necro doesn’t just add his name to the
list of winners this season he adds his
name to the list of Longshot winners
this season really going all the way
back to the centry with Chris Kirk at
150 to one none more so than Nick Dunlap
the amateur winning the American Express
starting the week at 400 to one and
Austin ecro won 100 to one to win the
cognizant classic in the Palm Beaches so
it really has been the theme of The
Season’s Champions so far but let’s just
give ourselves a reminder of where this
man comes from he played a big part of
that 2018 Oklahoma State national
championship team look at some of his
teammates in Stillwater you got Victor
hlin you got Matthew wolf both part of
that championship team so three tall
winners on Alan bratton’s uh
Championship Squad pretty impressive
stuff from those cowboys so a reminder
of his bio he was a freshman back in
2018 Oklahoma State finished high for
12th as an amateur at the worldwide
technology Championship back in 2020
eventually earned his card through the
corn fre a Tores just a couple of years
ago in last season four top 10 including
that top 10 at the US Open so this man
is a fine young player we’ve known how
much potential he’s had since breaking
out in college back with the Cowboys but
what was it about this week Ral that
really sha in terms of his game well uh
pretty much all the aspects of the game
were really good but uh I particularly
like the ball striking Tia green he was
really really good and and I thought
under the clutch situation that had put
himself uh after bogey in the 14th going
to the bear trap uh I thought the
performance was just unbelievable for
the last hour I want to show you four
swings in a row this is the t-shot now
at 15 remember he has just bogey the
last hole missed a short putt total
swing with freedom there no hang on no
guiding whatsoever hits it about 18 ft
right below the hole then at 16 he
follows it up with another really good
shot put the ball in the Fairway off the
team what you have to
do his approach play was simply
phenomenal and has been pretty much his
entire career that what is what he is
known for just left of the flag there
very aggressive shot that’s a putt he
would make a really important Putt and
then at 17 man with a lead like he had
there a couple of shots you would think
he would be aimed left but no he starts
it right at the flag just a little baby
draw over the back of the flag there
very aggressive line he took and then
the t-shot at 18 watch this one there is
no steering at all here total freedom in
this swing and just let’s it rip
tremendous shot there now this guy has
never won a PGA Tour event hasn’t won a
tournament of any kind since 2019 and uh
to be able to perform like that under
that pressure a lot of guys can do it on
Thursday morning but not Sunday
afternoon to win and that is a great
point I mean acris all of his interviews
that we heard with Kira and Damon
throughout the week you know he doesn’t
really give much away he’s very sort of
Level Playing Field when it comes to his
emotions he slept on the co54 hole lead
which he has he’s only done once before
in his career he was top three across
all rounds this week so he’s been in
contention all week long but has managed
those emotions so well especially across
that three and a half hour rain delay as
well what does that show you about the
kind of player that he can be when he
doesn’t have those extreme highs or lows
I really like how even keeled he is both
on the course and off you know his press
conference was that we’ve been watching
uh all week long have pretty short
answers to him you know there’s not a
whole lot of highs not a whole lot of
lows no complaining no whining if things
go wrong uh but also I watched him today
walk from the 14th green after the bogey
over to the 15th te it wasn’t bothered
at all uh by what had happened now he
was nervous all day long he did say that
uh but I love that sort of even Keel and
this is something that’s not new to him
Steve sanss told a great story on the
broadcast this morning on Golf Channel
about he had talked to Steve had talked
to scotford plank another great young
player from Oklahoma State who now is
not young anymore uh but uh scotford
plank told him that Austin eot was the
second best 17-year-old player that he
had ever seen the first best was Rory
mroy uh so that says how good Austin has
been for long long time it’s just when
you don’t win a lot of tournaments and
you’re not a real flashy guy like he
isn’t you don’t get all the attention he
certainly doesn’t have kind of the
following of a Min woi let’s say and and
doesn’t have that type of personality
but he is just really really good and
solid in all aspects of his game yeah
and what a time to win at this part of
the Season as well of course this win
gets him now into all the remaining
Signature Events of the season the
players which is next week the uh two
weeks away the Masters just about five
six weeks away the PGA Championship as
well he’s as you said an understated guy
but a really solid game is he the kind
of player that you can see competing on
these next level stages that he’s now
eligible for I can and particularly the
next two because if you think about the
next two they are really important
tournaments the Aron Palmer imitational
and of course the PLAYERS Championship
The Jewel of the PGA Tour but you also
have to look at those two golf courses
they demand tremendous ball striking
they are wonderful tests of all aspect
of a game and uh I expect Austin to go
up to Orlando now or down to Orlando uh
and really play well there I don’t s uh
wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him
in contention one of the next couple
weeks if not both uh because the ball
striking just is so solid and the
putting was reliable this week when he
was leading Sony about a month and a
half ago uh his putting totally fell
apart on the weekend puted terrible uh
but that was not the case at all this
weekend yeah a rookie last year he’s now
locked up his PGA Tour card through the
2026 season Austin err has got nothing
to lose what a year he could have now in
2024

  1. Austin Eckroat was VERY lucky to win. Did he run away with it? No. I think they were desperate for a damn good field, thats why it was 'easy'. I know Anna and Mark couldnt believe -17 was the winning score. With Mother Nature this week showing her face, not surprised. I think if there wasnt a tie after 54, this would have been 54. I think they didnt want 2 events to be 54 holes. The big boys needs to bring it this week. Austin was 110 to 1. I knew it would come down to how he survived the bear trap. Him getting to -17 basically forced him to play 18 as a 3 shot par 5 when he could have gotten home in 2. Rules officials were lucky that Austin survived the trap. We could have had a 3 way playoff. By the time he teed off yesterday they had maybe 20-30% of the fans they normally get. Also with this on a Monday the fans werent able to attend cause of work.
