golf Central on YouTube is brought to
you by the new Chrome tour golf ball
from
Callaway hey there I’m George savus and
this is your golf Central update and
we’ve got great weather here in
Scottdale for the start of the WM
Phoenix Open very different story to
what we saw over the weekend at the AT&T
Pebble Beach proam they had sustain Wing
gust 40 to 50 mph touch
68 so they had to suspend the final
round of play shortened it to 50 four
holes for the first time since 2016 on
the PGA tour and that means Windam Clark
is your winner after that course record
Saturday 60 Windham Clark uh winner by
one was clutch on the 18th hit that par
five and two two putted for birdie miss
the eagle putt for 59 but the final
margin one over ludig oberg who gets
solo second Matthew Pon who won the
Farmers Insurance open solo third
continuing his hot play Justin Thomas
looking good another top 10 finish
T6 at 13 under par along with world
number one Scotty
sheffler ever since Willam Clark burst
on the scene last May it’s been winning
in bunches now has three wins on the PGA
tour including the Wells Fargo and last
summers’s US Open that’s tied for Victor
havin with the most wins over the last
nine months Lucas Glover with a couple
he won those back to back you remember
the win of championship and then the
first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs
meanwhile this was the scene back in
October last fall Luke Donald captaining
team Europe to that Victorious 16 and a
half to 11 a half performance over Team
USA at the Ryder Cup in Rome and now
Luke Donal will be running it back like
we had heard last fall end of November
this was the tweet from Ryder Cup Europe
two more years so Donald is juggling
playing on the PGA tour we’ve seen him
earlier this year on the DP World Tour
and now I’ll be prepping for the 20 25
Ridder Cup in New York earlier he was
with us on golf Central with brandle
Sham B Paige McKenzie and myself to talk
about all the different different hats
he’s wearing at this stage of his career
now let’s welcome in Luke Donald and and
Luke you’ve already had a couple starts
over on the DP World Tour this is your
PGA Tour season debut where’s the game
at and what are you looking forward to
this
week yeah thanks George uh the game’s
been pretty solid um my my first week uh
playing in Dubai which was a long time
since my my last competitive round back
all the way to to the BMW Championship
in in Wentworth so it I I had a solid
20th Place against a reasonably good
field and um yeah my game has been solid
so you know as I said I’m always ever
hopeful that uh good things are on the
horizon and uh yeah I’m looking forward
to to being here in
Phoenix Luke uh first of all congratul
ulations to you and uh your Ryder Cup
team uh you guys were spot on start to
finish from opening ceremonies to the
closing ceremonies so congratulations
and you have such a diverse and
interesting background there are great
many things I’d love to talk to you
about U top five penos uh etc etc we’ll
say that for another time but I figur we
might as well just dive right into it uh
look you’re the writer Cup captain
you’re going to be playing on on foreign
soil next go around uh recently Roy
maroy has made some conciliatory remarks
regarding John Ron and the possibility
of him possibly playing on that Ryder
Cup team or Live players possibly
playing on that Ryder Cup team two
questions one uh is that something that
you’ve talked to potential rder Cup
players for the next go around about and
do you see a way forward that that might
happen well well Brando obviously if we
go back to even my first captaincy I did
not tell Live players that they could
not be a part of it obviously there was
two criteria you had to be a European
and you had to be a member of the
European tour uh DP World Tour I should
say um you know certain players on live
decided to resign their membership
certain players were still eligible and
I was keeping track of every player so
um again this year um we have S months
till the the qualification criteria uh
starts um there’s one rule that sort of
applied to my whole captaincy that
served me really well and that was just
kind of staying in the moment and
staying in the present and controlling
what I can control so again the golf
landscape is obviously ever changing so
for me to like comment on what the
criteria is going to look like uh when
it’s not happening for 7 months I think
is is uh irresponsible so again we’ll
see what happens uh you know whether
there’s deals being done with piff and
PJ tour or what it might be and uh I’ll
take uh take it as it
comes over the course of your career
Luke a lot has changed equipment wise as
well as what I would call an
informational Revolution just a lot more
access to statistics and analytics I I
know you employed some of it in Ryder
Cup but can you give an example of how
information like that has made an impact
in your game and how you evaluate how
you play the
game well certainly paig one of the
first I was one of the first people to
talk to Mark Brody who obviously came up
with Strokes gained uh it was a big
influence in my practice how I got to
world number one and what I needed to do
to be number world number one he gave me
a clear picture that you know if you
only want to be the best in the world
you have to gain two shots on the field
per day uh on average so I couldn’t do
that off the tea but I I figured out if
if I got a lot better at putting a lot
better at short game a lot better at
wedges that I could uh you know get to
hopefully two shots on average around
and that would get Propel me to world
number one so you know even back this is
back in 2009 2010 you know I was
starting to talk to these guys uh like
Mark who really helped me uh with my
game and how to prepare prep and and and
set my game up for certain drills to
accomplish all that Luke you’ve played
in this uh WM Phoenix Open nine times so
it’s uh seems that you Embrace this
atmosphere can you try to describe what
it is like to compete in this event is
there any other sporting event golf
event in the world that uh that sort of
simulates the atmosphere
here yeah I’m just trying to get a
little taste of what New York might be
like next year brandle um you know this
this is an this is an amazing event
obviously it’s called The People’s open
for for a uh you know obviously for for
a reason and you I was just walking down
18 today I playing in the Monday pram
and this has a much bigger buildout than
the Ridder cup and uh it’s an
unbelievable event um it creates an
amazing uh atmosphere amongst the
players you feel more nervous coming
down the stretch I would say than most
any other event um because of you know
the buildout and the people and the
noise and and the the the atmosphere and
it’s it’s it’s fun to play in front of
and uh yeah obviously I hope uh
hopefully I’m you know in one of the
last groups on the weekend and enjoying
you know the the really loud
crowds Luke you we in two hats obviously
with Team Europe Captain there comes a
lot of responsibilities that you have to
tend to as part of the buildup to 2025
for that Rider cup you’re you’re also
clearly working on your game grinding on
your game you’re out here on a Monday at
this stage your career what motivates
you well you know as you said I have two
hats on what motivates me is trying to
give my my team the the best opportunity
in 2025 to be successful to try and
create that good culture for them to to
have a chance to succeed and and do
something that’s really difficult and
win win an a way rider cup but you know
I think I I I have enough time also to
work on my game and uh my plan is to
play some events here on the PJ tour
some events on the DP World Tour and you
know hopefully um you know I can give
myself a few chances to try and win and
get back in that Winner Circle it’s been
a long time but again I think at golfers
you always feel like uh there’s always
that one week that uh you could put
those four rounds together and I
certainly see a lot of promise and a lot
of um um you know confidence in my game
in the last few months I’ve been really
happy with my ball striking my putting
at certain times so again I’m I’m I’m
excited for uh this year and playing and
and being captain at the same time I
know we’re excited to see it I’m going
to do one before you go plan off what
brandle had asked you earlier and let’s
just have you fill in the blank the WM
Phoenix Open
is is the the people’s open the greatest
uh atmosphere in golf outside of the
ride cup I got to say that outside of
the r there you go there you go true
politician I had to catch myself
there all right thanks so much Luke
thanks Luke enjoyed
it
