On footy furnace Lee Matthews on collingwood’s Premiership hangover Jimmy Bartell on the speed demons and also essen’s big dilemma and what about the lines they’re Norton to and really struggling let’s fire up the [Applause] furnace hello and welcome to the first episode of footy furnace what a big show

Ahead a big year ahead as well and look at these two gentlemen beside me Australian Football Hall of Fame and Jimmy Bartell welcome to you Tom I’m the Godfather of football can I call you that Lee now Godfathers get killed I know call you the grandfather all right massive show ahead

Tonight and we’re going to start off as we’ll do every week with uh hot or heat so uh who’s hot this week and who is under the pump who are you showing heat to Lee oh obvious Heat this week last year’s two Grand finals are both not two

To start the season now the mathematics they’re not playing great long way to go we know but to finish top two and they genuine contenders they want to finish top two you can only lose five or six games a real Slim margin of error for for both Collingwood and Brisbane from

Now on so that’s a really uh a really unusual start to this season is there a world where Collingwood and Brisbane one of those teams missed the finals or not I missed the finals I think it’s going a bit far the team you had to win a flag

From outside the top four yeah well two games down but what but if you want to be top two you got to win 16 or seven games you can only lose four or five that’s the where the margin for eror has really shrunk over these last couple of

Weeks for those two teams now we will speak about the brisban Lions later on and they lost a freemantle uh later this evening but I think uh the Heat tonight has to be on the western Bulldogs I mean they’ve had a a summer of upheaval they’ve changed so many things off the

Field but on the field seemingly nothing seemed to change today and there’s so many elements to this Jimmy not just um their coaching panel and their head of football and off field but onfield as well Caleb Daniel is a sub he’s been a very good player for them for a long

Time Jack McCrae playing vfl I know that he’s not fully fit yet but he’s got four years left on a deal he’s a three-time all Australian like clubs are monitoring him and just seeing whether they could potentially Prime out of the dogs that today’s loss was terrible for them it’s

Not what they needed but we have seen the dogs start a bit slower than most in the past they did this last year and you kind of get to the midpoint and to use the American term they’re about 500 at the midpoint and in previous years they’ve been able to pull it together

Now they just missed last year but but they do do this he does throw the magnets around until he settles them down yeah what about the demons though well their their opponents today for me was what was hot and I think a lot of people have been waiting for the demons

Ball movement from their Premiership year and I just want to highlight Clary Oliver here because it Paints the picture really well he’s right where the star of the foot gets turned over and then Christian Peta normally the D’s when he receives the ball when Peta receives the ball here this when

Normally they go slow and a bit stodgy in the last 18 months but turn Face the game but Oliver keeps running and look at this big boy play just get out of away Clean Hands and then they can be creative in the forward line because they got space to move in everyone’s

Live everyone’s active they still took 140 marks but it was how uptempo they played and that’s the way I want to see melv play in all conditions this year what did you see from the D today that you lik Lee well I good one of the

Things that I really liked was Max gor’s comeback I mean last uh week against the swans a Grundy wrestled him and he just was ineffective uh today uh I don’t know who’s coaching the uh the ragman or Tim engy but Tim Eng wanted to jump at the

Center bounces now Max Gorn has this big right arm fend and pushes him out when he wants to jump he just pushes him out of where the ball’s going to drop then hit it with the other handed they end up having 18 to n in the center Clarance to

See the right arm last year I’m not sure they changed the rules we talked about as the max gone rule because Max is a strong but Grundy last week he just went and wrestled him and where Max couldn’t do this so I don’t know what Tim was

Trying to do he wanted to jump but jumping against Max G that big foot push of his uh of his right arm will put you out of position every time just on the days did that show enough today Jimmy to tell you that they’re going to improve

From where they were last year yeah I think so and I think Personnel plays a big part of it and and for me Tom McDonald is one of those in particular they’ve missed him for big bulks of the season last year and even the previous year and as he’s battled injuries I

Think he’s such a key player and they’ve always looked to put him back forward but for me uh Old McDonald Cal the farm for me to use the old Nursery r he went and played back and the important thing is he provided a fair bit of drive for

The D’s he got involved in the game 10 marks but he’s got a huge work rate we know he’s got a big tank when he’s played forward but he takes a opposition big forward as well which again gives you the option of freeing up lever to

Intercept the footy well Steven May is a great ball user at that backline this is what Luke beverage had to say after the game in his press conference I reckon Melbourne kicked six to eight goals from just blatant um turnovers which again we’ve we felt like we’re in a good place with

Is that why Sanders was subbed out like he’d only just had his fourth turnover not long for yeah it was just it was a coincidence definitely not definitely not the reason so that’s Luke beverage after the match lamenting the turnovers Riley Sanders being subbed off was an

Interesting call but Caleb Daniel is not a turnover Merchant at all he hits targets and the fact he started started as a sub was interesting I’m fascinated by the dogs this year I know I’m not the only one not just because of their coach and their players the club itself theyve

Such just a high standard and haven’t been able to meet it really since the 2021 Grand Final well they B they’ve had a couple of good septembers haven’t they in 16 and 21 wasn’t it when they got to the Grand Final they’ve never finished top four so they’ve always been around

The middle of the ladder but yes had a couple of good really good uh good septembers to get to those Grand Final one they won of course but at the moment I mean it is interesting that Caleb Daniels not now thought to be now starting 22 Jack mccrae’s made his way

Into that situation bayy Smith a couple of years ago was a really really good player yeah not playing at the moment but he fell off the perch last year so um it is interesting what what the future holds for the Bulldogs I must say they’ll be a good team they’ll be round

The mark one team you mentioned off the top was Brisbane there they Norton too and they lost tonight by 23 points over in Perth this was a defeat that was bizarre because they kicked the first four goals of the game then Freo keep the next eight Jimmy yeah and it’s all

Off the back of stoppage and I think that’s when Carlton got on top even with young Jack Carol who came on as a sub against the blues but it was Caleb song Caleb song Set A freeo record tonight with 46 disposals the most in Freo history you think they’ve had Dave Mundy

That five in in his prime as well he’s had 10 clearances brayshaw 32 and I think about six clearance and Lee you and I were talking off when we’re watching the game it was three or number eight or Yeah just they just kept popping up all those players but it was

From stoppage where they did the damage and it’s a territory game it is well we know Loy wasn’t there but that meant that the that getting first hands on the ball but both song and brao soon to be able to get first hands on the ball and

Still extricated into space so that I butan after that bad start freem manal were just outstanding either of you subscribe to the theory that when you have such a short preseason compared to other teams freem manal Mis finals Brisbane and Collingwood um who are Norton to as we’ mentioned both played

In a grand final it has a substantial difference at the start of the year I say no to that what do you say yeah I’m no to that as well I think you’re so well prepared um yeah you tend to be season players playing deep in finals

You know how to get ready yeah are you concerned about the lines at all League oh you have to be I mean they were pretty good for part of the game against uh against cartton last week got over one point I mean could have gone either

Way but uh they’ve gone over to Perth and freem manal a bit of an unknown not quite sure where they’re going to be are they bottom third or they in that next bracket the middle third of the ladder which on the performance tonight they may well be in that middle third it

Seems like a connection piece they’re just a little bit off and we could say the same thing about Collingwood it’s that’s where the the big difference is when sides are flying it’s that connection from mid to forward because most sides can defend really well and brison’s being defend against really

Well they’ve just missing that final little touch they weren’t in the first 40 minutes of the opening round they were 46 points in front yeah it’s amazing isn’t it well it is amazing I mean that’s the kind of the emotional roller coaster that uh play individual players and teams go through means the

Same group can as it happened in that game yeah Lions dominated the first quarter Calton dominated the third quarter same group of players yeah momentum plays a big part absolutely yeah there’s some injuries tonight for Foo as well Warner with a concussion a McDonald with a knee there’s been a

Spate of knee and achilles injuries over the last couple of weeks and we think Brandon Cox has hurt his hamstring as well but this is seemingly the uh the bad concussion there towards the start of the game good that he gave a thumbs up going off but the Oscar McDonald won

At his third club and that is just ugly to look at Jimmy yeah the tall stocks C an absolute burden you throw in sha Darcy out as well in the Rock and it it comes down to some of those young players Jo Miss actually played a really good game today again four goals

Beautiful set shot so it’s how they can move the magnets and still be just as effective that looked like a really bad hamstring but that was is better than the knee it looked like his knee might have buckled I mean that would have been

A 12 months or so it might be a long hamstring recovery but that’s better than the ACL we saw Josh goer on Saturday as well we saw Josh gibus last week for Richmond it’s not good news all right it’s time for fand the Flames footy’s only official rebuttal segment Saturday

Onun I’m taking you today Jimmy and Lee hope that’s okay with both of you before we start let me set it up by uh repeating the news from late last week which is Justin longm has signed a one-year contract extension at freemantle and this was the doctor’s CEO

Simon garlic speaking on SC radio regarding that extension like every decision we make here it’s Dum with the thought of how do we actually provide ourselves with the best chance success and jl’s obviously at the center of that and a critical part of that and that

Group is as connected as it’s ever been so if they’re as connected as they’ve ever been and if Justin longm is a critical part of it why is it only one year so I don’t care if the doctors don’t believe that Justin longm is their man they should do what port did last

With Ken hinley and just wait and see but if they do believe he’s their man give him two years the one year seems to be neither here nor there what what do you thought we very rarely see oneye extensions for coaches we do but perfect

For me I think once you’ve been a coach and you’ve been there he’s been there three years years then Contracting for two years in the future is plenty why do you want if three or four years into the future I mean coaches don’t go and get

Poached in all honesty so I think from the club’s point of view I think that’s a really good decision what do you think Jimmy gives them plenty of options they can see how the season plays out we just saw as three players went down there could be exua circumstances do you get

Another year and and have a look if those players come back does he find a new way to to play moving the ball forward or the way they defend so it gives him lots of options yeah okay well we all disagree on that and I think two years would have been absolutely enough

Um Port showed a bit against west coast today they could have won by a lot more here and I guess their new look outfit with some Defenders that have come in were really good as well Lee well always wondering I mean they were top four last

Year had a bad second half of the year and didn’t didn’t make it to the final couple of games but uh radical Le is a big Defender you’ve got Zer Thatcher who’s a good mediumsized Defender Of course Soo a big Ruckman and L set was

Pretty solid and I think Soo is kind of a jourian big solid Ruckman but he can compete well in there so I thought they were three good pickups to actually helpfully um like they always look like a really big Defender short quite regularly and rala is the big got the

Size so I think they’re good pickups and what they do is for either end and I I’ll touch on on the forwards in a second but what it does down back it frees up air so when you got R goair and Z thater doing their job you get air I

Think in his best spot which is being that intercept Mark which he just reads the game at the other end um no Ruck Chuck is what I’m going to co this because I don’t want Charlie Dixon playing in the Rock I know he can get himself in the game but what Soo does

And Jordan swed who they got from the dogs is you got to leave this man forward he he can go on the rck during the season but when the whips are cracking in finals which Port want to get over that hump into a grand final

Need him to be the full forward the big Target kick long down the line to him and weo holding up rck who actually hit the scoreboard today with two goals himself I think they look much better when it comes to the big finals as big Chaz at full forward so the margin was

50 points today and probably one of the sto the the stories of the game before the game even started was Harley Reed pick one so much hype around him he had eight touches in the first quarter 16 for the match what did you make of it he

Doesn’t look like an he’s a big powerful kid and he’s obviously a very good player and he will his first glimpses and that’s what it was for me really it’s at this kind of level he was he looks like he’ll be a good play good balance Obviously good strength good

Skills now he’ll be a terrific pick up my take away from it he he looks comfortable in these moments where saying which that’s why he’s the number one pick in the contest when it’s man B man you just got to get used to as a young player the opposition as a team so

When he’s come out of the backline there there’s team defenses you’re playing against guys who played 150 games they know where to go and they punish you on turnover one team well I think port in the running to win the flag West Coast aren’t but every week at the end of

Segment one we’re going to put our flag in the ground and make some bold declarations I think they Le that’s the best way to put we make them right now we do it right now so you can change it well so let’s chat our Premiership winners forward 2024 I mentioned Port

Aday there I’m going for Port I think they’re the Forgotten team of last year’s top eight I think they can absolutely win the flag they can win enough games so those those new additions are are what got you backing I think we forget about P cuz they’ve been

Up there for so long and haven’t won the thing I still think that the Defenders that have come in and the natural improvement from Rosine Butters they’re right up there for me so I’m tipping port at this stage you might be shocked who I’m going as my Premiership flag in

The sand or whatever you may say flag the ground flag in the ground we’re putting it in the sand because it’s summer weather out there the Giants of course um I think the the natural Improvement you still got to remember they needed West Coast to beat the dogs

And then to win round 23 and 24 to get in the finals now they made the most of the finals but I still think there’s huge room for improvement with that side I got to flip my number two from preseason which was the Giants up above

Ain oh you’ve got up so we’ve got lines on the screen the yeah know that was was hour we got to actually right now in it as it stands right now not two I’m going for the Giants well well what just quickly on the Giants what is it that

Impresses you about the Giants the most and the way they play well last week against Collingwood they were outstand they just look like they’re aside that like two years ago half the team you knew them but we didn’t know much about and they’ve all come through as a group

They they don’t look like they got any kind of age problem with them they’ got a demographic that looks like Improvement good big forwards good Defenders now they look like a really really solid team and they’ve they’ve started two Zips so that’s enough to to

The top of my tree Le flip from half an hour ago it’s incredible J after that result in their first two games I can see why he done let’s see if the market agrees thanks to points spit and I imagine that probably agree with both of

You port laay not up there at all but I still there Tom yeah the city swans as well think the C swans there are two wins have been super impressive against Melbourne who finished top four in the Home and Away season last year and of course Collingwood will get to that in a

Little bit well after that break I speak of we’re going to get your thoughts on those Premiership pies and that dirty word the Premiership hangover and a late controversy at the caty last night with Patty Dangerfield as the hero stay with us on footy furnace and a hurry it’s on its way out

Snatched from the side bottom hand ball Warner lines up Warner breaks the shackles kicks the first of the nine Hamil to heene streams towards goal Mark again Chad Warner should convert and he does war up caress that gorgeous line from the moment it left the boat he can do some special things

Chad Warner and he just showed us one There that is the hottest hand of the round thanks to Crown no surprise it’s Chad Warner he had 26-1 last week 27 and3 Jimmy Bartell the other n who was fantastic he looks lean this year he’s dropped a couple of kilograms and that’s not the matter too much I know people

We’re not doing the weights in the footy record but he looks lean he looks Dynamic you can see him bursting out of stoppage again and even pushing forward that big Mark we haven’t seen a lot of that in his game but if he does that

More often he’s a goal a game 25 plus touches that’s Dynamic all right we’re going to get to the D’s and the pies in a moment but this is a segment you’re not going to want to miss every week it’s Lee Matthews and I say this completely seriously in all his glory

From the lips of lethal SN kicked a goal well I think it’s almost sa religious to declare that I think the swans were a better team without buddy Franklin now you were talking the veteran buddy Franklin of course the 36y old but him retiring and going out of

The swans team and they got the big chunk of Sal cap money which able them to get Brody Grundy so I reckon minus buddy plus Grundy is making swans a better team they’ve they’ve stayed up around the mark for the most of this Century really the swans their list

Management been outstanding and the ability I think the the gry thing just sort of happened but the fact that Buddy’s career had come to the end and to have the have the money to pay Brody Grundy who not a superstar Ruckman but he’s a really competitive one who helps

At ground level he’s not that great in the air okay at the H out doesn’t Mark the ball much but gets in after the ball at ground level which helps the S the whole Swan clearance game so yep I think the swans are better off for Brody in

And Buddy out the swans would never say this publicly because buddy was so good for them for so long but make no mistake the swans had had enough of Buddy last year they were ready to move on from Buddy last year and the fact that he retired without a press conference makes

Me think that buddy was probably done with the swans as well that it was time to part ways and they’ve got all this multi-prong forward line now that’s working beautifully without him well the first two games show that Logan McDonald has definitely become a focal point you’re throwing a Marty mle going

Forward you know you got Haywood who takes the goal score at the moment there’s few more different options but um they did he did leave a massive hole we’re talking one of the alltime great so um they’ve done well to not recover but actually fill the void very quickly

All right let’s talk about the swans and they scor some turnovers specifically the way they managed to get the ball back off their opposition and hurly well their pressure was good but quing would really shot themselves in the foot half a dozen times where they just gave the

Ball back to the Swans in really advantageous positions like just outside the 50 mle line and the swans must have run into open goals three or four times that when that happens you know there’s been a really bad turnover just uh just not far from the swan’s goal well you

Here you have look at all all these edits coming up here and once your team’s got the ball and Collingwood said they want to go faster so as soon as your team’s got the ball and we see with a couple of these errors everyone’s joining in attack but if you can turn it

Over really high you catch so many of the opposition on the wrong side of the ball which in turn to those easy goals where we got McDonald kicking it into the top tier we’re not used to seeing the pi scored against so easily either and there’s some numbers that back this

Up Jimmy it’s pretty concerning all B early on in the season well it scores off off turnover and off intercepts and now a couple of those I don’t think you can coach for someone you know stubbing their foot going across goal as well but it’s a bit of that balance too you’ve

Got some Defenders Charlie Dean’s getting used to playing with Darcy Moore so you’ve got a bit of that connection piece in your back half but pressure around the ball as well as soon as they’re turning the ball over the opposition’s then taking it for full toll Nick Doos it’s a dilemma isn’t it

It is a dilemma I mean Nick’s a wonderful player only young only his third year but he can play defense Midfield and he can play forward probably but I reckon playing off halfback he CH he starts their running game because he’s he plays so optimist so optimistically but accurately so in

Other words he’ll give it and go again yeah and I I just he was good on F on what Friday night wasn’t it when he had 35 possessions he was really good in the Midfield but I do think his value might be the most as a core coming off

Halfback and he starts their running game with Jack chrisp and deoy but I think he initiates so much of that uh that play that has made Collingwood so uh so good in the r in couple of years leave him with half back harder easy to taret halfback though because that’s

What opposition clubs will have to contend with themselves I think he’s one of the most difficult players to tag full stop you see whenever he actually receives the ball you watch his footwork really closely uh you don’t seem him get tackled very often but it is difficult at halfback because it means you’re

Meeting someone that you want to have for your forward structure Le I love it when you make headlines and you did a few weeks ago with what I’m calling the popcorn Theory well I’m not calling it Jared Healey called it the popcorn Theory and that is a group of

Collingwood players sitting and watching uh themselves win a Premiership last year and then watching themselves uh achieve the ultimate again on the ground now the popcorn theory is a is just a slogan I guess for Collingwood having a Premiership hangover let’s call it what it might be two games into the season uh

What do you F of the way calling to play and is it a premise hangover well I guess you go on your own values and I think sitting through watching the lovely memory of winning a grand for I’m talking the players the people inside the W line not the fans and and that

Kind of thing that you’ve got to be able to put it behind sort of last year it’s a lovely memory but you got to get yourself into the present and sitting in the pachy theater watching your 23 Grand Final I I thought no my players wouldn’t

Be doing that if I was coach for instance now kraber crra might not have had the option because sometimes the marke team overrides what the coach thinks so I’m not quite sure exactly what Craig thinks but that was my that was my thinking first and foremost but bottom

Line they’ve started the season really badly they’re playing badly now the Premiership hangover things a bit of just a word really but doesn’t matter now what you were going into round one or opening round now with two losses down they got a little bit of making up

To do I’ve got a bit of a a different look at it and I’m not disagreeing with Lee Matthews because that’s rule 101 when you join the AFL media but I I’m all for the positive affirmation seeing yourself do something pretty awesome it’s pretty good motivation and sometimes the the stick doesn’t always

Work so sometimes the pat on the back seeing yourself do something pretty cool can lift players and that’s the affirmation you need you also got to remember they’ve ran into two pretty good sides they’ve ran into a pre preliminary finals in the Giants so they just beat only by Point prelim on their

Home deck a week earlier than they usually used to so it’s a pretty good and they right in it but kick poly the swans are a very good side we’ve just spent the last 5 minutes talking about how good the swans have started the season so Premiership hangover or have

They ran into two really good sides and we just need to be patient yeah okay so you’re being patient with the pies and we all patient we think they can turn it around but I don’t think it’s a hangover I I yet I don’t think we’ve given enough

Credit to the two sides that have beaten them okay um cats and Saints last night this was a game that didn’t reach Great Heights until the very end when Patty Dangerfield kicked what was probably only can be described as a captain’s goal what did you make of the way this

Game played out specifically more so well I must say when I started watching it I thought s ding had changed his number cuz all Dey was like he’s twin but so he was the the swan the jalong won and Dangerfield was good cam was good all all their weapons were good

Dempsey was probably the new kid on the Block who did a bit last night and that’s what jalong need the New Kids on the Block to be winning them to be winning them games yeah you you mentioned Dempsey who was Dynamic with three goals especially early and but

You’re throwing bruan and that was the ask for jalong can he Turn 5 minutes into quarters into games he was very good um CL Clark showed a bit more as well but then um max Holmes I know there’s a lot of discussion around him down at jalong but he was super

Throughout the game he’s a line breaker got speed they need those group that group there to really lift for jalong to get back in the finals so most people are glass half empty about the cats this year but they have been for the last 20 years yeah but eventually eventually

What are you um I’m pretty positive they’ve still got the home ground advantage and I think that certainly played a factor against the Saints cuz there was periods of that game in the second half where the Saints outplayed them and made the most their opportunities but I feel like chalong

Squeezed them throughout the night and didn’t give him enough opportunities all right Dangerfield’s goal at the end big Captain’s mind oh yeah just having the moment you know you go back set shot you got to think about it all the pressure’s on you and uh that that free kick was an

Interesting one what do you think well I don’t think that’s a free Kick the idea is if if you slide through the other guys’s legs the SEC blow there was down for the ball and Patty went over the top of him he had the ball stock had the

Ball first I get the rule which you’ve got right here read it to me I’ll read it to you so it’s 10.7 pointb um making forceful comp contact below the knees of an opposition player or executing a forceful action towards the lower leg causing the opposition player to take

Evasive action is all that the no no it’s not he stalker is there first so actually he should be protected at all costs I would say to stalker and it’s this ends ridiculous because obviously never played the game at the highest level in you guys have but I’ll say it

Anyway because I spoke to someone who has played the game at the highest level today and he has the same opinion keep your feet cuz that is dangerous what we saw just noer going down for the ball in the first place keep your feet am I able

To ask for our team to play that one more time because he’s actually reaching out a full Pace yeah and as you as you get here it comes again Watch doer from the other angle he’s reaching at full Pace even if he takes the ball yeah Dangerfield’s going to go over the top

Of him so what’s it if he stalkers if ball’s in his hands so you’re happy with Jamie Graham breaking his league in the waffle a few years ago finish his career there’s accidents that happen in the game and I understand the rule of keeping your feet but I just don’t think

It applied there I’m I’m happy to be wrong but it’s just my thoughts we’re all happy to be wrong we prefer to be right though Ross line is very rarely wrong and this was uh Ross the Boss after the game I I tell you what I do

Know the phone in the coaches Box’s very sturdy cuz it got to work out um I’ve been Bing the phone like that for years right so it was very therapeutic um but I was frustrated because you know this group’s been very predictable um to delivering what we

Wanted was was just for whatever reason we quite inconsistent so this game was played in jong’s front halfly and it was frustrated Ross line because the margin was eight points but he would have thought that they had their chances the Saints well they probably did have their

Chances I mean well they main goal kicker Max King kick two goals four had half a dozen shots but I mean they’ll be much better if Max can kick 42 you know in other words get get the 60% conversion rate rather than the other way around but they they were

Competitive that’s what I I didn’t think jalong slaughtered them it was down at jalong we know how good jalong are down there but I thought were in the game yeah what do you say the Saints this year Jimmy um I I think their expectation to be playing finals because

We know they’re a sound defensive unit anybody under Ross line becomes very good at defense but they’ve got the flare Wang name Miller you know Henry Darcy Wilson look great out on on the wing so I think their expectation to be finals all right plenty more to come on

Footy furnace the bargain pickup that could win his Club the flag and also the Dilemma facing the dawns after a huge win yesterday against the Hawks stay with us Welcome back to Footy furnace presented by Crown let’s talk about essin and Hawthorne yesterday it was essin by 24 points at the MCG the Hawks showed a little bit but in the end it was the essen’s Midfield dominance that really changed the game yeah store scores from stoppage sorry everything’s normally a

Turnover game but sometimes if you take care of the stoppages we’ve highlighted a few games it can be a good score source and an ability to actually own the ground and EST really dominated that aspect of the game they kicked 10 goals a margin of plus 40 points that in that

Area one of the reasons not only big Todd Goldstein that the boom recruit the young fellow running around there but Archie Perkins moving into the midfield for me was massive when you’re there live it was quite noticeable his impact around the stoppage it’s this ability to

Break free and Le you touched on with the young Foo tyos there in the Midfield it’s the ability to actually take it away from that congested area and when they were under the pump in the third quarter he still had the ability to push forward and hit the scoreb he kicked his

Two goals in the third quarter as you can see there when the game is in the balance he had lots of clearances lots of pressure but his ability to step through traffic so here’s the conundrum uh for eston when Dary Parish comes back because he took a lot of dary’s Midfield

Minutes where do he get the balance right for me I’m playing Perkins as a midfielder resting forward not as a forward coming into the Midfield so what does Parish fit in then well he he can do he’s swapping with somebody I’d be moving somebody else find find another

Person uh to you know sacrifice minutes the type of the he plays I mean he had 12 tackles he kicked a couple of goals I mean good in the Midfield he you reckon he’s the new midfielder changes their mix a little bit I reckon Meritt and Parish had got a

Bit of similarities about them so having another another type in there I think that help they were lucky yesterday a little bit I mean they kicked accurately 17 goals five I mean h could have easily won the game nothing in it but I think Perkins was the sort of The Shining

Light of the next bade coming through and SN been waiting for this Cox was drafted to pick eight in 2020 Perkins was pick nine and Reed was Big 10 now Cox and Reed haven’t quite hit their straps yet they needed one of those to become a really really good player and

That looks like it’s going to be Archie Perkins at least in the short term there’s some mro controversy yesterday as well James Sicily has been given a week for kicking now we didn’t expect this but this was the footage yesterday so sic has been in a bit of trouble with

The mro over the years and uh well he’ll have to well my understanding is Hawthorne is considering its options whether it does take this to the tribunal or not but that is the incident does that deserve a weak Lee got a mark scope to find it I must say does it meet

The bar for Force that’s the only question will be asking yeah impact does it actually reach the bar we don’t want to see people kicking each other but I think that’s what ha will have a look at they’re having a look at that they got to decide by 10: a.m. tomorrow Mason

Redmond has been offered a week for striking again ESS and considering its options this has being compared to the one at the gabber last week does this deserve a week or not Jimmy well the the AFL would be saying the difference is this is off the ball compared to George

Hu the one you’re talking about which skid it off the shoulder so they’d say that they’re completely different if he had clinch F there’d be no doubt he probably got a couple weeks was open hand but I I guess you can strike with an open hand which is really

What the match review process has found yeah that was either going to be a week or nothing it wasn’t going to be a fine once it was graded the way it was uh the Hawks lost but they had some sorry Jimmy yeah it’s about touch on the Hawks which

Is which is very similar to what I was discussing with there and when I walked away from the game it’s the next step for Hawthorne is they’ve got so much midfi Midfield Talent and they’ve all got something a little bit different when you go through them and for them is

Finding the balance and I reckon they’ll use this year to really find who are key players in different moments of the game so most of the game against Essen they ran with Nukem Nash and warpool warpool had a very good game lots of clearances lots of tackles but you rattle through

Some of the names and Dave wasn’t out there Dave Ward McDonald McKenzie Nukem warpool Nash McKenzie and then you’ve got the the other guys that you could throw through that wed has potential cuz he’s athleticism more we’ve seen go through Center boun as Ro maybe in the

Future Watson as well and impan Amon if you really needed a stretch so this is the battle that they’ve got going forward is do you pick one really attacking and two defensive do you go mcginness in there who’s another one I didn’t mention as the tager so I think

The challenge for Hawthorne is what is our mix going to look like going forward and I think one thing horor has done really well is sell the vision to their members and their fans easier after you win four Flags to do that but I think they’re selling this rebuild really well

The Giants and North had a game yesterday as well it was the Giants by 9 points I think we’re looking at North going they’re performing reasonably well for how young they are and the Giants were just too slick in the end but uh I want to talk about Jesse Hogan because I

Know that he’s been there for what 18 months now but uh essentially he was picked up off a scrap peap Jimmy by the Giants um the Giants traded out Zack langon for pick 45 to West Coast they then used pick 45 to bring in Jesse Hogan and he’s kicked 10 goals in two

Games and it might be a bit premature but he’s playing like a Coleman medalist in the early stages of the Season well we we all knew he had that top end capability we saw early days at Melbourne only glimpses at fre and this is the old thing Lee when you’re happy

Your football tends to flow on from that and I I just think he’s at a really mature stage of his life he’s found a happy place up there in Sydney and the way that the Giants are playing he’s giving him plenty of looks for of the

Foot but he’s I mean but he’s actually you don’t often have the late 20s almost was he 38 or 29 that actually improves significantly in that La that 28 29 uh age group as you say shown glimpses of that hasn’t he whole career but he’s things haven’t haven’t worked for him

But right at the moment he’s as good as anyone in that 450 are you more likely to see a player at 29 who’s a key position player become better or a midfielder well maybe a C position player because sometimes they take a long time to develop but there’s been a

Lot of other things probably have gone on in Jess Jesse’s life gone from Club to Club but as you said he’s now seems to be settled in his existence and so is his footing I think everyone wants the the tail end of their career to be like

Tom Hawkins who’s had that for the last seven years and what been about a five time all Australian when he’s done it Harry Shel at the other end of his career at the very start and he had 32 disposals yesterday what are you looking for from North this year well I think

It’s more about their youth be big yesterday I mean they kicked accurately and and the Giants didn’t so it was like 40 scoring shots to 20 odd something like that so I mean they the giant dominated the game but uh from North’s point of view it’s being being competitive but actually through the

Next Generation uh they’re the ones that I think they’ll be they and everyone else will be looking at the most yeah a bit of system to their footy what are they going to look like going to get beaten like they did on the weekend from turnover where the Giants were just a

Bit more mature and a bit more slick for them you know what I love about North Melbourne aside from the way they’re promoting their kids it’s their jumper the bounding R jumper is fantastic I know it’s a sort of a throwback to Winston Abraham hangers with Winston

Abraham that’s all we want and uh and and Brett Allison and others in the late 90s but I absolutely love this jumper and I know why they’re doing it because it’s 25 years since they won the flag in 99 but I think Club should lean in on

This more I mean that that would attract a whole section of fans that are about my age a lot of jumpers now you know the blue and white stripes is a bit too basic me I like it I like the Banning R and I like the gws jumper as well

Actually I think it appeals to the fans plenty more to come on footy furnace we’re going to talk about Adam ‘s conundrum at Richmond and plenty more after this welcome back to Footy furnace horrible conditions up in Queensland last night where go Coast got the points

By goal over the Adelaide crows uh what did you make of this performance Jimmy uh they’re Che side now no longer is the young goal Co Sons when you look at that Midfield Ra’s a beast Anderson just keeps improving and you’re throwing Miller who missed a big chunk of last

Year as well just they they look mature and ready to go well the rail Revival in a way when he played his first three games what about three years ago now he just dominated and he hasn’t really got back to that level and the difference

With his game is if he’s going at his best he’ll go and get the ball no matter what he gets his hands on the ball but can he get clear of the tackler and in the last couple of games he’s had a lot of a lot of B but he’s actually been

Able to work his way into the space as well and feed the ball off a little bit unpressured bit like Patrick Crips at times sometimes the tackle is hanging off them all the time and they’ll get a disposal but it’s under increased intense pressure so his his first couple

Of games have been outstanding which is an important point because he averaging there on the screen 31 touches but 23 of them are contested like the the split is enormous normally guys who are the 30 possession Mark you’re around the 50/50 they get some easy ball and the odd Kick

Mark he just doesn’t do that he just is a brute inside the crows on the road are really struggling under Matthew Nicks it’s actually interesting that now Matthew Nicks is the only coach that hasn’t signed a contract extension this year he’s the only had contract coach

This year now he will but this must be a concern for them that they keep losing on the road I think it’s a sign of where they’re coming from and it’s a sign going from an average side to a good side to a regular final side is that you

Can win anytime anywhere I think the Improvement for them last year they pushed a lot of sides a long way with that winning 16.4 points is the average margin so they haven’t been blown out the water but they haven’t won either there was no text no pH thought but they

Weren’t really prepared to play you know they’ll come to play the old footy terms Le you know starts with you in the middle all those footy cliches should they play Tex um teex Tex said that he was available but probably couldn’t travel it’s round one surely if they

Want to win the game play best not well I mean it ended up being difficult conditions it wasn’t marking conditions I mean it was not wet and sweaty it was just wet and therefore it was one of those games that there were sort of sloppy conditions very hard to handle

The ball clearly Under Pressure goal Coast are difficult to beat up there and obviously with the form they’re in yeah Carlton and Richmond played on Thursday night the margin was Five Points was a ripping game in the end the blues got the job done we will talk about the game

In a second but my ears uh perked up a little bit today when I heard Jack syani on 3w assessing his own team’s performance when he was doing Special comments yeah I think the way we moved the ball on Thursday was very different to the way we moved the ball against

Brisbane when we started to get going we played very straight very slow um pretty boring footy boring footy is interesting I like the honesty but you don’t hear it very often do you no and I think it comes to and we touched on it before is the connection inside Ford 50 and if

Caron is going to make that leap or be a top four side they’ve got the tools in front maai and KERO but you can fall in the Trap when you got so much talent of just dumping the footy but I’ve highlighted some really good ones that

Comes from mg and it’s low flat and hard the only person who can get it was KERO KERO as we just CLE it he’s pointing to the space floston all he can do is hang on for dear life you’ll see another one here Kono pointing that’s the space Just

Landing there and it’s good when you see the big forwards kick it to each other really well there’s not much you can do at worst there’s a spoil but it’s an easy place for the ball to fall for the cartton smalls if they tidy up they kicking inside Ford 50 they’ll be much

Better so that difference of training to kick the ball sort of 10 m from where your teammate is so he can move into it rather than just the long high kick trying to get the extra 10 m but you’re lob it high in the air and that just

Suits the defense so that that kind of ball use Harry and Charlie up forward Le well Harry and Charlie are so good they they got seven against the Lions and the rest of the team got six they got uh five last week the rest of the team got

Seven I think but the fact is you always think that they going to average six goals a game between them because they’re two really good big forwards but the other the rest of them have to be getting closer to eight and 10 you got to be thinking we got to kick 15 goals

Like you sometimes win with 12 goals but you don’t win by much with you’re say C are too reliant on those two absolutely have been for a while and I think they still are I mean Jack Martin’s out there’s who who can be that third or fourth forward but that is just one

Vulnerability they’ve got they need more maybe Midfield goalkeepers or small forwards always kicks you know couple a down again well Midfield the the key for me Lee and that was always encouraging my time at Jo the midfielders got to push forward and ask questions of Ste J

Didn’t need a need a no he didn’t need anymore but but last year Crips and Cher only kicked nine goals between them they’re better than that they should be aiming for the goal of game I know that’s a high Benchmark we’ve got in front of us when you’ve got the Peta

Martin but Walsh when he’s back fit can push forward break 50 Crips has got the ability when he’s resting forward to hit the scoreboard when you look at uh Premiership sides now the lines are wider a little bit differently because they got six uh pretty key forwards most

Premiership sides have five to six players with 20 plus goal keys so that normally means one or two midfielders are pushing around a goal of game how much wonder how much Adam us is aging every week at the moment it’s a tough gig isn’t it oh well well they all they

Had a good game on the on the last Friday as we know and they only got beaten by points so they in that game and could have almost won it after a bad first up game against the against the Suns but yeah one of the one of the

Issues I guess with them is is the number of sort of Veteran or or Dynasty ex Dynasty players not just Prem players well the players who actually played in the three Premiership so they were it’s a great team and uh they’ve still got about you know 12 or 13 of those but

It’s much harder for those guys when they haven’t got the other 10 or so players they had a few back last week I me Martin back and Lynch back that helped a lot in C ask you what would you do with someone like Noah Balter so on the weekend fantastic game he’s forward

Trained all summer is forward you lose gibus do we throw him back it seems to me do you take him back to sort of hopefully hang on to a game then pinch it late or do you really try and stretch the opposition with Lynch Martin and

Balter Ford yeah my my instincts is you know he’s a really good Defender and I don’t think their defense is looking that solid that they can afford to have him out of the defense so I’d bolster my fense uh which just as a principle um and therefore sacrifice I guess the fact

That he can he can play forward all right coming up next on footy furnace thanks to Crown Jake Stringer is Tom Green the afl’s first $2 million man in the making and the biggest and the best Falcon ever stay with Us left foot snack let’s keep one of the goals of the Year welcome back to Footy furnace news just a hand I’ve got news from North Melbourne that bouncing R jumper half a dozen times this year selected games only I want minimum 12 games for the bouncing R all

Right time for the Sunday snapshot the Han Sunday snapshot these are the moments that will shape the post round discussion Jimmy take us away well snapshot the person I’ve highlighted is very good at snapshot and it’s Jack ginan I think he’s got some unbelievable forward craft he can find Space inside

Ford 50 better than most I just highlighted him here he’s timing here on the Hawthorne turnover he just gets out the back of his direct opponent Martin at the right time he doesn’t blast out there but straight away he’s thinking ahead where am I forward uses his left

Foot brings him up at the footy kicked a couple of goals as he builds his Fitness remember he’s only 21 these moments will last longer in a game and we’ll just see more and more games like he put out on the weekend good pick up for the Hawks

Can I talk about another forward from that game Jake Stringer it’s round one and he looks really fit he looks fit that’s fairly unusual for Jake but he looks really fit he kicked four goals and while he’s in that shape he’s a really good player um so he got got his

Four goals yesterday but he looked he looked you know looked in really good shape and that’s it’s a contract here Lee it’s a contract here matter we touched on R Perkins before because of Perkins playing that forward who goes in the Midfield Stringer got to stay

Forward for the most of the day what about the crowds over the weekend for those who didn’t like opening round I liked opening round I think it needs to be tinkered with a little bit maybe have a Sunday game as well the round one crowds was the uh the most people ever

For around one 43,45 uh beat the record from round one 2017 by let’s how my math here about 13,000 people so um lots of people going to the foot over the weekend and people really enjoying it as well now Tom Green who’s just a a next Superstar he’s only

23 coming through at the Jo the salary Cap’s going to be 20 million thereabouts in 20127 some player might be heading towards the $2 million that’s about 10% of the salary Gap Nick Doos might be the first but Tom Green might well be the second Jimmy he’s going to cost you a

Lot of money over the next decade contract let 27 when the contract starts I tell you he’s a101 to be the next captain of the Giants though he’s pretty short hey hey Jared witz I absolutely love as a footballer I think he’s been magnificent for the goal Coast Suns up

There actually has the record for most wins as a captain up there but he didn’t have his finest moment I’m not putting witty in too much because they’ll show this at the team many is that not the greatest Falcon that you’ve ever seen a wet footy as well when you’re a little

Kid and you got out the balls with JY and hit your hands and face it had that real feel AR would take until about today for his face to get feeling back he was blinds people in front of him and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was put

Through the hi as well concussion the H good moment for round one is quite clearly Jeremy Cameron and I don’t want to speak too out of school here but I think this goal reminds me of probably my favorite goal when I was a kid and that was Jeff Farmer at the wing at

Waverly he gets it on Center Wing he follows up and ends up slotting it from the band that’s nothing like the whizzers The Whiz kick a barrel to finish not it’s not quite the whiz but I still enjoyed it a lot that was a great goal last he’s a running key position

Player isn’t he it’s more like the running forward flanker type but G does it well where do you rank him in terms of uh AFL players the most valuable players I bet this time last year he was about to start an incredible couple of months and and he fell off a bit after

That so right at the moment I’m not sure he’s in the top two or three yeah put it that way not quite maybe by the end of the year all right plenty to come on footy furnace there’s lots of heat and Jimmy and Lee will be back after this in a

Moment yes you’re watching footy furnace presented by Crown it’s time for head over half powered by points spit and this man’s going to join us every single week his name is Julian Valance Jules welcome to the show what have you got for us thanks Tom now we know footy is a very

Passionate emotional game and whether we’re hearing from the media supporters or even the players it all comes from the heart our aim to offset out a little bit insights from the head so what did we see in round one that the points bet trading floor has identified and the key

Here we’re going to talk about is more or less the value of a big forward now as soon as this Market came out C versus Richmond $128 versus $350 Richmond now $350 well that’s just generic term of 28% winning chance Richmond had Lynch is named in the team the big forward comes

In now we know n cvis and Dusty also joined but we he they can sort of account for it where they are in their uh careers about 2 3% what did Richmond actually start at the bounce $250 a 40% winning probability at the bounce with Lynch in that’s a 12% winning chance

Change from him not being in to being in the market really loves big forwards and they really identify him I’ve got a comparison here and the comparison’s probably been blown out of the water because the fact that Freeman will have knocked off Brisbane but if you look at

Do 57 Brisbane as soon as this Market went up 63 a half% winning chance Brisbane Neil gets named out of the team is it a big impact like Lynch absolutely not the market doesn’t fall into midfielders like it does the big big forwards it only change very marginally

So what I’m telling to the footy fans out there if you’re looking for your tips your ins your outs all those kinds of things the big forwards the ones going to have the most impact on winning probability Lee and Jimmy in terms of big forwards at the moment who’s the

Best oh I’m going to have to go Jesse Hogan my boy we just highlight him he’s got 10 goals after well two rounds but after round one what about your I stick with Charlie the Coleman medalist currently K yeah absolutely so you got KERO and you got Hogan which is a good

One Jimmy really like the way you’re thinking because we actually have an all Australian Market so they’re not going to win the Brand L we know it’s a midfielders Market absolutely is kerno is the shortest in it Le 100 to1 outrageous is it when you think about it player contract markets understand their

Value we know the betting markets understand their value we just need the umpires now to understand their value and then we can get involved with the brown L Jesse Hogan all Australian $4 he’s going to get plenty of chances the way those Giants are playing at the

Moment really uh pushing the the footy quickly he might be the one in the oldest train Market it’s an early look at that love that thanks Jules we’ll speak to you next week thanks boys and Jimmy Lee fantastic see you next week as well on the footy furnace on Monday

Night footy classifi on at 10: it’s on Wednesday night as well and we’re back here on Sunday night for footy furnace we’ll see you Then what are you really gambling with for free confidential support call the number on the screen or visit the website

  1. Shows how scripted these kind of shows are. Its good leigh actually changed his mind and had an opinion. That suit hack can quit and we can let the men talk about footy.

  2. Jesus this show is bad. Starting with the Host. Not allowing Leight to just talk off the hip is wrong, and Bartel is on about 5 shows already… I know too much of his opinion. Sponsored by crown…erh.

  3. Righto Jimmy stop the dribble Americanism language. Seriously whatโ€™s wrong with saying Utility instead of Swingman. Now 500? ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‘Š

  4. Been saying it for 3 years, swans without buddy getting in the way turn into a very strong team.
Weird to see lions and pies lose 2 relatively easy games

  5. Channel 9 coming up with another show for the AFL putting it ahead of channel 7 despite being the broadcaster. Just showing how much of a dud deal they are.

  6. Why post those entire show when you only post clips of the good shows, stop trying to get as many views as possible.

  7. I donโ€™t like how the same people are like on 5 different shows we know what theyโ€™re about. Love seeing Leigh tho

  8. Ahhh Tom Morris the homophobe racist how is he back after the audio of him was heard by the world, disgraceful channel 9

  9. Twilight or night grand final tony serprano remember when is the worst form of conversation remember when the mcg had no lights or TV or entertai.ent๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  10. Why can't players defend the opposition man when the ball has surpassed the chain. If your role has finished, find your opposition player. Don't get caught big time from a turnover

  11. Why don't scientists just grab the hair-growing gene from Jimmy, replicate it and end baldness forever? … I've never been so impressed with one man's ability to bush out facially while you watch him ๐Ÿ’ฏโค

  12. This show reminds me of AFL X and aside from Leigh is destined to end up in the same place AFL hall of shame. Despite its boring host it still rates streets ahead of 7's Talking Footy which is dead man walking. Needs a weekly guest spot with a footy character of the past perhaps just to break it up a bit.
