Unknown Speaker 0:00 Do you have a process to get off the first tee that calms your nerves, and lets you understand it’s just one shot. Come on back, I’m going to show you what a simple process could be to accomplish just that.
Unknown Speaker 0:18 So a lot of times I’ll get someone to come here to Falcons fire for golf school, we’re on the 10th Tee. And sometimes this will be our first tee for the day with the nine holes of oncourse instruction we do with those
Golf schools. And the person will say, Man, I’m nervous. This is my first hole. What do I do? I’m always so jittery. I’m always so nervous. Well, why? Because you’re putting a lot more value than you really need to ingest this one shot. This is the beginning shot isn’t important. Absolutely,
It’s important. But if you make it more important than it actually is, yes, you’re going to have difficulty with it. Here’s a simple process. Number one, just start breathing. Breathe in, so your chest so your belly actually comes out and then breathe out through your mouth. And as you’re
Doing that, find something in the distance to aim to, you can barely see it on this down the line camera through the trees and over the back trees. There’s a very, very small telephone pole. Unknown Speaker 1:18 That’s my target. Why do I
Want to make it that small, because the smaller I make my target, the more focused I become on it, versus trying to hit the ball. Maybe just maybe it’ll take my mind off of trying to hit the ball.
Very much like having a dart in your hand, you’re just trying to throw and hit the bullseye. Unknown Speaker 1:40 That’s all we’re trying to do here. So again, just some breathing, Unknown Speaker 1:45 to relax. Unknown Speaker 1:48
Some practice swings, just going through a routine as if it’s just any other shot, keeping my mind focused on that little top of the telephone pole. Unknown Speaker 2:01 And that’s all I’m looking at
Here. That’s all I can see in my mind’s eye. And then when I go to the ball Unknown Speaker 2:10 I didn’t necessarily hit that. But now I’ve got it in play. And I’m not so nervous. It’s all a matter of focusing on something small,
Relaxing and trusting the fact that you are capable of hitting that small target questions, comments leaving below, get to as many as I can as quick as I can. Ring the bell. Hit the logo so you can subscribe. Come on back often want to help you improve your golf skills.

Excellent recommendation John on how to overcome first tee jitters. I've been playing this game for almost 70 years and first tee jitters do not affect me. As you suggest, I pick out something "close" in front of where I want to swing to in line with my distant target. I have no problem with this procedure. Well Done John! Keep up the good work!
Those are some very important tips John. I'm glad you're sharing them with us all. Many years ago, I learned from a Nick Price interview to pick as small a distant target as possible. As you just did. That is huge advice people. Then as Dr. Rotella says "focus on the target, look at the ball, and let it happen". Works for me. It goes to show that professional teachers as yourself really do make the game easier. I wish you had more views and subscribers, folks are missing out. Looking forward to your next video as I venture into golf again after a long layoff. You're teaching me things I never knew, and refreshing my memory on others.
