Let’s start talking to Rick Spielman former Viking GM four NFC North titles with him six playoff appearances okay so we had Caleb Williams on a couple days ago we have bow Knicks on later um you know listen we nitpick these guys I remember before Andrew Luck got picked

People were saying I don’t know about his arm strength and I’m like guys we’re really nitpicking these guys is there anything though about Caleb Williams you know he does tend to lean in to the spectacular um is there anything you look at and think oh he’s got to address blank blank

Blank as a pro yeah this time of year everybody’s poking holes in these kids and they’ll keep poking holes in these kids until right before the draft and then you fall back in love with everybody again but looking at Caleb Williams to me he was the most unique playmaker I’ve seen in a

Long time at the quarterback position his ability to extend plays his ability to throw off schedu type throws an incredible arm talent and accuracy when he’s on the move but if you calling if you really want to start poking holes in the kid it was like he was

Overcompensating this year for a poor defense and a poor offensive line so he tried to hold the ball too long at times in the pocket to try to take the big shots down the field to get in some of these shootout games but he has to learn

How to take what the defense has given him the other thing if you want to uph another hole in his game is the ball Security in the pocket too many times he has it Loose you see him get stripped in the pocket the game that really stuck

Out to me the most that told me a lot about this kid and why this kid is a winner and you’re GNA say Rick you’re crazier than heck is a Notre Dame game because that first half may be the worst half I evaluated on tape when I seen him

Make those poor decisions through those interceptions but the one thing that really stuck out to me about this kid and his grit and his ability to shake things off he came back and played maybe one of his best half halfs the second half of that norre Dame game now they

Did not end up winning the game but it told me hey I played a crappy first half I can shake it off I know we still have a chance I’m going out and played better in the second half and he did that you know it’s interesting uh JJ McCarthy was

About a 205 pound football player in the season then balloons up to 220 uh in the combine and I remember Bryce young put on weight for the combine but I worry because I did feel when I watched him at Michigan that he’s a little spindly and the guys in this league Caleb Williams

May only be six feet tall but he is trunky and momes Brady if you’ve ever been next to Tom Brady the butt the hips Aaron Rogers is 225 in in my height and I’m 190 and I work out I mean Aaron is you know uh wrists shoulders Aaron’s big

He’s a big man and I look at I look at JJ McCarthy and I think oh this is like water weight they moved him up for the combine should I be concerned that he did look during the season a little thin and light and that’s not necessarily a recipe for success in this

League uh I think uh if they don’t look would you call him hunky is that the I could use now going forward with evalu I don’t know how hunky they have to look but I know JJ McCarthy did look thin on tape I didn’t get an opportunity to see

Him in person I know when the scouts go through the schools they try to at least get body weight on him if it’s reported that he was 205 or something I don’t know that uh but I’m assuming what you’re saying is correct but then all of

A sudden he puts on 15 pounds now I’ll bet and this is the trick that all these kids do if they’re concerned about their weight take Jane Daniels he didn’t even weigh in at the combine and they said he weighed 210 uh during the season with

Some of the people that I talk to but all of a sudden he’s 220 at the combine I’ll bet you $1 Callin that he does not weigh in at Michigan because a lot of times they’ll put that weight on just to say hey I’m over 200 pounds or 205 or 215 pounds and

Then go back down to their original weight but also I think these kids still will physically mature you mentioned Tom Brady I mean everybody’s seen his combine picture and he was spindly as you can get I don’t know if I would call him hunky like you like to refer to

These quarterbacks that really are good players in the NFL so I think there’s still a lot of physical maturity that can go along but I wouldn’t be too concerned about it okay you wouldn’t be too concerned so what if my evaluators my Scouts we take JJ McCarthy

And what if they say know he’s a B+ Prospect but we need a quarterback and we’ve got excellent weapons and an excellent offensive coach so the only way to get him is to go from 11 to five and give up multiple first now we don’t

View him as great but now I’m in year two Kevin oon year three I’ve got all these pieces like Justin Jefferson Jordan Addison I’ve got my pieces Aaron Jones getting older I need a quarterback for the future what does a general manager do like I always think sometimes

Maybe do you have to reach on a quarterback because of the value of the position well I think when you watched him on tape this year and it was two things you know about the kid and we had an opportunity uh uh when I was at CBS

On the stage at the combine and when he came up you can tell that he is a leader and there is that aura around him that just people gravitate to and he’s a winner he does what he has to do to win football games he didn’t have all the

Goty numbers at some of these other quarterbacks have coming out in this year’s draft but he wasn’t asked to do that all he was asked to do is go out win football games and what he do he lost one game I think in his entire career as a quarterback at the

University of Michigan these coaches the scouts the private workouts the meetings everything from A to Z the psychological testing everything you can do to try to predict what type of quarterback’s this going to be and if he’s going to be better than what you’re seeing on tape

So in Minnesota situation look to me this is going to be the most interesting part of the draft because you have Minnesota at 11 who also accum uh added a first round acquired a first round pick from houon you got Denver who needs a quarterback at 12 you got the Las

Vegas Raiders at 13 who also need a future quarterback I don’t see the big three coming out unless New England does something crazy and does not take a future quarterback for them but what team is going to get aggressive to say that hey maybe I see JJ McCarthy like you were referring to

As a early second round late first round pick but we need the quarterback the thing that concerns me is anyone that gets aggressive to go up there and get him Caleb Williams is going to cost you one first round pick Drake May is going to cost you one first round pick Jaden

Daniels is going to cost you one first round pick if you have to move up into the top 10 to get a JJ McCarthy who I don’t think is a top 10 talent I think he’ll be a good quarterback in this league you’re giving up multiple first

Round picks and probably a first round pick in the future to try to go up and get him so you spent a lot more draft capital on a JJ McCarthy because you couldn’t get one of the top three now maybe if you can move up and get one of

Those top three that’s a different story if you think they’re franchise chasing changing quarterbacks but there’s no way that Caleb Williams in my opinion doesn’t end up in Chicago the commanders cannot afford not to take a quarterback in New England that’ll be an interesting thing I know they signed jacobe

Brassette as the bridge guy but they have to find a quarterback of the future too so when’s the last time a team did that it didn’t work out well when San Francisco gave all those picks up to go get Tre Lance yeah um I want to talk about Russell Wilson and Justin fields

To Pittsburgh so once Russell Wilson signed if I was Justin fields that would not have been my first choice but maybe it was his only choice um and we got this discussion yesterday because there’s been this some NFL exec said they could cut Russ if they didn’t like

Him uh and I’ve heard like they’ll bench him uh if he comes there and has a bad September and my take is Rick in your years of it there is some gravatas around Russell Wilson that there would be some assurances from an agent in Russell that you’re not going to cut him

Or he does get first team reps in Camp I can’t believe it’s just going to be a coin toss and we’re going to watch them both I mean don’t you do am I nuts on this I think there’s been something said inside the building or some assurance

That Russell starts as the starter and is not getting cut or am I over my skis on that no I would say you’re under your skis on that because Russell Wilson for the price you could have gotten them at because Denver’s going to flip the bill

On a salary to say it’s 13 or one whatever his to say you got Russell Wilson for that number I’m sure he had plenty of options uh with other teams but he really decided to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers uh and I think even though Mike tolin said we’re all in on

Kenny picket I’m sure when they made when Russell Wilson signed it’s going to be an open competition but behind closed doors Russ this is your job to lose now unless you go out there and can’t walk and chew gum at the same time then this

Is going to be your job to lose and you’re going to come in and get the starting reps it’ll be interesting to see now that they traded for uh you know gave away or traded a cup of coffee to get Justin fields which I thought was an

Incredible move by Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan because if you would have told me a month ago that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback room is going to have Justin fields and Russell Wilson in there for under four and a half million dollars I would have told you that you know I’ll

Buy swamp land down here in Florida where I live so but I do think that Justin Fields will push him I’m not so sure they have some packages for Justin Fields I think both of these quarterback skill set fit what Arthur Smith wants to run in Pittsburgh physical run the ball

Take the shots down the field off of play action and play good defense which Pittsburgh are already does so hopefully this is something that gets them out of purgatory we’re always just good enough to get in the playoffs but not good enough to go far in the playoffs so

Getting aggressive but very smart uh to try to get these two quarterbacks in I think it’ll be Russell Wilson’s job to lose but if he struggles and Pittsburgh’s in the same position they were in last year at this time don’t be surprised if they switch over to Justin

  1. Caleb williams attitude scares me dude… i get a bad vibe from him. Id atill draft him, but wow he needs to humble himself a little

  2. Keeps bringing up why Fields would go to the Steelers, like he’s lying about options he had. Virtually every player in the league respects and wants to play for Tomlin, not only that but its a storied and still very stable organization unlike the modern day bears or plenty of teams for that matter. Theres something to be gained in a place that has structure

  3. How is belichick a good coach Doug Pederson beat the #1 ranked defense in nfc championship game and patriots in super bowl with nick foles throwing to Jeffries and agholor then followed that up the next year with another playoff run with foles and was a Jeffries dropped catch away from winning back to back Super Bowls with a backup.

  4. The one position Rick could never solve for the Vikings both from the draft or overall strategy was the QB position. He rarely drafted or developed QB's during his tenure. He did hit home runs in other areas of the team!

  5. If Rick Spielman says JJ McCarthy isn't going to be worth the top-10 pick, then you can bet he will in fact be worth a top ten pick.

  6. Everyone is looking over the connectable obvious with McCarthy: he’s proven he can handle the pressures that come along with taking a fallen brand back to the top. Michigan had become a laughing stock before JJ took over; can’t anybody see that this is exactly what the Pats would be asking of him? If anything could prep one for reviving ‘The Dynasty,’ it’s that.

  7. McCarthy beat CJ Stroud twice, Alabama, Georgia, Washington. Let that sink in. He played within the system.

  8. Rick has never drafted a successful quarterback. Watch Caleb’s 2023 tape against Utah , notre dame , cal , Arizona, Washington, and Oregon he was struggling against bottom teams besides Oregon and Washington.

  9. McCarthy is over-estimated while Blake Corum is under-estimated. Granted – he's small but JJ didn't get us to the championship on his own. Corum was scoring an average of 2 TD's per games last season.

  10. What about Joe Burrow.. He's not big.. He's listed at 6'4 215!! Cj Stroud isn't a big guy, 6'3 215! Jayden Daniel's is a stick, 6'4 210..Please stop with the size comments.. He just turned 21, hes not going to lose weight as he ages!

  11. Come on heard you supposed to be best friends with Sean Payton did he tell you he didn't even win starting job last year

  12. People keep saying Mike Tomlin when they talk about all these smart moves the Steelers have been making….be clear, it's the GM Omar Khan, who has been in office for 2 seasons, making the moves. Tomlin is an attractive coach to free agents, but Khan makes the moves and makes the trades. Tomlin was never doing anything when the GM was Kevin Colbert and they were best friends.
