Literally everybody that covers this team everybody everybody that covers this LSU baseball team came into this season with the same narrative they got a lead with pitching and defense while they figure it out offensively you lost your top seven bats from a year ago 85 homers all the stuff

It was going to take some time to figure out your best lineup but you had tons of great arms to kind of to get you there until you figured it out right well you go to Starkville and you’re starting and your pitching allows 33 runs over three

Games all three of your starters were bad well look at this weekend Luke hullman looked like the guy that he was the first month of the season he gives you six Innings of one-run ball strikes out a career-high 13 that’ll play against a good lineup too proving the Mississippi State week

Was more the outlier not the first month that’s a great feather in the cap you go dominate Florida you outplayed Florida in every single way on Friday you chase Cade Fischer after five you hung five runs on him it’s great you win six to one total breather it’s a real Feelgood

So LSU is going to play Arkansas on Thursday and that’s going to be a giant challenge because you got to go face Hagen Smith on Thursday in fville and that’s not going to be fun especially for a lineup that’s struggling but I think Jay Johnson’s kind of at this this

Point where he’s got he’s got some decisions to make um you know he was asked about the you know the offense and you know if if there might be changes and he said he’s probably going to look at that and here’s the challenge for for Jay right

Now we all know this team is like we said they were going to lead with pitching and defense and you hope the offense comes along so so do you go with your absolute best defensive lineup do you catch milazo do you put klling in Center Pearson in right milum at second

You you know like you’re what what you believe right now is your best defensive lineup and you say you know what we’re going to pitch it we’re going to play great defense and we’re we’ll scratch across runs however we can or do you go offensive heavy and

That’s what LSU did on Sunday if you didn’t notice Brady Neil was in right milum went to the bench they put Pearson at second trinsky caught yet Ethan fry dhing Jay went with an offensive lineup on Sunday they knew the challenge going against Jack kleon wind was blowing out

Like he let’s load let’s load up this lineup with hitters with Boppers with dudes that could change the scoreboard with one swing and it netted you two runs on three hits so I don’t know you go with some type of a blend listen I’ll tell you this it’s pretty clear Jay Johnson

Really likes Ethan fry and really likes Ashton lson I think those guys are going to play a lot more we’ll talk about Paxon King here which I’ve talked about plenty Paxton clling there was a play on Saturday if you weren’t watching the game was a bloop into shallow Center

Milm and brazwell are both running towards center field neither’s going to get there Paxton King who was playing deep almost at the track dead Sprint comes in makes the catch there’s not another player on this team that makes that play that that’s why I’ve said I want that guy in Center

I know he’s an out I know it he’s an out he had two awful strikeouts on Sunday with runners in scoring position inexcusable put the ball in play so I get it he’s an out but are you going to lean on defense if you are he’s got a

Play in Center there’s one caveat and I’ll throw this out there and it’s Jake Brown now they started Jake Brown on Saturday Jake Brown it in Center got a hit in his first at bat his second at bat while he was running the first base

He kind of pulled up Lane we’ll wait and see uh an injury update on Jake Brown for how long he can be out but Jake Brown may very well be the best ath on this team and he can hit if Jake BR if the difference between cing and brown in Center is marginal

Just a sliver and you’re going to get a another bat in the lineup then I’m good with that I I will not be okay with moving Bingham to Center like they did against Mississippi State because now you have a liability in center field and for a team

That doesn’t have great margin for error as we saw you can’t afford to have a liability at that position the challenge with LSU right now is I’ll give you an example I’ve used for years when I talk about LSU baseball and it’s it’s a hanagriff line I can’t take credit for

It but Charles used it a 100 years ago and I love it I use it all the time whenever situations like this come up LSU has guys that should be role players trying to play premium positions like M Bingham is a good college baseball player Dylan Cruz was leading off for

You last year it’s a big difference you know what I mean Michael brazwell should be a nine-hole hitter for you a guy that’s just fun Ally within the offense put the ball in play Move Runners along play a really good short stop well he’s betting in the six hole like that’s

That’s the challenge you have you got role players playing key spots for you and the and the the example Hanah used all those years ago was about a guy named Blake Gil if you remember Blake Gil and this is not a knock in any way on Blake Gil he’s a fine college

Baseball player but Blake Gil was sort of an illustration of of when the the program started its downturn under smoke because BL Blake Gill was a he played middle infield at times he played first base he played all over and hanny’s line was I really like Blake

It’s you read some of the tweets from some of the media who seem to have some insight into what’s coming uh somewhat explosive so I’m assuming by now that everyone has has seen that the two and a half three minute press conference from Kim balky but um here was some some of

It the gist of it former players have told me that the Washington Post has contacted them and offered to let them be anonymous in a story if they’ll say negative things about me The Washington Post has called former disgruntled players to get Negative quotes to include in their story they’re ignoring

The 40 plus years of positive stories they have heard from people about me but you see reporters who give a megaphone to a onesided embellished version of things aren’t trying to tell the truth they’re trying to sell newspapers and Feed The Click machine this is exactly why people don’t trust

Journalists and the media in any more um Maly also uh and and I have some reaction to this I’ll get to that in a second Maly also went on and and threatened to sue the Washington Post I’m not going to let the Washington Post attack this University this awesome team

Hitpiece her words about Brian Kelly her words uh Kent bab went to Twitter and posted hitpiece question mark with a link to the story he wrote when Brian Kelly was hired and the headline is in Baton Rouge there’s a $100 million football coach and everyone else and the

Anyway and I’m not I’m not guessing anybody here is going to go subscribe to The Washington Post to read this um but it’s essentially hey Baton Rouge your city sucks but you’re paying a football coach $100 million where are your priorities you get it and for me my

Reaction to that is it’s kind of like the crazy uncle like I can talk bad about my crazy uncle but if you talk bad about my crazy uncle we’re going to fight because that’s still my family Baton Rouge in Louisiana is my home and

I know we’re flawed and we got a lot of problems and we work to try to deal with them and all that stuff but the last thing in the world I need is some dude from The Washington Post coming in to try to talk smack about my school my

State my city any of that stuff we don’t have a lick a lick of context and don’t get me started on who pays football coaches because I’ve gone down that road many times even with that lame what’s that that lame professor at LSU’s name thank the one who’s retiring

He was in Baton Rouge working on a piece with Kim muli to try to get them to talk they did and then only in turn when they found out she wasn’t working with this guy became distraught that just oozes of a lack of integrity and journalistic

Integrity if in fact he was doing that which I don’t have any reason to not not to believe Kim muli there’s been the question asked a bunch wh why do so many people have a problem with Kim mky why do so many people on the outside seemingly have a problem with Kim

Mky I I’ve heard that question asked a ton last week after the the quote unquote fight with LSU in South Carolina which wasn’t really have height talked about it one girl Cardoza from South Carolina shoulder checked FL uh that was kind of it there weren’t any punches nobody was dragging anybody

Is an outl liar so when Kate Fagan writes a piece that Britney Griner was encouraged not to come out as gay at Baylor and to wear sleeves to color cover all of her tattoos at Baylor that Community attacks Kim muli when Kim muli comes out amid the NCA tournament in 2021

And says they should dump covid testing because it would be a shame if a player couldn’t compete in the final four because they had a test tested positive people in people on one side are going to attack her for that now before I go any further I want to be

Um the rule change will call for a 15 yard penalty uh during games and as a through their research if you’re not familiar with a hip drop tackle if you want the quintessential like worst case example of it go look up the injury to Jordan Travis in the

Florida State game um it’s effectively when a player a Defender grabs hold of an offensive player kind of on the side and then just falls to the ground like lifts his feet off the ground and just body weight and what you see a lot of times is the offensive player will bend

Awkwardly to the side and through all of their research hip drop tackles uh result in a 20 to 25 times more injuries than other kinds of tackles so you’re 20 to 25% more likely to be injured from a hip drop tackle than any other tackle that that is an egregious number

I mean like whenever we look at if we look at something comparable like um Turf right that’s been a big argument real or you real surfaces or artificial surfaces is there a dramatic difference in injuries on those two surfaces there have been a number of studies over more than a decade and I

Know recently there was a study that showed a bit of a disparity but over the years the the difference in injuries has been negligible on on re on natural surfaces or artificial surfaces now now to be clear I’m not talking about AstroTurf like the old Astro Turf that

Was dramatic I’m talking about like that field Turf surface you know like with the ground up rubber pellets under it and all that sort of stuff that surface compared to Natural there’s the difference has been negligible so it’s different when you see something that’s like 25 a 25% increase in the likelihood

Of injury because of a hip drop tackle it’s not just injury it’s the nature of the injury which is really scary um I think what was maybe even the counter arent to this is going to be what defensive players in the NFL say which is that it’s going to be

You’re making even harder to um you know you’re making even harder to tackle so like Cam Jordan retweeted this from Emanuel Opa AA where he said there’s no such thing as a hip drop tackle hip drop tackle is just a tackle um you know I um I I’m not trying to um

I’m not trying to contradict or combat an NFL defensive player on this or or multiple NFL defensive players and I I do understand the perspective that they’re coming from because you’re making their job harder and harder and harder with well what’s a legal tackle I need my job

Is to bring this person to the ground how can I do that the most effective and if you’re if you’re making me think of all these different ways of where I can hit where I can’t H can I hip drop what is a hip drop in a split-second

Moment you could miss and lose I I and I’m totally totally um sympathetic to that the counterargument is I think most people could agree that what you’re trying to do is eliminate dangerous plays from there is no you cannot regulate violence out of a collision sport it’s impossible you can not do it

But can you do your best to limit dangerous plays things that you know have a higher likelihood of resulting in injury that’s why like I’ve always said about the spirit of the targeting rule the spirit is good we can all appreciate wanting to do our best to eliminate

Dangerous plays like a player lowering his head leaving his feet launching hitting someone Square in the face like dangerous plays for both the the ball carrier and the defender the problem I’ve always had is like there’s so many plays that are obviously not dangerous that get flagged

And some common sense needs to be woven into the whole targeting thing hip drop tackling is dangerous like it is it is proven there’s a a far there’s a 25% greater likelihood of injury with a hip drop tackle so I think the here’s what I’ll say I

Think the spirit of that rule is good and in the right place implement it and if it needs to be adjust adjust it as you go but I think the spirit of the rules in the right place okay hour number two we’ll kick it off with George sodano next on AFR

Nuanced if I asked you right now with a couple weeks left in the regular season what’s your opinion impression of the New Orleans Pelicans how do you describe this team I would call them frisky in the playoffs I feel like they’re one of those teams that you probably don’t want

To see because it’s going to end up being one of those long dragged out series and I feel like what we’ve seen from Zion most recently is well fans the Miami game where he didn’t play well although the team kicked the crap out of Miami right

Um I feel like we’re getting the Zion to JJ reck point my colleague that we expected to see a couple years ago that we only saw in small doses and they’ve got this power player in Zion that when Brandon is healthy which you know in theory he should be here hopefully

Sooner sooner rather than later um they’ve got this Dynamic Wing player they’ve got a veteran guard like CJ McCollum like they’ve got all the ingredients so the only thing they don’t have is the experience particularly as a collective so that’s why I just call

Them frisky but man I I feel like we may be on the precipice of seeing the team that people thought we were going to see a couple years ago I I I know the West is really tough but I am defitely afraid of them if I or any of these teams in

The Western Conference George the West is tough no doubt but is there it feels like you tell me if I’m wrong it isn’t a year where like when everyone knew it’s Golden State and everyone’s playing for second or or the Lakers or even Denver um is there that sizable a gap between

Say Denver and Minnesota and OKC and everybody else in the west I think Denver maybe but only because those five guys that they start and finish the game with are the best group of five guys there are in the league right now and we started to see this last year with them

Before they won the championship and I it’s funny I had a ton last season so I was kind of pounding the table on all these shows saying the Denver Nuggets are for real the Denver Nuggets are for real and people would just laugh at me like please the Denver Nuggets get out

Of here and they were clearly for real um and it’s because of the way they finished games and we saw that last year starting in around Christmas time they were basically from Christmas on they were the best clutch team in the sport and that’s what they are now you get

Them in the last five minutes of a game Matt you better have a big lead against them because if you don’t and it’s a close game they are going to run right through you in those last five minutes because they execute as well as anyone

So with that said they’re not as deep as they were last year they don’t have the Bruce Browns of the world Etc they’re relying on younger guys like Watson Christian Brown right those guys Brown got obviously some run last year during the playoffs but they’re not not

As deep as they were so can they be had perhaps I don’t think they’re as inevitable as the Golden State Warriors with Kevin Durant and Steph Curry and all those guys but they are really damn good I don’t think there’s any question anyone else outside of that I think you

Can take your chances with in the Western Conference in any matchup uh there would be at least six or seven different iterations of who could end up playing Denver in the Western Conference finals and I wouldn’t call you crazy on any of them could one of them be New

Orleans it possibly could and again it’s a lot of it is matchup dependent right and we all know attrition right injuries obviously play a huge role in this but yeah I I I can absolutely see a place where the New Orleans Pelicans are playing the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals absolutely

Gain you know and and looks leaner and meaner and to me that’s just what we’ve been asking for for a long time and look I get it man lower extremity uh injuries are really tough to deal with I understand it makes it very difficult to maintain a level of shape

But I I feel like there was plenty of criticism that I felt was valid at the time about his conditioning and for whatever it took now we are at that place where he is taking it very seriously and that’s what makes them a serious threat to get to the Western

Conference Finals is that he is taken that upon himself uh whether it’s the criticism whether he took it you know upon himself individually whether someone in his inner circle advised him hey man like let’s go you got to do this here we are we are at the right place

Now and hopefully Brandon can get healthy and he doesn’t miss too much time and he can be healthy as the playoffs start and hopefully get a couple of games before the playoffs start so he can get himself back in in rhythm in basketball shape to give them the best chance possible but they’re

Deep man they’re also really deep uh you look at that roster there are guys that may not make the playoff rotation because as we know it’s the old Pat Riley addage right uh you know trust eight Play Seven you know that’s kind of the way most coaches think about the

Playoffs so I’m curious to see what that looks like with a team that’s as deep as nor okay an obvious question but to ask it just for the sake of the conversation um how different is the team if bi is absent or limited yeah that changes the Dynamics

For sure um you know Brandon has played so well and you know look it’s funny we’re talking about Zion’s weight right we should talk about Brandon and what he’s done with his body and the transformation he’s had over the last several years and I remember when he was

Here in La where I live and I watched him and I was like man he’s rail thin and I never knew if he would get to a point where he would look like he looks now and he’s strong his shoulders are broad like he looks like an impressive

Specimen um when you look at just his body and I don’t think he’ll ever be LeBron um but he doesn’t need to be you know what I mean he’s bigger than Kevin Durant and we’ve seen Kevin Durant’s frame hold up pretty well for the most part so to me though

Not one of them on a regular basis you know what I mean whereas they’re watching a lot of Laker games or a lot of warrior games or you know you you know even the Rudy goar obviously is someone that’s gained a lot of traction because Utah had some real success right

They were the number one seed even though they failed in the playoffs but people were watching them and seeing them regularly I don’t think we’ve gotten there with New Orleans yet um so I think UNT that confirmation bias kind of plays a little bit of a factor um

Along with reputation because I’ll tell you this people where I live in LA are beside themselves that Anthony Davis doesn’t get enough love I know you guys don’t love Anthony Davis on there but wrong crowd bro no no I know I know but they are they they’re they’re stun that he

That was going to be a lock as a first-rounder I’m not sitting here trying to tell you that Mel Kyper is the the be all endall but he’s a guy that everyone knows and so his opinion is one that a lot of people look at and Trust

Mel Ker’s mock draft back on uh January 23rd so this was Kyper 1.0 like the first mock draft he put out on January 3rd had Keon Coleman 15 overall to the Indianapolis Colts and some mock drafts have had him even higher than that but the next mock draft that Kyper did after

The Super Bowl kind of as we started going through the draft process remember mock draft 1.0 had him at um at 15 mock draft 2.0 had him at this was on February 28th had him at 26 to the bucks so 15 and January 26 in February and now in the

Post combine mock draft not in round one has him as the eighth best receiver overall in this draft so look if New Orleans were looking at a receiver at 14 Keon Coleman wouldn’t be in play there are just very clearly receivers that are going to be

Higher in the pecking order and so much of this fall I guess we could call it air quotes fall I mean a lot of that is really just based on what the the draft pundits and perspectives are I mean you never know a team could fall in love and think Keon

Coleman’s the best receiver in the draft and take him high and we saw the Saints take Payton Turner in round one and trade up to take Marcus Davenport like it just takes one team to fall in love with you so you all know that that’s the

Caveat so when I say fall it’s the perceived fall but it was when he went and ran 461 at the combine he went and ran 461 and his draft stock fell and a lot of the pundits and analysts sort of fell out of love with Keon Coleman or

Maybe a better way to say it is a guy like Brian Thomas took over that spot you saw other receivers Xavier worthy sort of LeapFrog Keon Coleman because of their performances and how they ran so um all that to say Coleman is not going

To very likely be a Target at 14 plus I don’t think the Saints should be looking receiver at 14 to be very clear the Saints have so many needs that I would be good with almost any position at 14 like if there were a no doubt Nob

Going to be so topheavy with quarterbacks and other Elite offensive linemen like like Joe Walt JC leam that’s going that could push a guy who’s a top 10 grade maybe in the middle of round one you could get a steal there that’s my best case so if you get your

Offensive lineman at 14 and you’re sitting there at 45 and someone like Keon Coleman is there at 455 that feels like a steal for me and yes the Saints have got to add receivers to this room I mean we’ve gone over the N last week when we talked about the Odell Beckham

Conversation and again if you missed it Bill Barnwell at ESPN looked at like the top remaining free agents and where their best fit might be and he he labeled Odell Beckham his best fit in New Orleans and so we did the pros and cons list and quite honestly I think a

Younger receiver like Keon Coleman on a rookie deal is a better option than maybe like one year with Odell Beckham despite all the the the tug on your heartstrings that you’d love to see Odell going to his hometown and playing in New Orleans if if you told me I could

Get one year of Odell Beckham or I could get Keon Coleman at at pick 45 give me Keon Coleman on a 4-year second round rookie deal that’s going to be affordable because that’s the way like that is the way this team can push the reset button is if they nail the

Draft you nail the draft and you get all of these starting caliber players on rookie deals that’s how you reset like that’s what they did in 2017 when you hit on Latimore and Ramic and Marcus Williams and Alvin chimra and Trey Hendrickson and Michael Thomas the year

Before you you hit on all of these draft picks then all of a sudden you had a a team full of starters on rookie deals and that’s what it’s going to take here for New Orleans to be able to reset with their cab situation so so I mean that or

You well you or you just tank so and I don’t think they’re going to do that so I think you’re looking for Great Value in this draft and I think you’re going to get it on the offensive line at 14 and I think you’re going to have a great

Option for a top receiver at at 45 the other thing worth keeping in mind in this draft the Saints have four fifth round picks four fifth round picks and two sixes so they don’t have a pick in round three or four this year year and you know the Saints are not standing Pat

Waiting to pick four players in round five it’s just not going to happen so they’re going to package picks to move up into round three and or four when they see some value on the board I mean I’ll remind you they traded up in into round three to take Alvin chimra back

When they did in 2017 so there’s going to be value in this draft that’s what the Saints are going to be hunting it’s not going to be numbers it’s not going to be volume it’s going to be value and Keon Coleman in round two would feel like great value

And that might just be a guy who’s lurking around at 45 When the Saints pick so much of the draft though is is when a a certain position there’s a run on a certain position and we know the top receivers are going to come off the board we know Marvin Harrison and Malik

Nus m was it it wasn’t a favorable draw for him but look stage Ryan was jumping passes he was all over the place he looked fantastic uh the second point of emphasis for me would really be true freshman safety to show him the Gage this is a guy who has tremendous length

He he has the football I would say just instincts man he looks like a fantastic player out there and I I truthfully believe it’s going to be really hard to keep him off the field it was truthfully kind of a thing where Us in the media were just sitting back and curious can

Shutout Innings from that your heard to start the game but you’re right the offense didn’t come along so if you’re if you’re Jay Johnson like what do you do to try to jump start the offense man I I think probably what he’s going to end up doing is shuffling the lineup

Around a little bit it it just seems to me we’re in an era where analy analytics is kind of controlling the offensive approaches and and the difference between non-conference and conference is the players in the SEC are so talented they can adapt and they can adjust and

Brian Kelly was talking like he was asked about um first it was offensive line and then and then it was receivers like he mentioned um basically the fact that will Campbell and Emery Jones are getting a lot of time off in the spring and why not like

I I I reference this often but years ago I I I referen this because this isn’t unique to this person it was just a hilarious story Mel de Moore was a running back at two lane who a lot of you might remember he played at Belair

And Baton Rouge went to uh went to tlane and when he finished two lane he was like one of two players in the history of college football that had like 4,000 rushing yards and 2,000 receiving yards and a bajillion this or that he was just

He never took a rep in Spring ever because it’s like why would you you know what he is don’t even run the risk of putting him out there spring is just for guys who are going to be firsttime starters or or young guys that need reps

So like I don’t need Will Campbell or Emery Jones taking a single rep in Spring you know what I need those guys to be healthy and in shape when LSU plays USC in Vegas that’s all I need from those two guys so um bordelon and Tyrie Adams have been

Taking reps at offensive tackle great I told you last year in in Fall Camp bordon was one of my most improved guys he was taking reps at left tackle and was winning like it was very clear that was a guy who came in had the frame was

A project and was improving which is really encouraging so I love getting bordon and Tyree Adams rep so Brian Kelly was asked about those two guys well listen to the answer there’s a couple of positions I think we need key backups and and the other one that we’re as you know that

We’re we’re working on is the key backup at quarterback and and that position needs to continue to grow as well so um my eyes are on those areas at the tackle position and certainly at the quarterback position nobody asked him about backup quarterback the question was about Adams and bordelon getting

Reps at offensive tackle and Brian Kelly offered the comment about backup quarterback now here’s the reason that’s interesting and I’m I’m sure you’ll agree as we talk through this they bring in AJ Swan from Vanderbilt now AJ Swan it’s not like he had this decorated career but AJ swan

And former coaches of hers uh to try to get them to say negative things and so she sort of fired a proactive strike on Saturday preemptive strike on Saturday to say you publish stuff that’s untrue I’m coming after you um anyway I I think there’s a lot of what he what what she

What she is alleging that he did uh lacks journalistic Integrity if he isn’t in fact if he did in fact reach out to former coaches of that coached with her te under the the the false pretense that he was in Bat Rouge working on a

Story with her to get them to speak and and that was a factual and accuracy then then then that is sleazy that’s there’s no other way around that um anyway so I I gave my my take on on the Moy thing and what really the question is that so many people ask
