hey real quick I just want to premise
this video by saying I had a podcast
called faith in football however it
eventually transitioned over to being
the Stay Focus podcast in the beginning
I interviewed guys like Chris brousard
Charlie Ward uh taquan Tyler and Charles
Hitchens from my hometown and most
recently Andy Isabella but I did want to
continue the series so now I’m going to
make it like a solo thing where we kind
of dive into the athletes we talk about
their career their ACC blades and of
course the faith so let me know who you
want to see next if you like what you
see in this video drop a comment down
below let me know which athlete you want
us to dive into it can be any sport
football basketball baseball soccer
hockey you know I’m down for whatever so
let me know who you want to see next in
the comments below Scotty Sheffer is
currently the number one golfer on the
PGA tour and by the looks of it he’s
going to be there for a while he’s held
the number one ranking for 83 weeks
dating back all the way to March of
2022 right before his first Master’s win
in this video we’re going to take a look
at Scotty through the years and of
course the most important aspect of this
whole series which is his faith when
Scotty was just seven years old he began
working with professional golf coach
Randy Smith he credited him with
teaching him pretty much everything he
knows about Golf and said Randy always
made golf fun which allowed him to stay
loose while playing man obviously that
paid off because Scotty would then go on
to attend Highland Park High School in
Dallas Texas the same school that
produced Talent like Clayton Kershaw
Matthew Stafford and he ended up winning
three state championships in a row from
2012 to 2014 tying a record previously
set by Jordan spe and just like SP he
would then go on to attend the
University of
Texas where he would go on to help that
team win three big 12 championships
while also winning a few individual
Awards including the Phil Michelson
freshman of the Year award in
2015 while in college as an amateur
Scotty qualified for his first US Open
in
2016 he shot 69 the first round however
he would end up missing the cut by one
stroke because of a second round 78 if
you don’t know par is usually around
72 and so you’re trying to go below that
you’re trying to shoot under 72 ideally
um so anything above that is called
overpar um but yeah we’ll get into the
rules of golf later I just want to let
y’all know that the following year he
will go on to make the cut at the US
Open and would be the low amateur at one
under par after turning pro in 2018 he
would play on the corn fairy tour for a
year winning both rookie and Player of
the Year Awards in
2019 after that he received his tour
card through qualifying school and was
officially a PGA Tour golfer he went on
to have a great Rook R season finishing
fourth at the PGA Championship and
notably shooting a 12 under 59 at the
Northern Trust tying the second lowest
score in PGA tour history he would go on
to win Rookie of the Year as well
setting the tone for his future as a
staple in this game in 2021 he was a
member of the Ryder Cup team going 2 and
one in the US victory over
Europe fast forward to
2022 after a few wins at the Phoenix
Open the Arnold Palmer Invitational in
the WGC he was officially named the
number one golfer in the world following
that in April of the same year he would
go on to win his first major getting his
first green jacket at the Masters he
would go on to win the PGA Player of the
Year 2023 he would defend his title at
the Phoenix and also go on to win the
PLAYERS Championship as well while he
was unable to win a major that year he
did finish top 10 at the Masters second
at the PG in third at the US Open Scotty
had 18 top 12 finishes and would go on
to win player of the year for the second
straight time fast forward to 2024 he
would win the Arnold Palmer Invitational
for the second time and follow that up
with his back-to-back Players
Championship
win of course most recently this past
weekend he just won his second green
jacket and is already looking like
another year that Scotty is able to stay
at top of the rankings and take home
some more Hardware I forgot to mention
this but he also married his high school
sweetheart Meredith um in 2020 so that’s
super dope and he’s expecting his first
child any day now so congratulations in
advance man glad that you didn’t get the
call during the Masters cuz obviously
you wouldn’t had a chance to win that
second green jacket so congratulations
all right so now let’s get into these
Faith reactions Scotty has always been
someone who’s been open about his faith
at least since he’s been on tour um one
of the things I like about them about
athletes period which is why I wanted to
start this whole series is that they’re
never asked or they’re usually not asked
directly about their faith they’re
usually asked like you know what went
into their confidence on the field or on
the course in this case um what went
into you know their ability to play or
something mental and then that’s when
they give all glory to God or Jesus
Christ and to me that says a lot about
their character because you know they’re
not asked directly about their faith but
it’s in it’s in their heart to bring it
up and that’s one thing that admire that
I admire about you know athletes in the
faith um people that are you know
playing a game that have a
platform um and when they’re asked a
question a simple question about you
know how they played or how they feel
about a certain thing they always um in
some cases anyway they give glory to
Jesus Christ and I think that’s a
beautiful thing thing so Scotty has been
um notably quoted as saying that you
know the way he plays doesn’t Define him
um the way he finishes if he has a bad
day but what defines him is Jesus Christ
dying on the cross for him and of course
for everyone that believes in him will
be saved um so yeah man let’s get into
it like I said Scotty is a number one
player in the world just won arguably
the biggest tournament in golf and this
is what he had to questions Kyle yes
Scotty I’m curious you you’ve talked a
lot about just your desire to compete
and how much that means to you how do
you balance that desire to to compete
and to immerse yourself in it without
letting it kind of Define who you are as
a person yeah I think that all goes back
to my faith you know the reason why I
play golf is because you know I’m trying
to glorify God and you know all that
he’s done in my life and so for me my
identity isn’t isn’t a golf score you
know like Mera told me this morning she
says if you win this golf tournament
today
um if you lose this golf tournament by
10 shots if you never win another golf
tournament again she goes I’m still
going to love you you’re still going to
be the same person Jesus loves you um
and nothing changes and all I’m trying
to
do is glorify God and that’s why I’m
here and that’s why I’m in this position
and so for me
um it’s not it’s not about a golf score
does that does that free you up in the
moment does it make you less nervous
100% you know I if if I was trying to
win this golf tournament when I was in
high school you know if my high school
School self was trying to win this golf
tournament I would have been a totally
different person out there on the golf
course you know every day when we go out
there Meredith always prays for peace
because that’s how what I want to feel
when I’m out there on the golf course I
want to feel peace and have fun and just
feel his presence and so um that’s her
prayer every day that’s my prayer and um
and I really felt that today I felt at
peace you know like I said when I when I
got to the golf course I I was pretty
much settled in just the morning that
was tough last question Marty so like
you know when we do things like in my
case I do music um or videos or whatever
sometimes we get caught up in the art we
get caught up in whether we’re
successful or not we get caught up in
numbers we get caught up in all these
things and you know the peace that we
have at the end of the day is knowing
that we’re doing it for God we’re giving
God glory regardless of how far we go um
you know in this field regardless of
what the numbers look like um you know
monetarily or you know how many views we
get um obviously everybody wants to be
successful but at the end of the day
we’re doing this to glorify God and to
have a platform you know that he’s on
right now um this is from his first
major win this is from his first Masters
so you know he’s he’s in the moment he’s
just got his Green Jacket obviously he’s
excited um he could have said a number
of things right there but he gave all
glory to God and I think that’s a
beautiful thing I really do let’s go to
the next one
can I follow up what do you think
defines you this is from this year I
think after the second round probably to
ask my wife
um no I
uh yeah I’m a faithful guy I believe in
in in a Creator believe in
Jesus ultimately I think that’s what
defines me the most um that’s it he said
it right there that’s what defines him
his belief and his faith in Jesus and
like I said he could have said anything
right there would finds you he could
have you know a lot of people would
given credit to their the way they’re
playing obviously he’s the number one
player in the world he’s already won a
green jacket at this point he’s had
numerous victories this year already but
instead he gave all glory to Jesus yeah
I feel
like I feel like I’ve given a plat been
given a platform to compete and you know
show my talent um it’s not anything that
I did you know I think I sat up here a
couple years ago doing the the interview
after the 2022 Masters and it’s like
yeah I was underprepared for what was
about to happen
I I didn’t know what was going to happen
I didn’t um you know I was very anxious
that morning I didn’t know what to
expect and
um it’s hard to describe the feeling but
I think that’s what defines me the most
is my faith you know I believe in one
Creator and I’ve been called to come out
here do my best compete and uh glorify
God that’s pretty much
it it’s like he he knows he knows he’s
just playing the game he knows you know
this is a talent that he has this is a a
platform that he’s been given obviously
he’s been given some abilities to play a
sport that he loves but at the same time
he doesn’t run off and you know glorify
himself he still gives glory to God and
sometimes even in Christian hip hop or
anything in this life sometimes we lose
that Focus um which is the whole reason
for my Ministry stay focused we always
got to stay focused on God because you
know if the one player in golf can stay
focused on God and give glory to God
then we should be able to as well and
again this is from this year’s after
after he won the Green
Jacket um and hoping ludvig would only
make a par um and so around this golf
course you have to stay aggressive um
you have to hit the right shots there’s
no way there’s no way around it out here
you can’t play too defensive and you
can’t play too aggressive you just got
to hit the right shots and um
fortunately today I was able to do that
Sean Martin um you said constantly that
your identity is not in your golf scores
um what is it about winning and
competing then that you find
satisfying you know that’s a really good
question I uh I was sitting around with
my buddies this morning I was I was a
bit overwhelmed because I told him I was
like I wish that I didn’t want to win as
badly as I did or as badly as I do I
think it would make the mornings easier
but I I love winning I hate losing I
really do and when you’re heing the
biggest moments when I’m sitting there
with a lead on Sunday I really really
want to win badly um um and my buddies
told me this morning you know my victory
was Secure on the cross and that’s um
that’s a pretty special feeling um to
know that I’m secure for forever and it
doesn’t matter you know whether or not I
win this tournament or if I lose this
tournament um you know my identity is
secure for forever James once again
saying you know his identity is not in
his ability to win it’s not in the green
jacket that he just won it’s not whether
he finishes first or last it’s his ID
identity is on the cross his identity is
in Jesus and once again he gave all
glory to Jesus right there and Shine the
Light once again while he has the light
on him and In This Moment In The Press
Room he gave all glory to God so man
once again hats off to Scotty man he
he’s definitely um one of the people
that you want to see at the number one
spot you know there’s a lot of golfers
out there um whether it be PGA or livv
um the live tour um that’s a whole
another story but he’s definitely
someone you want to see at the top he’s
definitely somebody you want to be given
a platform that’s going to speak on the
glory of God and you know Jesus dying on
the cross and resurrecting and dying for
our sins and obviously he’s a Believer
he identifies as a Christian obviously
um so yeah man it’s a beautiful thing
beautiful thing to see him at the top
right now and he’s been that way for
over uh two years now says 2022 so
hopefully he remains
there let’s go into another
one
um let’s
see speak let’s go into another one
right here could you just tell us a bit
about how much it features in your head
when you’re actually out there on the
course does it help you cope with the
sort of visites of the wind and things
like that or bad
breaks yeah I mean I I believe that
today’s plans were already laid out you
know many years ago and um I could do
nothing to mess up those plans you know
i’ I’ve been given given a a gift of
this talent and i’ I I use it for God’s
glory um that’s pretty much it so when
I’m out there I try to compete to the
best of my abilities like I said I
really want to win um I feel like that’s
how I was designed I’ve been that way
since I was a young kid um that’s always
been a part of me and I don’t think that
should be going away anytime soon and I
don’t believe there’s anything wrong
with that either but at the end of the
day like I said my identity is secure
already um and I get to come out here
and compete have fun enjoy it and then
at the end of the day win or lose my
identity secure Kyle and once again
obviously when you’re playing a sport
you know you want to be the best you
want to win um that’s really the whole
point in playing a sport or doing
anything is being successful at it
winning a championship um you know
obviously that’s what you practice for
that’s what you you work hard for and um
but even had having said that once again
he gives all glory to God and you know
he knows his identity isn’t in whether
he wins or loses he can still go home to
his wife and you know give all glory to
Jesus man and and once again it’s a
beautiful thing to see the number one
player in the world doing that Kyle how
much do you struggle with just the idea
of discontentment of of needing whether
it’s more wins More Money More Fame to
be satisfied and and when do you find
yourself most
content gosh that’s a good question
um I feel like playing professional golf
is an endlessly not satisfying career
um anything for for instance in my head
all I can think about right now is
getting home I’m not thinking about the
tournament I’m not thinking about the
Green Jacket I’m trying to answer your
questions I’m trying to get home um I
wish I wish I could soak this in a
little bit more maybe I will tonight
when I get home but at the end of the
day I think that’s what the human heart
does you always want more and
um I think you got to fight those things
and and focus on what’s good um because
like I said winning this golf tournament
does not change my identity my identity
is secure and I cannot cannot emphasize
that enough Kevin like he said man like
like I said before that’s with anything
we’ll never be satisfied whether you
know we’re chasing championships we’re
always going to want another
championship if you’re chasing money
you’re always going to want more money
or whatever it is you’re always going to
want more and like he said that’s our
human desire that’s desires of the Flesh
and it’s been said by many people that
you know no matter how many
championships they’ve won no matter how
much money they had that was the
Fulfillment the Fulfillment was knowing
that salvation was given us given to us
through faith in Jesus Christ and you
know it’s crazy that something that
seems so simple will be so fulfilling
but it truly is um without that you’ll
just be chasing um you know your whole
life for accolades and you know fleshly
desires fleshly worldly successes and no
matter how much you get you’re always
going to want more and so like he said
you’ll never be truly satisfied you know
you’ll never be truly satisfied but with
Jesus we can be pretty quick Adam let’s
go into one more Merith said you this
morning that helped you and on your way
to Victory today uh she just asked how
she could pray for me and I actually
wasn’t able to talk to her for very long
this morning which was unusual um but
you know she sent a lot of prayers my my
neck was bugging me a little bit and so
you know prayed for some healing and um
you know just prayed for for me to have
a lot of peace out there uh had a good
conversation with my buddies that were
here this morning about about Victory
and that Victory being secure
um so yeah yeah it was it it was a
longer morning again than anticipated
this year but I I I would say it wasn’t
as long as it was a couple years ago but
but still a long
morning this is dope man it’s really
cool to see like obviously having a wife
that will pray with you that’ll pray for
you is very important and you know you
can see why you know he stuck with her
you know all these years through high
school and to where he is now because
you know once you have a wife that will
support you not only in your you know
your career but spiritually as well um
that’s huge and so you can tell that
means a lot to him and you can tell it
really helped him you know he was
dealing with some anxiety some
nervousness and just by her praying for
him that really calmed him down um this
is from the previous Masters I was
sitting there was his first Masters
right here I was like I I don’t think
I’m ready for this you know I’m not
ready I I don’t feel like I’m ready for
this kind of stuff and I just felt
overwhelmed and so she told me who are
you to say that you’re not ready
um who who am I to say that I know
what’s best for for my life and so for
what we talked about is you know that
God is in control and you know the Lord
is leading me and um if today’s my time
then then it’s my time and if you know I
shot 82 today you know somehow I was
going to use it for his glory and
um gosh it was a long
morning it was long
you
call Yeah man so once again you know he
he knows that without God that you know
he wouldn’t feel the peace that he feels
and you know just knowing that you know
it could be his time and he just got to
you know let it play out you know go out
there and give it your best and see what
happens um obviously it worked out for
him and all glory to God man oh glory to
God congratulations Scotty I heard you
are a religious man uh see
direct play a significant part in this
victory yeah I’d say so you know like I
said earlier what what Merida told me
this morning is you know that that we’re
not in control of our lives and so I I
spoke a little bit
about you know what what playing golf
for me is like and and why I do it and
um you
know I mean my faith affects all aspects
of my life you know not just my life on
the golf course and so you know the Lord
has given me a skill and I’m trying to
use it for his glory and you know
outside of that I’m just out here trying
to do my best all right so if I left
anything out you know be sure to tell me
in the comments below I want to give a
brief summary on his playing career and
really focus in on what he had to say
about Jesus Christ and obviously the
Christian faith so like I said before if
you want to see an athlete a Christian
athlete that we can talk about that we
can react to that we can you know go
over their career as a as a player and
as a Christian you know drop their name
in the comments below I plan on on you
know dropping the episode every week um
like I said if y’all if y’all want to
see more content I try to stay
consistent with this I really enjoy
doing this I love obviously I love
sports uh obviously I love God so I love
you know doing this type of stuff I love
doing the interviews with players but if
I’m unable to get the the player you
know we can talk about them anyway so
definitely want to shine light on people
who give glory to God that have a
platform and are blessed with not only
Talent but giving all praises to Jesus
Christ so once again let me know who
y’all want to see next um stay focused
merchandise is available in an online
store I’ll put that description below be
on the lookout for my first Christian
hip hop album coming soon and stay
focused and God bless y’all
