Sahith Theegala ‘looked very comfortable’ at WM Phoenix Open | Golf Central | Golf Channel

sahit the gala let’s take a look at what
he was able to do and it’s just going to
be part one and part two we’re going to
start with part one that was before the
delay the gala already won Under at the
T at the par 312 this is A++ stuff right
here I mean this is it’s cold this is
right into the teeth of the
wind gorgeous shot to that back left toe
location the gala keeping it going part
five15 for birdie and a par five that is
typically reachable in two but because
of the wind dire more players playing as
a three shot hole so more conventional
way to get
birdie let’s spin it to the other side
nice little run here 2 three4 you
wouldn’t think he was in birdie position
there you just know you wouldn’t You’
think all right trying to make trying to
save some Paws but uh he had higher
hopes and higher
Ambitions so a birdie on the second then
a birdie on the third and then this page
on the fourth yeah this part three
downwind over the bunker to this whole
location a lot lot of players hit very
firm but one of the better shots of the
day gave himself good birdie
position and shortly after play was
called Kira Dixon caught up with him to
ask how is he going to handle this
weather
delay every was just getting stiff cuz
they’re all wet um but yeah I was I it
was it was kind of a situation where
normally I’d want to keep playing but in
this condition I’m like get me out of
here I bogied five which I wasn’t even
upset about I was playing so long so um
and then six was going to be into the wi
off the right so I’m not unhappy that I
that I didn’t hit that t-shot yet so um
yeah I’m just going to look at it in a
positive
way so coming out of the delay you
didn’t have to face it as strong of wind
hit good drive great approach to this
point comes out firing with a
birdie talked about it didn’t want to
necessarily stay on the golf course and
he did some things that other players
were not able to do and that was to take
advantage of these last four holes is
playing extremely difficult on this uh
front nine this green relatively flat
except the front portion which a little
UPS slope and again downwind into this
hole a good position for sah to give
himself a two-p car on the seventh and
then the eightth and nth holes played
two of the most difficult in sah missed
the Fairway right ball above the feet
you you probably want to hit a fade in
here but kind of forc his hand given the
ball position but still hit one one of
the most incredible shots that I saw him
hit today even though it doesn’t look
spectacular only 25% of the field had
hit this green in regulation before the
delay ninth cold not much better only
35% and hit this green before the delay
sah piped to drive and then this
approach
shot he didn’t just keep the momentum
from early in the day he gained momentum
those last four holes played so
difficult he shot one under to finish up
his round he finished strong they take
it to the house and put the finishing
touches on a 6 under 65 round of the day
so far day number one Andrew Novak
though part of the story line tomorrow
five under through nine before play
suspended today due to
Darkness with sah theala like we’ve seen
in his PGA Tour career especially what
he’s been able to do with the WM Phoenix
Open he’s been in this spot before as
far as having 18 whole leads today
doesn’t count we haven’t quite finished
the first round but he’s 0 for two
converting those 18 hole leads you
remember the 2022 W Phoenix Open was the
leader at the halfway mark had the lead
going into the final round the story was
would he get his first one on the PGA
tour or would Scotty sheffler get his
first up on the PGA tour sah had his
breakthrough year and a half later
brandle at the for net Championship yeah
65 today uh you know that’s uh roughly
seven shots better than the field
average you know he’s one of that
talented group of players who won the
has Haskins award that goes all the way
back to the 70s early 70s kinshaw won
the
that group has won 320 events 33 Majors
he’s going to add to that he’s already
got one on the board you you just sort
of highlighted some of his creativity
we’ll go back and take a look at it that
that 12th hole the whole location way in
the back left if you get your if you get
the ball flying a little bit right of
the center there’s a spine there ball
can get in the water so the this is kind
of a nightmare it’s in and off the left
so it’s easy to lose it to the right so
towering High draw here into that left
hole location and you know the ability
to work the ball uh you know it just
pays dividends I I I realize guys get
one shot and they just want to play that
all the time but it just pays dividends
to be able to work it both directions
and look he’s missed this to the left
he’s got pretty basic shot right here
but the guy is a incredible uh Scrambler
you know when he we first saw him here
and you saw his flare for scrambling you
thought when he gets in the Masters he’s
going to look pretty good right there he
did finish in the top 10 in the Masters
last year no surprise beautiful putty
Stroke by the way sort of a short pop
stroke stands up tall a lot of T guys
will bend over more but he doesn’t he
almost looks like Ben crino when he’s
standing up to it’s got that kind of
look to it maybe a little Bill Rogers
thrown in there as well second hole
watch his left wrist right here now he’s
on an UPS slope most people would trap
this hit it lower watch his left wrist
watch it see that okay that left wrist
he cuffed it extended it all the way
through right there so he’s he’s he’s a
magician out there he’s trying to shots
most people there would hit a little low
bump and run maybe a wedge or something
get it on the ground this guy just
invents stuff around the greens you
don’t see many people on that kind of
lie hit that shot again Paige just
showed this shot but it’s worth seeing
again he is typically a fader again the
fact that he can work in any direction
he’s comfortable out there creating big
sweeping hook here big sweeping hook I
mean when we’re out out of our camera
came right back in found the green so
you know he’s out there I know he said
he was happy to get off the golf course
but I love watching the guy and and it
was great seeing him back on the golf
course I mean he looks like he’s just
out there having fun and uh and enjoying
the opportunity to create the canvas is
he just out there I’m just I’ve never
done that before I’m gonna do that I’ve
never done that before I’m gonna do that
it’s really fun watching him it was an
uncomfortable day it’s a day that a lot
of players would get tight just stick to
a shot you can know and can control and
the opposite is what we saw from siah
you saw him raising the roof you saw him
giving it an interview during the delay
hands in Pocket very relaxed he he
looked very comfortable and what was a
very uncomfortable day yeah that was a
great getap by our Kirk Dixon a talk
with sah during that break and when he
said you know what I want to get off the
course I was thinking he’s one of
us

Golly gee I love this kid. He shapes it like Bubba and just has so much creativity.
