Merley Cobham Sports U18 side entertained the talented Holt Utd U18’s at Merley Park on a bright but cool Sunday afternoon, the pitch was soft but in good order and it certainly didn’t deter the Holt side who sit top of the table from playing their exciting brand of football and really giving the Cobham youngsters a football lesson. Holt ran out really comfortable 6-0 winners but the home side wasn’t helped by going down to ten men in the 15th minute when Toby Ord was the last man and he brought down Holt’s goal machine Chris Bungay after slipping allowing the striker a free run at goal. To compound issues for the home side they lost their other central defender right on half time, Rio Oliver-House sustaining a hamstring injury.
Holt dictated proceedings from the off, their passing, possession based football giving Cobham very little opportunity for any structure and Holt were very patient, playing through the thirds very well, they were quicker to the ball throughout but they had to wait 26 minutes before a real threat on the Cobham goal but Bungay’s effort was rolled wide. Holt were making the man advantage tell and Cobham’s lack of ball retention wasn’t helping the home side and Holt took the lead in the 35th minute when Matthew Ford could only parry a Harrison Hughes header into the path of Bungay and the languid striker poked the ball home at the far post. Cobham went close to replying in the 39th minute, Jake Fletcher and Adam Hall combining well but Mitchell Edwards in the Holt goal dealt with the situation. Holt increased their lead on the cusp of halftime when Bungay was quickest to react in a goalmouth scramble and the visitors held a 2-0 lead at the break.
Holt began the second half in the ascendency but there was a little more continuity about Cobhams play at times but they couldn’t prevent Holt from adding to their tally in the 51st minute when Bungay completed his hat trick after a good exchange with Josh Toop. Holt were running the show but on a counter attack Cobham’s Hall should have done better with Edwards out of position but he hit the ball high over the bar. Holt were looking dangerous with every attack now, the Cobham depleted and inexperienced back line were struggling to keep them at bay and after a free kick was played in in the 60th minute Mackenzie Hopkins was on hand to head home. Cobham were undone by another free kick in the 80th minute when unmarked Tyler Nickle headed home at the far post making it 5-0 and the scoring was finished off in the 85th minute when Harry Smith finished off a fine Holt move. Cobham never threw the towel in but Holt showed their class throughout, final score 6-0 to the league leaders in a game very well officiated by referee Adrian Wiltshire.
