here is Pete Cowen explaining chipping
and pitching he will discuss one short
game mechanics two chipping three
pitching four the 50 yard pitch five the
lob
shot right what we’re going to do today
is make you understand the pure
mechanics of the pitching the chipping
and without these you really won’t play
your short game too well so first of all
I’m going to tell you how the wrist
works in the actual pitching and
chipping action there’s four movements
in the wrist the wrist moves up down
side to side and I call that a wrist
a wrist down a hinge back and
a hinge forward and without
understanding the wrist movement you
won’t understand the mechanics of short
game now that we’ve shown you the wrist
movement what we’re going to do is show
you what happens to the club and if you
pick the club up every Club in your bag
No Matter What wants to fall to a
certain point it wants to fall to the
ground obviously gravity has a massive
effect on that but a club wants to fall
the ground all the time so when you’re
addressing the ball there’s two things
that stop the club going to Vertical
there’s the ground and your hand and of
course to start with as you move the
club off the ground all it wants to do
is return to the ground and even when it
gets parallel obviously it wants him to
fall to the ground but when it gets
Beyond parall and above parallel it also
wants to fall behind now that is where
most of the faults lie in poor pitching
and poor chipping actually trying to
resist the force and not use it so what
we’ve got to do as I turn sideways is
understand the movement of the club into
position and then understanding that
it’s going to fall this way and most
people unfortunately when the club
starts falling behind them they react
and you can see people’s knees move
forward and the hands move forward and
the club drop further behind you you’ve
now got no angle of attack you’ve really
got no movement to get the club back to
the ball other than a real manipulation
with the hands so it’s really important
that you understand these Natural Forces
because you won’t understand what’s
wrong with your pitching and chipping
unless you do right we’re going to talk
about basic chipping and basic chipping
is what I believe is that it actually
rolls more than it flights and for basic
chipping you should use a hinge movement
and no cocking action in the wrist as I
told you earlier that’s a wrist
that’s a down that’s hinge back and
hinge forward we want a hinge back
really and that’s all with the chipping
hinge back anding through so it rolls
very simply backwards and forwards so
it’s back and through it hinges
backwards and through simple rolling
action the left hand does very little a
subtle left hinge but a little bit more
right hinge here and take it take it
through to finish okay just a very
simple chipping action right what we’re
going to talk to you about now is a
basic pitch now pitch is one that
actually flights more more than it runs
so what happens here we want a little
bit of cocking in the actual action with
the chip we had all hinge with a pitch
It’s a combination of and the wrist
hinge so a combination so if you watch
very carefully as we go back that’s at a
point where there’s no real rist
and as we go beyond that first movement
then the wrist cut now we’re into the
pitching mode when the wrists cut with
that natural force wanted to fall we’ve
got to make sure we don’t react to that
we’ve got to move it into a position
where the club will fall down and allow
us the momentum Force to pick the ball
up so very simple pitch is move the club
through position so there’s no real
movement in the wrist until about
hip height then the wrist now as
we’re coming back we move the club back
into this natural force where it uncocks
so it’s a very s simple wrist RI
wrist un you know simple as that
really what I’m going to do now is talk
you through a 50 yard pitch and what I
like to do with a 50 yard pitch is have
a lot more control of the club so if I’m
hitting a 50 yard pitch I will probably
grip down at least 2 in on my 56 it’s
about control it’s about ball flight
control pitching is all about ball
flight control and that means
controlling your speed and your Loft so
for me 50 yards my 50 yard shot is a
basic half a turn which means half a
shoulder turn with my hands about ab AB
high just above my abs and between my
abs and my chest and I I know that that
with a 56 when I move to that position
that will give me a 50 yard pitch and
all I’ve got to use is momentum speed
with that I haven’t got to increase the
speed I’ve just got to use momentum
speed so when I set up slightly open
weight on my left side grip down two
Ines and now move my shoulders about
half a turn my hands with a little bit
of wrist reach just above my abs in
between my abs and my chest and from
there I’m allowing that club again to
fall with natural force and pick it up
with my body on the way through so that
will look a little bit like this so half
a turn with the ABS and
then from there we pitch it down about
50 yard
pitch use the bounce we going to talk
about now is lob shot really where the
ball goes up very very high and lands as
though it’s got a parachute on its back
and what we have to do with that is use
the Loft correctly and what I like to do
with the loft is I like to almost match
it to my right hand it’s especialist
shot so my right hand almost the more
Loft I have the more right hand I have
in position so if my loft is very open
my right hand’s more on top if my loft’s
down my right hand’s a little bit more
round so I match the bounce and the Loft
to my right hand so all the way through
I’m trying to keep my right hand in
position through impact which now allows
the left hand to what we call unhinge a
little bit through the impact not a lot
I don’t want to flick I want the left
hand to unhinge a little bit which
allows the club with momentum to go
under the ball so we get the right hand
on top and it comes down really Softly
