[Applause] a very good evening to you from Birmingham England which is the host city of the YX all England open badminton championships and uh the world’s oldest badminton tournament is celebrating 125 years of lead competition today sorry not today but this year we’re coming to you live from

The util arena in Birmingham and the venue has been hosting the tournament since 1994 so 30 years it is the second longest uh host arena in the tournament’s history Wembley Arena hosted it for 36 years and uh so this one is coming close well this is the

Seventh St stop on the HSBC bwf world tour second Super 1,000 event in a total of 31 events throughout the year all ending on the HSBC bwf World Tour finals that will be held in hjo the Chinese City in December but the eyes are all about the

Players that are going to take on the courts very very shortly here on court two we’ve got three thrilling matches for you starting with the mix doubles and an all seeded clash between the seven seeds Kim Juan Ho and Jang naon who are in some fine form taking on

Three time old England champions in Utah wanabi and Arisa pigino that’ll be followed by men singles and the 2021 old England Champion lezy J who finds this to be one of his happiest tournaments for sure based on his results and he will take on a finalist here in 2022 in

India’s luxious s and to wrap things up we’ll have men’s doubles and an unseated affair between Thailand supak jumo and kitong kedin who had a massive win outing the number four seeds yesterday taking on the inform men’s double spare at the moment I have no doubt that we’re

Going to see some very exciting badminton when Liah and yang pwan get onto the court later this evening so those are the three matches that that we will have for you on core two in this evening session focusing on the mixed doubles and the winner of this uh Korea

Japan Clash will take on either Netherlands is tbling Peak or Chinese type is Le and Lee with the likes of a Chinese opponent guaranteed in the final jangu hang Chong the number one seeds and fangang hang dong ping the number four seeds already booking their place in the

Semifinals so that’s coming up in the next couple of days but what is going to happen on the court very very shortly is that either one of Kim and Jong or watan ABI and higashino are going to book their place in the final four they’re going to fight for it that’s for

Sure as we await the players to get onto the court can tell you that uh these two pairs have met four times previously this will be their fifth meeting and they’ve already met once before this year that was at the Malaysia open and that was in the

Final Kim and Jong took on watab and higashino and it was the Japanese higher ranked pair that came through as winners in that final securing their first title of the year as a result you see here Kim wanho Jang naon leading on you toin Arisa higashida

They’ll make a long walk over to court two welcome on to coure Korea’s Kim wanho and xong naon and Japan’s Yoto Wabi and Arisa higashino so there they are you watab Arisa higashino are undoubtedly favorites here every time they step onto the court then they found great success

As I mentioned three time all England Champions they won it in 2018 and in 2021 and in 2022 so looking to add a fourth Crown which will be an amazing record for these two so the lead the head-to-head Kim wanho and Jong 3 to one against watab and higino in fact

One win game this year receive to receive as we see the co toss which side so we’ve seen Korea win the toss and Kim wanho will receive Arisa higashino will serve and they’ve chosen to stay on the far end off the court which is uh the better end in

Terms of the last few days plays as you play into the drift from the far end of the court kimho and Jong now have had a tremendous 2024 already just 24 years of age Kim Wan ho from Su on South Korea they’re enjoying a world ranking of number seven at the moment

Him and Jong naon but they’ve gone up as high as five in the world it was June of 20123 when they reached that and uh well this year they’ve had a win loss record of 16 wins to five losses that’s about 76% in terms of wins Jung n’s a year

Younger from the South Korean capital and soul in the quarterfinals they stand at four wins to one loss that one loss came last week at the French Open when they lost in the quarterfinals looking at how they’ve gotten to the quarterfinals here at the O England they beat lindman and woo in

Straight games 32 minutes and then Terry he and Jessica tan of Singapore also in straights 2114 2115 and 35 minutes so spent just over an hour on court so far have saved all their energy for this match I’m sure cuz they will certainly need it you to watab 26y Old left-hander

From Tokyo Japan they’re currently ranked number three in the world alongside orisa higashino of course they have been former world number ones November of 2022 is when they reach the top of the summit have a win loss record of 9 to2 nine wins to two losses it’s about

82% win record which is pretty impressive Hara hio from IA maizawa in Japan and in the quarterfinals I have to say it’s not great reading one win to two losses so the quarterfinal has been a bit of a hiccup stage for them round one they beat yam masida and shoya their

Teammates 212 216 in 36 minutes and then Reginal Lee and an Yao in round two and that was also in straight games in just over half an hour the empire for this match is Nicola Reed from England and she’ll be joined in the service judges Chair by her compatriot David Evans

Those are your officials for this mixed doubles match so w and higino obviously securing their first win over the Koreans this year when they beat them in the Malaysia open Final in straight games 2118 2115 last year they met three times at the Sudan cup in the group stage ker W 19 21

215 215 and then all England last year these two met as well in the second round and uh unfortunately watab in Arisa hio had to retire against the Korean bear at 2123 7113 down German open 2023 second round and it was Kim and Jong who won in straight games there

As well so will what abin higino continue their winning Trend or will the Koreans get back on top once again we’re about to find out here ladies and gentlemen on my right UT wanabi and Arisa higashino Japan on my left Kim wanho and JN n Ker Arisa higashino to serve to Kim wanho

Love all play so Arisa higashino will serve as we get this quarterfinal [Applause] Going service over one service era and outside Nice over the head net shot from Jong she’s going to be have she’s going to have to be on the top of her game J [Applause] N it’s landed out three so that’s uh a quick three love lead for the career Ian service over J putting watab and higino on the [Applause] Scoreboard oh she catches the line lovely return service over four well last week as I was saying at the French Open they were handed their first quarterfinal defeat of the Year Kim and Jong that was at the hands of fangang and hangi oh lovely Kill [Applause] Shot 51 puts it

Nicely into the open space on the right hand side of the Court well defended but kho quick to follow up in fact he ran cross courau on the follow up when higashino defensive backand came straight down he read that well well 61 now so in France it was a Chinese

Opponent that uh handed them their first quarterfinal loss was in straight games and interestingly watab hio also exited in Paris at the hands of Chinese opponents J and we in straight games at the quarterfinal stage so looking to put that behind them these two pairs well the smash has been potent for

Korea service over 72 it’s landed out eight two tried the slower drop watch ABI here comes the smash does those service over 38 deceptive drop so well jumps really high opens up his body to where you know the opponent will feel like there’s a smash coming and instead right at the last

Minute chooses to go for the drop good serve 4 it tight and close to the [Applause] Net another good 58 low serves working for the Japanese at the moment he try to play it a little bit across the net so very quickly the Japanese have closed the gap down to just two points it’s four in a row for them they were two8 down not so long ago

Well defended by Jong but the followup proved too much she had to seven8 save from quite a low position there and then by the time she found her composure back the shuffle was already coming at her onepoint [Applause] game instinctive reactions feel like Jong is being uh

Eight oh targeted here a little bit by wat and higushi now having to defend and then that drop shot proved a little too far in the end for J Nan that one [Applause] there so it’s eight all back on level terms six straight points for the number two seeds

Asol you see there in the Japanese coaching setup Endo watab Endo hioki Endo who is wat’s former men’s doubles partner love this Smash and uh next to him of course the doubles coach the mixed doubles coach Jeremy gun look at that smash straight down One quick to make sure he covered Jong there Midway through the rally 9 all he’s going to have to have her back a few times here she is bearing the brunt of Japanese play lovely put away finds the corner Arisa 10 n and now they once again ahead just the one-point [Applause] lead

Comes a smash yeah it was a loose lift of the net service over one ho completely capitalized on that and all they have honestly been in some Sublime form playing in their six tournament Kim and Jong this year reach the final of the Malaysia open and the German

Open semi-final India open and Indonesia Masters ready quarterfinal of course in France Pushed to the back a bit and this time it was higino who over 111 opted for the body shot aimed at Jong and it is 1110 at the break to the Japanese had 9 Minutes of [Applause] play [Applause] C two 20 seconds C two 20 [Applause] [Applause] seconds so back on court ready to resume this opening game which started off really well for the Koreans but the Japanese went on a seven-point run to make sure that they had the lead at the break nice low serve from Wabi there yeah right down the

Middle 12 well struck jump smash from Utah watab something that we love to [Applause] see Oh brilliant absolutely brilliant What Again 13 mixing it up so well now have a three-point [Applause] [Applause] lead well spotted by Jong service over 1113 Space Between the Lines [Applause] well see the constant conversation between points between the Korean pair and their coach this time again but he made it Kim one ho but it’s the constant barrage that’s coming from the Japanese [Applause] end catching the

Koreans in awkward positions time and time again we talked about whatab hino’s quarterfinal exit in front the other quarterfinal loss was at the India open where they lost in three games to poar nuk and Tera tanachai playing in their fourth Tournament of 2024 are Wabo they won that Malaysia open title and

Then that was a quarterfinal win for them 124 on route to the Title [Applause] oh lovely just missed it though it’s called out 13 14 it was the right idea she made that run across the net pigino and just when she was putting it away hit it a little too long back to a onepoint game make it two service over 15 coming

Off Kim Wan Ho’s ret so they’re just about staying ahead finding that back caught nicely UT wat 163 they’re moving the shuttle around really well between them watchin higashino playing left to [Applause] right three-point lead [Applause] Lucky persisting with the left hand side of the court and then following up with a straight down the middle smash between the two Koreans dragged both the Koreans onto the left hand side well fought out [Applause] Point oh what a shot he catches the top of the tape and it rolls over that is the tightest of net shots Jong naon who was well aware just couldn’t get close enough she was expecting the net shot but just not as close it was going to be fivepoint

Lead three away from uh taking the opening game [Applause] Seem a little subdued now Kim and Jong not as energetic as when this opening game first started I think the Japanese bear have managed to service over 14 keep them quiet go she defended that with everything kushino nice rally and it was a tight net roll from kiman ho this

Time he’s decided to clear up front a little bit more 27 shots that that one k still a four-point lead two away from uh taking this opening [Applause] game one well left in the end by was ABI keeping his eye on the shuttle and that sets up five game points Here yeah game put away confidently by Arisa higino goes for the kill at the end there and it’s the number two seeds who have the opening game 21 2115 they really went on the charge in the latter half of this opening game just 18 minutes played and they have the advantage [Applause] oh

[Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Spe C two 2 seconds C two 20 [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] seconds so time now for game two and this second is a must win for the number seven seeds Kim Jong we will be hoping that the change of ends will do them some good definitely need restart service over trailing for a lot long part of that opening [Applause] game both went for that is well anticipated by Utah watch ABI who got himself one quickly onto that left hand side of the [Applause]

Court she was pushed to the back Jung n look at that two one there did well to defend but higashino too strong from the net he’s too steep come on [Applause] they’ve got to try and service over keep bringing the shuffle down Kim and [Applause] Jong make it difficult

For higashino and wat anabi to play from their abdomen area [Applause] too good it was a service over poor lift at the net from Jung now just look at that height watab be killing it [Applause] off eighth all England appearance for you guab and Arisa higashino debuted in

2017 three titles as I said in earlier on got to the final in 2019 as well they lost out to J and hang Chong then so four finals here at all England in seven previous appearances last year though they exited in the second round because they had to retire with injury to Wabi

And it was in the second round against the pair opposite Them smart play to keep it close to Kim’s [Applause] body almost near hip level [Applause] there [Applause] and the pressure is building errors coming off the Korean records now four straight points for Japan come in yeah it was good rotation from Kim and Jong service over kimho mve towards the back court Jong taking her place in the front of net area they didn’t have to use that position kimano smash too strong 4 six just C from the back line on that return J [Applause]

Now he just jumped on that wat kept a flat as [Applause] well service over seeing some good serves in this match especially the low ones really close to the net with those serves she missed it extraordinary he made the save from the ground and then Arisa higashino read it but then just missed

It found the net instead it’s a r smile from [Applause] Hendo this is a one-point game Koreans looking to get back into this utab has something to say about it service over 8 six good job from that back court area hasn’t had to jump and create like super steep smashes it’s been effective enough well defended Again by Kim Juan Ho and

That time it lands out service over 78 good defensive showing from the Korean PIR seven seeds making their second all England appearance got to the semi-finals last year for losing to their teammates C and CH the world champions that’s gone wide as well so it’s level scores [Applause] now Kim and Jong

Have done well to catch up were two six down at one point eight all [Applause] beautifully put away again you watch going cross finding that corner just nudging the shuttle over his opponents they continue to stay ahead brilliant they taking turns and taking turns to find the different corners on the back Court service over 9 10 [Applause] Nice net roll yeah well left they both made the jump 10 all they decided that it was heading long 10 near the mid game break service over service ER hands Japan the advantage 1110 at the break very similar to how the opening game play out you’ve had 11 minutes of play in

This second [Applause] game c two 20 seconds C two 20 [Applause] Seconds coach return to your Chairs watchin higashino a game and a point up as we resume the second game this quarterfinal [Applause] that is superb on the back hand 12 10 he catches the back line with the defensive lift service over [Applause] [Applause] 112 defending out of their skins here career he’s just proving too much to contain the Japanese attack shot after shot after [Applause] [Applause] shot service over 12 you can tell that heino and watch are well aware of the record that the Koreans have against them and certainly tense about holding on to this [Applause] lead Tim Ron challenges challenge it out it’s been called out first challenge off this evening session

Yeah it is out so an unsuccessful challenge by Kim W CH unsuccessful One Challenge remaining challenge remaining service over it’s a twoo lead for play the number two seeds [Applause] again that’s a really high lift that’s much better from Kim and Jong it was well thought out over 13 14 slower smash from Kim which was defended but J naun was there to follow [Applause] up [Applause] still going it just misses UT wanabi 140 kept it flat on the defense but that

Final lift he was looking for the corner corner that has worked really well for him before unfortunately this time made the error so 14 Alla [Applause] [Applause] Ready sped it up service over directing it to jong’s back Well they’ve had the lead pretty much since one all in this second game they’ve held on here Koreans leveled the score a few times haven’t been able to take the lead yet since 10 oh beautiful that’s a stunning shot 16 14 that’s Arisa higino showing her Mastery at the [Applause] Net Jong n’s hurt just wiping herself down maybe she’s grazed herself a little bit looked at her hand couple of times grimacing a little [Applause] [Applause] bit nice return service over keeps it low 15 16 also gets higino to move a couple of steps in responding [Applause] Kim one ho defending nonstop well worked by the Koreans Going Back to Basics here by just playing more defensively now level scores [Applause] again nice redirection this is impressive back from both pairs high lift yeah got it out of the way I think that was what he intended to do utab with

That high lift he knew Kim one ho would try and or would be tempted to smash it away but he hit too hard and so they go back on top once more to John John to receive the jump now needs to [Applause] receive well [Applause] [Applause] again oh super this time pigino from the mid quar area goes for the flatter smash Cross Court as well on the third time so now three points away from a place in the semifinals second semi-final of 2024 beckons watab and [Applause] higashino Nice tumbling return from kiman ho very very nice from it was that drop shot at the net did the trick that one and Kim H simply had to put the shuttle away they’re not going down without a fight that’s for sure have the quality and the skills to

Still take this away from the Japanese had one game or one match that’s gone to three games and that was at the Sudan cup and uh Kim and Jong bounced back from a game down 1921 to win 2115 215 so done it before certainly do it again little too loose of the

Serve service over was the best of serves in a crunt Situation they’ve just figured it out really well what higashino the clan is working as far as the Japanese are concerned it sets up three match points now Wabi from the back coat higashino standing strong in the front just defending all the smashes what here comes the attack

Again oh they just just survived that Jung na trying to cross net makes a mistake and it’s a big relief for watab and higashino because they clinch the match on their first match point opportunity what a fantastic performance by the number two seeds who continue this impressive form

Haven’t dropped a game yet at the old England and that was a tense rally in the end a mistake from Jang naun at the net is what hands them the match But they’ll take it a fifth all England semi-final for Utah wanabi and Arisa higashino 2115 2117 in 41 Minutes [Applause] oh oh [Applause] Wa Than [Applause] Yeah While you’re watching live coverage of the qu final action that’s uh taking place here on court two at the util leader arena in Birmingham we’ve had mixed doubles and now we move on to men’s singles next and that’s Malaysia’s Ley J the 2021 o England Champion taking

On Lu of India the 2022 finalist here at all England it is an unseated Affair and the men’s singles as you see there that draw is wide open for anyone

  1. I swear Watanabe is the most annoying player to defend against. The freedom of able to switch the shot from smash, clear, and drop seamlessly makes positioning against him so hard. The dude even has the speed to cover the court in case of nasty returns.

  2. Higashino must reduce her own unforced errors otherwise it’s difficult to play on even they both producing many terrific shots ! Watanabe just close to perfect today
