time now for a golf today round table as
we welcome in golfdigest.com contributor
Shane Ryan and Global Golf post Ron
green Jr okay jent I want to start with
a comparison here he listen to this
Patrick
Klay eight PGA Tour wins and 167 starts
all right he had six wins from October
of 2020 to August of 2022 he’s at zero
wins since then best finish in a major
tied for third at the 2019 PGA
Championship he eventually lost by six
to Brooks Kea then Xander Schley seven
PGA Tour wins and 167 starts he turned
Pro in
2015 he did however win the gold medal
at the last Olympics Games his best
performance uh in a major where he
finished second a couple of times Shane
here’s I want to start with you if I can
when we’re talking about Patrick Klay
when we’re talking about Xander Shaw
is it reasonable to say that our
expectation level of what these two
players would have accomplished to this
point in their career has not yet been
met yeah I think that’s a really nice
way to put it I think it’s entirely
reasonable to say that let me put it
mathematically if you could develop a
formula uh which I think Mark Brody
probably has where you could say based
on how many PGA Tour events You’ve Won
based on you know your quality of
Strokes gained and all that how many
majors are you expected to win I think
with and shafley you would both say it’s
at least above one major right so they
have underperformed in major shafley has
had a number of top 10 finishes he’s
been good at Majors K Le’s uh resume is
a little more disperate between the PGA
Tour and Majors where he has seriously
struggled uh to put up any really good
finishes yet in Majors uh but again it
only takes one to change it and it’s a
very very small sample size Majors right
Justin Rose uh has won a major Adam
Scott’s only won one major Sergio Garcia
only won one major it’s not easy um and
so yeah I think I think what you said
was very fair and I think also at the
same time you know they they’ve got time
you know we can give them a little bit
of lenience and uh I think one day
they’ll probably both win at least
one I think when you look at those
numbers and how they come how similar
they are no wonder they’re best friends
I mean everything seems to fit together
with them how they play and uh you know
what they when they go on vacation and
all that I agree you would have thought
they would have done more in Majors I
mean what is it between them 15 uh tour
victories but you know I just pushing it
through that last line you you sort of
expect I was Friday night I would have
thought surot Patrick County was going
to win at Genesis but you go back and
look at his final round scoring average
this year I think he’s 151st on tour in
scoring average in the final round and
uh I mean that’s the wrong way I think
first may be in first round scoring
average I just think there’s just that
that edge there I mean I go back to last
year at Wells Fargo I thought sure
Xander shley is going to go finish it
off and do what you do to win
tournaments suddenly wiam Clark’s a guy
who does it and uh I don’t know it’s
just I I feel sure they’re going to be
there in major championships I mean you
can count on Xander shley being in the
top 10 in the US Open and I think one of
these days it’s going to fall for fall
right for him the somebody else maybe
helps him maybe you know the putt that
hadn’t gone in the last two or three
years goes in this time uh they’re so
good and so steady I still expect it to
happen
given how flat they both played while
paired together yesterday you could also
make an argument I suppose that it might
be better to play with guys that you
have a bit of an edge with rather than a
guy who’s a friend out there tiger never
had a problem playing with anyone
because there was always an edge and he
always wanted to beat them Ron you’ve
been watching the tiger decline as long
as any of us at this point it it just
seems to be an endless series of
disappointments now are we are we
kidding ourselves that there’s another
chapter to be written that is in inside
the ropes versus what he’s actually
doing in terms of taking on a role
outside the
ropes I guess I’m guilty of being one of
those hopeless Romantics who hopes
there’s something there uh I mean the
reality is he’s 48 years old now and all
that he’s been through I think what I
was reminded of at Rivier is just how
precious these moments are that he can
still go out there and we can still at
least think he’s going to be competitive
and maybe will be later this year but
you know this was never going to last
forever and there was a time truth years
ago we thought we wouldn’t see him at
all anymore so uh it’s disappointing
when he can’t finish and doesn’t uh you
know has a week like what happened at
Rivier because there were a lot of good
things he had a lot of good shots I
walked with him watched a lot he seemed
to have that pep that energy and we’ve
gotten to the point where we didn’t have
to think so much about his physical
condition and could he play golf it was
just how he was going to play golf and
then suddenly we get the abrupt ending
Friday um I’m not ready to say never yet
uh but I know there aren’t gonna be many
more
opportunities I’m also not ready to say
never uh but in my case it’s because in
2015 I wrote a piece for Golf Digest
called Tiger Woods is totally
unequivocally and you know permanently
done uh and that was of course three
years before he went on and one another
major and aan you’re on Twitter you know
how people react on Twitter when you’re
a little bit wrong when you’re
incredibly wrong like I was uh probably
the uh the social media low light of my
entire life so now I’m very cautious
about not being optimistic you know it’s
from my own personal preservation that I
say you can never rule Tiger Woods out
but uh in my more honest you know
contemplative moments it does seem just
like you said like we have a series of
kind of diminishing returns and it gets
worse all the time take him at his word
that this time it was just flu you know
that’s not that’s not father time right
that’s just bad luck that’s a virus uh
that anybody could get so let’s play a
little bit of wait and see but it’s hard
to be too too optim istic uh unless
you’re like me and you’re protecting
yourself from the worst people of the
internet all right Jones I want to ask
you about Jordan Speed getting a DQ for
signing an incorrect scorecard and Ron
if I can start with you on this one I
guess the simple question that I have is
did the punishment fit the crime in
2024 well I mean I think that’s the rule
I mean he broke the rule that comes with
a disqualification I know there’s talk
about should we changed that rule uh I
mean is it really that hard to get 18
numbers right and you’ve got people
helping you I I I think we stick with it
I think we stay with uh the rule as it
is you know we’ve had all this talk
about bifurcating the game I mean if we
do it in say a city Championship I do
what he did would be dced we don’t have
somebody there keeping our cards so I
I’m not ready to change and say it’s a
two- shot penalty I get the whole
argument that wellit well you want to
have Jordan Speak there for the weekend
uh uh you know we all know what he did
he wasn’t trying to subvert the system
but uh that’s my traditionalist I’ll go
use all the new equipment try all the
new gadgets and everything but I I would
stick with this
rule okay with all due respect to Mr
Green who I I think is one of the best
in our business this to me is
fundamentally and totally absurd you
have shotlink out there which not only
for Jordan spe but for every single
player in the field tracks every single
shot they make as Ron said you cannot
cheat the system right the minute Jordan
spe got a number wrong he knew that a
second later he was going to be
disqualified because somebody’s going to
say actually you got a four on that hole
you didn’t get a three so with the fact
that we track all this already and the
fact that you can’t cheat it what is the
purpose of signing your scorecard on the
PGA tour completely get it at lower
levels obviously but on the PGA tour
it’s crazy all it does in this case is
hurt Jordan spe for the PGA Tour it
takes like a dynamite player away from
the weekend so it hurts them the only
person that really helps is the one guy
whoever it was who made the cut that
wasn’t going to otherwise and I know
like I’m saying the same thing that uh a
lot of people are saying but I’ll
squeeze the last bit of toothpaste out
of the tube here and say that Common
Sense dictates in 2024 we can’t punish a
guy like this it is it is absurd it
makes me mad even though I’m laughing
inside I’m steaming and and I think
Jordan Speed didn’t deserve it and come
on let’s come into the modern era we
don’t need this anymore stop stop the
crybaby stuff here Shane literally it’s
the only thing these guys have to do is
to accurately attest to their score and
we know from week in and week out that
shotlink is not always entirely accurate
either surely these guys can do basic
math and be accountable for that but why
Amon it’s ignoring the question of why
imagine that you play an NBA game Steph
Curry wins on a buzzer beater for the
Golden State Warriors and they say well
before it’s official Steph what was your
shooting percentage today from the
three-point line and if you get it wrong
by the way your team loses the game it
is getting into absurd shooting
percentage doesn’t declare whether it’s
irrelevant to the actual final score of
the game I think Jordan spe and every
golfer on the tour has to attest to
their own
score I I think we’re getting we’re
getting lost in the weeds here be done
with it common sense let Common Sense
rule just give everybody the golf Genius
app and let them keep their scores on
their phones like we do at our clubs
everywhere
else oh boy it never ends with these
guys thanks for joining us guys enjoyed
the conversation we’ll do it again
someday thanks have a good
one

  1. The 2 old white men on this panel think signing a correct scorecard is way more important than having a top 10 player in the world playing on the weekend. These dinosaurs need to realize that the sport they are paid to talk about is bleeding to death. If Tiger died in that car crash in 2021 would they still have jobs? All the Golf Channel has covered the last 4 months has been Tiger.

  2. I signed an incorrect score card after winning the first flight of the Mackenzie qualifier @ Pasatiempo in 2005. I had cancer at the time, and was in a deep mental funk but somehow played well enough to win my flight by 2 strokes. Sadly, there was a scoring error that I did not notice. The assistant pro brought it to my attention in the men's lounge after I had already signed the card. It was Sunday, and the head pro Ken Woods was not working but they called him down to make the call, and I was DQ'd. It was a devastating penalty given my state of mind but those were the rules of golf. The Mackenzie Cup was held in England that year, but I was not there.

  3. PGA tour is a snooze fest without tiger. Everyone has known that for 30 years. They did nothing but act like liberal elites. LIV is the answer.

  4. There are only 4 Majors, and a ton more players now than before. If you go by boxing the boxing matrix; no doubt Ali was the greatest…he beat them ALL, but then after Tyson especially, they started making their own rules and keeping the best away from the best to claim 'their' best…wbc, wba, lineal, wbo…. Same thing might be happening with golf…PGA, LIV etc.. I think LIV, if it keeps going, will make their own 'Majors'….like the Australian Open being a Major etc..

  5. How many professional sports don’t have score keepers??? I think they should electronically keep the scores for them and they can sign the card when they finish… electronically.

  6. All the grey hairs trying to tow the line, hold tradition, and speak precedent… it’s ridiculous. No pro sport has their athletes keep score.

  7. There is absolutely too much money involved, these top tour players are NOT hungry, there is no sense of urgency to win a MAJOR if you win a couple tournaments a year! The PGA is SOFT!

  8. Why exactly would a professional golfer write down the wrong number on his score card? For what reason did this happen. Was he confused? This is his profession. The entire conversation is ridiculous. It’s more of the dumbing down of America and not taking personal responsibility.

  9. agree with Matt and Rex. who benefited from Jordan's DQ? antiquated rules are bad for golf. fix them.

  10. This is absurd. There’s a digital scorecard. We see most shots. There’s cameras everywhere. Just correct the score man. The guy knows every shot is seen and recorded and mostly televised. Like come on… this guy just made a mistake

  11. Sorry….if it was Patrick Reid who signed an incorrect scorecard would the the discussion be a question of fairness?

  12. Tiger is not thru playing by a longshot. He's 48. At 50 years old he'll be possibly be playing on the Champions Tour in 2026. I expect him to win a US Senior Open and become the all time USGA Championships winner with 10: 3 USGA Juniors, 3 US Amateurs, 3 US Opens. Like his longtime idol, Jack Nicholas who won 2 US Seniors at age 51 and 53, Tiger will participate in the Champions Tour to play in the US Senior Open. 3 rounds of golf is not as demanding as 4 rounds. And another record will fall.

The other major record is the most PGA wins. One more win on the PGA tour and Tiger has 83 wins.
