Mighty Ducks Ty web from cattyshack
you’ll even see George castanza
assistant to the traveling secretary for
the New York Yankees Benny the jet
Rodriguez from The Sandlot I mean the
list goes on and on so these are
amazingly creative cards brilliant
artwork by the artist Kyler Smith we’re
going to dig into it also another reason
I wanted to talk to Kyler is because
Lefty and I actually bought some CS off
of eBay from Kyler Smith and they were
Ted lasso cards and we saw a selling
marker for Ted lasso cards and a lot of
people made money on eBay flipping Kyler
Smith art cards of fictional athletes
like these of Stanley Sugarman and Bo
Cruz so I’m not sure what I’m going to
do with mine I don’t I don’t really have
a selling marker in mind I did want to
support Kyler Smith but I think there’s
actually a lot of opportunity on the
secondary Market to pick and choose
relevant fictional athlete cards and
flip them at selling markers so have you

all right let’s get into our top five
cards to buy raw and grade but first I
want to talk about the theme of this
week’s top five cards to buy raw and
grade and that is thinking ahead to
summer events and I’m going to give you
a little bit of an example because this
weekend was the Masters and I had a ton
of fun watching the masters with friends
and family texting about the Masters and
watching Scotty sheffler win it and I
prepared for this I prepared for this I
bought this Scotty sheffler 2017 SI for
kids cards in PSA 5 it’s his only
investable card he doesn’t have upper
deck cards he’s got two total cards
Sheffer does he’s got a 2017 Sports
Illustrated for kidss card University of
Texas and then he’s got a 2019 Sports
Illustrated for Kids card that’s worth
nothing but his rookie card from 2017 SI
For Kids
magazine is worth something in fact I
bought it in PSA 5 for about
$110 sometime during the golf off season
or what what I can what I consider the
golf offseason the golf down season in
the hype cycle that is the Hobby and
that was around October November last
year when I was talking to my guy Mike
lusta of fondling cardboard he’s the
Golf Card Collector on Instagram and he
was pushing me to get a golf card and
this was the first golf card that I ever
bought and I bought it with a selling
marker in mind everybody and that
selling marker was the Masters and so I
listed it for sale to end on Saturday
night and I didn’t wait till Sunday I I
I listed it to end on Saturday night why
because while Sheffer was the favorite
going in um I needed to list this in a
10day auction and I didn’t know how well
he was gonna play and so I listed the
Scotty sheffler SI for kids card from
2017 in PSA 5 very low pop count for an
opening big bit of $99 because I was
$110 into it so I didn’t want to get
totally screwed over I wanted to take a
little bit of a risk but not too much of
a risk and so I pit people up against
each other in an eBay auction during the
Masters ending on Saturday night hoping
Sher would be the leader going into
Sunday sure enough he was clinched it on
Sunday and this card sold for
$177 on 20 bids guys total net profit
after eBay fees and everything
$43 so I was thinking ahead I was
thinking ahead with a selling marker in
mind and I really want to help you guys
do the same thing so I’m not just going
to sit here and tell you guys about my
greatness I’m going to help you be great
so let’s get into the top five cards to
by raw and
grade right now top five sports card
opportunities to buy raw and grade we
need to start thinking about the top
cards to sell in the summer big events
even though this is our top five we
actually have six events to look at
thanks in part to something that happens
only once every four years and another
special event that features a return of
one of the top athletes in his or her
sport so we’re going to jump into what
the formula is and then break down data
from the formula which you can now get
by the way as a premium member at noof
season.com the formula is an Roi that
stands for return on investment for
those of you new to the sports card
strategy show it’s a Roi probability
tracker formula that we created and it
tells us where to focus it’s that simple
it tells us where to focus so the more
cards we can run through this formula
the better we can make our sports card
flipping decisions what’s interesting is
that while we only run the right cards
for the right players at the right time
through the formula and they all have
selling markers in course of course the
way that this is set up is so that you
don’t actually need a selling marker to
make money this way because the way the
formula works is in this case what we’re
running through on today’s show the top
five sports card opportunities to buy
raw in grade so it takes realtime data
of sales of raw PSA 10 and everything
below that it takes the grading cost it
takes the gem rate and it factors all of
that in and then it tells us how many of
each card would you need to buy in order
to profit x amount for it and that’s how
we get our projected Roi so we’re going
to jump
into the top five sports card
opportunities to buy right now raw and
grade so that you have enough time to
get them back and oh by the way you
should make money on them anyway without
the selling marker but the good news is
all of these have selling markers in the
summer so let’s talk about it all right
one that we know happens every single
summer every June is the NBA Finals it’s
next to imposs possible to predict
what’s going to happen in the NBA Finals
especially in April but the Knicks are
the number two seed and Jaylen Brunson
is on fire so we have to look at him
because if New York does win the NBA
championship or even make it to the NBA
finals it would be Jaylen brunson’s
cards that go to the moon so Jaylen
brunson’s 2018 prism silver 250
Raw goes for about $35 right now now it
has according to the formula at noof
season.com a
51% projected Roi that’s
outstanding so the target raw cost is
going to be between 35 and even $40 to
make money using the formula PSA 10’s
selling for around 220 there’s a 39% gem
rate so it’s not a great gem rate but
the average sale price taken all the
factors into account that you would need
to buy 32 of these cards and you would
need to have
$1,961
62 to make $1,000
profit that gives us an average price
that you would sell these for across all
the grades that you would get back from
PSA of
$15.12 so in order to make $1,000 on
this Jaylen Brunson 2018 prism silver
250 you would need 32 of them if you’re
solely just looking to do it with this
card and in order to buy 32 of them
grade them and all that your total
all-in cost would be
$1,616 you would make $1,000 as soon as
you got them back now the Market’s going
to fluctuate a little bit but we’ve
taken that into account in our formula
the other thing we take into account in
our formula is a modifier for how old
the card is and of course all of your
fees all all of your fees your eBay fees
and everything else your grading fees
and everything like that but I will say
this everybody beware buying the PSA 10
of this card because the PSA 10 of this
card is a negative card on our formula
it’s up about 55% over the last 90 days
all right another event that’s happening
in the summer which does not happen
every summer in fact it only happens
every four Summers is the Summer
Olympics in Paris let’s talk about it
what’s been on fire recently women’s
basketball women’s Hoops is on fire

matter Sabrina as we’re going to refer
to her has some of the bestelling
basketball sneakers regardless of gender
men everywhere boys basketball players
in middle school high school they’re
rushing to the shelves they’re rushing
to Goat they’re rushing to nike.com
they’re going everywhere dicks my son
picked up a pair of these sneakers at
Dicks Sabrina is
transcending gender in terms of sneaker
sales which is huge Sabrina also took on
Steph Curry in the Three-Point Contest
at the 2024 NBA All-Star weekend she
also plays in the New York Market
he is a top player
name brand now on the 2024 USA Women’s
Basketball team let’s talk about her
2020 prism WNBA silver card 89 according
to the formula at noof season.com this
card has a
36% projected Roi so your target raw
cost of this card is $66 PS a 10 if you
can somehow get a PSA 10 it only has a
177% gem rate boys and girls but if you
can somehow get a PSA
10
$526 that’s probably why it sells in
psa1 for $526 because it is only a 177%
gem rate nevertheless across all the
grades you’re likely to get buying this
card raw and Grading at PSA you’re still
likely to sell this card on an average
sale price for $148 per the formula
which means you would need 32 of them
and you would need $
27686 to make $1,000 we use $1,000 kind
of as our Baseline here if you just want
to go all in on one particular card of
course we’re not saying that you need to
go all in on one particular card you can
spread it all out you don’t need to buy
32 Sabrina Iona SCU uh 220 prism WNBA
silver cards to make $1,000 you can buy
all kinds of cards but what the form
form helps you do everybody is it helps
you prioritize it helps you focus
because if you go look at the formula at

and you’ll find it by just going to the
sportscard rankings page and clicking on

formula based rankings check them all

now you can go there and you can pick
and choose any of the top ones it’s all
sorted by your projected Roi you’re not
likely going to be able to find 32
Sabrina ionu WNBA prism Silvers from
2020 it’s going to be hard to do but
this is what the formula tells you and
it tells you where to focus which is the
most important thing all right another
summer selling marker which I’ve been
fascinated
with and oh you can bet there’s going to
be articles coming at noof season.com
soon on this the NBA Summer League every
year in July
someone’s cards from the NBA Summer
League blow up like at least four or
five cards of guys who are playing in
the summer league blow up now much like
the NFL backup quarterback strategy it’s
a little bit hard to buy a ton of guys
for the NBA Summer League and wonder if
they’re going to blow
up
but what’s smart is to look at guys that
you would buy anyway who could
potentially play in the NBA Summer
League and if you run them through the
formula which we’ve done at noof
season.com you can find some pretty sick
opportunities to buy raw and grade right
now and the number one opportunity
really on this whole top five list is
actually Brandon Miller’s 2023 prism
silver 152 78% projected Roi Target raw
cost of
$60 in PSA 10 it’s selling for
$230 it has a 75% gem rate a 75% gem
rate but even if you don’t gem
it you only need 16 of these and you
only need
$1,277 60 to make
$1,000 and its average sale price across
all grades is $180 according to the
formula so this is a good one this is
this is the best one from a basketball
standpoint by far there’s one from a
football standpoint we’ll get to at the
end of this list which is pretty sick
but Brandon Miller number two pick in
the 2023 NBA
draft flashed as a rookie another rookie
the number three pick in the 2023 NBA
draft we haven’t talked about this guy
that much on the sports card strategy
show that’s scoot Henderson scoot
Henderson’s 2023 prism 141 silver
has a 49% projected Roi according to the
formula if you buy it raw for 20
bucks it has a 57% gem rate in gem in
PSA 10 it sells for
$102 the average sale price across all
grades you’re likely to get back would
be $76 which means you need 50 of these
so you need a heck of a lot more of
these than you do of Brandon Millers you
only need 16 Brandon Millers and you
only need to spend $1,227 7 to make a
thousand on Millers you need 50 of
scoots but the good news is because his
card sells for a third of the price raw
as Brandon Miller you only need
$2,317 to get 50 scoot Henderson prism
silver raw and you’d make a$ thousand
dollar according to the formula now why
are we talking about Brandon Miller and
Scoot Henderson in relation to the NBA
Summer League isn’t it just rookies who
play in the summer league no no no my
friends it’s not just rookies in fact
Keegan Murray the fourth overall pick in
2022 jayen Ivy the fifth overall pick in
2022 and Jaylen durren the 13th overall
pick in 2022 all played as sophomores in
the 2023 summer league and of course
they all played as rookies in the 2022
summer league so I would not be shocked
to see some of the names even like haime
hakz Brandon pod zimsky out of Golden
State we’re going to run those those
guys through the formula you beta and
we’re going to write about them at noof
season.com as the summer league
approaches so guys great time to buy
Scoot and Brandon Miller look at scoots
prism silver is even down
53% so that’s pretty solid pretty solid
Buy in there I think it’s a good time to
get these guys and again you know on the
sports card strategy show if you’re new
to the
show then you don’t know that I mean
we’ve always been pretty darn good and
methodical and
had a Rhyme or Reason we’ve had
guidelines strategies and plays we say
only buy the right card for the right
player at the right time and we explain
that and we also say only buy with a
selling marker in mind and we say go
where they ain’t and we’re still doing
all of those things that’s how we decide
what cards to even put in the formula in
the first place but now if you’re coming
in New
just so you know like we’ve never had
the formula before so we used to say
things like well scoot Henderson looks
like a good buy because he’s 53%
down and you could sell him in October
when there’s hype for the NBA season
starting back up
again and of course you could sell him
in the summer league right if he plays
in the summer league if he plays in the
summer league we don’t know if he will I
think he should personally I think that
the summer league league is something
that the NBA should continue to
encourage all of its young freshmen and
sophomores and even just guys who are
young that are older than that that
maybe bounce back and forth between the
G league and the NBA on two-way
contracts they might be three four five
year guys in the NBA they should all be
playing in the summer
league and I think the NBA will continue
to promote it I’ve seen it grow in
popularity I have a little bit of an
inside track in the NBA because of my
past work experience there with the
Detroit Pistons so we used to say scoot
Henderson’s prism silver
2023 is down 53% so you should buy it
because there’s sell markers coming up
and he’s the third overall pick in the
2023 draft we used to say things that
way now we run everything through the
formula as well so let’s talk about the
next Summer Event the next summer event
that we know happens every year is the
MLB allstar game
so the other thing I like about the
formula
that it brings us that we didn’t
always think to look in these places is
you know it’s baseball season right now
you know I think before the formula I’ll
speak for myself I was a little scared I
was a little timid I was a little
worried to try to go where people
already were I.E baseball cards on April
15th like I I never would have done that
before the formula so I’m grateful for
the formula because when you’re looking
at especially when you’re looking at
cards to BU raw and grade you learn
things from it you learn things like
Aaron judges 2017 tops 287
base has a 38% projected Roi based on
the formula that’s crazy especially on
April 15th I never would have even
thought to look at Aaron judge Aaron
judge had a three Dinger yesterday
against the Guardians and he’s Aaron
judge you know he’s he’s typically an
oddson favorite to bat second third or
fourth for the AL as a starter in the
All-Star game that’s why we’re looking
at the MLB allstar game here not
anything Aaron judge really needs to do
that’s out of the ordinary you can get
this 2017 Topps 287
base raw for 15 bucks that’s your target
raw cost PSA 10 selling for 93 bucks
gem rate 54% even for a card from 2017
so we got a little modifier in there in
the formula of course because it’s from
2017 but you need 73 of these fuers to
make ,000 but it’s a base card highly
printed and when you’re at noof
season.com looking at the formula you
can actually click the cards in the in
the table and it’ll take you to the
active eBay listings for the card and
there’s a lot of these cards available
so we’re picking cards that are AV
available relevant selling markers based
on the formula buy raw to grade at PSA
you need 73 of these you need $
2627 to make $1,000 all right the other
guy the other big name let’s go to the
the national
league is it weird to say go to the
national league and talk about Sho Otani
I’m used to it already otani’s betting
338 with four homers and 10 RB he’s
heating up as NBA Jam would say
39% projected
Roi per the formula now normally we
would be like well wait a minute like
this is a pop 20,000 card basically and
that’s a little hyperbole but it’s
pretty close to that in PSA 10 but you
can buy this card raw for 60 bucks PSA
10’s selling it’s always selling well
this card always sells well in PSA 10
the 2018 Topps Chrome 150 base pitching
okay that’s the card we’re talking about
it always sells well in PSA 10 selling
for 160 bucks it’s it has an 89% gem
rate also so that’s that’s amazing so
buying this card raw 60 bucks not cheap
but you can sell it in PSA 10 for 160
89% gem rate average sale price means
$141 so you need 32 of these and you
need $2,600 total to make a th000 that’s
what the formula tells us show otan
base 2018 Topps Chrome 150 pitching 39%
projected Roi on that card so we like
that card all
right what else do we know happens
during the summer that every summer is
like the biggest thing it’s NFL training
camp you know if you’ve ever been to the
National or if you’ve ever consumed
content covering the national typically
you’ll hear everyone in agreement that
people are looking for the biggest
quarterbacks at the national you know
you talked to vendors who sell at the
national and there’s a lot of vendors do
very well at the national regardless of
what they bring memorabilia vintage
baseball vintage hockey there’s even
people that sell only Japanese ultra
modern baseball cards like it can get
very Niche at the national right but the
number one thing in Late July whether
you’re at the national or not is NFL
quarterbacks and the top NFL
quarterbacks and I’m on the record I’m
on the record as saying I think one of
the top three hottest names in The Hobby
and we’ll look at this in sales volume
on the market report shows that we’re
dropping daily on the sports card
strategy feed Jordan love he’s going to
be one of the top three his 2020 optic
Hollow 154
raw 83% projected Roi per the formula
83% Target raw cost $50
PSA 10 selling for 213 that’s probably a
fraction of what it’s going to sell for
actually in September by the way but
you’d get this card back easily by July
BEC even if you take the April Sports
special at PSA which is going to take 50
days at least you’ll still get it back
by July sell it in Late July if you
don’t want to wait for the actual
selling marker which is probably
sometime closer to to early September
for a guy like Jordan love that’s
fine you only need 17 of these cards and
$1,200 to make a th000 because it’s a
83% projected Roi this card has a 64%
gem rate
people optic Hollow
raw Jordan love I can’t believe this
card raw is only $50 I can’t believe it
so go try to find you some a lesser
option who would have thought I would
say Brock pie would be a lesser option
than Jordan love but Brock P’s 2022
prism silver
353 has a 47% projected Roi so a little
bit more math people a little bit more
math and we’re getting that much better
at what we do at no off season.com and
here on the sportscard strategy
show because again if you’ve been with

right Brock 30 prism silver probably
would have trumped Jordan Love’s optic
Hollow not today not per the formula 47%
projected Roi for Brock P’s 2022 prism
silver 353 raw it cost you 240 bucks to
get that card it does sell in PSA 10 for
735 it does have a 54% gem rate which is
pretty darn good for a prism silver
that’s pretty darn good for a prism
silver in the last few years considering
some of the ones from
2021 Brock P’s in 2022 average sale
price you’d be looking at across all
grades that you’re likely to get back
480 bucks so you’re likely to double
your money there um you need eight of
these you need eight of these and
$225 to make a thousand so that’s
outstanding that’s it’s an outstanding
card even though it’s it’s half the
projected Roi of Jordan love
so so far we’ve gone
through we’ve already gone through like
basically 10 cards this was supposed to
be the top five sometimes it’s like top
five this top five that like just to get
everyone’s attention but there’s like a
top 10 so we’ve already we’ve already
gone through about 10 cards and we’re
going to go to our next one here it’s
based on another Summer Event that’s
starting to happen every summer that our
guy Chase Crim from Texas Road Show shop
told us about basically clued us into
the fact that there’s a big UFC fight
every summer and he also clued us into
the fact that Conor McGregor is likely
making his return to the
sport after a devastating
injury and he is because Dana White just
this past weekend announced the return
of Conor McGregor officially at UFC 303
versus Michael Chandler on June 29th the
fight will take place with each fighter
weighing in at 170 pounds Conor
McGregor has a lot of cards he has a lot
of cards but he doesn’t have a huge
Market because UFC doesn’t have a huge
market so Conor McGregor has a
significant Market but he doesn’t have a
huge Market compared to anyone else
really that we’ve discussed on today’s
show other than Scotty sheffler and
Sabrina iosu all right I know I’m
probably saying Sabrina’s last name
wrong I don’t really care that much
Sabrina Connor Scotty all fit in a

to know that market like the back of

thanks for having me this is awesome
absolutely tell us briefly about
yourself what you do why you do it and
your familiarity with the sports card
hobby exactly so uh my name is Kyler
Smith I’m a freelance illustrator been
doing it for a couple decades now I’ve
always kind of been uh influenced by
entertainment and sports um regarding
the hobby I actually collected cards
with my dad growing up uh in the late
80s uh early 90s uh and I was always
just really inspired uh you know
obviously by the card design but also
you would have those Illustrated cards
um those are always my favorite and
actually those are the ones that I
started to draw from uh and it’s kind of
funny that it’s kind of been full circle
around uh but I’ve been working with
some pop culture galleries um here in La
uh and for a show I just decided to do a
a trading card uh of Tom hes of uh Jimmy
Dugan from a league of our own a league
of your own and uh from there it I
didn’t think it would take off and just
kind of became popular so I ended up
doing uh a few shows and I would do a
show uh once a year with like 40 to 50
cards and we’d put them in packs um and
I’ve just been enjoying creating them
and now I’m up to over 250 trading cards
and looking forward to doing some more I
became familiar with your work while
researching whether or not our audience
could make money flipping cards of
fictional athletes and come to find out
not only do you make amazingly detailed
custom illustration cards of fictional
athletes like Jimmy Dugan and sports
rated characters as well like George
castanza assistant to the traveling
secretary for the New York Yankees but
they sell well initially and they sell
well on secondary marketplaces like eBay
can you talk about your process when
conceiving the cards you create and what
the go to market process looks like for
you exactly I mean there’s always as as
a movie buff myself um there’s always
those go-tos um that you know everyone
kind of wants as a staple uh and I I
enjoy doing those uh but I think some of
the ones that uh I I’m I’m I enjoy the
most in terms of creating are the ones
that people aren’t expecting uh you know
take for example like the George
castanza uh that was like the the first
one where I kind of went outside the box
a little bit I was like I’m going to I’m
going to see how well this plays and
from there it it’s kind of been a fun
challenge of trying to find kind of like
pop culture characters that everyone
knows and loves that probably wouldn’t
expect to have a trading card uh and
then finding fun little creative ways to
put like story moments and nods uh to
maybe that particular episode or that
movie uh for that character but in terms
of the process uh they’re all handdrawn
sketches uh using pencil and then I
shrink them down I color them ually um
put all the designs on them uh and then
come up with like a a quote and just
like a brief summary uh for the
back I think there are some main reasons
other art cards don’t really sell well
in the hobby I think one being a lack of
quality two being I think mass
production and three being a lack of
Licensing how do you address these three
factors to ensure your work stays
desirable exactly so what what I like to
do is I try to make sure that each card
is is better than the next uh and it’s
been a fun Journey you know doing this
for you know over like seven years now
um and constantly challenging myself and
you know going through and doing some
things like lenticular cards foil cards
um it it’s really fun to to see how far
you can push it and um I have a great
relationship with with my printer and
and we’re really you know creating some
really fun creative ways to um top each
one that we do and and for me it’s kind
of finding those cards that I wish I
always had so I just have as much fun as
creating them and just knowing that
they’re received the way that they are
that just lights my fire and just wants
me to you know keep creating you know
better and better cards uh so that
that’s kind of why I do it uh and then
usually they’re they’re really low
additions uh which is good we try to
keep them that way uh every once in a
while we’ll do Like A Time release
through the gallery depending on the
card uh but most of them are all limited
edition they’re all U numbered and
signed on the back as well and so when
do they get to your website at kylers

for people to be able to buy online is
that after the gallery I I I work with a
gallery called Gallery 1988 um here in
LA and that’s where we’ll have like the
shows and some special releases so once
the Edition has sold out with the
gallery um then I have artist proofs
which are my own personal copies which
is a low edition of like 15 to 20
depending on the addition size uh that I
sell on my own personal
website and do do you ever get licensing
from uh movie or TV studio or the
individuals licensing themselves for the
actor actress personality things like
that how does that part work yeah so
it’s a little bit yes and no like uh I
started I didn’t have all the licensing
but with that it’s in the exposure it
has led to working with uh Studios uh
doing some marketing for specific films
and movies uh and then like we had
talked about before this interview
there’s there’s a lot of things that
unfortunately can’t talk about yet but
there’s some really fun licensing uh
products that are coming down um in
different genres and avenues that I’m
excited to share once everything gets
green lit that’s
awesome I think you talked about the
limited print run a minute ago and
personal serial numbering of sorts uh
with your signature I think that’s key
and definitely resonates with our
audience I think a fourth Factor why
some cards don’t sell as well is lack of
relevancy and relatability your work is
easily the most relatable and relevant
that I’ve ever seen and so I want people

Cru that I bought from the movie Hustle
I just love how do you make such amazing
fun and relevant choices to make your
card so
desirable it it is really a a a it it I
would say it could be hard at times but
really when I when I find something that
I personally would love a card of and
I’m inspired to create something uh I
find that happening like more and more
these days and trying to find those
Avenues where like you know Sports
movies I always love growing up you know
just because you know they’re uplifting
and the stories are great whether
they’re true or fictional right um and
when when I’m able to create art that
kind of corresponds with the
entertainment that I love at the same
time that marriage and trying to find a
way to to put my connection with it into
it uh and finding a way to where that
connects with the audience um that’s
kind of like my go-to uh but then you
know as far as finding which ones to do
I like to have surprises um and and
trying to keep the audience guessing on
like kind of which cards would come next
than ones that they probably haven’t
thought of uh so after doing this for
several years there’s several fans that
always kind of update and you’ll get all
these suggestions on social media which
is fantastic where they’re like hey you
should do this card you should try this
one um and then you know always kind of
have like a running list that I that I
work from uh but then also kind of
coming back in and throwing some of
those surprises is is the funnest part
for me that is super fun and earlier we
mentioned scarcity in terms of why your
cards are so desirable as well to that
point other than going to the store tab

basically how do we get your cards first
is that possible yeah so I mean it’s
always when when they release through
through the gallery but the the best way

always give uh as much time ahead notice
as I can of of when certain items will
