Dan Patrick: The Bears Are Set Up Well For Caleb Williams | 3/15/24

Dan Patrick reacts to the offseason the Chicago Bears have had so far and explains why the team is set up really well for presumptive 1st overall pick Caleb Williams, should the team draft him

Normally when a team is slated to own the number one overall pick the franchise has been going in the wrong direction I think people forget the Bears won seven games last year they uh dealt with Carolina got the top pick they did go seven and 10 and they were

In the hunt for a playoff spot there for a little while but they have the number one overall pick because Carolina was terrible last year the potential landing spot for Caleb Williams now looks even more promising they went out and they signed DeAndre Swift he’s a doit all

Back back he’ll catch some passes out of the back field they improved their defense they got a couple of promising defensive backs they bolstered the offensive line and then yesterday they traded for Keenan Allen he’s been a Pro Bowl wide receiver six times and you always have to say the

Following with Keenan Allen when healthy because when healthy he’s very very good so you partner him with DJ Moore who had 1300 yards receiving and Chicago’s offense now looks a little bit more formidable here now it feels like they’re doing all of these things to then bring in Caleb Williams they’re

Going to give him weapons unlike what Carolina did with Bryce young and Trevor Lawrence finished with the League’s worst record his first season as a starter in Jacksonville Joe burrow in 2020 he got injured they finished 4- 11 Kyler Murray his first year 2019 his team won five games B Baker Mayfield was

Selected by a winless Cleveland Browns team in 2018 you’re going into situations where you’re asked to be the Savior but that’s not going to how happen unless you have some help there it looks like the Bears have learned from other people’s lessons and even Justin Fields when they had him they

Still have him surround these quarterbacks with some Talent give them a chance at least to get off the ground and it looks like that’s what Chicago is doing now there’s still a lot of speculation or wonderment hey are they going to stay with Justin Fields okay we don’t know we don’t know

For sure but you know maybe they do maybe they keep him but they still take Caleb Williams I would be surprised if anybody went up to get Caleb Williams Washington Washington DC where he’s from I would be happy with Jaden Daniels I wouldn’t even blink an eye and be like

We’d love to have him he’s from here but we like Jaden Daniels are the Patriots going to go up and get him what do you have to go up and get him what’s it going to cost you if you were going to trade for CJ strad right now what would

CJ strad cost you if you called the Texon and said hey we’ll give you what you already know how good he is one year solv the code do you give four first round picks for him you’d be giving more for CJ stra than you would for Caleb Williams

Right are you going to go up we’ve seen the teams that go up and get these guys it doesn’t work out very often Carolina did it that didn’t work out they went up and got the wrong guy or at least the appearance of the wrong guy you know the Niners with Trey

Lance the Bears we’ve seen this before where you’re going up there Mitch trabis we got to have him okay nobody else wants him but we’ve got to have him and now Caleb Williams I can’t imagine a team going let’s say the Raiders and this was brought up to me what about the Raiders

Could the Raiders go up and get Caleb Williams I go sure but what are you giving up I mean if you’re going to give the 13th pick and what else are you going to give up all right I’m not interested if I’m the Bears you have to really knock

Them down and say you you can’t pass up on this offer I just don’t see a team and I haven’t heard any possible trade proposals now we have a lot of time before the draft but I think the Bears worst case scenario they keep Justin fields for a year and then maybe you

Have that back up in case something happens to Caleb Williams or you don’t have to play him right away that you can play Justin fields and then you can bring in Caleb Williams I still and I said this yesterday I’ve seen a couple of NFL reporters who picked up on this I

Think Philadelphia would be the ideal place for Justin Fields because is Jaylen her’s going to stay healthy and if he happens to get hurt that team is ready to go I mean they went out the Eagles have made some moves you don’t want to have all of this talent and then

You don’t have your quarterback there and Justin Fields doesn’t cost you anything you’d be able to bring him in one year you’re not going to pay him a lot of money he’s doe 25 million next year you could even franchise him if you wanted to but I can’t see that happening

Either it’s bring him in let him be insurance for Jaylen Herz I mentioned the Giants as a possible uh destination for Justin Fields put him in there put a little pressure on Danny dimes I can’t imagine Daniel Jones will be there the following year maybe Justin Fields is

Your future there but right now the Bears in a holding pattern uh or at least were given the impression that it’s a holding pattern and maybe they keep him maybe they don’t draft Caleb Williams maybe they trade the number one pick I don’t see that happening but

There is that possibility I just think that the Bears thought somebody was going to be more interested in Justin Fields as a starter maybe it was Pittsburgh if Russ didn’t go there maybe it was Atlanta if Kirk D cousins didn’t go there the perfect situation didn’t

Play out for them and now they have him and do they keep him or you know get close to drafting or maybe you keep him and then you trade him during the season if somebody considering we had 65 different starting quarterbacks last year that maybe you’re able to get more

During the season than prior to the season

  1. Is it just me or is it gonna be a little weird having all that offensive talent and then you’re supposed to be trading Fields and drafting Williams? Do I think that’s what’s gonna happen? Yes. It’s just gonna be a very unusual situation. It’s like you want Justin to catch fire with all this talent and raise his trade value through the roof but then what happens when the rookie comes in after the trade in week 8 or 9?? No matter how good he is that’ll be a tough adjustment. And what if the Bears are headed towards the playoffs and the QB is playing well and then you just go and trade the guy who’s leading the charge? Or do you play it out with Fields and wait til after the season to make those changes? I’m just saying this could turn into a very unusual situation if that happens. Doesn’t mean it will. Depends on if the O Line stays healthy and just how good they are. Of course if it’s handled right it could be a lot of fun lol.

  2. I like it , I want to see a great Caleb Williams before I trade Fields. Let Caleb sit . Well at least half a year if Caleb is good. And it's not bad for Justin, right now it looks like the bears are his only shot at a starting spot .

  3. Justin Fields is worth more Draft capital because he is still on his Rookie Deal, And his money is guaranteed. Justin is worth a 1st round pick easy.

Justin is worth more than his contract.
Tell me where can you find a QB with Justin Fields talent for $6 million.

Keeping Justin Fields is a low risk big payoff for the Chicago Bears.

Letting Justin play out his contract is smart. Because Justin is still on his Rookie Contract where can you find a QB that plays like Justin for $6 million??

    The QB market is dead.

And the Bears have a gem with Justin Fields they can trade down and end up with futures pick for years. Securing everyone jobs because they will definitely be a Playoff Team if they keep Justin Fields and Draft Caleb Williams.

  4. The bears had the chance to draft cj stroud last year. If they drafted cj, the bears wouldn’t even have this situation this year.

  5. Nobody with a brain in Chicago wants that painted nails, crying I mommy’s arms, entitled attitude, pre Madonna in our city. He’s smaller less effective version of Justin. They doing Justin dirty by setting up a loser like Williams with all this talent. I sure hope Poles is waiting for draft night to get 4 first round picks

  6. At first I thought they would keep jf1 but then you have to look at how stroud came in and dominated they took into consideration as Caleb is even better than stroud so what could he possibly do

  7. Oh! Ryan Poles announced he is picking Caleb without meeting him? Are you a journalist or psychic?

  8. The Bears only have FOUR PICKS!. Poles trading the pick for draft capital. Poles don't make these win now moves for a rookie QB.

  9. I think people forget that Caleb didn't do any physicals at the combine. He said he would do them when teams brought him in for a visit. Then, he said he wasn't doing any visits until after his pro day on 3/20. So, maybe the Bears don't want to trade Fields until they get Caleb's physical done. Would hate to bank on Caleb and then find out something is wrong.

  10. You all keep speaking on Caleb Williams there are other quarterbacks in this draft. I hope the Bears do a whole 360 on everyone cause I want to be present when the egg settles in. If there is egg on my face so be it I spoke my truth. Not the narrative.

  11. Draft Caleb, trade back from 9 with the saints #14 #45, draft a tackle at #14 and take a WR at 45. Xavier Leggette or Xavier Worthy if they’re there.

  12. The trade has already been agreed on. Bet news breaks after Williams pro day. Kingsbury went to Washington for a reason.

  13. With all the hype on Caleb, why would you be surprised that multiple teams like Washington wouldn’t do everything they can to get him?

  14. JF1 isn’t going anywhere. The media is keeping this story alive because it sells. Poles is spearheading an amazing franchise turnaround. As the draft gets closer teams will be willing to pay the price. Watch! 🐻⬇️

  15. Let Washington take Caleb and bears get a first round next year, then trade down to New England and get another first round for next year, then bears have 3rd pick..take Drake Maye or Daniels..it’s a win win
