Takeaways from Round 2 of the Mexico Open at Vidanta | Golf Central | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1

golf Central on YouTube is brought to
you by the Paradigm AI smoke woods and
irons from
Callaway hi there I am Todd Lewis that
is Jim Gallagher Jr and we are on S side
it’s the Mexico open ADV vant round
number two in the books and want to give
you our golf Central update plenty of
action and a lot of it
surrounding Mexico’s own Alvaro Ortiz
one of eight Mexican players in the
field and he is taking advantage of the
opportunity here he is on the par 54
yeah 66 ft coming down the slope just
lagging it up there to about 3 and 1/2
ft no problems there yeah makes birdie
he started on the 10th hole today by the
way now Ortiz on the par for 16 this is
his second yeah 505 yds this from 200
yds this one of the tougher holes on the
golf course and this is a good looking
shot right
here sticks it to around 10 ft and now
trying to convert the birdie to get to
eight under and let’s see if he can get
this one that’s a good looking stroke
and a great
and so artiz is gaining some momentum
now as he plays his opening n move now
to the par five 18th after a birdie on
16 and this is a Nifty little chip yeah
found a chip off this past palum you
feel like you can kind of just kind of
spin it just a little bit maybe not
exactly what he wanted but that’ll work
yeah goes out the 31 in his opening nine
slowed down a bit on his closing nine
until the par 56 yeah this from 260
yards and this is not slowing down any
this front whole location is tough to
get hit right into the bank short slows
it down and that gets to about 20 ft
challenging putt here for the eagle and
he handles it like a veteran yeah you
see the dark grass that’s into the grain
gets to the top of the slope that’s down
grain trying to get it to move from
right to left he’s following it and just
enough
speed and Alvar
Ortiz bogey free 64 he goes out in 31 as
I mentioned look at what he did T green
hit every Fairway missed just one green
and shoots that 64 and now has a chance
to win his country’s National
Championship AR Damon hack caught up
with Ortiz after that incredible
round with alardo Ortiz Boy free 64
today what would you say was the best
part of your round today oh I think
definitely the the bow striking uh it
was very solid from TAA green uh he
actually put it very well um didn’t make
as many spots as yesterday but
definitely uh feel very solid out there
just very comfortable and you know um
I’ve been working really hard on my
swing this past year and it’s good to
see that you know hard work is pay off
it really is you got a couple wins on
the hit of the golf tour in Mexico at
the end of 2023 how much has that
carried over that great play into this
year as well no definitely a big time I
think um I closed very strong the Latin
America season and then um playing very
well in the in the Mexican tour uh and
that carry that momentum to for K school
and you know been playing really well uh
just excited to get this opportunity
very thankful for group of alenas and
and vidanta that they make this happen
and they invited me back so happy to be
in the weekend and and in a good
position originally from guadalahara how
much support do you feel out there on
the fairways and greens oh it’s awesome
man it’s definitely cool to to see um
all my my family and friends out here
and you know uh we don’t get to play in
Mexico very often and especially P event
so excited to to see all all my you know
all my people your brother won on the p
G tour 4 years ago what will it take for
you to become a PGA Tour winner this
weekend I definitely have a very good
weekend yeah there’s still a lot of golf
to be played 36 12 you know anything can
happen uh got to focus right now got to
you know get a good practice in recover
and and get ready for tomorrow well done
we’ll see you on Saturday thank
you yeah he’s a focus this weekend but
so are other players like Eric vent
royan shot a 63 on Thursday here he is
in his second round on the par 512 yeah
open 64 last year finished 33rd trying
to keep that momentum going in the
second round nice putt there did not
have the action that he had on Thursday
but still hung in there now at nine in
the par here’s voran for Birdie on seven
it’s a good looking stroke plenty of
speed there and that’s a confident one
as well that shoots a two under 69 10
under par one out of the lead Sammy
valami from Finland this a momentum
keeper absolutely he made a lot of good
puts yesterday but none bigger than this
one right here
that keeps him at nine under par and
then on the par 3 11th some great shot
here yeah
absolutely 195 yards just bringing it in
a little bit left to right the whole
location over on that right side and
that really holds well downwind is as
well nice shot there yeah he birdies
there but he Bogies 13 Bogies 14 you
think he might get a little sideways but
then on 17 this great shot this ball
does not move maybe a foot or two off
line goes right at
it so he makes that one also Birdie’s 18
and he moves to 11 underpar Matt Wallace
veteran Five Years on the PGA tour
winner on this tour winner at the DP
world so here he is on the par for
second yeah second hole played tougher
in the morning the last two days and
this is a great shot to that whole
location on the right side two feet he
knocks that in putted beautifully all
day here’s another example on the par 3
fth this for birdie yesterday he’s
finished strong he’s trying to finish
strong here he started on the back nine
and it is a confidence stroke right
there gets him to eight under P now
Wallace on the par 5 six this for Eagle
just like Ortiz yeah very similar spot
here we talked about you got to take
advantage of the par fives and he does
just
that he’s on a roll of 10 then he gets
to the par 47 this is a short part four
and he really takes advantage yeah he
goes up in the air with this a lot of
guys might go a little bit lower hit a
little bit of the skip shot there but he
plays it that way and hits it close to
MC birdie yeah he finishes at 11 under
depart Wallace with a second round
65 about Jake knap young rookie out of
UCLA from the corn fairy tour he’s 200
through his first six holes now on that
par 47 yeah his iron play has been
fantastic only missed one green the
first day that a well played shot as
well that gets him to seven under and
nap on the par for eight he’s known for
his length off the T but he putted
really well as well today yeah only 10
bir’s on the eight very difficult hole
and he does snuck it in the right side
he’s at 8 under par making a move in the
afternoon now nap on the par 3 11
another birdie look yeah miss the green
at the 10th no problem there and then
now this putt here staring it down oh he
knows it’s
in and now we move to the 16th hole
watch the second shot now love his golf
swing plenty of speed hits it a mile
this one coming in from right to left
it’s all about controlling the Aon play
here he controlled it almost can it Taps
that in and he like Ortiz shoots a 64 so
we got a four-way tie for the lead
heading into the weekend with Ortiz Matt
Wallace balamaki and Jake napnap by the
way missed a a putt under eight feet on
the final hole the par five 18 that
would have given him the outright lead B
royan still in the mix every player in
the mix here including Tony Fen now the
defending Champion sitting just five off
the lead all right first I want to start
with
Ortiz everybody’s going to be watching
him on the ground rooting for him here
in Mexico we’d like to see what he’s
going to do but uh under those
conditions but I I’m interested to see
what you think he’s going to do well did
you see how he smiled when they
mentioned when Damon asked him about
playing in front of the crowd his
friends and family and how he lit up I
think that’s how he has to approach it
he’s got a great opportunity uh we’ve
talked about the impact he could have to
Junior golfers uh and future golfers
here in Mexico and it’s a great
opportunity but he can’t get too far
ahead of himself I think that’s the
tough part he’s got to stick with the
process if he can do that but he’s
playing with a lot of confidence he’s
won at every level and he’s trying to
win at this level it would be a dream it
would change not only his career but his
life and it could change the lives of a
lot of people yeah it could also change
life of Jake nap again who is a PJ tour
rookie Sammy valaki who got to the PGA
Tour uh via the DP World Tour Matt
Wallace we is approving winner and a
quick note about Ortiz he is the younger
brother of Carlos Ortiz and Carlos Ortiz
one of four Mexican born players to win
on the PGA tour he would love to add his
name to that list but what do they have
to do on the weekend to control their
emotions they have to stay in the
process stay in the process play with
freedom if you can do that you’re in
good state but someone’s going to make a
run early in the morning so you got to
watch out going to be a fun day tomorrow
here it all the time one shot at a time
he’s Jim Gallagher I’m Todd Lewis thanks
for watching
