
this is just athletes foot spray but
spray powder would be absolutely ideal
so what you’re going to do you’re going
to take these alignment sticks and place
them on the ground and just have a
really small gap between them and
basically just spray between the
alignment sticks when you move those out
the way you will have a white line
you’re going to take some golf balls and
you’re just going to place them Target
side of that line I pretty simply cannot
hit a good shot if my club doesn’t make
contact with the ground once I’ve hit
these four shots I will see very clearly
where my club made Conta with the ground
was it on the line before the line or
after the line and what we’re really
looking for is the diot or the contact
with the ground to start pretty much
where the line is and then it should
continue this side now the reason I like
this drill is because it’s a task drill
right we’ve got a setup here we’ve got
something we’re trying to achieve and
you’re hitting shots trying to work
towards that task so there isn’t many
swing thoughts here I don’t really want
you to be thinking about maybe you’ve
got to get 80% of your weight to your
lead side or trying to shift your hits
by 6 in or so we’re not trying to think
of technical stuff we’re trying to
create a situation have a task in mind
which is land the club with the right
place and go ahead and do it and very
simply if you do this on your practice
sessions over time you’ll get a lot
better at it and then guess what when
you go on the course your ball striking
is so much better so have a look at that
look at where the div was the divot was
actually a little bit too late which
means that I actually slightly caught
that off the bottom of the club now
that’s probably the lesser of the two
evils I’d rather have that than a divot
that starts way too early but I’ve got
some
feedback again on the golf course that
wouldn’t be a terrible shot was going to
cost me four or five yards it was a
little bit thin that was a much better
strike much better strike the key thing
here is you should be able to hit shot
and nothing should be this side of the
line this would actually be a really
good pattern good strikes slightly thin
is absolutely fine we really want to
avoid anything that’s behind the line so
let me quickly go show you how you can
set this up inside of the drive range
which is actually how I used to do it as
a junior so if you can only practice
from a drive range and that’s going to
be the case for any of you you can do
similar sort of setup you can see I’ve
got the four golf balls here I’ve got my
towel and I’m just going to place my
towel just
behind those golf balls so same sort of
thing if I land look in the right place
I’m going to get that feedback where the
towel doesn’t move if I’m a little bit
shallow I’m going to make contact with a
towel so if you can use one of those two
setups massively can help this drill
really straightened out my shots and
they can do it for you whether you also
want to hit it more to the left or more
to the right I’ve just hit a drive on
the 17th hole got my full swing kit down
here getting the data and this drive as
you can see really not good Big Slice
missed it on the right look at where my
club face was pointing relative to the
Target at impact zero so my club face
was perfectly straight at the target at
the point of contact so why did that
ball slice why did it Miss the Fairway
on the right it was because my club path
was out to win so you can have your Club
face pointing exactly at your target
whether it’s the middle of the Fairway
the flag whatever you’re aiming at but
if your path is out to Wi or into out
your ball is going to s serve swerve
severely offline causing all sorts of
trouble that was the case of my goling
my path was always way in out how do I
fix that well you’re going to need two
things you’re going to need a reference
point on the floor which would be to
your target I’ve got an alignment stick
you can equally use a golf club and then
you need something which is pretty soft
head cover towel even a water bottle
this is my filthy towel for my golf bag
so here’s what I’m going to do I’m going
to take my golf club I’m going to place
it behind the golf ball this is how I
set it up for my swing and then I’m
going to place this towel right inside
my setup and the club so as I move the
club away look how much Gap I’ve got
only probably an inch maybe between my
club and the towel now if I just show
you how you’d set it up for the kind of
slice or more out to win you’d pop it in
here okay so it’s the same setup but
it’s now outside the toe of the club my
tendency would always be inside a cross
the line drop it under and then swing
through and you can see how that would
cause me to collide with whatever is
down here in this case it’s the towel so
I would hit shots religiously like this
and at least 50% of the time I’d be
using a head cover and I’d have to walk
to get the head cover because it would
be going spinning down the Fairway but
over time I started to get good at this
so what was I trying to do well
ultimately I was basically trying to get
my club shaft at delivery
so that it was slightly angled in this
position so you can see relative to that
alignment stick on the floor it’s
slightly different what that did is
helped me deliver my club into the ball
with a more neutral path so my
rehearsals would be up to the top can I
achieve this position here which would
allow me to miss the head cover now if
you all that slicer which is probably
going to be more
common you’d be doing the opposite your
club would already be this way and you’d
be colliding with that headover so you’d
be working so that the golf club was a
little bit more angled like this you can
see that’s slightly different that will
give you a more neutral or a more inside
approach to the golf ball but again the
head cover or the towel or the bottle is
there for
feedback so number three look we all
know how hard it is to actually change
your gol sync but this helped me and
tiger famously did this drill back with
Butch Harman he almost said it was his
drill that made the biggest difference
hated doing it and Butch really made him
do it what is the drill well it’s very
simply a pause drill so
historically well I say historically I
still do struggle I always struggled
with a club going way inside in the
backwing like a long way inside and I
had it across the line at the top a lot
now not you’re thinking if you’ve
watched any of my videos you’re thinking
Chris you still do that and I do it was
far worse sort of back when I was a
junior and what I found is that even
though I knew what to do
just trying to do that and hitting shots
just didn’t give me the results I wanted
I was always making that sort of inside
and across the line back swing so if I
pause at the top what it does it allows
me to purely focus on what I’m trying to
do which for me is keeping the club a
little bit outside my hands at this
point here and then feeling like I lay
the club off at the top and because I
know I’m going to pause I can only focus
on that so what I would do is I would
take a setup and I would think to myself
right what am I trying to do in my back
swing I’m trying to make this sort of
movement here and
pause and because I’m going to pause it
also then gives me the opportunity to
really feel what that’s like ask myself
the question of okay how’s that
different to what I normally do is it
different than my right arm my left arm
and what you can do is you can start to
create your own feels from this which is
brilliant because you can take those to
the course so let me show you how I
would do this drill I’ve got the ball
teed up and this is a drill I wouldn’t
play golf this way but I would be taking
a setup and I would be purely focusing
on what am I trying to do in my go thing
what am I trying to change and let’s
just focus on that hands out size or
Club outside laid off at the top there’s
the
feel and then just go through now that
ball went left it was a pretty good
strike but it went a little left and you
know bear in mind at this point you’re
not trying to get perfect shots you’re
just trying to make a swing change and
what’s really interesting there if you
notice that pause it was significant
right it wasn’t a millisecond it was a a
fairly decent pause and that’s the idea
so when you’re making your swing changes
try this it’s so good I use this all the
time my students it’s one of the steps
that I use to ultimately get your swing
from where it currently is to where you
want it to
be and then go
through a little left but not too bad
and once I’ve done a few of those once
I’ve created the fields that I want and
I’ve got the right movements that I want
I can start to remove that pause and
scale that back up to full speed but I I
love that so any swing changes you’re
making use the portal drill it’s really
going to help

What does it mean when I dont take any divot? my bad shot is also a thin.
Thanks for the tip as always!
Well done Chris 👏 😊
Thanks Chris, another good video lesson. One question, during the pause drill, the ball went off to the left both times and I get that you’re looking for the concept but how do you feed off the improvement in the concept, when doing the drill if the ball doesn’t go where you want it to?
The third drill is the Mother of all Drills!
Thanks …
Brilliant video, highly motivating, great 👏!
Good shit Chris
Excellent video Chris. I will commit to these three drills every week! My coach uses a big stick of chalk on the mat at the range. I know I’m pretty well on target when I remove the chalk line. Keep up the great work!
Great video Chris love the simple drills so well explained 😊
Great video. FYI minor typo in text on last drill *speed/spped
Chris you helping me become a better player. Much appreciated.
Your second point regarding slicing a driver with a face impacting square to target was mind blowing for me and it's crazy that other videos don't point this out (everyone always blames slicing on OTT or opening the face at impact). I have been struggling so much figuring out why I am slicing my driver without being OTT and on video recapture I am hitting my driver mostly square but still slicing. This might be the answer I have been searching for. Definitely going to try drill 2 next time I am out.
