HIT PARADE! Cardinals Break Out The Lumber At Perfect Time To Cruise To Victory In The Home Opener

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals’ 8-5 win over the Marlins in the home opener on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Ivan Herrera launched his first MLB home run. Lance Lynn gave the Cardinals a solid start but saw the wheels begin to fall off as he was removed from the outing after allowing a couple of fifth-inning homers.

From there, the Cardinals found a way to put together a rally and got sturdy efforts from their relievers to hold together a victory in front of the Busch Stadium crowd on a chilly Thursday in April.

We break down the big moments from the game while diving into the numerous injury updates from Thursday, including info on Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras and more.

  1. Injuries aside, there's not too much I'm worried about for this team for this year. We're kinda doing exactly what most sane people would have expected from us so far and as long as the pitching doesn't regress too far then I expect us to be a an over .500 team. Whether that's enough to win the division is a different story 😂😂.

  2. The Cards have been playing some serious contenders (LAD, SD) and the Marlins were a playoff team, but they have so many injuries, a sweep doesn't carry as much weight as one would think. However it is nice that we're are keeping pace with the rest of the division (even if we are in last currently) while they get to play scrubs like COL, WSH, & NYM.

Cards are doing pretty good, banged up as they are. 🙂

  3. I’m not sure but I thought their celebration was them doing a home and pretty much saying “lets take it home” or something along those lines is my theory

  4. We will have a top 10 pen and nobody knows it yet I've been saying that from the beginning.

  5. Wasn’t pitching in Busch Stadium supposed to remedy some of what ailed LL last year? I hope his pitching performance is not sign of things to come. Hopefully it is not more of the same from last year.

  6. The Cardinals did a lot in the off-season to improve the team, but so did others in the Central. The team is better than last year, and no boos on opening day we are Cardinal Nation show some class. The most disappointing thing that happened was Montgomery being available for a short contract. Gray and Montgomery would make us the favorites in the Central. Moving on and being optimistic, we're better, I still hope they make a trade asap instead of waiting to the deadline for a younger #2 stud.

  7. The booing of Mo stems from frustration. Last year the starting pitching was a big worry and the cardinals stood pat and did nothing and we all know how that went. This year we really needed 2 front end of the rotation guys and we only get 1 and kinda cheap out with the other 2. Then signing Oli to an extension was a ridiculous move that DID NOT need to happen. Front office can say whatever they want about it but it simply was not a good move and fans are frustrated. Top 3 in attendance year in and year out yet we can't break the top 10 in payroll. I wasn't at the game but I would've joined in on the boos. Mo and DeWitt need to feel some pressure from fans

  8. I’m a left handed hitting St Louisan that plays golf right handed. The reason is, when I was a kid we had a couple of ancient right, handed golf clubs in the shed for some reason. I started whacking acorns around the backyard, play right handed ever since. But even as a kid, I thought batting left and playing golf right worked better, keeping the two sports, separate biomechanically

  9. Wow. Good vibes. The National Anthem was outstanding. 💯💯👍👍☝️☝️Yep. Burger to Big Mac Land. Nice work for the CBC grad. Masyn 😃. Herrera’s bat needs to be in the line-up every day. Go Cardinals. Hoping you’re seeing the revenue from the commercials. “Freese’s lawn.” 👍👍☝️☝️😃

  10. This offseason was on the heels of consistent complacency since picking up Goldy and Nado. The owner and FO simply take the fans for granted. Are we spoiled? Possibly but this is a cornerstone franchise in a town deserving of it. What's wrong with expecting them to have as much pride in greatness as we do?

  11. I’m still going to wait before I get excited. We have been out hit in almost every game. Two of our wins were pretty much handed to us on errors and hit batters plus ridiculous walks. We may turn out better than I expected but will see how we are after 30 or 40 games.

  12. The media bears a lot of responsibility for the fans discontent. The casual fan doesn't understand the economics of the game and when the media, as it did this past off season, is continually getting fans hopes up of signing guys like Yamamoto, Ohtani, and other high priced free agents, it's natural that fans are going to feel let down and betrayed by the organization. It just fuels the narrative we already see throughout the country that billionaires are just greedy and evil and thus that Cardinal ownership is "cheap". Instead of celebrating ownership and the front office for creating a competitive team for more than 2 decades, where the team has a good chance to win season after season….. as opposed to the cycle so many other teams have of being really bad for 4 or 5 seasons to pile up young talent, and then being good for 3 or 4….. instead of celebrating that….. we just dwell on spending and payroll…… which is in line with team revenue.

  13. It’s really too bad they were mathematically eliminated from contention after the 0-2 start. 😢

The BFIB are getting dumber and unhinged. The feelings about Mo are well established. Booing him, while you’re bring out the guys in the red jackets is classless.

  14. Matty Carp and BCraw aren’t here for their abilities ON the field anymore. It’s not concerning I’d they get injured, from a team talent loss point of view. If anything, being injured is extremely helpful

  15. The Marlins X acct shows Burger's HR going into BigMac land. Wasn't so fun at the time but now we can laugh at that. Chilly but fun day!

  16. It was a fun game yesterday, I wasn't there, but I wish I had been.
You spoke about Mo being booed. The fans are pretty fed up with that guy and for good reason. Mo has done some things that are upsetting to loyal Cardinals fans. Nothing against Oli, but Mo fired a fan favorite coach who had just finished a 17 win streak with no explanation or why it happened. That gave us the fans who were outraged about it the same middle finger he gave to Shildt. Mo had been a decent president of operations IMHO until that happened.Oli comes on board and Mo is not kidding anybody, he is not a field manager by any stretch of the imagination and it's seems clear that he is trying wear that hat as well. Whenever Mo comes up to a microphone with Cardinal nation in attendance is the only time we the fans get a chance to express to him what we think. Booing Mo is not a good look but he earned it.

  17. Regarding Sonny, I think patience is a virtue. Let him throw a rehab game in Memphis, make sure he's 100%, and let's keep him going for the rest of the season. It hurts too much when he's not in the rotation.

  18. Was there in Big Mac land, did not boo. The guy is doing his job and it’s not to spend other people’s money at his sole discretion. Also, some of the players that the “fans” were all but demanding that we overpay for, haven’t really looked to be all that special, at least for now. Let’s see how Gray is when he’s back in a week or so.

  19. I have never felt the need to boo anyone…. even opposing teams. I just don't understand that philosophy. Nobody cares about my displeasure, so I don't feel like I need to prove that to someone. If I am displeased with what the FO is doing, I won't spend money on the game. Otherwise, I am going to cheer and support them.

  20. It looks like St. Louis has been playing better defense. I don't think they have committed an error so far this season.

  21. I also think everyone is a bit too high on Scott right now. he truly needs more time in AAA. Nor he or Siani are doing anything offensively. We can't continue to use Scott speed/defense as the reason he is staying up when his speed is doing very little. You have to get on base to utilize said speed and it's been 5 times over 8 games. He needs time in AAA, I am perfectly fine playing Siani in CF for a few weeks so Scott can get the development he deserves. I don't think the difference between Siani and Scott defensively is much at all.

  22. That's certainly a game we would have rolled over and lost last year. Really good comeback. Especially with the team having so many guys out that we planned to be our starters. No Noot, no Carlson, no Contreras, no Donny and the Cards are still acquitting themselves quite well. Once Noot and Carlson come back the defense may not be AS good as it is with Scott and Siani but the offense will certainly improve. Add in Sonny and then we should get on a nice roll.

  23. Why should I feel "bad" for booing if they perform better than last year? If I don't perform up to expectations at work I get counseled. What's the difference? None.

  24. The booing didn't show a lot of Class by some folks. You must remember he does not own the checkbook. I think he made some pretty good acquisitions this offseason and we will see what happens. What are your thoughts about Shohei Ohtani lying about meeting that fan that caught that first home run as a Los Angeles Dodger. The Dodgers pressured her into giving it up separated from her husband and other questionable things. Did Yadi ever show up for spring training or anything yet?

  25. I won’t rip you for your thoughts on the boos. I will rip you for using “batted around” for sending 9 men to the plate. At least one place in the batting order needs to have two plate appearances in an inning to be “batting around.” Sending 9 men to the plate would be “batting through” the order. I’ll die on this hill.

  26. If Sonny Gray is healthy and ready, then I want him starting April 8th in the 1st game against a tough Phillies team! If they wanna do that 6th starter deal with Zack Thompson I'm ok with that for the beginning of the season I guess. However, I'd rather the Cardinals original game play with Gray, Mikolas, Matz, Lynn, and Gibson to go into effect. I think it all depends on how the next 2 games go, and if Gray feels ready. Otherwise, Thompson on the 8th and Gray on the 9th would probably be another plan.

  27. Our Cards took advantage of the Marlins errors with their overworked bad bullpen which is great. Lance Lynn has to make adjustments if you throw 90% fastballs they are not 97 mph anymore , the hitters are looking FOR IT. I like his slider down mix in a change, cut your fb to 60% he will be more successful!! What's with all the injuries against and hits batsmen. Imo if 3 guys get hit on the same team a warning has to be issued, that was rediculous! Thanks Brenden⚾️🏆
