Hello Adam Basel jet here founder of scratch Golf Academy today how to create lag in the golf swing and how to use it in other words how to transfer it to speed and solid contact down through impact this thing befuddles people it sets them back I’ve taught go for
Decades it needn’t it’s not at all that difficult to do at least to some degree if you get the principles right most people’s principles aren’t very clearly thought out and I’ll give you a couple of crossover sporting activities you may have done that will help you transfer
That skill to your golf swing let’s get started well what is lag let’s do one for the lefties here with Bubba Watson it’s simply when the golf club Trails the hands or Trails the arms coming into impact obviously gives you a lot of power I want you to notice a couple of
Things just very briefly watch his lower body how dynamically it moves and independently of the club to some extent as well his trunk and arms and finally I want you to notice if we say the golf club let’s say is just outside that house when his lead arm is horizontal
Notice there’s been a big increase in that angle coming down seven AR shot there so what does lag do for us certainly it can help with solid contact the primary thing though is it creates speed and you need speed to play good golf now couple of thoughts
Here for you a towel is a great example if you’ve ever watched any of my videos you’ve seen me use this we have four segments hips upper trunk arms and Club those are the four that move in the case of a towel I just have my hands which we
Could call my hips in the club down here but two things you’ll notice the more the separate the more the separation in the segments the more wobble in the towel the more speed and of course the more acceleration and deceleration there is the more pop there is so think of it
This way you’ve got to get these segments moving disassociating and you’re trying to create speed out in the golf club two thoughts just quickly before we move on then talking to students over decades I don’t think are very helpful sometimes they just think if I turn my hips really fast through
The ball I’ll hit it farther and there is some truth you should move your hips quickly but then you should stop them quickly like the towel just turning through isn’t going to make that much difference in terms of overall speed and the other one I think is this feeling of
I should just hold lag we want the club to bounce and react in a dynamic way okay let’s have a quick look at a couple of other sports where you’ll see this pattern we’ll get back out here two famous athletes here Roger feder on the left tennis of course and Randy Johnson
On the right famous baseball pitcher both have actually switched to a right-handed motion so here we go let’s see the hips lead you notice the racket not only not doing anything the racket gets closer to his body now you’ll start to see the trunk unwind and then pop out
To the racket baseball pitcher there go the hips then the trunk starts to move the hips are stabilizing now the arm and finally of course again tremendous load there or increase in lag and finally the hips are pretty still and pop goes the golf club or of course in that case the
Baseball so I think the next thing is start to feel these ideas start to feel this concept in miniature so picture yourself just quickly skipping a rock like that you’ll feel how there’s a shiver in your arm and a snap of the wrist there maybe an alignment Rod
Against a bag and if you had to hit that thing we’ll use both hands here but you only had a very short amount of space to create that speed you’ve got to feel that sort of whip just doing this isn’t going to do it now picture this and I don’t know
Much about baseball but I think I know this much and surely if you’ve ever watched it you’d know the catcher Who’s down here when he throws back to the pitcher because they’re in the Major League he can rip it back there pretty well but he’s basically using his upper
Trunk and arm and wrist the pitcher himself is the same motion give or take but he’s able to generate movement more from the core in other words he’s generating movement farther away from the club head or the baseball in that case so that’s why hey you can generate
Whip just with your arms and hands but the longer the lever system the longer the towel the farther from the club head you’re generating it from the better it will get so then make a couple of little swings where I really feel the Genesis of the movement is here and it’s
Creating some snap in the club you’re starting to get the feel John R on the left Sergio Garcia on the right and if we look at him in the downswing there you can see not only is he lagging the club in general he’s bending the shaft a
Little bit and I can promise you I don’t know exactly what he plays with but I bet it’s pretty stiff let’s look at Sergio there and and you can see if I draw a line straight up from the handle again the shaft is actually bowing and bending it’s an extra source of power
Let’s look at that if you like this video hope you’ll hit the like button or consider subscribing to the channel we’d like to bring you more free content also hit the Bell there You’ be notified every time we have a new video coming your way okay for a height and sense of
It I recommend the lag shot highly you can actually use the lag shot driver it’s even longer for a little bit more of the experience it’s Ultra flexible and I can really start to feel how my movement here if I just literally wiggle my middle I can start to feel the energy
Transfer out there and start to feel that sense that the golf club’s not only lagging but the shaft itself is bending a great a great amount you’ll feel that in a much more heightened way with the lag shot let’s do a little shot here you could really see that Shar Bend
And when it bends of course it kicks back to impact which we’re going to talk about in just a little bit now there’s a link below to pick up a lag shot if you’d like one I think they’re great for warm-ups they’re a great training tool nothing better to teach you the feeling
Of loading the shaft and lagging than that now we’re going to try it with our club on a fairly small scale naturally I’m not going to feel that sort of Bend in the shaft but I can feel a pretty good amount of pop and lag in there again the
Goal is to create energy and movement not to hold lag as such now a lot of people when they start getting into this and they start to get the feel for this they feel like I’m not going to have any sort of control let’s talk about that how you
Can use lag you can use disassociation of the club but still feel directional and distance control okay let’s talk a little bit about timing for a second here because usually when I see people in lessons or whatnot start to get a bit of a sense of this
The club feels in a sense out of control it’s got so much movement and energy and it they think how am I going to time this first off golf is a game of there’s a lot of timing in golf you’re never going to get rid of that now momentarily
This final segment we’re going to look at firming up impact and how to really make this square up against the golf ball that’s our final piece but just a touch on timing if you picture fishing I’ve done a tiny bit of it I’ve watched it on TV say an expert fisherman sees
The Fisher biting there they pop the rod with just the right pop to send the lure and land it they really good fisherman on TV can land it pretty darn accurately at a relative distance that’s more like what you trying to do with this you’re not in a full shot trying to just
Control the club as I say we’ll touch on impact here in the final segment you’re trying to time your stroke like a fisherman so you pop get the most out of it and the most solid contact right where you need it you can do it with a
Bit of practice so using lag obviously it’s no good if you can’t hit the ball solidly so let’s have a look Ultra slow motion with an iron you’ll see shaft lean there Club tilted forward that pushes the face against the ball it also allows you to hit the ball before you
Hit the ground right when the shaft is about verticals when you’ll hit the ground so good alignment at golf watch the lpj lady here great lag watch how beautifully when she does let the energy pop out to the wrist she tilts the glove look at the back of her glove and really
Finds that solid impact alignment where the club is stable we’re back to our impact bag you may not have one but you could put a big beach towel against the wall or something like that we’re not trying to hit this hard this is a great sense this gives you a great sense of
How I can create this lag feel some spring in the wrist in the shaft but to hit something sizable firm it up there a little bit I see that in baseball I don’t really watch that much baseball but I’ve watched enough nice and soft here plenty
Of lag in the bat but solid when they hit the ball another feature you need to remember when you do that when you lag the club this is a biggie too and that is and this goes back to good grip again we’ve got videos about the grip you’ve
Got to have Mobility the ability to square but that is when you have more lag approaching contact these great players are like this it effectively aims the club out to the right for the right-handed golfer you not only need to spring it but you need to tilt the face
Back towards the ball one I wouldn’t call it an advantage but one thing that early releasers have it’s pretty easy to square the face I wouldn’t recommend it so as you work on this you’ve got to feel like as you snap into solid alignment there’s enough tilt in your
Glove to get that face de lofted and square there I can feel that face tilt down there and as as always time on task is the key but if you’re going to pick up something like this just give me a few more seconds here to try to help if
You’re going to pick up on something like this you have to be patient with yourself you have to do it at different speeds if you just get some fresh ideas in your head hopefully these are a good idea I think they are and go out and just whale balls at full speed don’t
Expect probably that much progress so do some on a small scale make it a little bit bigger do some on a bigger scale but extra soft like that up and down the scale you go you can do this stuff I’ve had plenty of students do super super
Well with their lag if they’ll go through this process I hope this helps you gives you a clear mental picture best of [Applause] Luck

Great video as always. I like how you keep things simple to understand.
Wow Adam. I asked a question about lag a few videos ago. This really spoke to me and helped A LOT. I was (am) guilty of trying to for the lag. Never thought about how I gotta release those angles eventually. GREAT comparison to fishing as well. Thanks for another great video.
Itβs amazing how powerful yet seemingly effortless your shot can be when you have the correct speed and lag, squashing the ball right at the sweet spot of the club.
Thank you Adam. Simple and effortless
Thankyou!!!
Time on task! Beast tip yet.
