  1. IMO lake balls are fine as long as the urethane cover isn't bubbling up like a lot of them that I see. Also, any ball with structural damage, i.e. cracked mantles and split covers, is gonna fly weird.

  2. I could see a clear difference in the color of the outer layers cross section. That tells me the lake ball has been affected. Will it make a difference? Hard to say, but it's a lot easier to blame a bad shot on a lake ball than it is on a new ball.

  3. I would have liked to see you drop them onto a smooth concrete floor from your hand up over your head and see if they bounce back up to the same height as one another. Also, were the side stamps on the side exactly the same, or were these two balls, even if they were the same model, they could have been different versions manufactured years apart.

  4. Why would the inside be any different? Surely the outer cover is the most likely thing to be affected in used ball? (Especially after I’ve shanked it into the bushes a few times)

  5. The color difference may be from aging and a slight change in elastic properties. Drop from 6-8 feet and see if they bounce to the exact same height.

  6. Proper tests seem to show a drop in ball speed and spin rates as the cover is impacted by the water. Depends on how long its submeregd for of course, which you can never know. Just don't think it's worth risking good shots becoming crap ones simply because you want to save £1 on a ball.

  7. You haven’t “proved” anything. Robot testing indicates that lake balls perform less well in terms of ball speed and spin rates. So they’ll go less far off the tee and be more difficult to stop around the greens. The fact that they weigh the same means nothing except that they have dried out, it tells you nothing about resilience, elasticity etc.

  8. If the object of golf was to cut a ball in half and see if the ball has changed, this would be a great test.
