Well we had a busy weekend a three-day weekend we were off on Good Friday shout out Matt moscona for that vacation day want to go around the room a little bit we’ll start with you Cassie since you’re the uh the Newbie on the show today how was your Easter weekend um I can’t

Complain I I went home I live in mety um and really just spent it with my family I had some good time with them that was about it it was pretty chill weekend did we have a crawfish boil yesterday we did not crawfish is just too expensive so

What we what’ you do we had shrimp we boiled shrimp so I got to be honest I like boiled shrimp better than crawfish anyways but uh Al what about you I did I did have crawfish yesterday um yeah hung out with my neighbors didn’t go home cuz my family

All lives in Texas but um and I didn’t know we were going to have good Friday off so I didn’t like be I wasn’t able to like plan it last second but yeah had some crawfish hung out with my neighbors we went riding scooters around LSU yesterday oh the electric ones yeah yeah

I’m not very coordinated when it comes to those but it’s fine my wife was listening uh she’d kill me for saying this so a couple years ago we went and it wasn’t the scooters it was the bike she did the electronic bikes bless her heart she’s not good at them yeah either

Awful she she couldn’t figure out that like you don’t have to Pedal super fast because you know it’s and I think weode bikes around LSU for 8 minutes and then we just packed it up and said you know what let’s call this a day but you know I still married her

After all that so that’s good I’m glad true her there yeah um look my Easter was busy um Friday was actually my brother’s birthday we had to devote the entire day to him because CU he’s the youngest well yeah and this time last year I was on my honeymoon we we were in

So I missed his 21st birthday he stole his Thunder it look well Alro think you thinking that I scheduled the wedding date is fling that’s fair that’s fair yeah so we got we got married on March 26th so I just last Tuesday actually I had my uh one-year wedding anniversary but it was

Uh it was my brother’s birthday on the 29th we had left on the 28th to go to Aruba so like I had just gotten there um I think his last year’s birthday consisted of me calling him on our hotel balcony telling him happy birthday and

Then hanging up but uh no we kind of voted the whole day to him we went to Global Wildlife it’s that uh you know that that Wildlife Reserve area out there in Robert or fome Louisiana whatever you want to call it where you can like ride on the back of a thing and

Like yeah you ride on a thing you no it’s like a golf cart or whatever no it’s it’s a tractor but they pull these trailers behind you I mean the trailers hold like 50 60 people and uh we we did that you feed all the animals or

Whatever it was a great time they had a giraffe come up to the to the card a couple Buffalo some zebras which you’re not supposed to feed this is for your brother’s birthday this is for my brother’s birthday turning 12 yeah you would think 22 um but that

Was more of my mom’s yeah part of the thing and then uh we went to tacos and beer and Hammond alra you would love this place I mean it uh best best beef tacos I’ve ever had yeah that is not a joke and like they do it old school too

So it’s like ground beef it’s really called tacos and beer tacos and beer I like that ground beef cilantro onions that’s it no topping no sauce nothing I mean that’s the taco but it’s phenomenal so we went there and then then we went home I got to nap at

Least a little bit and then we went to the zido game out here it was awesome I love the bat Rouge zyo they did they did they have not been winning a ton this season but then they fired their head coach so so okay or didn’t he quit or

Something so no they they fired the head coach a player was player coach for like two months and now they have a third head coach this guy doing somewhat well so I’m guessing that’s going to stick but uh no so we we go to the zako game

They wound up winning that’s just Friday right and then yesterday what a long day well yesterday’s busy because Victoria has a massive family it took me two to three years to learn everybody in her family’s name because I have six people in my family so it’s very easy

And uh we go to a crawfish boil about 1:00 to her house um you know we did the whole shake hands all that stay there for about an hour then left and then my house um what we lack in numbers we make up for and enthusiasm I know you’re

Probably shocked to hear that one yeah I’m um so we we we go to my house and alre I hate to tell you I know I bragged on F on Thursday about how good we were at the egg toss oh you lost we didn’t do it

Oh you didn’t do the egg do the I know I said I was going to have video evidence oh man but we we were supposed to eat girl off issued 500 W up not eating till 6:30 by the time we were down it was

Dark so I mean it was we were trying to do it maybe this upcoming weekend I doubt it happened so I know I talked to b game I know T-Bob made fun of me because I had no idea how far we actually stood apart I said I was going

To video it I lied I did not video it because we did not do it but you know we had a little fun threw the football around loosened up the old cannon or I mean the water pistol for me but uh yeah no so everybody’s Easter was good yeah I

Would say so it was better than uh LS baseball this weekend right man heartbreaking weekend for LSU baseball so you know what I just realized when you were doing the open today is April Fool’s Day yeah and I had a joke lined up for that let’s hear let’s hear your

T-Bob talk I forgot to tell you guys if you remember on Thursday T-Bob was all excited because he got to play thus which was one of the disciples in the last supper at the church I also had an event at my uncle’s Church turns out it

Was the same event so I actually had a front row seat to see our guy T-Bob and action uh I could tell he was side eyed me a little bit he did not know I was going to show up because I didn’t know until I got there that we were in the

Same location I had no idea like I look at the guys walking up on stage and I’m like wait a minute that’s T-Bob so he sees me and he sticks out like a it got to him a little bit he he admit it but he he got a little he got a little

Nervous he didn’t even have a line what was he nervous about I don’t know I guess he was like why is Taylor here but I had to clarify like no I did not in any circumstance come to support you whatsoever I came from my uncle all right look let’s let’s dive into some

Women’s basketball if you missed it it was uh Saturday it was the early tip off the noon tip off the Tigers take down UCLA in a two3 matchup in a game that a lot of people thought the Bruins were going to win while the Tigers they get

It done 7869 a nine-point victory for your lady Tigers to advance to the elite eight it was the FL Johnson show on Saturday and honestly guys that’s not the first time this year that it has been the FL Johnson show she has been excellent since this NCAA Tournament

Game started she’s had three really good games two excellent games backto back uh she finishes this game 24 points 12 rebounds from the guard position to go along with two blocks which is something she never does she also had a handful of steals I believe she had two or three of

Those as well a complete game for fla Johnson but it wasn’t just her I mean The Usual Suspects contributed Angel ree she has another double double 16 Points 11 rebounds Kaya Williams was excellent she had 12 points had a couple rebounds as well uh Ana marrow does what she does

17 points four rebounds we talked about it the other day when coach Kim Moi was on that Ana Maro and Angel Reese are the only teammates in women’s college basketball to both have over 20 double doubles in the same season they are the only Duo so your post play really solid

For LSU and it was once again on Saturday guys I still don’t believe that this LSU Women’s Basketball team has played their best game which is hard to say considering that they are now in the elite a and I I just ran across the numbers and if you look at the raw

Numbers you’re like okay this team shot really well and they did I mean they shot 45% from the court 40% from three but they only took five of them it was that post play we talked about right fla Johnson in the Fast Break getting those steals leading to uh easy buckets and

Transition angel ree down low an marrow Michaela Williams it was really her mid-range game which we’ve seen so much of this year I know she’s typically your best three-point shooter she didn’t take a ton of shots Haley vanlith quieter night for her only four points but you

Know what Haley vanett did she played point guard in this game and that’s you know if you guys have listened to me or really anybody else on the show that’s been my biggest complaint I don’t believe LSU has a true point guard I still don’t but they are finding ways to

Win regardless of that right I mean they continue to prove me wrong what do you not have you don’t have any scoring Off the Bench that’s true true no one’s going to argue that as a matter of fact you had a seveners rotation on Saturday you had two bench points two it was

Aiyah Del Rosario she came in she had two points and she went two for two from the free throw line so it wasn’t even a shot from the field was at the foul line now last year POA came in she’s excellent on defense she’s a really good

Distributor she’s kind of the true point guard but she doesn’t have enough scoring to put her in that starting lineup like a Haley van lith does but I’m mened with Van lith seven points so you look at it you’re like okay seven points one for eight from the court

Which wasn’t good but she goes five for six from the free throw line hit a couple cut clutch free free throws down the stretch and here was the biggest thing for me five assists only one turnover for Haley van lith that’s been the issue right she is not a primary

Ball hander at least she has not been in her career she’s more comfortable at that two guard spot she’s not a natural point guard when she had seven points and you’re like okay well you know below average game but when you look at five assists to one turnover as that primary

Ball handler I can live with that I can live with that all game long also she hits those clutch free throws that was a big difference in the game as well LSU 77% from the line UCLA only 66% from the line another big difference LSU guarded the three-point shot better than they

Have all year long sometimes they’ve been susceptible to these these teams going on runs against them because they don’t guard behind the arc quite as well they were excellent at it against a UCLA team who’s that’s their goal they they are a three-point shooting team they

Don’t have a lot of size down low other than Lauren Beth who’s 6′ s outside of her they’re they’re a three-point shooting team they really use her down low to kind of space it to dish it out to all the shooters the shots weren’t falling for him they were two for 17 at

Half time on three-point shots they finished the game seven of 32 that’s 21.9% I mentioned it LSU only took five shots but they made them count two for five 40% so if you can beat the team in field goal percentage you can beat them in three-point percentage and you can

Beat him at the free throw line chances are you’re going to win that game I also talked about all the steals that we had whether it was Van lith Johnson Michaela Williams you name it Angel ree had four steals which is something we don’t see a ton

Of UCLA had 19 turnovers in that game LSU was still sloppy as well they had 13 and I mentioned it I still don’t think this team’s played their best game I mean we saw it in the the round one game against rice a team that you thought LS

Was going to blow out that game was closer than a lot of people thought because you had 24 turnovers in that game coach Moi came on just last week on this exact show and said I congratulated my team in the locker room because they had 24 turnovers and they still won a

Basketball game which is something that should not happen and then you fast forward to the Middle Tennessee game which was the round of 32 they weren’t great in that game they got off to a slow start they were actually trailing for large portions of that game it was

That big fourth quarter where they went on like a 20 a four run that really separated because when you look at that you’re like okay LSU beat Middle Tennessee State by 20 points they did what they were supposed to do and they did if you didn’t watch that game if you

Watch that game you could see for three quarters LSU struggled to separate from a middle Tennessee team that they are a lot better than because of those turnovers because of the inefficiency shooting because of troubles at the free throw line they didn’t have any of that this

Game this was their most complete game they played in the tournament but I I still think they can do better I mentioned it 13 turnovers 20 fouls total both of those numbers got to come down and again only two points off the bench but that’s how

You’ve kind of been all year long right you run a seven person rotation but Del Rosario kind of comes in to just give Angel ree a breather and then last TI POA she’s your ball distributor she’s your your defensive specialist neither of them are going to put up a ton of

Points and so that that brings us back to our point of well you don’t have a two point guard you don’t have any points Off the Bench it hasn’t mattered because you have a team that fights and Claws for everything they earn you have Angel ree fla Johnson who were key

Members of that National Championship team a year ago they’re both a year older you have Haley van leth who came in and it took her a little while to get going but she’s still a veteran player it’s her first year at LSU but she played a lot of big-time college

Basketball when she was at Louisville Kayla Williams the lone freshman but then you have an AM Maru who was probably your biggest transfer Edition I mean if you would have told me hey Haley vanlith is not the most important transfer you got I would have said no

Way but anise Amaro has been so critical and so crucial to this team success I say that to say this you’re going to need that because you have the team that everyone’s been watching all year long you have the Iowa hawkey tonight I don’t need to tell anyone how big of a game

This is it is the rematch of the national championship game a year ago which is some of the best basketball I’ve ever seen this women’s basketball team play in any era not just under Kim Moi you’re going to have to do that again you’re you’re going to have to get

More from your bench if you have two points tonight against Iowa off your bench you’re losing that ball game plain and simple look at the players that stepped up for you last year Jasmine Carson came in scored like 20 points it’s hitting three after three after

Three no I get it you were a lot deeper last year than you are this year can you get eight points from last year POA can you get six points to eight points from aiyah Del Rosaria if you do that I like your chances in this game because while

Iowa is a great basketball team making no mistake about it it is still very much the Caitlyn Clark ship in their second round game this is the Iowa Haw in their second round game against West Virginia they scored 64 points total Kaitlin clerk had 32 of their 64 points

She had half of their team’s points in their win over West Virginia now over the weekend they scored 89 points against Colorado it was it was a team win for sure no doubt about it Caitlin Clark still 29 Points by far the most on that team I think the

Next highest had like 17 or 18 you have to do what you did last year and last year you gave up shots to her she is too good of a player to shut down completely there’s no doubt about it can you contain her like you did a year ago

Because if you remember what happened a year ago she was hot early on but she scored in bunches right she was hot then she would get a little cold she was hot then she would get a little cold she was cold in that second quarter that’s how you opened up

That big double digit lead going into halftime it continued there in the second half if you can ke in on her and limit her as much as possible I like your chances because that’s going to force everybody on Iowa to step up and make shots outside of Caitlin Clark not

To say they can’t do it I just mentioned against Colorado they scored 89 points but it’s not something they’ve had to do a ton of all year long they’ve really it’s I mean it’s been the Caitlyn Clark show you go watch they play a ton of iso

Ball with Caitlyn Clark they let her do her thing she’ll throw it up over two or three people a lot of times she makes it but we kind of saw this last year sometimes Caitlin Clark takes these tough shots to the detriment of her team and I get it you’re Caitlin Clark you’re

The best player in the country hands down no doubt about it she’s goingon to have to get her teammates more involved tonight you’re GNA have to make her get her teammates more involved tonight that’s the key to Victory against Caitlyn Clark because if you don’t man up on her and and play

Tight defense on her not only is she going to score a ton that’s going to open up everything else for her teammates because then you’re going to have to collapse your defense in on her then she’s going to kick it out they got a couple good three-point Shooters on

That team it’s not just Caitlin but you limit her and limit her production early in this basketball game I like your chances because a couple the girls on Iowa I mean they can make a couple key shots here and there force them to make shots for four quarters

That’s something they haven’t had to do all year if anyone can do it I believe Kim Moi and the LSU lady tigers can do it do I think what what’s going to happen tonight I don’t know I I I want to pick LSU but they just beat this Iowa

Team last year and it’s so hard to beat Caitlin Clark twice in a row but I’m optimistic I think either either way this is going to be a tight game this is not going to be a blowout either way you slice it I mean this is going to be one

Of those games that four minutes to go in the fourth quarter it’s probably a tie basketball game I mean I don’t think I’m going out on a limb saying that I think most people would agree with that so heck of a basketball game tonight I’m excited shut down Kaylin Clark limit her

Early on Force the other Iowa hawkey players to make shots I think that’s the key to your success but also you do have to get more scoring off your bench something you haven’t really had all year long let’s see if they can step up in the biggest moment all right we’re

Fville we talked all week long we were hoping they would get one of three and that did not happen the Tigers got swept so Thursday was 7 to four Friday 4 to3 in an Extra Inning 10 inning game and then Saturday 7 to5 let’s kind of go

Game by game and and see how it happened so on Thursday you know that was the that was the decision everyone was talking about Coach Jay Johnson left uh Luke hulleman on Friday was he pitching around Hagen Smith don’t know but you know he he decided to go with Javin Coleman in game

One and it was Johnny Hol staff I mean you threw seven pitchers on that Thursday night game and you actually got to Hagen Smith okay so Hagen Smith LSU got two runs off of him in six Innings Smith had only allowed two runs on five hits in six

Innings before leaving that game with a 3-2 lead but he had not given up a run in an SEC game this season prior to Thursday’s contest so know what you’re saying okay he shut the door on LSU he had a 3-2 lead he only gave up six uh

Three run two runs after six Innings LSU actually got to him a lot better than everybody else did so if you’re LSU Hagen Smith leaves the game it’s three to2 you feel pretty good about your chances so let’s kind of break down what what happened with the scoring so

Back-to-back home runs by third baseman Tommy Riot and catcher Hayden triny that actually gave LSU a two to one advantage in that fourth inning Arkansas responded though in the bottom of that fourth designated hitter Jack Wagner he launched a solo home run second baseman pton stoval who hurt you all weekend

You had Luke Heman on the mount right it was Luke Coleman versus Mason Molina Mason Molina’s been a really good pitcher all year long but Luke hullman has been your e he’s been one of the best pitchers in the SEC hullman just didn’t have it on Friday plain and simple he worked four

Win in that game Josh Pearson he had a two out two-run single in the top of the third inning that gave LSU a two to nothing lead against Arkansas’s starting pitcher Mason Molina Arkansas had three runs though in the bottom of that fourth inning against Luke Heman that’s kind of

Where it unraveled for him again center fielder Ty wils Meer he had an RBI double second baseman pton stoval we mentioned him earlier not the last time we talk about him on the weekend he drove in a run on a ground out first baseman Ben mcclaflin he produced a runs

Scoring double I mean it was everybody in the Arkansas lineup started hitting they started getting contact against Luke Heman so that’s when you pull him and put in Griffin Haring and again Griffin Herring really kind of steadied things for you now LSU tied the game three to3 in the sixth inning when pinch

Hitter again Ashton lson he had a sack fly um RBI with the bases loaded catcher Hudson wh’s RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning was the difference in that ball game Arkansas got the four to3 win so they get the first two game three probably the most heartbreaking game of

The entire weekend because you were up 4 to one early in in this baseball game but Arkansas overcame that 4-1 deficit with a three-run fourth inning and the Razer backs go on to win seven to five this was a game where you just left Gage jump in a little bit too long very

Similar to the outing Luke Coleman had they both pitched four in some change they both gave up multiple runs started out well a lot like Luke Heman you just left him in there a little bit too long so this was a game this was a time white

Game I mean he was great he actually LED off the game with a leadoff home run top of the first first batter of the game it gave LSU an early one- nothing leap Arkansas tied the game in the bottom of the first their Short Stop hit

A solo home run LSU reclaimed that lead in the third inning though a two-run home run by Ashton lson you’ve heard His Name a lot we’ll get to him a little bit later as well um that was actually the first home run of larsson’s college career but he was awesome all series

In the six it was wils Meer again that was Ty wils Meer he drove in a run on a ground out stoval once again killed you he launched a two-run home run his fourth home run of the year his second in this series LSU narrowed it seven to5

At that point uh Bingham I mentioned his second Homer of the day it was a solo shot to go seven to five Tigers had two Runners on with one out in the top of the ninth Tommy White hit what appeared to be a three-run homer guys this was

Right down that left field line the ball was ruled foul just barely they went to review they looked at the monitor they upheld it it was foul no go I mean that’s something that would have actually given you the lead in the top of the ninth inning turns out that

Wasn’t the case but but look that one hit that that went foul instead of fair that’s not what lost you this series again they get swept Tigers fall to two and seven in SEC play Let’s kind of look at the cons of this series CU I

Think there was a lot it was obviously your untimely hitting this has been an issue for LSU all year long but you’ve been able to rely on your pitching to kind of get you out of these situations you have such untimely hitting you cannot continue to leave guys on base

They left eight guys on base just Friday alone and it was pretty much like that Thursday Friday and Saturday we talked about LSU losing 7 to5 on Saturday 4 to3 on Friday you leave eight guys on on Friday that’s the difference in a one-run game you had every

Opportunity to win that game I think the bullpen pitching left a lot to be desired outside of Griffin Haring who we talked about he was excellent he’s probably your best arm out of the bullpen when your starters don’t have it like Luke hullman engage jump did not

Your PIN needs to step up that was not the case this weekend especially by guys you really thought thought you could count on I talked about Fidel uoa he pitched one and a third two hits two walks two earned runs no strikeouts Gavin gidry he had two

Appearances and he was a lot better on Saturday he was the Gavin gidry we expect on Saturday but he goes in there Thursday night only last the third of an inning gave up a hit two walks three earned runs all in just a third of an

Inning that’s not going to get it done especially in a big time moment like Thursday night when you get to Hagen Smith a little bit right he goes out of the game it’s three to2 you have a chance to win but you’re having to do that Johnny Hol to have approach seven

Pitchers on Thursday night you need them to be on their aame especially a big- Time pitcher like Gavin gri fortunately that wasn’t the case he did bounce back on Saturday though though Justin lore pitched really well Justin lore has been kind of a shakier arm out of the bullpen

We’ve seen a lot of good from him a lot of bad I thought he was on the money this weekend as far as Pros go Tommy White Tommy White was four of 13 on the weekend two RB he did have a home run he’s hitting better cuz kind of going

Into SEC play you’re looking you’re like Tommy White has one home run on the year he’s just not the same guy we’ve seen last year he’s picked it up in SEC play in a big way he looks like the Tommy White from last year no concern with him

Whatsoever also Matt Bingham five for 13 on the weekend two RBI had two home runs both of them in that Saturday game and a must-win game three now you came up short but that was no fault to MC [ __ ] also Ashton lson I mean we mentioned him

In every single game recap we just did he is showing that that he should be in the everyday lineup look is that at left field is that at second base is that at DH I don’t know but this guy has to be in the lineup going forward until proven

Otherwise because that’s the issue right you thought you had a solid lineup with Milo M you thought you had your left field figured out you thought you had all this your your DH but then they stopped hitting once SEC play came around you put in Ashton lson who

Actually had limited action outside of conference he steps up and he shows that he belongs in the SEC I think he’s got to be in the lineup moving forward also Michael brazwell continues to hit he actually has a better batting average in SEC play than he did out of conference

Which is kind of weird to say but and you think about it he’s a guy that’s an SEC transfer right he came from South Carolina he’s used to this that’s why you brought this guy in you needed a veteran presence who was used to SEC play because you lost a lot of talent

Smith I don’t know about this pick Mason Smith has a lot of potential he has a lot of size I get it a lot of his career was due to injury but he never lived up to that festar billing here during his college crew it was a surprise to me that he

Declared for the NFL draft because on national Signing Day Brian Kelly had a press conference and someone asked him about the lack of SES at the defensive tackle spot and he came out bluntly and said we feel really good about our retention at that position he was

Talking about Mason Smith about a week later Mason Smith declares for the NFL draft now was that because they didn’t have a defensive line coach I don’t know there’s been rumors and speculation about that that not having a defensive line coach could have been a big reason

As to why Mason Smith declared for the NFL draft it was a head scratching decision for me I thought that if he came back in a Blake Baker defense that defense should be much improved I thought his draft stock would rise but again everyone has a different situation

Everyone has to do with think is best for them I just think that there are better defensive tackles out there at 48 overall even even if you believe Mason Smith has this potential I mean maai Wingo for one who was a lot more productive at LSU than Mason Smith was

We’ve heard about Jordan Jefferson me Jordan Jefferson’s a guy that we sat here last week and talked about how many people at the pro day said that they were here specifically for Jordan Jefferson he’s a guy that continues to rise up draft boards he was very productive last year when maai Wingo

Went down he was your best defensive tackle there was no question about it he kind of pushed Mason Smith out of the rotation at times I mean not only do I think there’s better defensive tackles I think LSU has two better defensive tackles here at 48

Overall so he has Mason Smith at 48 overall that’s the second round going all the way to round four pick 104 the Arizona Cardinals take a second LSU Tiger it’s a defensive tackle Makai winga look we all know about maai Wingo he meant so much to this team for the last

Two years I mean he came over from Missouri he was Brian Kelly’s first big transfer along with Jaden Daniels he came into this season as a first team All-American didn’t quite live up to that but was that his fault or was that on that mat house defense he battled

Through some injuries this year he’s a bit under sized at that position for the next level but honestly I mean Aaron Donald he they’re similar sizes and Aaron Donald played a little bit in a little bit outside he predominantly played that defensive tackle spot maai Wingo could do that he’s a very strong

Player he has a low center of gravity um again I think that 2023 defense hurt his draft stock significantly I think he’s another player who also should have considered coming back that didn’t happen though I do think he projects well at the next level again I would take him

Over at Mason Smith just because he had been productive in college at two spots he was a freshman All-America in Missouri comes here puts on a another All-American season at LSU and then this past year it was a disappointment for every single person on that defense he battled through injuries but he’s a

Solid player nonetheless in round seven it’s where we move to Matt Miller has the New England Patriots taking Charles Turner this is a guy that has not been mocked in a lot of drafts I mean most people thought he was going to be a free agent but you know Miller

Mentions he’s an experienced multi-year starter at Center it was one of the best offensive lines in the nation last year and you know Turner was kind of the anchor of that offensive line he he was the leader of that group the veteran pres if you will I mean as good as will

Campell and emyy Jones were they they stepped in as true freshman tackles two seasons ago Charles Turner was kind of there to guide him to kind of be that veteran leader on that offensive line Patriots need offensive line help in a big way the Patriots need everything first off but they need

Offensive line help in a big way Charles Turner that’s not a bad selection okay so what I what I like and dislike about this mock draft I love Brian Thomas a 12 overall I’ve kind of seen him mocked into the late teens early 20s but after what he did at

The NFL combine I do think he could go a little higher than that I think Arizona is a really good spot for him I think he could help out Kyler Murray a lot Kyler Murray likes to throw those balls up deep down the field Brian Thomas is

Proven that he can go get 50-50 balls that he is a really good deep threat down the field I think that fits to what Kyler Murray likes to do really well I don’t see Mason Smith going that high not that I don’t think could be a good

Player just based on what he did at LSU’s Pro Day based on his injury history and his production at the college level I don’t see someone taking a chance on him at 48 overall I mean third fourth round maybe so in the second round you can get a guy out there

Who I think is more of a sure thing or that at least you’re sure about because again I mean Mason Smith his ceiling is as high as he wants it to go how healthy is he what version of Mason Smith are you gonna get maai wngo in the fourth

Round seems a little low but I could see that happening he is a little bit undersized for that position the biggest surprise to me is that Matt Miller did not have Jordan Jefferson being drafted at all I mean there’s been a lot of mock drafts out there that have Jordan

Jefferson being drafted ahead of Makai winga and he doesn’t have him on his board at all I mean Jordan Jefferson was solid at the LSU pro day he was very productive this year he’s probably your best defensive tackle kind of the one consistent presence you had on that

Defensive front for all of 2023 he’s a big body he’s 6’4 he’s about 300 lb he has the size to play in there because everything you’re concerned about with Makai Wingo the injury this past year and the undersiz Jordan Jefferson doesn’t have that he didn’t have an injury this past year he’s not

Under siiz so I don’t see how Jordan Jefferson doesn’t get drafted I could actually see him going fifth round there’s a lot of people out there who were very high on Jordan Jefferson now you know it’s a conversation we’ve had before but I do want to kind of re visit it now that

Was the one time Georgia maybe he can give you some depth maybe he can take over and grab a starting spot who knows now you got Dominick McKinley coming in I don’t expect him to make a huge impact at least not game one because he’s not participating in the spring

Dominic McKinley is not going to be there till fall practice Kelly talked about cross training a few guys I think there’s two guys out there that stand out Above the Rest I think that Savon Jones as good of a defensive end as he was last year he’s

Not really a pass rush specialist you can find somebody out there whether it’s DeShawn wac somebody like that they can get out there and Rush pass you could move him inside if you needed to I mean he’s 6’4 he’s 280 lbs he puts on a little bit of weight he’s

Right there maai wngo was about that size maybe a little bit heavier not quite as tall and he managed fine matter of fact he did really well Paris Shand is another right now on LSU’s official roster they have Paris Shand at 65 275 pounds you had 10 to 15 pounds to par

Shand we saw what he can do I mean he he’s a bull rusher he stuck his hand up there two or three times last year and got some batted balls if you could have that in the middle of your defense I think peris Shand and Savon Jones along with a Jacobian

Gillery with a Shan Washington those guys don’t have to move inside fulltime because I know what you’re thinking well if you move them inside then you’re a little thin on defensive end for sure this would be a situational thing this would be something that you could say hey in these specific packages we’re

Going to move Shan down we’re GNA move Jones down we’re going to put Desa and wack in to rush the passer other situations Shan and Jones will be outside you’ll have Giller in there you’ll have Shan washhington in there that’s kind of what we’re looking at I

Think you can do it you’re going to have to PE it together a little bit but if anybody can do it it’s Blake Baker right I mean that’s why you give him this big contract that’s why you bring him in to revamp your defense we saw what he did

In Missouri he went in there he had a tough defense in Missouri his first year but they still struggled a little bit his second year in that program he had him in the top 50 defense from like 130 the year before I mean he was excellent

I don’t see why he can’t do that here because while you’re struggling with depth on the defensive line top to bottom on this defense you still have a lot more Talent than Missouri did when he took over that job he fit in right did really well there I don’t see why

We talked about it uh opening segment I completely forgot until I got here today uh how how how was your uh how was your holiday weekend it was good man got to spend time with the family and was able to to kind of just enjoy some some beach time

And then grill a little bit yesterday and all that fun stuff so it is good one man I hope yours was great too yeah it was good we got some crawfish I’m going to have to take out a second mortgage uh to pay that sack off but uh we had a we

Had a good time nonetheless John Let’s dive right into it um you know not a ton of huge moves but the Saints have been busy in free agency you know they’ve signed Chase young they’ve signed a couple defensive players they got Willie gay out of all of those moves that

You’ve seen the Saints make so far in free agency which one stands out to you the most yeah look I think from a from a player perspective it’s got to be Willie gate J J for me I know Chase young is that’s a big one right I mean that they

They brought him in for a reason but look I just look at what he’s able to bring on the field and off the field just the energy and passion and just is able to to do a lot of things from a linebacker perspective and he’s hungry

He’s a guy that wants to have more playing time he’s gonna get a chance to earn more playing time you might see the S defense uh have more three linebacker sets with him um but he’s a guy that you know is extremely strong against the mobile quarterback which is something

Saints have just not been particularly good at and so look I really love the addition of him in this linebacker room a guy that’s a a a local kid Mississippi State if you will and and so a Super Bowl champion two-time Super Bowl champion so he brings a lot of goodness

To the the table and I think for the most part former Chiefs have worked out pretty well for the Saints um I think that’s from the player perspective but from a coaching perspective you got to look at that offensive staff of Quint kubak I think that’s been the biggest

Move the sa could have made and have made this off season yeah I guess that’s kind of where I want to go next um because you got Chris alive you got Rasheed jahed we know that those are two solid receivers do you look for them to draft

A receiver because you know they haven’t been super active as far as free agent receivers yeah look I I think everything should be on the table I think with the Ryan Ram news it probably makes you think that tackle is probably going to be the 14th overall pick and some form

Of fashion but look there’s still receivers out there so I think free agency is still a route that they could go I know that they believe a lot in nathy Perry and his ability they really are high on coach Keith Williams coach dub that they brought in It’s Gonna

Emulate and be a little bit more like Curtis Johnson was for this receiving group and so it’s going to help these young guys grow up a good bit they really like the the idea of Cedric Wilson a guy like Hunter Renfro still out there so that’s somebody to keep an

Eye on um but they really want to find a possession guy and that’s that’s really where we probably should look at a little bit more and look L could be that top guy that number one guy but you know I think there’s a certain prototype that

You’re looking at in that aspect and so I I think when you look at 45 that could be something that’s on the table look I wouldn’t Ru out a tight end potentially you know I think that’s something that is also Up For Debate but you know this

Is a tackle Rich uh de draft for this team to look at and so I would expect them to at least come up with some type of of combination where it’s an offensive lineman and maybe a skill position that would make a lot of sense as far as offensive line goes I mean

It’s it’s no secret right the Saints need offensive lineman in a big way um what have you kind of heard as far as like maybe who they’re targeting or how they feel about the guys they currently have on the roster yeah I mean so look I think the

Interior feel they feel good about right I mean Eric McCoy and Cesar Ruiz and and uh you know as far as that goes and then you look at where the things go from there you know they like veteran James Hurst he’s a guy that could play left guard left tackle

Trevor pinning they haven’t given up on him he’s gonna play at left tackle this this uh for upcoming uh season as far as the plan for now and I think the big question mark is is Ryan RAM and obviously that’s not a good situation and and here’s the thing that people got

To remember no matter what has happened it’s not like his knee issue is going to just magically get better it’s going to be something that going to have to manage and so maybe they’ve jumped the gun a little bit in saying that he might not play this year but it’s it’s

Something that he’s going to miss some time obviously and so I know they believe in guys like Landon young they really want to see a lot more of what they have in Nick stav um and I know that may not excite fans but I think where it leads them is when you’re

Running a Clint kuak offense you have to have the offensive line that supports it I don’t know that they have those pieces in place right now um you know and even at the owners meeting they didn’t rule out bringing a guy like Andress Pete back and and so I think that’s even

Something that could be on the table but there’s other guys like ad dalon Ryner that’s still out there they picked up oie Udo he’s a guy that’s familiar with Clint kubak and Andrew janako so I I think that they have some guys they could field a starting lineup right now

But I question the durability I question where they could be at um guys like try Turner did exceptionally uh were it was supposed to be an exceptional ad but you know got hurt early in Camp I think that’s somebody to keep an eye on and then a guy like cam Irving really

Stepped in in a big way so I think there’s some ways they could feel this in free agency but I think the draft you just can’t put a patch on this you got to really make sure that you U put a permanent fix here and try to get

Somebody I’m glad you mentioned um Dalton Risner he’s a guy that I’ve kind of been keeping my eye on for a while because I agree with you he he kind of would be a good fit here in New Orleans you got a guy like him you got Makai

Beckon out there I mean these are guys that are solid players but they may come with a higher price tag I mean what what do you think the Saints would I mean were those guys they would go after are they looking more for young guys in the

Draft well I think that should be on the table and of course mikai beckon has familiarity with John bitten the offensive line coach so that’s something that makes sense I think as you go deeper into free agency you’re going to start seeing more of the just the

One-year deals right and I think you know for a guy like you know rner Ryner you know uh he’s a guy that you know waited too long free agency he can start he is is capable offensive lineman in this league but you know again as you

You wait in this process and and you’re trying to get more money sometimes that’s not always the best thing because he didn’t have a particularly good year again the familiarity is where there with him um but you know I think him and beckon are two big targets to keep it

Tabs on and so I look I think in this offense yes they probably would have their preference in filling it with veterans um but I think you know evitably you know this is the year where if you’re going to draft somebody you can’t take the the guy from the smaller

School who hasn’t had the experience it just hasn’t worked for them and case in point look at Penning look at you know Marcus dport look at Payton Turner it’s just one of those that if you look at the draft there’s three strong tackles the the triple F fishu uh fto and and uh

The other one that ludes me at the moment but those are guys that you probably could get at 14 and be happy about that John uh John Our Guest right now John you mentioned earlier um you know if they don’t go after a big bodied receiver in the draft

Or free agency tight end as a possibility as well couple people have put out mock drafts and they’ve actually mocked uh Jem Bell the Florida state tight end to the Saints if the saints were to get a tight end they got a few of them on the roster now what does the

Future of the guys on the roster kind of look like if they go tight end in this draft well look I don’t think you can have too many I mean you know ta Hill his role I mean he’s part of the plan the offensive plans even though I know

People have talked about trading him and all this other stuff and everything I’ve been told and everything we were told that’s not going to happen and so I think he’s part of that room but you know essentially you have Jaan Johnson and Boston Maro um and so they got some

Guys from the practice sad that They Carried last year that are on there but you know free agent Market isn’t strong it’s a lot of old veterans and such and I just don’t think that’s the way did you look at and so look I’m a firm believer that that’s a position where

You can get a game changer a brock B of Theo Johnson I mean there are some extremely talented tight ends in this in this uh class right now and so I I think that’s why I say you could make the case that you know if they can address

Something at 14 at the offensive lineman then you could do 45 with another one um and then you could maybe flip it up you could maybe say take the brow Brock Bowers at 14 and then go with the offensive tackle at 45 I think there’s a

A couple of ways you can do it and the thing is you have to be able to get these two picks right and you have to get two guys that going to start for you day one because you don’t have anything until late in day three when you get in

The fifth round when you have all those fifth rounders and I just don’t think you have enough ammunition in this year’s draft to move up into the third you’re gonna have to dip into the cookie jar next year and you know it’s unfortunate boat that they’re in and and

Such but again I think the tight end room can be something but I think our the role for T Hill has yet to be determined in some aspects but I know that he’s a big part of what they want to do offensively this season uh John I

Want to ask you about the kicker signing for the Saints they signed Charlie Smith he’s the Northern Ireland goalkeeper um what have you heard about him I mean is he’s obviously competing with Blake groupy for that starting job does he have a shot to win this

Thing well I mean of course you know probably it’s a little bit premature because I think Blake groupy obviously you look at him last year he took the job for will l i mean that’s really what happened there it was neck and neck but

I think I think if you looked at it and those who were watching in training camp and paying attention saw what Ruthy was able to do I mean he has the leg he has distance he has a lot of the attributes that you like and so look I think

Competition is always something that you’re going to always Embrace and you know for the Saints it’s an interesting and intriguing Prospect I mean it’s more than just being able to kick a long field goal with the wind I mean everybody knows that there’s new kickoff rules that are in place I think that’s

Going to play a factor in it as well but look an intriguing Prospect if the signed to a three-year deal maybe it’s something there maybe it’s not but I I I think with rouy he was a much better player uh a much solid player at the end

You know towards the back half of the Season than he was early on and look I think Darren Rizzy does a fantastic job him and Phil Gano and the Special Teams and so whoever is the kicker um is going to be a good one for the Saints and I I

I think he’s going to be an intriguing one to watch kick that’s for sure John before I get you out of here I do want to switch to the def side of the ball a little bit we talked linebacker with Willie gay um I want to talk safety real

Quick because you know that’s a spot that a lot of people thought the saints were going to be more aggressive in free agency they weren’t how do you feel about you know they obviously resigned Tyron Matthew was getting up there in age but you got Jordan Howen you got

Jonathan Abrams how do you feel about those two younger guys yeah look I think with the safety group you’re seeing the market kind of tail off I mean there’s some Premier Talent still at safety that that is going to get signed before train Camp you know I think this is just kind of

This holding pattern waiting period right now and so look I I know I I’ve talked about Justin Simmons for a bit and I know people think I’m a little bit crazy but you know the familiarity with Joe woods and Marcus Robertson in the secondary you know it just depends on

What he wants to do because I’m sure he he’s a guy that can start I know he can start in a heartbeat the Saints do believe a lot in Jordan hon I think that’s one of the evaluations that got extremely right last year along with

Brian B um you know I think that’s that speaks for itself but you know Jan Abram he got a chance an opportunity we knew that Ryan was on the wall with Marcus may I mean this guy just wasn’t available and you know um that’s just the unfortunate part of his business and

So I think when you look at it there is a a need they can’t have this secondary fall off which is another reason why I don’t think they trade Marshon ladimore losing Isaac get him and stuff too but you know I think with the safety group

You know Tyron is a guy that’s the veteran that can still play at a high level and it brings a ton of leadership and so getting him in for a two-year run essentially him de Mario and Sam this is kind of the the last prep for all these

Guys and so look I I know they’re going to draft secondary in this draft that’s just how it is they’re going to add to the undrafted process I think there could be a free agent signing or two you know late in the process um much like

You know Foster moo was last year or Jimmy Graham and all those Lyn Balden they picked up from you know June um and so there’s always going to be a couple of free agents that you add and later in the process that end up paying dividends

Was good from the free throw line he ended up with 25 points to go along with seven rebounds seven assists Zion Williamson continues to be super efficient nine of 15 28 points 10 of 16 from the free throw line though that that’s somewhere that that Zion has

Always struggled outside of him though I mean herb Jones Goes four for four from the line Valen junis two for two McCollum four for four Trey Murphy five for five so nobody in your starting lineup outside of Zion Williamson missed a free throw attempt that’s big for this

Kind of give my thoughts on this hip drop tackle issue that everyone seems to be freaking out over we haven’t really mentioned it on this show Jake and T-Bob have talked a lot about the new kickoff rule which I don’t mind by the way I actually watched a couple of the UFL

Games UFL kicked off on Saturday tuned in Saturday and a little bit yesterday just to kind of see how it would work I like it there was a return for a touchdown in the UFL it kind of seemed like it made kickoff a bigger part of

The game instead of taking away from it I originally looked at it and was like hey wait a minute I don’t like you’re taking kickoff out of the game I actually enjoyed it so I’m I I don’t think that’s going to change the rules really significantly this hip drop

Tackle though seems to have a lot of people upset and you’ve seen the hip drop tackle right it’s the open field tackle the defender wraps the ball carrier kind of around the waist twists his body and the it does it puts the offensive player in an awkward position

And the argument being used is well it was only used 230 times last year how big of a part of the game is it I agree how big a part of the game is it but did it need to be banned so it was used 230 times total last year out of the

Thousands of tackles that were made out of the 230 times 25 players were injured during this play that’s 6.5% of the time an injury occurred that’s a little high but I mean it’s not astronomically higher than any other play in football and I don’t necessarily have an issue

With the hip drop tackle per se being banned because again it was used 230 times out of the 10 or 11,000 tackles that were made last year not a huge part of the game My Issue is NFL football is already so catered towards the offensive side of the football so it has nothing

To do with this tackle in particular but it makes the defender think that much more so think about this situation okay a safety is in the open field a receiver just catches the pass he’s going not only does he have to think about his angle he’s like okay I can’t hit him up

High because that’s going to be targeting I can’t throw him to the ground because it’s going to be unnecessary roughness now I can’t go around the waist area because I might get called for a hip drop tackle that that’s kind of the main issue I have with this how long until these Defenders

Start pulling up and they get hurt we saw Cameron Wake about five six years ago tear his ACL because he pulled up because that was when they were really strict on the roughing the passer penalty they since amended that I think we’re we’re going to head to something similar here not that the

Defenders are going to get injured but they’re going to pull up on these open field tackles because they don’t want a penalty I mean what happens if let’s say the Chiefs and bills are playing again Josh Allen has a really good game like he has in the pass against the Chiefs

He’s never been able to beat him though they’re winning that game Mahomes throws it to Travis kelon and the bills get called for a 15 yard penalty for a hip drop tackle with 20 seconds left and the Chiefs go on to win that game I mean that’s just that’s just

That’s a bad football right there I don’t like it again it’s not that big of a part of the game anyways you do so much to protect these players and rightfully so I understand but you can’t keep taking every single thing out that puts these players in Jeopardy because

Weekends I pretty much have to take him out at 5:30 every single morning yeah it’s awful also every morning he will not go to the bathroom unless me and Victoria both get up so she has to wake up at 5:30 so that he’ll go outside and

She has to get right back in bed so she absolutely hates it but yeah that sounds awful I mean 6:45 that is way too early to be play with a skilla on a house he had finished in two years yes and then eator in the chat says progress stops
