Jamal Mashburn on 90’s Basketball, Michael Jordan, Being Ahead of His Time (Plus a Josh Hart Draft!)

This week we are so excited to welcome NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn (Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets) to The Old Man and the Three! Mash was truly an amazing guest. He got into what he sees when watching today’s NBA and how he compares it to where the league was in the 1990s and 2000s. He also shared great stories about playing for Rick Pitino at the University of Kentucky, why he thinks Pitino is the best teacher of the game, and how he thinks Pitino was ahead of his time. Then, Mash discusses his own skillset, one that many would also consider to be ahead of its time in the 90s. JJ and Mash also have an in-depth discussion about basketball skill development in the present day and how it does or doesn’t translate to the NBA. Mash also shares what Michael Jordan once told him in a one-on-one game, and what he remembers about playing in possibly the greatest NCAA basketball game ever played (Kentucky vs. Duke and the Christian Laettner shot). New York Knicks guard Josh Hart then joins for a draft of Things That Should Be Illegal.

  1. "White-Porzingis Pick-and-Roll"

For a sec I was like, "Wait, Porzingis is already white" before I realized

  2. It would be interesting to ask a panel of NBA greats/minds whether the games would be more intense and teams would have more diverse identities if they had more days to practice together and less total games maybe bring it down to 70 games (maybe an offseason or preseason podcast).

I think we're seeing star pairings and role players trading all the time where they have no idea how to play together because they're just learning on the fly just via games without enough practice to gain chemistry/rapport. I have a feeling less games would end up making the league more money because the quality of the games would go up (similar to NFL).

  3. He wouldve been a HOFer had he not been injured in Miami and Charlotte. People forget he came in averaging 20 as a rookie then 24 as a sophomore in a league where the west coast teams averaged 90 to 95

  4. Holy crap, 5 minutes in to his interview and Jamal's already one of my favorite listens in your pod. High IQ, no ego. Let's goooooo

THANK YOU JASON. You won the draft just for your no talking in the theatre answer.

  5. Great interview. People gotta stop playing cause Mash had some of the best footwork in da game and had a very high basketball IQ.

  6. I love the pod, I loved the convo and storytelling portion with Jamal. But, what I the world was that draft portion of the episode!!?? 😮😮😮what in the world JJ. Lol 😂
