Nick Taylor: 2024 WM Phoenix Open win was ‘a lot of fun’ | Golf Channel

last year a runner up but this year a
winner in a playoff no less Nick you
were the winner of the WM Phoenix Open
what are the
emotions oh it was a long day I you know
to make the putts when I needed to um I
pride myself in a lot of that and you
know early on in that final round I was
hitting it everywhere and and just
battled and uh to finish like I did and
birdie theth hole twice this this hole
is giving me trouble in the past and to
step up and hit great shots uh was
amazing it’s it’s a lot of fun to be in
these moments and um today was no
different walk us through this playoff
with Charlie Hoffman the two playoff
holes yeah I know Charlie had a great
Drive the first hole and obviously I
needed to to hit a good one and you know
to make the Putt and him make it on top
of me obviously you know it just felt
like birdie needed to be made to win and
a little opening when he hit it left so
i’ I played a little safe right but
again got a good break that hopped out
of the bunker and hit a good shot and
another great pot I was seeing the line
so well all week you’ve had so much
support here from the Canadians in the
crowd from the Canadians on the the PJ
tour and your family is here as well how
much has that meant to you it’s the best
you know this is this is our home for
the last 10 years um and it’s uh to have
family here my in-laws are here all our
friends it’s uh it’s incredible and
finally last year you were the runner up
this year it’s a completely different
story how much of a different man and
player are you now with this one yeah
she told me after last year’s second if
I had two wins in the in the next year
uh I don’t know if I would have believed
you but um you know everyone on my team
they they’ve helped so much it’s it’s
been amazing so I can’t than everyone
you know they know who they are there’s
there’s this golf is a team sport and I
could have done without him oh believe
it congratulations thank you
thanks so how do you get it done look if
you were just watched him hit his t-
shots and that’s all you saw today you
thought there’s just no way this is your
winner at all that’s his first t-shot in
the final round you know and sort of a
weak fade out there to the right you
know looked like he was guiding it sort
of steer and we had we saw this kind of
throughout the round didn’t we paig we
saw throughout the round we saw it
throughout the week his second round was
very similar to these early drives in
this round and he mentioned afterwards
he did feel steer after the second one
and everything was a right Miss he had a
couple poles thrown in there as well
inclusive of this and then at the third
hole he hit it to the right had to take
an unplayable and still made Power so
after hitting all those shots to the
right with ob to the right at five it’s
understandable he’d hit a low pull hook
over the thing is is that he pared one
he par two he pared three he parred five
and we get up on 11 which is a beast of
a whole page you talked about how
intimidating this shot is all week look
at that shot you can tell by the Finish
there’s just he’s late getting into it
with the upper body and left so many out
to the right and great break and guess
what makes par so he’s getting away with
all these then gets up on the 18th hole
where he’s had trouble finding the
Fairway he only found it once in the
three previous rounds
similarly the bail on this is to the
right but no one get and what a break
skips through the bunker ends up in a
pretty good lie it’s still though you
know he he hit a phenomenal shot but
here he is the second playoff hole
having birdied it first go around after
finding the
[Applause]
Fairway right all over the place this is
not the guy that wins the golf
tournament is it so how in the world did
this guy win this golf tournament paig
it was about the recovery shot go back
to the first round excuse the second
round this is the 18th hole after
hitting it in that bunker that he had
previously skipped out of that we just
saw that’s the recovery shot to save par
oh wait wait wait wait we can do this
again to show it’s not luck in the third
round same thing drives it in the right
bunker then hits this incredible
wedge I mean he could do this all day he
can do this all week here he is on the
second hole in the final round look how
high this got and soft out of the rough
drove it in the right bunker had no
chance of getting it there looked like
he was going to make Bogey and
miraculously makes
par talked about the great save that he
made at the third that was for par then
at the sixth did find the Fairway to a
front left pin another wedge and you
think about this from 75 to 100 yards on
the year and he’s played Fair number of
tournaments this year he’s averaged 21
ft but every time we looked up he was
hitting at 2 ft 3T 4 ft he did lay up
right here at the 15th a very
controversial decision but when you’re
hitting wedges like this I guess you say
give me my number give me my wedge back
up let me go to work and this one did
back up quite a bit yes proximity
numbers to this week between 50 and 125
yards 11 ft just slightly inside that on
this final
[Applause]
hole and that got him into the playoff
after another phenomenal wedge from the
right
rough so if you see the t- shots you
think no way he could win you see those
wet shots and you think well no way he
wouldn’t win by 10 shots take a look at
the background told you there a lot of
Canadians in the crowd there it is Oh
Canada

  1. This is way better than any liv tournament could produce. PGA do not give in to these greedy players that left just for money. The love of the game and history means way more!!
