guys what are your impressions in this
29y old Southern California rookie today
what a day Todd and Jake’s late
grandfather Gordon Bly be very proud of
his grandson and how he played golf
today Johnson you were out there today
including with that seven under 28 a
record here at Vidant what did you see
from this 29-year-old pj2 a rookie
remarkable control and for as much speed
as he has with the driver it’s amazing
how straight he hits it he’s carrying
this little two-wood sort of mini driver
that he hits a little Stinger sort of
bunt shot he hit it right onto the front
the seventh green hit it off a six and I
just couldn’t believe how much command
he had he was putting the ball exactly
where it he needed to until the 10th
hole that H was up bogey save on 10
considering he hit it into the penalty
area yeah it was it was remarkable he it
was kind of hanging off on the edge over
there and now the one thing Damon that I
noticed in his game that was not spot on
was his chipping off of these past palum
Fairways this is the first time I saw
him pitch something in two days just
didn’t seem to quite have the command of
the leading edge here on 12 he got the
one up and down on 10 for bogy here on
12 catches it a little clean runs it by
the hole good 8 n ft but he went on to
make that as well and we’re going to get
to see some even worse ones here on 14
the par five where he was out of
position off the te hit a good layup a
really poor wedge from 69 yards and then
this one and for Jake knap to bogy a par
five that is certainly giving away a lot
of Strokes I keep hearing about how nice
it is to chip off of these surfaces that
it sits up on this pass palum are you
saying there are some trouble spots
there there definitely are and you can
see the divot interaction most of these
were on slide up slopes and and PAs
palum is just like Bermuda it’s got a
lot of grain in it so when you’re on a
slide up slope if you don’t use the
bounce if you let the Leading Edge dig
you’re going to make a a fool out of
yourself he never made a fool out of
himself but as impressive as his golf
game was all around with the start he
was a foot away on one and two or not a
foot he was three feet away on those but
that’s the one thing I bet he’s going to
go after he works out before I bet he’s
going to go over to that chipping green
get on an up slope and that pass pal and
just make sure he gets that contact
right cuz certainly you’d have to think
he’ll be chipping some tomorrow no doubt
in the US Brun was playing alongside
Alvaro Ortiz from Mexico from
guadalahara about a three-hour Drive
Away seemed to be a little bit
overwhelmed on this third round Saturday
well he got off to a nice start hit a
couple really good shots into one and
two but once Jake kind of took off and
started making Jake took all the birdies
out of that group today and Alo the the
amount of pressure you think about the
Canadians playing the Canadian open
Taylor finally breaking that 69e winless
drought for Canadians the pressure that
he felt walking off the first te there
was five six seven people coming over
for hug so he had so much support and
sometimes when you want it that bad it’s
just hard to make it happen but he’s not
out of position a top 10 for him if he
can go out and shoot a good round
tomorrow a top 10 puts him in the
cognizant classic next week so what are
Jake Napp and Sally uh Sammy valaki
facing tomorrow in this final group
trying to win for the first time on the
PGA tour let’s not forget they’ve both
won on other tours Sam over on the Sammy
over on the DP World Tour and Jake
three-time winner in Canada I mean these
guys have a lot of experience and Jake
was just in this position at the farmers
just a few weeks ago so I think he’s
looking confident and he’s going to be
hard to beat if he drives it anything
like he did today Jake knap from UCLA
security guard Bouncer and perhaps a
victory tomorrow on the PGA tour at
vidan Todd yeah great stuff guys it
would be a fun watch I mentioned ninth
start of the PGA tour for D just the
11th start for balamaki as well so not a
lot of experience just playing out here
on the PGA tour but want to get back to
Jake knap and you know what he is doing
on the golf course in the mechanics of
his golf swing if you had to describe it
what would you say I love his Tempo and
you think of great Tempo you think of
Ernie Els you think of Fred Couples but
he’s able to control as Johnson said the
distance and and I would tell any great
player when you’re under pressure do you
have a fairway finder most long hitters
they just hit it and they swing at it
he’s got a little bit of a fairway
finder but we broke down as Goss wi kind
of looked at at it from behind and from
the face on and it’s some it’s some
pretty interesting positions he gets it
at that’s in full motion and and just so
smooth and rhythmic I mean powerful but
effortless now look how wide his arms
are right here and this is where he’s
going to start to kind of load this up
Club heads outside his hands a little
bit of knee Flex there when he was set
up his arms were a little bit of far but
look where his hands get at the top of
the golf swing up here and look where
the club head gets all the way past
parallel I’m not saying it’s John Daly
like but it pretty much is he loaded it
up from this position he’s in position
to really generate some power and looks
how he bends down squats down through
there look at the club head the end of
the the club is pointed just at the ball
and then right here as he comes down
he’s got a little bit of that late
release and releases it right here
extension through the shoulders there’s
not a lot of hip and turn and everything
there but he really by setting the club
as high as he does he generates that
speed and gets that wide takeaway it’s
just really impressive now here’s a
great look at it on the wide takeaway
look how his arms are away from his body
not a lot of turn on the on his right or
his hips yet but his right hip pocket
will eventually turn as he takes it back
here but look how high these hands get
and I want to really show you where it
is past parallel here but that is in a
great spot look how he’s twisted and
turtled he’s coiled up right here now
he’s just got to go ahead and release it
through and generate that power as he
comes down and through it right here but
watch how he comes down watch how he
lowers that lower body he’s going into
the ground look at the position he’s in
that left elbow is bent just a little
bit that club is out there in a late
release and it’s just an amazing
position to get it most long hitters
stay back and release it
through wonderful golf swing right there
and he that was 192 ball speed on that
he’s told Smiley Coffman I think he had
it at 198 he’s done squats at what what
I say 365 four different times you can
look at those arms and the veins poing
out he’s a workout guy and there’s a lot
of guys with power do it differently
they work out lot guys do it as he said
it’s his own swing he owns it and I
think that’s the key to it know I found
one quick note I find to be interesting
uh on the par 3es he’s six under on the
par fours he’s nine under on the par
fivs this week with all that power y he
is just uh four under with two bogeys
with two Bogies that’s surprising to me
is it to you oh absolutely because You’
think with his length that’s where he
would and we mentioned I kept talking
you got to play the part fighs you got
to take advantage of he hasn’t yet if he
did it’s a runaway uh tournament for
sure so I I think tomorrow for him if he
can get those par fives with that length
especially uh but he’s made some sloppy
shots on the second shots coming in
there but yeah that is extremely the
Bogies are what really surprises me uh
the most as he’s made two Bogies of his
four Bogies on par F yeah we’ll see how
he handles again what will be a little
bit of internal pressure tomorrow as he
tries to win on the PG tour for the
first
time
