2024’S MOST FORGIVING METALWOODS? // Reviewing the Mizuno ST MAX Family

Today, Mikey is testing out the new Mizuno ST MAX driver, fairway wood and hybrid. These ultra-stable members of the ST-230 series could very well put Mizuno firmly back in the metalwood conversation for 2024.

The ST-MAX 230 family packs all that performance into an ultra-stable, large footprint profiles that will feel like you’re swinging on tracks. Engineered to deliver predictable straight flights, over and over from the widest range of off centre strikes.

that’s nice feathered 25 feathered this
like I’ve hit this before that nostalgic
feeling yeah all day looks so easy 25ish
I love the sound it sounds good it feels
really good too Brees sound really solid
all right guys we’re a little late to
the party with this uh review today Muno
St Max this is the year of the high Moi
Mike lots
of Brands kind of putting all their
marketing emphasis into why Moi matters
the retention of ball speed the
minimizing of Misses etc etc mauno has
their own version of that in the St Max
Max yep 230 this uh PGA Showtime release
it was um and uh when we first look down
at obviously we’re going to test
fairywood hybrid and the driver we all
look down at the driver like this sits a
little open it sits very clean it
doesn’t look like some of the higher moi
stuff you know gets a little hooded and
you know has that I guess draw by a
shape to it when we get to the driver it
sits very very clean yeah I’ve always
been a fan of mizuno’s hybrids and
fairywood shape really like it they
perform great the driver shape I’ve
always kind of thought okay you know
getting I’m getting there getting there
getting there this is my favorite driver
shape that Muno have ever made yeah I
agree it just it makes sense the the
proportions of it it’s just the
footprint of it it’s the right amount of
everything I think it might be a little
bit more sort of compressed in it in its
footprint obviously bringing that Center
gravity back a little bit and you can
see you know when we look at the sole of
of the driver you know we kind of
overlay that and where the position The
Mask right in the way back it just it
really looks to me like they’ve got the
shape right yeah even in the driver
looks great the the three-wood sets I
mean it sits perfect when their when
their first kind of St line of woods
came out a few years ago you tested them
you’re like these things are unreal then
we sold a buo to them um they just sit
super clean but easy to get off the
Fairway I think anyways
um I know excited to see how the uh the
St MAX Line uh Stacks up me too plant of
adjustability uh we can turn these guys
down a couple of degrees from obviously
the stated LOF in the bottom so we are
going to play this down a little bit
Loft when the CG goes back guys when we
get into these higher Moi clubs it does
typically create a little bit more spin
so if you are a little bit spin deprived
in your ball flight you could do it a
bit more these higher Moi clubs are are
really are for you a little bit less
speed same thing bit more launch bit
more spin it will really really help so
Mikey you don’t really struggle with
that so we are going to turn the Lofts
down a little bit on that and see how
you go let’s start with the hybrid at 19
turned open um 3 degrees we’re playing
at at 17 okay all right Billy bunter
let’s see where you are um you need a
new club in this are your back your
seven wood is gone yeah your five hybrid
is gone
yeah some Replacements the hybrid I
enjoyed but when playing in a bit of
wind struggle with it yeah um so yeah
this will be interesting this St Max
footprint wise is larger than the hybrid
that I was playing oh yeah um and
obviously sits a little bit more upright
but not the worst thing in the world
okay let’s uh let’s hit a few and see
what we
get ease of use is the premium here
that’s nice
feathered 25
feathered feels like I’ve hit this
before that nostalgic feeling yeah it’s
good I like it I like it a lot Y no it
feels good I think for anyone looking
for I I don’t think this is a aimed at
high handicapper at all no I mean that’s
uh I don’t know that’s like a Healy Miss
they’re okay strikes but they’re cutting
back obviously and I mean I take that
100 ft in the air all day looks so easy
15ish I love the sound it sounds good it
feels really good too stries sound
really solid give me a couple
more that’s nice that’s super neutral
there it’s impressive yeah it is good
it’s really nice and it’s playing down
closer to 17° we said
mhm all right Mikey boy good uh good
performance with the easy find the
hybrid that’s a Gil thing this thing
looks very
good that has no business what it just
did I Scrapy
yeah really
nice love that
flight
no good strike just a little the path is
with the path yeah
that’s yeah nice
adjustment I Tau myself this little
pause thing at the
top sometimes it
works right that’s that’s good looking
pretty good with that okay let’s uh
let’s see some of the big stick hey this
driver looks bigger than 460c and I know
it’s not but you know confidence
inspiring is great it sits upright which
I like the look of a driver that that
sits up uppr but super super Square
yeah pretty good certainly low or low is
on the spin there yeah I was right off
the top of the crown okay pretty good 16
La 17 spin lost the ball speed on the
high
strike very high and dynamic L angle
like you said quite good for you that
starts at a little bit more left anyone
who struggles with the left start line
very low in spin isn’t it yeah but 14
launch it 16 like 16 might look low but
i’ take 1, 1600 over 9,000 RPMs of
spin which is the normal 1,700 over
3,300
yeah good you okay that’s I mean I’m I’m
K more look at launch conditions like
spin didn’t get away from you there at
all still get out there 270
14 137 at
21100 good really good all right Mikey
boy um pretty pretty much green lights
impressive across the board yeah the
little hybrid was so easy for you to hit
those numbers are Immaculate speed ball
speed off that hybrid was good yeah look
at the standard deviation on on spin so
tight really good sort of carry not a
lot of roll out which is what we want
Freewood is starting to tick up and
speed a little bit 14 launch 3200 again
right in that nice window and that’s
definitely higher spin than the three
that I currently I kind of see like 2800
and lower launch but yeah to get 230 out
of it was nice now we are obviously uh
turning the Loft down on all of these
trying to kind of keep it the launch and
spinning the windows where you like it
so it just for for players who want more
spin or players of lesser Speed play at
standard you for sure absolutely fine um
St Max driver 147 14 launch 1900 you
really wear max out on those launch
conditions yeah there were some high
launch low spinners out there which is
nice yeah um yeah definitely definitely
a good driver it it’s confidence
boosting it’s it’s bigger which is nice
it’s not bigger it’s still 460 but it
looks bigger maybe he was expecting a
fraction more ball speed out of it like
I hit it a couple decent ones and I hit
a couple like squirly ones yeah um so it
would be interesting to compare maybe
the you know all the Muno drivers
together and see if there is a ball
speed drop from from the max but good
driver for sure definitely more upright
goes a little bit more to the left which
I like one thing I normally see with
modern golf clubs when you stray high in
the head the ball speed is the first
thing to go you’ll maximize in the
launch conditions as you did here uh you
know good launch and spin had your
little kind of fade flight going really
really nice but but yeah that’s that’s a
little bit less on ball speed than we
would normally see you at but I do think
it’s a byproduct of the high spin I I do
think it it probably comes out in the
you know in the wash a little bit in
terms of the the distance that it goes
you could hit it a little bit lower in
the face you could get the ball speed
into the the
150s uh but I don’t think you’ll launch
it as high and you won’t spin it as low
so you know in terms of a tradeoff it’s
it’s performing uh really really nicely
vosch said something
really great about these St Max this St
Max line and he he basically said
without retaining the characteristics
the high performance characteristics of
these clubs a few points in Moi are
irrelevant really we’ve been saying that
about these high Moi 10K whatever you
know these sort of clubs are we’ve been
saying that for basically since the
start of the
Season being a 10K driver is no good if
it’s if it it’s not the right driver for
you yeah that’s why they have to
ultimately be fit that’s why they still
have to have all the performance and
design characteristics core Tech you
know that we’ve got in uh in this line
you know lots and lots of other things
baked into it you we can pull Center
gravity back and we can make it really
really high Moi but it it it’s not the
be all and end all that’s not the F no
for sure I would say for for all the
higher Moi stuff that I’ve looked at or
we’ve tested Ed or I’ve hit personally I
would say this goes in my opinion neck
and neck with a pxg um above the other
highi drivers I like the look of it the
Cosmetics are are nice it doesn’t look
like maybe it’s an ego thing it doesn’t
look like a you know that game
improvement hooded claw you know big old
driver it’s big for sure but it it’s
very Sleek it looks like I mean anyone
could use this driver which is nice well
it’s interesting you should say that
about where it ranks in in your order
because cuz you are going to test it in
a high Moi bracket yeah yeah great so
we’re going to have Qi 10 Max we’re
going to have ping 10K we’re going to
have this we’re going to have Black Ops
um any of them that are considered in
this Super highi Range we’re all going
to we’re going to put them against one
another we we’ve done it in the bracket
we’ve done in the 100 m hour bracket
with yam and uh this will be a fun one
for you to do yeah let see see what
comes out on top let’s see okay good
stuff all right guys hope you enjoyed
this um we bit late to the party with
the St Max review but it was well worth
the wait really really impressed with
this line I personally think it’s my
favorite line to date from is you know
from a a an overall looks and
performance standpoint um I think from a
wide consumer standpoint that this is
probably the the line I would say would
appeal to the most people that Muno have
ever uh came out with it certainly my
time absolutely love this I love the
versatility I love the adjustability I
think it’s absolutely fantastic I think
they’ve really nailed the looks of them
as well I think they look really sharp
like it home home run with it definitely
great stuff okay hi Moi tank bracket
coming to you guys soon stay tuned for
more and we’ll be back again soon

  1. Good video. Thanks for doing it. Loving the ST-Z 230 right now and would like to see a comparison to the Max. Maybe the fairways too.

  2. I have the ST-Max 3wood with the kaili blue shaft and might actually hit it too high with too much spin off the deck. I have a ping 425 5w with the kaili white that launches with a flatter traj. Most hits, both clubs carry about the same, unfortunately. Experimenting with the 3w to lower launch and spin, but may end up picking up kaili white profile shaft for it.

  3. Love Mizuno irons. Would love to see the rest of the lineup get to the same level of quality some day as well

  4. Would love to see this driver up against ZX5 Mkii LS. Seems like those two are the kings of forgiving LS drivers. Maybe throw TSr2 in there too

  5. Great video and agree on all counts. I saw similar results with slightly less efficiency than others but it made up for it with the high launch and low spin like Ian said.

Please include the TSR2 in the bracket. I don’t think many consider it in the high MOi category but it definitely is. That and the ST-Max were the best overall performers in my fitting.

  6. I too was just fitted and bought the driver. It out performs my TSR2. Distance is comparable to my Paradym Triple Diamond. I will be trying the 3 and 5 woods and definitely the hybrids.

  7. Just purchased the ST Max Driver it’s incredible so easy to hit, and long, looks and feels phenomenal love it

  8. Mikey, you should sound just a little bit more excited that you are going to test the Mizuno in a high MOI driver bracket. It's not the end of the world. Keep the boss happy.

  9. I have the three wood. Wow. Came from a StealthRocket at 13.5. This set at 14 is equal in carry distance and significantly easier to tag off fairway. From the tee it is same total to Stealth and so easy to go after one. It’s time to try that hot hybrid!

  10. I’ve been waiting for this one. I can’t wait for the high MOI bracket. This year the Mizuno ST Max driver and fw interest me as much as the Ping G430 diver and fw lineup. I wish the Taylormade Qi10 fw was adjustable. That’s a non starter for me.
