golf Central on YouTube is brought to
you by the new Chrome tour golf ball
from
Callaway well the fans got all they
could handle weatherwise this week in
Scottdale Arizona and then on Sunday
Mother Nature finally delivering a
spectacular Scottdale afternoon for this
final round of the WM Phoenix Open and
of course we had some bonus golf for the
sixth time in nine years this goes to a
playoff with Nick Taylor getting the win
over Charlie Hoffman George savus
brandle shamble and Paige McKenzie let’s
take a look at how things unfolded down
the stretch because this was some elite
shot making with these two guys just
going punch for punch we pick it up with
Charlie Hoffman Charlie Hoffman had shot
64 in the third round that’s the lowest
round he’d ever shot here he comes back
out keeping right on for him turned at
32 makes the eagle there at 13 all of a
sudden jumps right up to the top of the
leaderboard and after missing the
Fairway on the 14th 173 yds out of the
rough you’d expect back maybe a little
bit of release number but look how high
in the air in soft
greens leaves just that for birdie so
another birdie and then at the 15th from
259 yards had a go with this green came
up just short so easy putt here didn’t
get the eagle down but turret plays
those three holes and four under par and
walks off that green with a three shot
lead but Nick Taylor still on this par
five laid up choosing to rely more on
the wedges 81 yards into this whole
location using the back
stop showing off I couldn’t believe he
laid up at the time he was three back I
could not believe he laid up but he
carved that hole up with a wedge off
with part 16 this for birdie it’s 17
around the bunker the shot I think he
will Ru at the end of this day was the
fact that he had a poor t- shot at 17
found the right bunker couldn’t attack
this pin so he was left for heroics just
to tput for par which he did Hoffman
still at 21 under Nick Taylor remember
after that birdie at 15 two back 167
yards today the high draw into this
whole location this where his undoing
came the previous year when he was in
contention but that leaves him for a
birdie and the previous year he did
shoot 65 talking about Nick Taylor he’d
need to Birdie the 18th to tie Charlie
Hoffman who missed his 20-footer for
birdie there so on the T Nick Taylor
needs to birdie to
tie and this going right Paige it’s a
popular place to miss it but this is not
a popular result how about that what
incredible break bounces through the
bunker could have very easily ended up
on the lip but still doesn’t have the
best of angles coming out of the rough
but the soft greens this week I think
really was the story of the week so you
could drive it into the rough with a
little bit more impunity and a lot more
control able to stop it right behind the
hole 9 9 ft 6 in away to tie and no one
had made it from above the hole on this
line yeah except ex the guy who was
leading in Strokes gain putting saving
the best for l so don’t put your good
tar up Elvis so back off the first
playoff ho they go and what do they do
they both get great looks at
birdie how about that step in how about
that
look and Charlie Hoffman from about half
the distance that Nick Taylor was to tie
he’s got it so they had both gutted
their t- shots right down the middle
made that hole look pretty simple in the
playoff they both scattered Nick Taylor
to the right Charlie Hoffman to the left
yeah it was an excellent shot at this
point given the mounding in front of him
the
grass heck of a shot I mean up against
the lip that church
pew 20 some odd feet down the hill big
breaking putt left to right never gets
it high
enough so Hoffman and with part Nick
Taylor huge break off the te had a t-
shot bound through the bunker 11 ft for
birdie in the
win and you would have thought we were
in Canada again lots of Canadians out
here they were eating it up Nick Taylor
with the flare for the dramatic his last
two wins on the PGA tour both walk-offs
and
playoffs Charlie Hoffman the runner up
you see Sam Burns and world number one
Scotty Sheffer who was trying to win
this for the third straight time he
comes up short those two guys finish
with a share of third afterwards K Dixon
with the
champ last year a runner up but this
year a winner in a playoff no less Nick
you were the winner of the WM Phoenix
Open what are the
emotions oh it was a long day I you know
to make the putts when I needed to um I
pride myself on a lot of that and you
know early on in that final round I was
hitting everywhere and and just battled
and uh to finish like I did and bir
theth hole twice this this hole has
given me trouble in the past and to step
up and hit great shots uh was amazing
it’s it’s a lot of fun to be in these
moments and um today was no different
walk us through this playoff with
Charlie Hoffman the two playoff
holes yeah I know Charlie had a great
Drive the first hole and obviously I
needed to to hit a good one and you know
to make the pot and make it on top of me
obviously you know it just felt like
birdie needed to be made to win and a
little opening when he hit it left so i’
I played a little safe right but again
got to good break that hopped out of the
bunker and hit a good shot and another
great pot I was seeing the line so well
all week you’ve had so much support here
from the Canadians and the crowd from
the Canadians on the PJ tour and your
family is here as well how much has that
meant to you it’s the best you know this
is this is our home for the last 10
years um and it’s uh to have family here
my in-laws are here all our friends it’s
uh it’s incredible and finally last year
you were the runner up this year it’s a
completely different story how much of a
different man and player are you now
with this one
yeah told me after last year’s second if
I had two wins in the in the next year
uh I don’t know if I would have believed
you but um you know everyone on my team
they they’ve helped so much it’s it’s
been amazing so I can’t think everyone
you know they know who they are there’s
there’s this golf is a team sport and I
could have done without him oh believe
it congratulations thank you
thanks Randle break it down well he was
missing drives all day long mostly to
the right and certainly missed it to the
right off the 18th T in regulation I
mean he’s standing up there needing a
birdie I thought well it’s done as soon
as he hitting the bunker he’s up against
that face he had almost an imposible
shot but Paige he gets incredibly lucky
leaves him with just a wedge into this
green and this is a microcosm of what we
saw all day a little bit shaky off the
te maybe a lot of bit shaky off the te
an incredible approach play with the
short irons and wedges and to be able to
do that in the moment when he needed to
knowing he had to convert in order to
face a playoff well what an epic week it
was for him on the greens of course
highlighted by round number one when he
shot 60 and had one of the top five
statistically speaking best rounds in
The Strokes gain era on the greens and
then in the playoff first go round he
made birdie looked conventional down the
Fairway on the green you can tell by how
disgusted he was with his t-shot page he
thought he was in trouble well and in
trouble he was in the previous two
rounds in regulation earlier in the week
where he did hit in the bunker and could
not Advance it to the green he knew who
how penalizing it could be had he not
gotten the break that he did in those
two previous rounds that you’re talking
about he laid up to about 50 yards and
hit sizzling wed shots in their Sav par
and again this is like an oncore
performance to what he did in regulation
another wedge to about 10 ft away and
this for the
win started the week with that
tournament record tying 60 ends the week
with a walk-off it seemed like he had
the perfect recipe of clutch puting
elite shot making and just a little bit
of luck at the right time he did exactly
that’s exactly it it was an epic week on
the greens an epic week with the wedges
and just a little bit of fairy dust on
top of it give him a lot of credit
because it can be very demoralizing if
you have no control off the tea and to
have the patience that he did to to have
the discipline that he did on the
approach shots to give himself that
opportunity to have the the his historic
the kind of flare uh to finish out this
golf tournament a lot of patience and
discipline and we hear all the time you
know what is it your little time in the
booth guys that come up that are still
playing what did you learn well I
learned that I don’t have to hit it
perfect all the time to win and
certainly today was a great example of
that and by the way for the third
consecutive week a player rode a 60 all
the way to Victory on the PGA tour let’s
just keep this train going yeah it’s
been uh quite the show so far we still
got one more stop on the West Coast
Swing next week the PGA T heads to La
for Paige McKenzie and brandle chample
I’m George savz thanks for joining us
