The Steelers Quarterback Room: The Blackups, and March Madness has Arrived, Plus IYHH and Voicemails

Bomani Jones starts the show by discussing the recent quarterback changes in the NFL, specifically when it comes to the back ups for certain teams. The Browns brought in Jameis Winston to back up Deshaun Watson, the Steelers brought in both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. What does this say about the NFL and the idea of the Blackups? Then following Selection Sunday, Bomani talks about March Madness and why the mens tournament doesn’t have the same juice as the woman’s tournament. Finally another round of If You Haven’t Heard and your voicemails about the time you went up against a professional athlete when you were playing sports. #justinfields #russellwilson #steelers #jameiswinston #deshaunwatson #marchmadness #selectionsunday

Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the right time a wave sports and entertainment original presented by prize pick my name is bman Jones thanks for listening wherever you get your podcast thanks for watching us on YouTube subscribe like rate US review us give us five stars you only give us

Stars I’m inclined to believe you are a hater uh we will get into uh the NCAA tournament in just a little bit but sometimes like all right so I had this thing happen kind of over the course of the weekend where you know we talk about

Stuff here I talk about stuff on the tweets just a little bit but like by and large when I talk about stuff on the tweets it’s largely just us homies talking about it but then of course you know the Bots and all the cuckoo for Coco Puffs join in and then everything

Turn into a problem but sometimes I feel like I got a thing that I talk about and to me I get why sometimes these things can feel controversial to other people but they seem perfectly normal to me and we have a stretch where we going through and we having a conversation about a

Thing and the thing ain’t a thing because we’ve been talking about the thing for a long time but then next thing you know the thing in the hands of the wrong people and not a thing get the thing it in ways that I don’t think that

It should be thinging right so for a long time I have been talking about this thing and I always make this point in so funny that people don’t get this that the first person I ever saw point this out was Jason Whitlock and he pointed

This out um in the Arts and there was this stretch where the Jacksonville Jaguars had Byron left witch at quarterback his backup was David gard and then his backup I think was Quinn Gray but you could convince me that Cleo lemon was involved in this anyway the

General manager at the time was James sha Harris who is a black quarterback and Pioneer and basically cuz Jacksonville in order to stop the locals from being all over the black quarterback’s back at every turn and going to the backup you just made his backup black and if you had to make his

Backup black and then that way you got the people to calm down and everybody kind of lol’s and Chuckles about it and then you kind of think about it a little bit and you understand it cuz those of us who grew up in times in the early days of black quarterbacking understand

How it used to be and when I say the early days of black quarterback and for example I grew up in Houston and the white folks was calling for Cody Carls all day every day while they had warm Moon playing quarterback if you were in Charlotte during the Cam Newton era you

Were very aware of the Derek Anderson Hive and it’s funny because when I bring this up very often we have people who come up and swear up and down that we just making this up about the Derek Anderson Cam Newton thing and you got to remember man I know people that work in

Radio dog they was getting their fingers on the pulse and people calling up for Derrick Anderson all the time you could see it on the internet you could hear it there was a hive like like the the the idea of the black quarterback now is not

Quite as provocative as it was even 10 years ago but it’s still like it still gets people going man it’s still a thing and so some people have figured out or at least it appears have figured out that the best way to make sure that the black quarterback gets a fair shake from

The Faithful is to not give no alternative to bring him in cuz I feel like in many of these cases them white folks feel like having a black backup quarter back is like not having no backup quarterback at all they don’t really care you know what I’m saying

Like it’s just like all right cool whatever you just go figure that out like they treat the backup quarterback like they would if it was like John Elway right who had the same backup quarterback for damn near his whole career to start it off because it ain’t matter who the backup quarterback is

Right he just a placeholder you get where I’m coming from so anyway we had been talking about this for a while um and different teams having their black ups and for the longest I have been talking about the Cleveland Browns because as soon as they went and got

Deshawn Watson’s old nasty ass they just ran a parade in man they was bringing all the black quarterbacks in everybody got a try out man I think Charlie bats might have knocked off some dust and gone in there and tried it out like I’m going to be honest with you it felt like

If the Cleveland Browns didn’t give your black ass a call did you even quarterback bro it’s entirely possible man they might have called Tommy Fraser Jamal Holloway them brothers that ran the option right anybody had a chance to come on in here and make it happen cuz

Like you know they knew that when they got old nasty ass Deshawn Watson that think people might get a little uncomfortable for a number of reasons and it the guaranteed contract wasn’t going to be enough right but but they slipped they slipped for a brief moment for a brief moment they slipped and

Somehow some way somebody got the bright idea to bring Joe flacko in there and they brought Joe flacko in there and Joe flacko started winning them games and as long as Deshawn Watson had guaranteed money on that contract Joe Flaco had to go somewhere else somewhere else there

Was there was no more room for Joe Flaco and let me tell you who I am certain certain I’m not making this up I am certain is perfectly aware of that and that is the Cleveland Browns they knew that that that that couldn’t happen they

Knew they couldn’t no no no he had to go he had to go he he he had to be done in this town right like no they had to get him out of there like that’s where it went but we have been talking about this forever for the longest

Right and so one day uh the dude Anthony Lima he hosts uh some radio up there in Cleveland and he apparently found my tape to be entertaining and so he clipped some of it out and sent it out on the internet and I don’t know if you

Know how the reaction to it went but I’ll just tell you that I had to send that man a tweet that said that if your goal was to find out the most humorless people in your audience I guess this was a success cuz all it was was just people

You know they calling me the racist and everything else and they saying I got a problem with it and I’m like bro I’m just telling you what the game is right I think it’s kind of funny that’s all it is but they get mad and then this dude

That used to work at a place that I used to work at then he Jump On It decide cuz like I owned this website and he decided that at that website that they going they need to make a thing out of this and I’m like damn man we had so much fun

With this for so long and now we not going to be able to have no fun with this no more like this happens from time to time with something out grows itself for example I used to have some thoughts about a certain musical genius and like

Why he wore sunglasses you know what I’m saying like some of y’all thought he wore them for one reason I came to realize that maybe he just felt like wearing sunglasses you know what I mean and so like people started going a little too far with it I got a

Few too many phone calls about it and so I had to step back and let everybody have it right like I just couldn’t do that no more it took on a life of his own right like this is this is this this is the unfortunate other side of being a

Taste maker like your boy but anyway right so I decided to let that go but with this one like sometimes people just take it and twist it and I’m like damn I don’t even want to do this no more right it don’t feel good I don’t I don’t

Want to but but in this case I got to admit I didn’t really want to give it up because I’m not being like totally serious but I’m not being unserious but once the the the the once the the the humorless white people show up then it turned into all kinds of

Other things and I just don’t know if I want you know what I mean like I just don’t know if I want to do that no more I just don’t know if I want to but anyway fast forward a little bit and the Steelers had gone and gotten Russell

Wilson okay so Russell Wilson is now a quarterback for the Steelers they told him he was going to be the starting quarterback apparently Kenny picket thought he was going to be the starting quarterback and after they brought Russell Wilson in to be the starting quarterback he told them that he would

Prefer to play somewhere else and I’ve got to say that young man has some mother [ __ ] G are you kidding me you got the nerve to be in here what are you talking about and on top of that the thing that got me was what about Russ see he don’t be

Listening to me because if he had been listening to me with what I was talking about he would understand Russell Wilson come out there and struggle for a little bit white man and you going to be the most popular man back in town I done seen so many white dudes get their

Reputations laundered just by not no more you remember that time that the Bears gave Mike Glennon a big free agent contract and all he did was stink and then play behind the black dude you remember that he stunk they goty jamus he didn’t play and then somebody wanted

Him to be the starter even though the last time we had seen him play he stunk right so Kenny picket all you had to do was be white put on a baseball cap look attentive take notes get out there on that clipboard look like you reading some stuff come over to the sideline

Break out that little tablet show show your mans what it was that he was supposed to be looking to you might have got your job back right then and there right I mean I’ve seen Kurt Cousins have these opportunities and when he was in Washington that’s how it went got up

There stunk to high heaven sat down but man they want they want to Rober out of there dog brought him in there they weathered some storm with him and then boom now Kurt cousin D made $489 million like it was all right there for you

Kenny pick it but the ball be like I want to go somewhere else and now you behind Jaylen Herz and you got to understand you might get a similar situation over there but it’s going to take a while that dude took them d a Super Bowl right okay but if you was

Going to play that game you should have played that game right where you was at but anyway so then Russell Wilson is the Steelers quarterback and then they went and basically it sound like the Bears had to put Justin fields on the curb with a sign that says you can have

It cuz they got that dude for a pick in 2025 okay 2025 y’all ever see that episode of Seinfeld where he got a ballet driver had incredibly terrible body Oda and left his car stanking and then by the end he just threw the keys at somebody

And somebody got that got the keys and they got in the car and they stunk so bad that they got out and it was a BMW you remember that maybe that’s it with Justin Fields is it possible that he musty I mean I’ve seen some criticisms

Of his play or whatever but the fact that they had to give him away for a conditional 2025 first round pick I’m sorry it just feels like that that’s wow I saw a report though that say something to the effect of Pittsburgh is where he wanted to go and the Bears had other

Offers but instead they decided to do right by Justin fields and so they sent him to the Steelers and I’m not saying that that’s a lie but I ain’t saying that it’s a true right like that that that sounds like the kind of thing that makes everybody involved look good I mean

Maybe that’s exactly how it went like I say maybe not a lie I’m not guaranteeing that it’s the TR but anyway that meant that you got Russell Wilson and then behind him you got Justin Fields you can pull this up you can look this up on the

Internet man this the wildest thing in the world uh the NFC North has four teams the starting quarterbacks in the NFC North are Russell Wilson Lamar Jackson uh the nasty man and Joe burrow okay AFC North my bad fellas AFC North all right so I gave you all the four

Right that still holds Russell Wilson Lamar Jackson uh and the nasty man and Joe burrow okay Sean I I already forgot who who it is that’s backing up um that’s backing up Joe burrow now it ain’t the Peter man um is it AJ McCarron I know that

Peterman’s still in the league let me look this up right now yes yeah which one of them is it cuz I just know this the the the the the the people behind like the the the quarterback dep Jake Browning that’s right I forgot about him Jake Browning now the dep chart for the

Rest of them one of them they dep chart look like look like b b Devo it’s another one they [ __ ] look like troop um the other then then there’s one more they out here looking like uh what you call them what you call them uh uh Onyx

Like it’s just it’s just that’s just all it is then over here it’s uh they hauling notes over there Joe burrow out there with them shades on you know what I’m saying like like dabbling doing a little doing a little dabble doing a little dabble right so like I wanted to

I wanted to leave this whole thing alone because it was just like it was going to give me in too much trouble too many people without I not nearly enough of a sense of humor W going to be able to appreciate what your boy was talking about and then that whole division went

Up there and was like see Boby noan you know the whole division went and did that Kyler Murray they went and got Desmond Ritter behind him that’s how they they got that boy’s back and it’s so funny CU I got on Twitter and said on Twitter when they got Desmond Ritter

That’s how you show Kyler Murray you believe in him exclamation point and all I had was a bunch of people come in and tell me that Desmond Ritter was sorry and that was exactly the point that I was making you argumentive [ __ ] was want to get on no matter what just

Looking for a fight but you agreed with me you agreed with me that’s right they went and told Kyler Murray’s little last no you good I know what you’ve been reading in the paper no we didn’t get a high enough draft pick you straight we going to get you a wide receiver right

Don’t don’t ask me to say his name I’m not sure which one you know what I’m saying but we going to get you a wide receiver don’t you worry about who behind you cuz I don’t know if you saw Desmond Ritter play or not but that boy

Is cheeks cheeks I tell you cheeks that’s it Pete Carroll I’m starting to believe that Pete Carroll was really like the biggest fan of Gino Smith I know they had Drew lock in there last year but P Carol got out of there and they went and made a trade to go get Sam

How they they don’t believe Gino they don’t believe they don’t believe in Indianapolis I can’t tell whether or not uh stain St Shane Sten is naive or whatever but it’s the second time he’s tried this with Anthony Richardson he had Gard the menu last year so you can

Put gardam mitu behind him cuz Gard mitu going to get in there and play for a little while and then he going to start doing [ __ ] to make you remember why he a backup but they just went and got Joe flacko in there to play behind Anthony

Richardson come on man don’t do that to that dude don’t do that man I mean I know what you think and I understand why you feel like hey man he’s a capable backup but y’all gave him a no no no you’re not supposed to do that you’re

Not supposed to do that let me let me go look out here and see what was possible you know what I’m saying and uh cuz look if you go to the backup quarterback you probably going to lose anyway but uh who’s some cats they could have got out

There like you like maybe they need to do this like an internship program right and go get some cats that was called in college but never really got a try y’all remember Chucky Keaton he used to play at Utah State he from htown why don’t

You why a y’all call him up um see what see what he could do right see what that t g uh no sorry about that Sean um W I feel like my parents in that moment Tyrod Taylor he’s still out there did the Giants keep him

Tyrod Taylor it says he is a American football quarterback for the Jets you see how funny that is oh wow wow interesting he might have to play some games um I’mma tell you also right now Green Bay Packers I know you guys seem real happy with Jordan love right now

Y’all better get out here in these streets and uh and start thinking a little bit more about what it is that you doing see who’s out here in this draft and maybe you can get in like the fourth or fifth round or something like that but that’s Sean Clifford no no no

That’s a distraction waiting to happen baby just you watch just you watch I also had people get mad on me on Twitter about this one and they think I a’t know what I was talking about and I may have been a little Hasty in this tweet I

Admit but I said that uh look and I tell Mike tobl be like give me two black quarterbacks and I’m the black coach come on man you asking for a lot out of them people now maybe they done had a couple of decades to get used to bike

Toblin so this whole thing isn’t quite as jarring as it would be in some other places but like I said with gerro mayo no brother I don’t know if you want to be going to get no JT and Daniels to bring oh I they went have got Jobe

Procento right just in case they prepared themselves they GNA give that young man whoever starting give him a good opportunity but with Tomlin I mean I feel like that’s the kind of thing you do at your last day at work kind of like how our city o hall right before they

Cancel his show had farod as a guest like I feel like that’s the when you when you stack out the death trbe with black black dudes and you the black dude I’m sorry it don’t feel like you think you going to be there that long especially with neither one of them dudes is

Good yeah we didn’t get to that part like Russell Wilson I don’t know if he is bad but I feel confident saying he is not good Justin Fields just shown flashes Justin Fields has not been good and I’m sorry right maybe I’m just not downal for my people in the right way

But my black ass is not about to let two mediocre black dudes get me run out of my job if I want to stay like if this a job I want to keep no no no we going to have to go about this way no sir but hey man maybe Mike

To don’t want to do this no more that is entirely possible but I tell you this they come out here and do something like start two and five start three and six they ain’t going to know who to be mad at but they going to be real mad and

It’s going to be enough to go Around Sean I have to say that that one was a lot of fun I enjoyed myself a great deal yeah it’s uh the the chat’s obviously loving it and for those who have missed it uh make sure you just rewatch Bo doing a whole monologue on

The as you call it the Black Ops the Black Ops that’s right by the way you don’t you don’t get nervous when I do that do you like normally it t there’s a I guess we’ve been doing this now for almost six months but like it’s a it’s a

Process you know what I’m saying my my people tend to get you know get a little nervous when I start when when I when I talk like this you know is you good you straight I I mean I’m not the one saying it so I’m you know I’m in the clear oh

Oh okay got it got it got it you just don’t care about me it’s cool no I I support you I support you throughout everything but obviously the blood is not on my hands at times well well no the thing is I worked for a mouse for 20

Years you know what I’m saying like there’s reasons to be nervous at some of these other places y’all just be out here like oh okay cool we’ll be straight and if not you feel like you’ll still have a job I’m taking all y’all down with me just so you know like I just

Want to make I just want to make sure you feel right now that you need to have if you don’t feel like you need to look out for your boy don’t you worry if you think I’m leaving here alone you’ve been smoking rocks anyway NCAA tournaments coming up

Interesting thing and I’m throwing this out here this part as a thought exercise because I was thinking about it uh coming in and I have talked about how the names of the women’s game right now are bigger than the names of the men’s game um you know like when we start

Talking about the famous people and like the matchups that we’re looking for and the personality and coaching and everything else and the familiarity so forth and so on the women’s game has the men’s Game beat and I’ve said for a while that I felt like last year’s

Tournament was a bit of an inflection point at least in terms of the popularity of women’s basketball V IV men’s basketball in college at this point and I don’t really have numbers to back it up I’d like to see the hypotheses um tested a little bit more

About just how popular like we’ve seen some things on some television numbers in terms of people watching games and that women’s games are starting to Draw Bigger numbers on national television and men’s games in many cases like I think that’s really interesting but I raise another question and I think that

This is a very important one which is what about viewing interest in the women’s tournament and what I mean by that is the NCAA tournament starts this week and I know little to nothing about what’s going on in men’s college basketball but it doesn’t change the fact that the tournament is coming up

Now I am a person who would go into the tournament knowing everything about everybody and doing these brackets and all of this stuff right like I was that guy for a very very very long time I’m not really that dude at this point I’m not really capable of being that dude at

This point but I recognize that most people aren’t that dude and they still went and they watched the tournament and the reason that they went and watched the tournament was because that’s what they did like at this time of year this is what we do we watch the tournament like

To me the opening round the first two rounds of the tournament they ain’t hitting like they used to and they not going to hit like they used to honestly because they do a much better job now of seating these teams so the upset potential is not quite what it was

Before like we have more information so the seating process is going to wind up being better um all of that stuff but sweet 16 and Elite 8 weekend man that is year annually that’s as good as it get that those games and there aren’t a zillion games so you can really keep up

With all of them the elite a games there only one on at a time like those right there are normally hitters and they go and you watch them again not necessarily who’s play because of who’s playing in them but just because they’re being played and so as much as I talk about

The inflection point um with interest in the women’s tournament a lot of that interest last year was tied to Big names and this year is also like very much tied like kayln Clark for example is you know the biggest of names but then when you start talking about programs and

Stuff it’s tied there are we at a point or where will they get to that point where we watching the Elite 8 and the sweet 16 in that same way and I’m not simply talking about people who are really into women’s basketball I’m talking about people who just ain’t

Really into it like that but this is what they do right now somebody in theuh chat says you don’t watch sports anymore becoming very repetitive no I watch sports I watch lots of sports college basketball doesn’t come up at my job anymore like I used to have jobs for

College basketball came up it only really comes up now otherwise like it just doesn’t like Sean we have been doing this show throughout the college basketball season can you think of a time that you’ve been like oh wow I thought we were going to talk about college ball this week it it

Was only the the shiref face that was the only opportunity where we had to talk about it and that was a essentially an offc Court incident yeah but it doesn’t like it does not have the role in the National sporting Z Guist that it used to have

But that was just kind of a like Curious thing that I had I will say I did have something that made me kind of nostalgic for it all um I got a group chat with my buddies in North Carolina and they all uh Carolina fans and my manad sent a

Text into the chat that said that everybody on the team except RJ has that booty leemon tonight and I was like oh well let me go turn on the game and so it’s NC State and North Carolina in the ACC Championship and so for those of you

Don’t really know that much about how North Carolina gets down that Duke Carolina thing is always a thing and it’s such a huge rivalry nationally because the teams are always good um but while there is a 247 level of hatred that North Carolina has toward duke it pales in comparison to what

North Carolina State fans feel about North Carolina in in every way that you could possibly imagine um State B Carolina to win the ACC tournament for the first time since 1987 and I cannot imagine that there is a anything going on in this world that could ever make a bunch of people

Happier than State beating Carolina in the ACC Championship they did a 30 for30 on that 1983 NC State team that won the national championship and somebody told me that they went to a screening for that 30 for30 and as I recall in the 83 ACC Tournament final State beat Carolina

And that got a bigger round of applause than when they won the National Championship you guys have got to understand the ways that rivalries work like Duke fans try to come back at Carolina fans and be like oh you so happy about beating us in the tournament

Coach K’s last game you care more about that than winning a national championship you are goddamn right that is exactly how these things work and I was like I have things that happened I’m like damn I wish I was inur for this I can only imagine what it would be like

If I was still doing radio in North Carolina and NC State won the ACC tournament for the first time and who knows how long like I know that college basketball is not the national topic that it used to be but what I have definitely figured out and gleaned about

This is when the places that care about college basketball it is still a huge local topic and man I bet they having a good time down there tonight and while I think they having a good time down there tonight I’m having a good time with it too because I noed something the NC

State has that makes everything better and uh Sean were you able to get that picture for me of the DJ dude I think it’s DJ Burns no you didn’t me let me look it up right now yeah give it a look I think I I think we had a a traffic

Miscommunication I was bringing it up but you you look that young man up I want you to get a picture of him and when you got it you let me know DJ Burns uh plays uh in the post for NC State and as those of you who have followed me for

A while know I’mma remind everybody okay there’s one thing that everybody loves in basketball Sean you get you find him yet yeah give me one sec I got a video of him yeah oh yes Here Comes our man and when you see him you goingon to look

At it and you gonna be like oh yeah this what he talk about go ahead put him on the screen Sean there he is right there everybody loves a chubby baller we all love the chubby dude that get out there and hoop he had a great quote I don’t know if you

Saw that cuz he got like moves and stuff cuz anytime anybody that chubby is playing they got skills cuz otherwise how the hell they going to be out there but he’s had a quote where he said that he watched a lot of film of AEM alijan he just wilded up with Zack randol’s

Body we ain’t had I’m trying to remember like there was the white there the white dude this year what they call him Kem Abdul Jabar the dude with the glasses at Indiana State I was hoping he would make the tournament too because everybody could get on board with what he was

Going with Sean what you know about the meat hook you ever heard of meat hook what’s the what’s the meat hook is that a y know sky hook hey hey somebody in the chat room y’all know about the meat hook tell y’all tell Sean about the meat

Hook we got we used to had a meat hook um we used to have Oliver Miller uh tractor trailer rest in peace who else am I missing yeah rest in peace to Escalade I feel like I having to say rest in peace too much uh but who I

Trying remember we had some more of those man but yeah look at DJ burs man look at that cat everybody enjoys that when the fat dude be out they’re cooking everybody likes it now I would like to note we are not at a place yet in our

Voyage where you could have an analogous figure in women’s basketball Sean I tell you about that I started watching women’s basketball and when somebody is uh significantly larger than her foes uh they say she has good size good size yeah I think I know the player you’re

Talking about as well yeah no no no no no this is a couple years ago like I just learned though that that’s how that goes I guess what I’m saying is there ain’t going to be no DJ Burns in women’s college basketball cuz we ain’t got the

Le go to that place oh my man talk about Glenn Big Baby Davis Big Baby Davis was an incredible athlete uh yeah John Hot Plate Williams you don’t know about them cats you ain’t find you you got to go find the meat hook look up meat hook basketball you’ll see what I’m talking

About when we talk about the meat hook I can’t believe nobody in the chat room ain’t in here talk about the meat hook yet but we used to have them dudes man they everybody in enjoys them it is the only place in sports where we are not

Fat phobic really we don’t get fat phobic about fat basketball players unless they used to not be fat and then they become fat but if it look like they just got rolled off the assembly line fat we love that we love all of those my man talking about who was the dude on

Pit is he talking about dwan Blair oh Dexter Pitman forgot about him did Charles Barkley of course Charles Barkley is kind of the OG on that and it wasn’t always big men what y’all know about khed elamin yeah they used to had khid elamin doing interviews talk about his favorite

Snacks that dude was 510 and the thing about khid alimin was khed alimin hooped exactly like what he was and what he was was a 510 chubby dude who wore undershirt see you kids now don’t understand about the undershirt CU when they wear the undershirt it’s always all

Tight and like for athletic performance as opposed to the same same dude that wore a undershirt when he played basketball used to also be the same dude that wore a shirt at the pool y’all remember that y’all remember that Sean you found the me hook

Right yeah you got to get the me hook in college though that’s the old meat hook get the meat hook when he was at Florida it was a dude named Demetri Hill and he had a shot called the meat hook cuz cuz you saw him you know what I’m

Saying so that’s why we called him we used to beat him hook the meat hook 30 years ago this year in fact the meat hook was in the final four that’s right got I forgot I got to teach you youngsters about the beat hook but that’s other oh that’s unfortunate man we going

That far back in time I guess the thing about the me hook was like you know in that day and time we kind of leaned in on the idea but it does help if you going to be somebody like the meat hook to Have a Gimmick you know and that was his

Clip of the day hi this is Dan angur a senior editor with the Atlantic and I’ve got a recent story about The Return of measles and what it means and doesn’t mean about America’s attitudes towards vaccination okay so here’s the bad news as of last Friday the country has now

Had 59 reported measles cases this year which is more than we had in all of last year the good news is that most people in America have had their measles shots the latest numbers show that more than 93% of kids going into kindergarten have been vaccinated

Now it’ be nice if that rate were higher of course we’d rather have 95% or 99% but the fact is meel vaccination rates have been pretty steady in this country right in that lower 90s zone for decades now yet still there’s this story Brewing kind of like a grand narrative

About what’s going on which blames the latest measles cases on National politics and the fact that Republicans and Democrats have been diverging on the issue of vaccination since the pandemic so it’s been natural to assume I guess that the measles outbreaks are just another outgrowth of this Co stuff like

Republican parents are choosing not to vaccinate their Republican kids and Republican kids are getting Republican measles but this just isn’t true the cases that we’ve seen this year aren’t happening in red States or red counties they’re happening in blue ones and when bigger measles outbreaks have occurred

In the past few years they’ve tended to pop up in smaller insular communities with much lower vaccination rates than the rest of the country and not because of Party politics but because of really specific local factors Health Care access or the fact that rumors are getting passed around from family to

Family so for example we’ve had major outbreaks among htic Jews in Upstate New York and among the Amish in Ohio and among Somali Americans in Minnesota but it’s been really tempting to forget that fact to forget those people who are actually vulnerable and focus instead on

This idea that we’re in some kind of national vaccination crisis we’re not and to say that we are might only make things worse by telling people that choosing whether to vaccinate their kids is like some basic part of their political identity I have to say I found that to

Be interesting and some of the answers there to not be what I would have expected and Sean what that tells me is something that we learned definitely during Co with a lot of media people is whole lot of them people on TV hoting hollering about not taking No vaccine

Was after work right here like yo give it to me dog give it give give it to me right in the mey part they knew exactly where they wanted that shot they just out here lying yeah the the writer mentioned like this wasn’t a political issue but I

Think because misinformation is so uh rampant in this country that it lowkey has political indignations you know but but I do think there are a lot of people and we’ve seen them who have been vocal about the idea of being like antiva like this isn’t a term that came out of

Nowhere and I think a lot of people are really loud and I imagine that some of them are actually not getting vaccinated but I bet you there’s a whole bunch of them that are they just out here talking his noise and saying whatever it is that

They afraid of but they they doing it right that’s what gets me about so many people when they push that rhetoric is it’s real easy to talk it and it’s easy to get money off of it but when the rubber meets the Brad man who try to

Have a measel in their house you imagine if you looked at your looked at your kid and you saw a single solitary measel I don’t even know what a measel look like I need to look that up what is a measel but if I look down and I saw a measel oh

Boy I would freak out someone in the comments said measel trying to make a comeback like LeBron in 2016 it you know I thought we were done with it D I have to admit man we we really measles was down 3-1 like I feel like there’s a lot

Of these that was down 3-1 man we going to look up one day and next thing you know it’s going to be game seven with small poox you just hoping the home court advantage will get you through yeah I heard polio in the lab working on

Something right now yo yo that’s the one I just can’t believe we even having a conversation about polio all right Bo here’s the next clip something in your neck of the woods my name is Marin kogan and I’m a senior correspondent for vox.com I wrote a story last week about

New York Governor Kathy Hook’s decision to send around 750 members of the National Guard and hundreds of state troopers into the the city’s subway system following a handful of violent crimes now if you look at the numbers you’ll see that crime was actually down in New York City last year and according

To an analysis by the New York Times the rate of violent crime in the City subway system is roughly one per 1 million rides meaning your chances of being a victim of violent crime on the subway are really low but this got me interested how safe is New York City

Anyway there’s an Innovative new study by researchers at NYU that has some interesting answers they used Urban scaling Theory it’s a form of analysis that has only been around for about 10 years and has been primarily used to research things like wealth distribution and population growth and they applied

It to gun violence they looked at nearly a thousand US cities studying a number of different relationships between gun access crime and population and they aggregated all these data sets in the six years leading up to the pandemic their modeling allowed them to compare the actual prevalence of gun violence in

A given City to how the model predicted a city of its size would behave the model also predicted that a city New York’s population size should have way more gun homicides per capita than it does in fact of all the big cities they studied New York had the largest gap

Between what the model predicted the gun homicide rate per capita would be and what it actually was so they said actually New York City should be a plotted they’re clearly doing something right you can read more about their findings in my article at vox.com yeah I’m going to tell you this though

About like the subway and I didn’t feel like what they were saying they were going to do with the subway would help like they talk about they were go send the National Guard there to do bag checks and like that that didn’t seem like it would be the solution to the

Problem at least from what I could tell the problem happens to be the thing about the subway is I don’t know and I think the prevalence of all these cameras and these phones and everything and like when something bad does happen everybody sees it now in a different way

And so it kind of heightens the sense of feeling of the danger and it’s not for me to tell other people when they should or should not feel safe but this is what I’m explaining to people the thing about the Spectre of some way violence is is one thing if it’s talked about

It’s happening on the platform if it happens on the train you are kind of at the mercy of wherever this thing happens to go right if I don’t care if it’s a fight it’s a shootout or whatever it is we are in this tube and there is nowhere that any

Of us can go that is the haunting part of it so you can say it’s one in one million rides that’s fine but if it happens on this ride it don’t have to happen to me it’s just got to happen in the proximity of me and if it happens in

The proximity of me oh baby we got a problem do we ever but yeah no I N I can’t tell that story because I don’t know if my man is still on the run but I know somebody who got busted for busting a shot shot off in the subway

Except he didn’t get busted he escaped and as far as I know he hasn’t come back it’s a long story I’ll tell you later yeah we’ll save it for another time Bo here’s our next uh I am convinced though he wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t have a

Reason that’s very fair if you were his lawyer I think you’d get off with that point right there I’m Madison Hall a politics and data reporter with Business Insider let’s talk about the legislation rushing through Congress right now to try and ban Tik Tok on March 5th two members of

The House unveiled this piece of legislation along with support from 52 co-sponsors the legislation which most Outlets are referring to right now as a ban isn’t really as much of a ban in the way you might think nowhere in the bill does it say Tik Tok has to be shut down

Instead it says that any company owned by a foreign adversary has 180 days to divest before facing a hefty fine that could be as high as quote multiplying $5,000 by the number of us-based users the house of represent is passed this bill on March 13th 8 days after it was

First announced in a bipartisan landside vote the victory in the house at least its margins of victory was kind of surprising especially after former president Donald Trump spoke out against it recently in an interview back when he was still president he tried to force bance to sell Tik Tok via an executive

Order but It ultimately failed in the courts we reported earlier in the week that his change of heart on the matter coincidentally happened soon after after he met with a republican Mega donor in Florida Jeff yoss who happens to have a 15% stake ownership in Tik Tok that

Being said Trump’s reasoning for turning his back on the bill may be more strategic than anything if it becomes a law he’ll be able to say to millions of voting age Tik Tok users in the US that he wouldn’t have voted for it or done anything with it but Biden did now it

Sounds silly but an election that could be extremely close endorsing a bill as decisive as the anti- Tik Tock one has the possibility of determining who wins control of the White House it may not however actually come to that Biden’s signal he’ll sign it if it gets

To his desk but several Senators have voiced their concerns already with the bill including Senator Ted Cruz who recently told Bloomberg he thinks it needs to go through the quote full amendment process in committee before it can be voted on and if that happens there’s a nonzero chance the bill ever

Sees the light of day on the senate floor any any time before the election so re was reading the book by Giannis varicus called uh techn feudalism I do not know if I pronounced his last name correctly but anyway was reading the book and he makes some very

Interesting insights about Tik Tock and the role it plays within the global economy I will make this broader point so as to avoid misrepresenting his far more specific points the book is called techn feudalism I highly recommend it but a big point that he makes is of all the huge like information harvesting

Juggernauts of our online existence in this country Tik Tok is really the only one that is not American based right like you start talking about Amazon you start talking about meta you start talking about Google you know Apple I don’t know how much Apple does

But you know what I mean but like those companies that have all that stuff and get all the information and make all the money off of that stuff the one that’s really getting it but isn’t based in the United States is Tik Tock I would keep

That fact in mind when you are thinking about why in the world it is that this government might want to ban Tik Tock and then go from there techn feudalism makes a lot of other points about it but they’re a little too complex but most notably it’s a whole lot of money that

The Chinese can get off of Tik Tok that does not have to be reinvested into the American economy which is basically how global trade Works in most cases that wouldn’t be the case on this one so it is very easy to look at the Tik Tock

Band is why do you want to get rid of this cool little app that people enjoy and yeah it’s super addictive and there are lots of problems that we actually should be considering but why it is that that someone want to go so far as to ban

It no it’s actually a little deeper and a lot more interesting than you probably think and Bo this article I mean this tweet says that there’s no evidence tiktock has coordinated with the Chinese government and that the national the threat to National Security is per purely hypothetical but I think to your

Point the fact that Americans don’t own that data is the biggest reason that this is happening yeah National Security is a very broad term like what you think is important to security is not necessarily what they talk about know what I mean all right Bo today’s prompt following our Foxworth Friday last week

Was uh the time you ran into an athlete similar to Dominique Foxworth in high school or college that uh maybe threw a lot of points up on you uh here’s our first one today hey bman this is Vince from New Jersey I just want to tell a story about

My time playing High School football I had the privilege of began to play against the mccordi twins back in the early 2000s and just to give you a little bit of context I played defensive for my team now I’m about 6 foot 170 uh was one of the biggest people on

The team that’s why I was on the D line so that give you a little preview of how this went so uh the mccordi twins Devon mccordi ran the Jet Sweep on us three times uh so his final stat line was three carries for about 180 yards and

Three touchdowns so as he’s running uh he gets started he’s running down the line in this Jet Sweep and by the time I’m even out of my stance all three times he’s already five yards down the field with the ball on the third play I thought maybe we had a chance because I

Saw a flag on the play and thinking maybe one of them jumped off sides or something like that and we at least like on technicality were able to stop him once but no on that third one the flag was on us we had too many people on the

Field we had 13 players on the field and he still ran for uh about 60 yards in on a touchdown untouched so as you can tell um my future was not in NFL and we got a glimpse up close at Deon McCord’s brother Jason we had 13 dudes on the field

Sean and you still couldn’t stop them wow that’s rough who we got next hey B this is Matt from Central Illinois I know you’re always looking for stories of finding a professional and amateur setting and back in probably would have been about 2000 in high school we played

A school that was home to AJ giden who would later go on to be big 10 Player of the Year in a second round draft pick and during the course of that game uh I was playing kind of the the weak side of the basket where G was playing in the

Corner behind me and as I’m watching the ball move around the perimeter some fella on the opposite Wing takes a shot from probably 25 feet which I can clearly see is going to come wide of the basket by a good two feet I get all excited I’m going to grab this rebound

As I turn and find my man to box out all I see is Middle guen shorts going right across my nose as he Gams that thing in behind me that right there told me there are certain places I don’t belong and this court will be one of them thanks B

Like what you do with the show appreciate it keep up the good work he turned around and knew exactly what the problem was rut roll those are shorts it’s it’s crazy to think too AJ G who you know maybe played four years in the league had a successful

International career but that’s the guy yamming on you and just shows how different that level of professional athlete is man my boy said that he played against DeShawn Stevenson in the state semi in California and something happened the ball went off the glass and it was on a breakaway and the poor kid

On defense didn’t realize that it was like a stunt and the ball went off the glass he followed it DeShawn Stevenson yammed on him and my man said that he could see Buddy’s face through Desa Stevenson shorts like like pressed out like like just like a like a whole like a imprint

Like through through the through the shorts man that’s that’s that’s an unfortunate break big dog that’s when it’s time to go all right here’s our here’s our last one on a very large and athletic athlete going on buman uh I have a story about playing against a future

Professional uh in high school I was a junior uh playing receiver more of a slot receiver a little stocky and uh we’re playing mil pedus um the whole year we had heard we had heard about this guy on their team who played running back was also a defensive

Tackle and you know our coaches are are asking you ready are you ready and we think we’re ready Monday afternoon before the game they turn on the film and I see him for the first time it’s vaa and he is just plowing through people um and so Frid comes around and I’m playing

Slot and I’m just stock blocking plays to the other side vaa was playing an end found me from behind picked me up from behind my shoulder pad and threw me it had to be 10 yards uh when I land on the ground I look up and I’m in a starfish starfish

Position I look up and my offensive coordinator is just yelling that’s a bully move that’s a bully move and I just went ahead and walked off the field after that so uh we lost pretty badly that game and they kicked us out of the playoffs

So it’s all bad you know you better than everybody else when you do something they call it a bully move it’s like come on man and and further record V now is 64 350 lbs and R A 51040 it’s just a a physical specimen have you seen the

Clips of V vea playing running back in high school the thought of trying to tackle that as a civilian BR bro you have to see the clips like what are we what like I talk about that with Clowny like what are you supposed to do I really don’t know what you was supposed

To do with this like n you looking at it now yeah like I mean what what are we supposed to do guys with this big giant man and they’re handing him the ball I’m not doing that man and this is back when he was a mere 260 look at them

Feet that’s what I’m saying he’s dusting these cats nah nah nah y’all can have that y’all can have that y’all can have that but hey ladies and gentlemen thanks so much for joining us here on the right time presented by prize pick we do this

Three times a week that’s Shan you H and everything behind the scenes thank you sir also thank you to our if you haven’t heard contributors thanks to Daniel inber of the Atlantic check out his story on the return of the measles at the atlantic.com thanks to Marin kogan

  1. Bomani – you're 💯% correct. I'm a 56 y.o. white guy, been watching the NFL and the Steelers since 79.

I've observed the same phenomenon over the years, vis a vis, black QBs. And your theory makes perfect sense: if you're a GM – black, pink, yellow, brown or polka dot – the one thing you do not want is a QB Controversy. Especially a perpetual one. The Blackup Theory is a simple, common sense work-around for GMs regarding certain realities of every team's fanbase. Like you said, the backup is supposed to be a place-holder, an afterthought.

In the modern NFL every team needs two viable QBs because of injuries – but you still don't want unnecessary controversy.

  2. Bo dead on. I'm a bears fan and JF1 haters in the fanbase all had one thing in common <skin color>. The list of qbs that was said better than JF1 was insane. Badget…..even Bo Nix 😂😂😂

  3. If you think it's bad in football you should see soccer, I have become a fan of certain teams and the hositlity they have for certain players when they don't play well is eye opening vs other players they let slide with mediocrity .

  4. I first noticed the blackups situation last year when Dak Prescott was subjected to it when people were clamoring for Cooper Rush to start over him.

  5. Soon as that last caller said "RB who also played DT" I KNEW it was gonna be Vita Vea🤣. Sounded like he was explaining a sexual assault

  6. 😂 this true. Bo i did a paper on something similar to this in like 8th grade it was 2003 lol. When Steelers had 3. Jags had 3 lol

  7. Very funny episode and most original insights in sports….Definitely keep the format…Bomani is in his own lane.. = he's going to survive the flood of new podcasts..I mean now Lamar Odom and the Jenners will podcast..it's getting out of control as huge money is being thrown around currently by the gambling shops…We'll see if their purses are bottomless..

  8. I'm a Browns fan. After the recent signing of Winston 4:10 is….🤣🤣🤣…Oh my god.. Let me catch my breath!…🤣🤣🤣

Edit: 🤣🤣🤣🤣 "… Kenny Pickett has some mother fucking gall!"

    Edit: Troop…Troop, Bo!! 🤣🤣🤣

Did you tell a joke like 50 of us are gonna get? 🤣🤣🤣

  9. I’m a Steelers fan who happily points out to those Mason Rudolph supporters that he had numerous opportunities to cement himself as the starter and failed. I would rather take my chances with Wilson and Fields than hoping that this is the year that Rudolph finally comes around. Fields took the blame for bad coaching and some bad front office decisions.

  10. Always liked Bomani ever since I watched him on Dan Lebetard shows with him and his father. A black guy that can have a chemistry w that odd pairing is a talented individual and great personality
