at the Timeless age of 50 Stuart sinks
on the first page of the leaderboard
what have you done well both days here
on Hott Lulu to be on that first
page it’s probably the most boring part
of golf is what I’ve done well here I
haven’t been the best off the tea or the
most crisp with my approaches or puted
the best I haven’t done anything the
best but I’ve managed myself around this
course pretty well I have
learned sometimes the hard way and
sometimes not the hard way we not to be
here and there’s just a lot of places on
this course where you just you can’t
shorts side yourself and I’ve done a
good job of steering away from those
places like got a shot out of the rough
where the ball can kind of Squirt almost
anywhere and I’ve just managed those
shots well and not put myself in trouble
and done a pretty good job taking
advantage of uh the green light
opportunities too it sounds like
experience is very valuable here would
you agree with that yeah it is but
experience is also something that comes
pretty cheap these days because the the
players that come out even rookies they
just learn the courses so fast and the
data is available to uh you can just
almost Buy experience nowadays and and I
don’t I’m not saying that like it’s a
bad thing I use all that stuff too I use
all the things that are available to me
at my you know at my disposal stuff like
data and shot link and all that so um
it’s just that you don’t have to spend
25 years playing PJ tour or golf to have
experience anymore and um the guys come
out just so ready to rock and roll that
um that’s why the fields are so deep and
you see the cut lines are low and the
scoring averages and all that yeah
speaking of rock and roll you turned 50
uh last year you played Four events on
the PGA tour Champs three top 10 so you
you made an impact on that tour but
predominantly you played on the PGA tour
what are the competitive challenges if
you compare the PJ tour to the PJ tour
champions for you
um competitively speaking I think the
three rounds versus four rounds is a
pretty big deal because um if you look
at uh let’s say like you make a double
bogey on the PJ tour Champions that’s
that’s one out of 54 holes that you’ve
made a double bogey on on the PJ tour
it’s one out of 72 holes so it’s
neutralized a little bit by
volume PJ tour Champions is not and the
courses generally are set up a little
bit easier at least from what I’ve seen
that the the whole the courses are
playable very playable and so um a bad
score hurts you a little bit more just
because it’s uh you don’t have as much
time to recover from it so um that’s
operationally what I’ve seen is a little
different the players play really good
golf out there they don’t always uh you
know they don’t they don’t look like
necessarily everybody doesn’t look like
you know the some of the young guys out
here that swing for the fences and hit
the high ball speeds and all that stuff
but they just get the job done get
around and a lot of those guys have been
playing golf a lot longer than I have
out here and they’ve gained all that
experience too so I’m very impressed
with how old the numbers are out there
and uh but mainly just seeing all the
faces that are so familiar and actually
knowing people is such a great
feeling well Stuart turned 50 on May
first last year so he did play a few STS
but not enough to qualify as a full
rookie so this will mark his rookie
season on the senior tour and he will
make his debut excuse me uh next week
after the Sony Open at haai so back
toback weeks in Hawaii for Stewart sing
can you take a look at what he did do
last year in terms of the two different
tours there were just the four starts
compared to the 27 on the PGA tour but
he had better success you could say um
in the short time that he heed up on the
senior tour with those three top 10 four
top 25 finishes so when you think about
all of it and you know that you’re 50
and you’ve got the PGA Tour Champions
eligible to you Johnson explain to me
why you think he is continuing to focus
a bit more on the PGA tour for now well
if you just go back to the 2021 season
he won twice in that year which gave him
a three-year exemption so he’s still
fully exempt on the PGA tour and when
you look at where the tours headed these
last couple Seasons with purse sizes I
mean that alone playing for more more
money uh staying relevant with the young
players in the game because we look back
to Rome just a few months ago he was a
Vice Captain Stuart sinks played five
Ridder cups if it weren’t for Tiger
Woods and if Tiger Woods doesn’t want it
I would in my opinion I think Stuart
sink could possibly be the next rer Cup
captain so he’s got this year of exempt
status and you know you look down that
list of American potential captains
going forward steuart sinks right at the
top of my list interesting you mentioned
that because he was asked about this at
the PNC Championship just in December
and here’s what he had to say to the
media quote I do want to be the captain
and think I can be but with all due
respect to Tiger Woods I think it’s up
to him I haven’t been told anything and
no one has mentioned one thing to me but
I know I can do it and I know I would
love to do it especially after being an
assistant at the last Ridder cup that
and you know that’s typically the
formula we’ve seen certainly from the
Europeans that the Americans have
started to follow that you kind of get
brought up through the through the
captaincy ranks as as an assistant for
maybe a couple or two look I think he’s
right I think it is down to whether
Tiger Wood says yay or nay so if tiger
does turn it down for whatever reason
you think he’s the guy to go for I I do
I think he’s most relevant on the tour
with these young players I think they
respect the heck out of him because of
what he’s been able to do and going back
to that season just a couple years ago
where he won twice uh at finishing the
2020 season he was 111th in driving
distance rededicated himself in the gym
climbed all the way up he was driving
the ball 295 yards fast forward to 2021
he picked up 10 yards of distance at 48
years old so he’s hitting the ball and
he’s maintained that the last three
three seasons 306 yards off the T he’s
top 50 on the PGA tour in driving
distance that in a game that is driving
distance dominated right now Stuart sink
still has plenty of Firepower to be
relevant on the PGA tour yeah you make
such a valid point the PGA Tour
Champions will be there for him when
he’s ready just turning 50 doesn’t mean
you got to go now you know the purses
are big the relevance is key if he is
going to have maybe a play in in in the
American Rider Cup team in the future
