UTRGV Men’s Golf Set to Tee It Up at the All American Intercollegiate

HUMBLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team is set to tee it up at the 2024 All-American Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Houston and Rice University, starting on Monday at the Golf Club of Houston.

The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes being played on Tuesday. Play will begin each day with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m.

The Golf Club of Houston plays 7,425 yards and is a par 72. Individuals will play the Member Course which is 7,508 yards and is a par 72.

The Competition
There will be a 20-team field that will feature UTRGV, Houston, Houston ‘B’, Rice, Arkansas State, Baylor, Cincinnati, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Lamar, Louisiana, Memphis, Sam Houston, Southern Miss, Texas State, Texas Tech, UNLV, UTSA, and Yale.

Last Time Out
The Vaqueros finished in 13th at The Peoples Golf Championship, hosted by Western Carolina, with a two-round score of 584. The final round was canceled due to rain.

UTRGV posted rounds of 291 and 293 as they finished three shots out of the top-10 in the field of 22. The Vaqueros were rolling in the final round as they were two-under par as a team with just two holes left before the rain stopped play.

Esteban Gonzalez led the Vaqueros with a two-round total of 142 to finish tied for 19th. Gonzalez posted rounds of 70 and 72. Taj Sutherland finished tied for 29th with a two-round total of 144 after posting rounds of 71 and 73.

Javier Neira Garcia finished tied for 67th with a two-round score of 149 after posting rounds of 76 and 73. Leonardo Novella tied for 85th with a two-round score of 152 after rounds of 74 and 78. Eddie Lai finished tied for 99th with a two-round score of 154 with rounds of 79 and 75.

Last Year at All-American
The Vaqueros finished in 20th at the 2023 All-American Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 920 after posting rounds of 315, 300, and 305.

Mississippi won the team title with a three-round score of 855 with rounds of 288, 286, and 281. Tennessee and Louisville tied for second with three-round scores of 859.

Javier Neira Garcia led the way for the Vaqueros with a three-round score of 223. Garcia posted rounds of 76, 70, and 77 as he finished tied for 48th. Henry Wang finished tied for 80th with a three-round score of 230 after posting rounds of 77, 77, and 76.

Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished tied for 96th with a three-round score of 235 after turning in rounds of 81, 77, and 76. Taj Sutherland also finished tied for 96th with a 235 after carding rounds of 81, 75, and 79. Leonardo Novella finished 18th in the individual portion of the tournament with a three-round score of 227 after posting rounds of 78, 73, and 76.

Tennessee’s Jake Hall won the individual tournament with a three-round score of 209.
