Falcons’ penalty for Kirk Cousins tampering could alter draft | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
https://www.youtube.com/NFLonNBC

there’s Kirk Cousins walking to the
podium on March the 13th just a few
hours after the official start of the
league year and the conclusion of the
52-hour negotiating window and it was
during that press conference that Kirk
Cousins said some things he shouldn’t
have said somebody should have run out
and tackled him at some point he said he
spoke with the head athletic trainer on
Tuesday which is a no no under the
tampering rules he said he talked to
director of player Personnel Ryan Pace
well since it was just a few hours
removed from when he could have spoken
to Ryan Pace probably happened before he
was allowed to do so he said Kyle pittz
had been aggressively recruiting him if
he did so with the knowledge or
direction of the team that’s a violation
he was even involved in recruiting
Darnell money from the Bears to the
Falcons on Tuesday of that week which
suggests that at some level he was put
up to it by the Falcons after he agreed
to terms there so there are layers and
levels of tampering that happened here
and I mention all that because shefy
reported yesterday that there could be
punishment announced this week in the
Falcons case of tampering with Kirk
Cousins now right before the draft like
last year like kind of with the
Cardinals there if there’s if there’s
some sort of a pcks deal that would make
sense and if they’re going to lose picks
in 2024 it would make sense to announce
it right before the draft and it’s
minimal attention if you announce it
five minutes before the draft begins I
don’t know if they’ll try to do it again
Chris but you know somebody asked me
well what are they going to do well
they’re going to do whatever they want
to do because that’s what they do they
make it up as they go and it comes down
to how aggressively they investigated
how many violations they actually found
how angry how much the Vikings are right
how much sway does Rich McKay have the
chair of the competition committee there
there’s a lot of factors that go into it
at the end of the day they’re going to
do whatever they want to do forget about
precedent forget about formulas forget
about what’s right or what’s not right
it’s going to be whatever they want to
do are they going to want to slap them
on the wrist do they want to throw the
book at them what they do is going to
tell us what they wanted to do because
they’re going to do what they wanted to
do well I mean yeah agree agree to that
to a degree right I mean you know I
think they probably how egregious were
some of these errors and things like
that I think would dictate it a little
bit but yeah I don’t know what what
it’ll entail what what exactly will they
do here you will they swap a fifth and a
sixth round pick I mean I I don’t I
don’t know you know it is it’s a
different one and you know how do they
view this whole thing right that you
said I mean it’s it’s pretty apparent it
doesn’t take a special investigator to
realize the Falcons tampered with KT
cousins I mean we kind of know that it’s
just how aggressive was it yeah here’s
the key though and I’ll give you the
example yeah when Kirk Cousins first
mentioned the athletic trainer right
because this is a big issue how’s this
Achilles tended he initially said
meeting with and then changed it to
talking to remember that now if you’re
aggressive when it comes to the
investigation that light bulb goes off
and you say okay hang on now hang on why
did he say meeting with we need to
investigate whether or not they actually
met a GM from another team completely
disconnected from any of this said if he
actually met with the trainer on Tuesday
they should lose a first round pick for
this so the question is did someone Jeff
Pash or someone else at the league
office say we’re going to explore
whether or not there was a meeting we’re
going to investigate that we’re GNA ask
for phone records from the trainer phone
records from cousins surveillance video
from the facility we’re going to be
aggressive about it that’s the key how
aggressive you are in the investigation
Chris drives what you ultimately have in
front of you when you decide when you’re
going to issue punishment so I I’m I’m
not saying what they will or won’t do
I’m just saying they’re going to do what
they want to do and then we’ll be able
to work backward and figure out how
thorough of an investigation actually
happened hi it’s Mike Florio thanks for

  1. If Kirk had come from a big name franchise, they would do something. Vikes are a smaller market I wouldn’t expect much of anything

  2. Uhhhh, nope Florio hater…. it's gonna be next year. And one statement doesn't make for tampering hater. Not the Falcons fault Vikings aint sniffed a super bowl appearance since before I was born.

  3. This has nothing to do with the Vikings. He was not under contract with them. They were in the "legal tampering window". This is such a non story.

  4. Ryan Pace sighting!!!!! 😂 not to mention Ryan Pace drafted Mooney back when HE was the GM of the Bears. Lmao

  5. you can tell half these people in the comments don’t know how the nfl or football works why would the nfl make the falcons give there 8th pick to the vikings😂😂most they would do is take a late round this year or next year

  6. stop crying about nothing, florio just upset Kirk cousins left minny. There was nothing wrong kirk did his press conference at night time so him talking to the staff was that day before the presser. also him recruiting players and players recruiting players is not against the nfl rules, just like years prior when Pitts went to recruit Fields, stop crying over spilled milk

  7. Who would have thought the best thing Kirk would have done for the Vikings could have happened when he wasn't a Viking.

My question is, how did Kirk let this slip??? The guy is a PR guy how do you let this slip????

  8. Florio has been living off this for a month now. No it won’t alter this draft. And no, the Vikings won’t be personally benefiting the Vikings.

  9. Womp Womp… GET OVER IT FLORIO, the nfl isn’t gonna reward your team for MINOR tampering at best. STOP TRYING TO PULL THE STRINGS

  10. "And I mention all that because I'm forever salty that Kirk cousins went to the falcons instead of resigning with the Vikings and I'm going to sit here and not only do everything I can to convince myself that the Vikings didn't need him anymore, but also convinced myself that I don't look super biased sitting here pushing this falcons cousins tampering narrative everyday"

  11. Vikings aren’t getting the falcons #1 pick in a swap ! This is florio & scheffter pre draft propaganda kool aid & a lot of people took a big swig of it . Vikings will eventually get a 5th rounder & falcons will get fined . End of story.

  12. Florio is showing his Viking rooting interest craziness. There is NO WAY Atlanta should be penalized a FIRST ROUND pick for whatever degree of tampering they are found to have done. Whatever punishment is handed down should be far less than a 1st Round pick. UNLIKE the situation several years ago when Miami RIGHTFULLY lost a 1st Round pick (actually they should have lost SEVERAL 1st Round picks) for tampering with New England's MULTIPLE Super Bowl winning and starting QB Tom Brady while he was still under contract and yet to play his final season for the Patriots, in THIS CASE, Minnesota had CLEARLY ALREADY SIGNALLED THEY WERE MOVING ON FROM KIRK COUSINS. So Minnesota was not nearly as "aggrieved" or "disadvantaged" as was New England. And that doesn't even address the fact that Cousins has never won a Super Bowl (let alone 6 of them for NE) and was never the player that Brady was … so the comparative adverse impacts of the tampering are VASTLY DIFFERENT. And I can say this as a disinterested/objective football fan whose allegiance is to none of the teams mentioned (my team is a completely different one).

  13. Loosing the #8 1st round pick does little more than benefit every team very slightly by moving up one pick which is essentially nothing and does nothing to provide retribution to the Vikings which was the team that was harmed. A swap of #8 & #11 also doesn’t hurt the Falcons very much as they will likely get the same player at #11 as they would have gotten at #8 with 5 QB’s going in the top 11 picks, and as the Bears at #9 are taking a receiver and the Jets at #10 are taking an OT. The league should swap #8 with #23!

  14. I seriously doubt that Arthur Blank and Rich McKay would f up like that after massively following every tiny little protocol during their coaching search. Florio is a clown. Everyone knows it.
