Analyzing notable changes for the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am | Golf Central | Golf Channel

golf Central on YouTube is brought to
you by the Paradigm AI smoke woods and
irons from Callaway hello I’m Anna
Jackson and this is your golf Central
update well it was an absolute thrilling
final hour so the LPGA drive on
Championship as Nelly cter posted a
final round 73 to push Lydia Co who was
on the edge of LPGA Hall of Fame
qualification into a playoff where
ultimately Nelly cter would get it done
after two playoff holes Megan Kang
posted in that solo thre and Lucy Lee
with her first top 10 finish as a member
on the LPGA Tour so let’s hear from our
Champion Nelly
C I’m not going to lie and say that you
know there weren’t doubts and negative
thoughts creep into my head and
fortunately I have an amazing teammate
caddy right next to me that I get to
share this journey with and the gray
hairs with and um uh he he kept me in it
a good bit as well as the crowd
say to you specifically down the stretch
um when I made that double on um whole
15 he just told me Hey listen you’re
still tied for the lead let’s go like
come on um he was just he he pretty much
told me to uh get my head out of my m
so so uh but I I like that I I like when
he um tells me that you know I need to
get my head out of my ass I know all of
your wins are special what does this one
mean to to get it done in front of these
fans in front of this this really super
supportive crowd I know you spoke to it
on the green yeah I mean every every win
has a story
um this one was definitely just with the
struggles of last year um
and just with today as well I thought I
completely lost it and having the
hometown being in my hometown and having
the hometown support was incredible like
I I honestly didn’t didn’t think this
many people would show up and even on
just the first day on Thursday the
amount of people that were out here um
supporting was incredible and I couldn’t
have done it without all their like
positive
energy it is a feast for the eyes this
week as the PGA Tour makes their annual
trip to Pebble Beach for the new look
Pebble Beach proam there’s a signature
event this season which means that most
of the top players in the world will be
on hand this week including world number
one Scotty Sheffer and the man who could
catch him that is Rory maroy and because
this event replaces the WM Phoenix Open
as a signature event there are some
quite significant changes to the
tournament as you take a look at this
you can see the field size has cut
almost in half to just 80 players it’ll
be played at two courses instead of
three you’ve got Monterey Peninsula Who
will no longer feature and celebrities
and amateurs will only play the first
two days instead of through Saturday so
for more let’s get out to the Monteray
Peninsula for the first time this week
as we find Todd Lewis down there Todd we
know this is a big week for this event
the first time it’s been raised to a
signature event any we know the changes
to the format but any changes on the
ground the size the scale are you
noticing anything a little
different well first off Anna uh last
time you and I were talking and I was
out on tour and you were in the studio I
was in Hawaii and now I am here with
Still Water Cove behind me I am
certainly leading the golf channel in
Strokes gain panoramic views for sure it
is a gorgeous day here on the montere
peninsula maybe the best day I’ve ever
experienced here at Pebble Beach very
little wind sun is out uh players are
playing some practice rounds but that’s
not going to be the case later because
weather is going to come in later in the
week and affect this tournament but in
regards to changes on the grounds that
we have seen no the same infrastructure
is up um they are expecting huge crowds
as they normally get here for the AT&T
Pebble Beach pram but the significant
thing is the fact that it’s a 36 hole
tournament for the amers so the
celebrity run that you normally see on
Saturday here at pble beach will be
replaced by the golfing celebrities all
the stars that make up the PGA Tour will
be on the grounds here at pble beach
every player that has that is eligible
to compete in the AT&T pble Beach pram
which is again a signature event has
committed to this tournament so yes
maybe not as many actors as we have seen
in years past but we are going to have a
lot of star power in regards to PG yeah
I didn’t want to comment on how nice it
looked behind you but you really have uh
nailed it with your schedule so far this
this year T you mentioned the field
there we’ve gone from 156 to 80 players
can you just explain the makeup of the
field this week yeah these Signature
Events are interesting in the fact that
they that certain players have to
qualify for them through the Aon next 10
which goes back to the FedEx Cup fall
from last year positions 51 through 60
in the FedEx Cup standings and also the
Aon swing five now interestingly because
there are 80 players uh in this field
due to a proam format they need 80
players in regards to that Aon next 10
the PJ tour actually went beyond 60 and
went 51 through
69 uh with Keith Mitchell being the last
player at 69 to qualify for this event
so it’s actually the Aon next 19 that’s
getting into the field there are also
four sponsor invitations handed out here
for the AT&T Pebble Beach program those
four are Maverick m
who has played well here in the past and
also three PJ T policy board members in
Adam Scott web Simpson and Peter monat
who was in the mix last year as well so
it’s definitely going to be an
interesting field filled with some of
the guys who normally wouldn’t be in
this tournament but are and we’ll see if
they’re going to take advantage of the
opportunity yeah massive opportunity for
a lot of the guys in this week’s field
and in terms of some news that perhaps
we can expect further down the road with
this event Todd I mean AT&T has been the
sponsor of this event since 1986 but
this year is the last year on their
existing contract as title sponsors now
we know the PJ tour is recently lost the
likes of farmers Honda Wells Fargo any
news on the future of their relationship
with this tournament well you look at
the business model of AT&T when it comes
to the PGA Tour they were not only the
sponsor of this tournament but the AT&T
Byron Nelson they have decided to not be
the title sponsor of the Byron n Nelson
and put all their chips here into the
AT&T Pebble Beach pram now of course
this is a signature event meaning AT&T
is going to have to Pony up a little
more money but as it stands right now
this is the final year of their
agreement with the PGA Tour as the title
sponsor here at Pebble Beach now AT&T
would like to continue this sponsorship
the tour would love to have AT&T as you
mentioned an it’s been a long standing
sponsor on the PGA tour to continue
being the sponsor as well talks are
going on I can tell you I talked to
Steve John who is in charge of the mon
Monteray Peninsula Foundation also
basically the tournament director here
and he knows that that that
conversations are continuing and they
would like to being the tour have Pebble
Beach remain a signature venue with a
very strong sponsor like AT&T so we’re
going to have to see what develops after
this week but both the tour and
AT&T they’re going to have their eyes on
this tournament and how is it is
received given that it is a signature
event now yeah no matter what happens
this event Todd has such a signature
Place really in the schedule it’s
something that I know players always uh
love to come back to Pebble Beach we’re
going to see some players in this field
that we’ve a never seen or haven’t seen
return for a long time how special do
you feel like this week is in the
calendar on the PGA tour you know it’s
interesting you mentioned because of
where this tournament had fallen in the
schedule in years past a lot of the
bigger names opted not to play here
understandably because it is a long
season but now that it is a signature
event and as I mentioned all those that
were qualified have committed to play
you’re going to have players uh
returning to Pebble Beach that’ never
that haven’t been here in a while for
instance Justin Thomas is out playing a
practice round here today he hasn’t
played Pebble Beach since 2014 so this
is a 10-year return for him some players
have never played this tournament
including Hadi matama Kar CA who’s a
California guy and world number one
Scotty Sheffer so they are going to
enjoy their walk and if it’s a day like
this they’re going to enjoy every aspect
of it because it’s just flat out
beautiful but rain is in the forecast
Thursday Friday and Saturday so they’re
going to have to find some elements as
[Music]
well

  1. They keep cutting out courses. No more Poppy Hills, which was a novelty. Charles Seaver is the only guy I ever saw putt those greens well. Now they have no more Monterey Peninsula Country club course. It was probably never hard enough. Best Wishes to the contestants.

  2. LIV is destroying the Tour because what corporations would sponsor tournaments when the top players are playing on the Saudi Tour

  3. Yeah, let’s get rid of signature events and encourage all those who want guaranteed money and no-cut to go to LIV where no one will watch them. At this point I would prefer to watch Korn Ferry where guys are playing for their livelihoods.

  4. The changes all sucked. There was nothing better about this year. I have attended this tourney many times and PB is one of the best places in the world. Bing Crosby and God were not happy this year.
