If you’ve been watching the channel recently you know I’ve been talking an awful lot about what your hands and wrists should be doing during a golf swing whether you’re chipping putting pitching uh or making a full swing with a driver and one of the things which actually happens when you start to

Actively use your hands and releasing the club in the way I want you to do which is really accelerating the club that back down and through the golf ball you are obviously creating forces which have to be balanced bed out in your swing and I think a lot of you might be

Struggling simply because you are creating new forces which you aren’t balancing out and balancing out these forces is simply a question of using the ground and on your legs to actually counteract the pressure that you’re applying to the club what I’m talking about here is really pretty simple um if

You only had one leg and you swung the club forcefully down to the ground it would be difficult to keep your balance the pressure you’re applying with the club to the ground will tend to kind of make you tilt backwards and if you think about it this is happening quite a lot

To you in your swing a lot of you have actually heard youve kind of got to get over to your lead side as quickly as possible but how do you get over to your lead side without using your Trail leg and really the trail leg is the big

Secret um in a golf swing of getting this balance correctly because even if you you are chipping a ball or pitching a ball and starting with your weight in your lead side when you start the downswing you will have to apply pressure with your Trail foot to the

Ground in order to stop yourself from falling backwards or tilting backwards during the downswing and I think this is a problem that an awful lot of you are having especially if you find yourself kind of almost taking a step back when you’re making a full swing so today it’s

All about basically how can you actually get a feeling for this and what should the feeling be well it’s all really about balance when you press down with your arms you have to press up with your feet and I would say a very specific part of your foot if you think about

Putting applying pressure to the ground with the ball of your big toe and not just by pressing down with your foot but by actually twisting your foot at the same time almost if as if you were putting out a l cigarettes uh on the ground you going to

Squash it into the ground you see how my trail heel kind of TW comes off the ground and twists a little bit outwards um this is actually helping my hips to rotate at the same time kind of moving the pressure into my lead side and what

I’m going to do is I’m going going to start that as I start the down swing so as I start to swing the club down I’m applying pressure to my trail leg so you can actually see it straightening slightly if you’re still chunking the ball a little bit you might even have to

Have the feeling of applying pressure to the ground before you start down with your hands this is where golf is really difficult to explain because all of you have got different perceptions of what you’re doing your intention is not always the same as what you are actually

Doing feel and real are different so one of you might have the feeling of starting actively to press down with the hands and then applying Force to the ground in this way another one might have a feeling of just a moment before they start down with their hands they

Are pressing into the ground to prepare their body for this Force which is going to come and yet another one of you might have the feeling of doing it at the identical time at exactly the same time it really doesn’t matter as long as it works it’s a good idea to maybe get

Yourself a camera or set up your mobile device so that you can actually watch yourself when you’re practicing this you will however get a very good feedback simply between the interaction between the club head and the dirt if you are still catching the ground or toping the Balon it’s most likely that you’re

Moving around too much but sometimes it’s nice to get that confirmation uh from the video so that you know okay I can actually apply even more pressure to the ground because I’m still not doing it enough and that is really quite surprising sometimes how much pressure you actually do have to

Apply with your Trail leg even if you are already waiting your lead for and this becomes even more uh a case um when you are hitting longer shots as soon as I start to hinge the wrist I am releasing far more energy towards the ground far more pressure and I’m going

To need far more pressure out of the ground to keep my body stable during the swing and this twisting MO that I’m doing with my foot well yeah you guessed it that’s what’s actually starting the hip rotation and helping the hips round which obviously the hips

Can then also help with can you do this too much well of course you can it’s all about balance if you start too early start rotating and pushing off and you haven’t actually got the club down then you’re going to start coming from the outside you’re going to start cutting

Across the golf ball and similarly if you aren’t applying enough pressure you’re going to start tilting back he going to start coming maybe too much from the inside but you’re going to get hopefully feedback about that simply from your contact with the ground and also with the direction that the golf

Ball then flies when you hit it but I really do believe that just getting this reaction force um on your side being aware of what you’ve got to be doing when you’re swinging a golf club is maybe one of the keys to better striking and also to better shots um on the golf

Course simply because you are now allowing yourself to almost stamp into the ground at the same time as hitting down through the golf ball and this should hopefully complete the puzzle for you if it does I expect a like maybe maybe even a subscription if it doesn’t

Wait for the next one maybe I found another trick see you then Bye-bye

  1. Excellent video Jonathan on how the vertical force can transform the golf swing! In viewing this video Jonathan, I can see where balance is key with the upper half and lower half of the body in order to produce good shots. I know that I am a victim at times when this balance is not there in my swing and errant shots are the result! Well Done Jonathan!!! Always look forward to your input!

  2. Great video and insight!

What helps (@1:31) me to get back to my lead leg in transition is to feel that my right heel moves pushes back toward the 5oclock position. This ground force helps me perfectly to get back to the left while my right leg "pushes" the right hip through impact.
