  1. I remember competing in two different street contests at the G&S factory parking lot. The last one I competed in, Pat Duffy competed in the same age group Factory division as I. He did okay, making a couple of tricks, missing the rest. He's an amazing skater for video, but not consistent as I thought he'd be.

Sean Sheffy competed that same contest in the older Factory age group. I remember him trying the same trick multiple times until he got it. Again, great on video, not so much in contests though.

The early 1990s was an interesting time in skateboarding, where there was a divide between contest skating and video skating. I grew up competing and doing very well in competition, so I was shocked to see some well-known skaters from H-street and Plan B not doing well in contests.

The magic of video can certainly make hours of skate footage look consistent. When it came to live performances, that was some of these guys' Achilles tendon.

Oh and th San Marcos banks was a fun local spot. My brother and I had a skate session there with Matt Hensley the same year when he just turned pro for H-street. I think I mentioned it in my final skate documentary 'DETERMINATION Transforming Adversity into Opportunity'. If not there, I covered that event in a separate video titled 'John Trimble's 48th Skateboard Birthday Celebration' shortly after I recieved one of his signed re-release original pro model boards. Matt Hensley is a cool guy.

  2. When Footage came out it was a big deal in my local skate scene because our hometown hero Andrew Donahue was in a montage after Matt Beach. We couldn't believe someone we knew made into a San Diego pro skate video.
