Jordan Spieth’s swing changes may account for worse results since 2015 | Golf Today | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1

been a while since we’ve seen Jordan SP
win a tournament you have to go back to
2022 the RBC Heritage first playoff
hole over Patrick kley beat two Eagles
in that final round he came from three
off the pace after 54 second straight
year he won on Easter Sunday having done
the same at the Bolero Texas open in
2021 so since then 33 starts two
runner-up finishes the 11 top
10s brandle has launch into professional
golf you know one of the most prolific
in history on par with what you
mentioned some of the young major
Champions with tiger and Jack and Rory
and sebie did in their early 20s um you
know we’re we’re a long ways from from
that Jordan Speed had us all waxing
poetic even the guy to my left probably
had to go to the thesaurus to come up
with
superlatives uh for Jordan spe uh you
know it had us comparing him to Tiger
Woods which is never fair but he was
doing things that were reminiscent of
Tiger Woods and one of the more baffling
things I think I’ve seen since I’ve been
sitting in this chair for 20 years is to
see the evolution or the changes to
Jordan speed’s golf swing from 2015
which was one of the great seasons in
the history of golf to 2023 now he
hasn’t shuffled off that competitive
coil where he’s no longer relevant but
if you look at this swing in 2015 the
thing I want you to noce is how the the
face of the club sort of opens up right
and at the top look where it’s hanging
right there just beautifully right it’s
dead on Parallel with his left arm now
look there’s shut faces that work for
some but this worked for him this was
the best he ever played one of the best
rounds best seasons ever and you look at
2023 and there’s a market difference you
know it takes a club back more outside
shut bod left wrist and shut face at the
top so in a sense he’s now sort of a
shut face Rotator where I wouldn’t have
called him that in 2015 shut face
rotator certainly work so let’s just
take a look at these two swings 2015 on
the left 2023 you can see the face and
2023 on the right much more shut than it
was in 2015 so let’s take him up to the
top and there you’re going to see the
more neutral position of the left hand
at the top on 2015 on the left with next
picture next picture to the top right
there there you see it you can’t do much
better than that this worked for him
okay look at that club face on the left
exactly parallel with his left arm this
is beautiful neutral position of his
left wrist that’s Nicholas likee okay
Nicholas flew the right arm a little bit
more but that’s that was perfect now you
compare that to the right picture where
the left wrist is bowed and it’s shut at
the top and on the way down the club’s
much more out you compare the positions
here you look generally speaking at
where his hands are more in his chest
right where that right elbow is much
more out uh and and as a result look
he’s more rotating now he hits he’s got
more speed little bit more speed I
suspect this was done in an effort to
pick up speed you know speed certainly
didn’t hold him back or the lack of it
in 2015 there you see more of his left
pocket on the right okay than you do in
2015 a little bit more extended than he
was in 2015 now he’s more of a rotator
got more right side Bend uh you know
when you look at the swing you think
okay it kind of looks the same but it’s
not those little bitty differences have
changed his DNA uh he was first in
Strokes gain total in 2015 he was riding
that bullet train to one of the best
players of all all time now he’s still
still a good player but just nowhere
near he’s not even in the same league of
the player he was in 2015 and it all
boils down at least in my view to the
changes those changes that he’s made to
his golf swing it’s going to be
interesting year for him since he just
replaced Rory macroy on the PGA tourist
policy board as well and there’s reasons
more than just time consumption that
Rory mroy got out of the way now because
things are about to start getting
fractures decisions are going to be made
that are going to get borderline nasty
reactions among memberships of the PGA
Tour the closer you are to that
decision-making process the harder it’s
going to be to separate that from your
day-to-day existence on the PGA tour I
think all of the policy board members
are going to find that it’s going to be
curious to see how to what extent that
impacts Jordan spee this year as well
good point Jordan have a strong voice we
don’t hear a lot from Jordan publicly
with the media in the way we have with
Rory mooy or some other players but
behind the scenes is certainly the
people I’ve talked to wouldn’t suggest
Jordan spe is a Wallflower in those
boardroom meetings even at this early
stage and he has an alliance we know
through the years with AT&T as a sponsor
that has its own uh intricacies with
Randall Stevenson former board member on
the PGA tour who broke away it was and
Randall Stevenson was previously
attached to some degree to the
alternative private Equity uh bid which
was not successful in this process as
well there’s there’s been no suggestion
of anything unto in terms of conflicts
of interest along the way in that but
there are a lot of competing alliances
and agendas at every level of this game
Jordan’s been around long enough to have
built up his own friendships alliances
and agendas as all the other players on
that board
have

  1. Something about the tempo of the new swing just looks unnatural for him. Almost like he's fighting his natural rhythm in the backswing.

  2. Jordan needs to give up that over-the-top swing he had in 2021' at the Texas Valero Open, where he pushed everything to the left.

  3. It’s sad that Tiger will never beat Jacks majors record. Even more sad that nobody will get close to Tiger’s major wins. Gone is the era of the greats with 6 7 8 and 9 majors

  4. It looks a little like Spieth is getting the club pretty laid off at the top of his backswing. The compensations he would have to do to recover from that could be producing a 2-way miss.

  5. Jordan's swing is fine. He needs to ditch the mechanical pre-swing routine though because he never looks back at the target after looking in the opposite direction of the target back towards his club head which he appears to be trying to tell if it stays outside of his hands on the backswing. Watch the difference between Jordan's pre-swing routine with his putter vs. his other clubs. When doing his pre-swing putting routine, Jordan looks at the target, then back to the ball, then back to the target, then back to the ball, several times before making his putting stroke. That is exactly what he should be doing with every club in the bag.

  6. Bc should write another book about the golf swing I’m sure it would sell at least 200 copies and be free online somewhere
How bout the ground breaking futuristic golf movement of tathata
His innovations will be dissected for generations

  7. I don't know if i could fault Jordan for chasing distance — PGAT stats show from 2014 to 2022 an almost 10-yard increase in the average driver distance on tour. Besides, the biggest thing that made Jordan was his ridiculous ability to hole putts inside of 10'-15'. I don't see how anyone in their right mind would think he would keep that up for any amount of time – i think maybe he realized the hot putter wouldn't continue (which is smart), so he tried to bridge the distance gap.

What i think is overlooked is how many new arrivals on the tour since then are playing so well, especially with driver. Heck, Rory McIlroy himself got worked up just because Bryson Dechambeau managed to top him in driver distance. Screwed him up for a year chasing distance, and there was no reason for him to do so.

Every new kid on the tour today knew 5 years before they got here that distance was king, and they've concentrated on that with incredible launch monitor technology and top-notch coaching at a young age. That's why you don't see guys like Zach Johnson or Webb Simpson winning tournaments like they were – if you don't have the distance, you're climbing out of a hole right off the bat. Golf used to have guys that could work their way around a course and win tournaments, but that's getting rarer and rarer.

  8. This swing analysis is total crap, time filing, nonsense. In 2015 Jordan Spieth was #1 in putting average of 1.699 strokes per hole and #1 in one putt percentage at 44.26%
In 2023 Jordan Spieth was 56th in avg at 1.742 strokes per hole and 79th in total putting. That's it! That's why he isn't as good now.

  9. You cannot just be good to win. You must put together 3-4 phenomenal rounds (B Harmon, Cam Smith). Four rounds of 68 for -16 is going to get you a T5.
Spieth's problem is the same as Day's, Morikawa's and Scauffele's problems. Not enough winner checks to go around.

  10. Jordan and Tiger both need new swing coaches! Jordan needs to get rid of Cameron McCormick. And Tiger needs to go back to his old coach, Butch Harmon.

  11. These tour players turns you from winning majors to struggling to win is only an inch or two. Before he won his two majors, I said that he should keep his at the top position the same for the next 30 years. As for putting, not only you have to make the often rare 25-30 foot putt but it is the ones closest to the flag that you have to convert for birdie at least 40 percent of the time.

  12. I watched all three rounds with Jordan Spieth and his swing is dead on plane like the 2015 swing. Not sure what Brandel is looking at.

  13. i find it hard to watch him go through a 'drill' before every swing…hopefully he transitions away from that as he settles in to the season
