all he has to do is wait one season and hes free to sign with anybody .
perhaps an american team with nobody ahead of him ?
then he could get a 2 year deal and an 8 x 9 after because hes top pair prospect . with no hinderance in his way ?
if i was him i would do that .
option 3 is the habs trading him and his loveley numbers to another team with a pick for a top 6 or someone better than savard or kovi to extend the development of reinbacker and mailloux . because he is 160 lbs soaking et and 5 10 . dont think many teams win with one of those top 4 . pp specialist ? sounds weird so no thank you very much

I was at the game last night and it was amazing! To the people who think it was Mathesons fault, you’re wrong. Caufield and Matheson we’re all the way into the Bruins zone and Suzuki was still going around Monty when he realized he had to catch up to the play. The Bruins had an easy 3vs2 at that point and rushed alone after taking the puck from Matheson making it a 2vs1 against Suzuki. Great game for the tank, should have lost before the OT during the 4 mins penalty anyways 😂
Is it worth giving up a year of ELC for 2 games played?
Hutson needs to put on weight, he suggests (reading between the lines) in interviews that he thinks he doesn't need to put on weight/muscle. If they put him in Mtl at the end of the season, burn off his first ELC year, then Hughes needs his head examined. He'll get crushed, NCAA to NHL at his size, c'mon really? He needs a summer of muscle building and at least a year in the AHL. At that time, they evaluate him and all the other young Dman and decide who stays, who goes, who stays in the AHL as fill-ins for emergency call ups… This also depends on contract slots available, some herd thinning might be required sooner. He's not the greatest backwards skater either. To be honest, in the rookie tournament last summer, I kinda saw a puck hog that didn't create any real high danger scoring chances. At the same time it's players not used to each other and line-mates need to help create their space to make a play available for him to see and make a quick decision to create the opportunity. I don't want to sound like I'm just crapping on him, just what I see as realistic, practical and how I see it.
As for the game vs Boston, Matheson should have been the one scratched. Caught out of position, bad passing choices, fumbles, trying to be a one man show….everyone fumbles pushing their limits, part of how skill is increased but at Matheson's age and level more of a solid performance is expected. I disagree that he's their best defenseman, he gets points but at the expense of goal differential/defense. Will Hutson be the same? Matheson makes good defensive plays too, not saying he's a total wash-out just some people overrate him.
Suzuki: puck goes in passed Boston's goal line, he and the Boston player goes for the puck and Suzuki can get there first but instead of going in for a reverse hit and battle for the puck he backs off, lets the Boston defender have the puck. The line creates no forecheck whatsoever, Boston player passes the puck and they break out of the zone freely. 0% chance of getting the puck and creating a scoring chance. Even Caufield would have been more aggressive than that, seen him forcing a quick less that ideal passes for a turnover chance. Caufield's overall game, forechecking according to his size, play with and without the puck and playmaking is improving. I suppose that's one way not to risk injury, just back off. They say Suzuki chooses when to not hustle skating-wise to conserve energy for amount and length of shifts yet plays average minutes compared to other teams top lines. I've called him "lazy-legs" but I see the point, I guess. Just sometimes a little too much.
All in all, they played a decent game against a better team and stayed in it score-wise. Had Matheson made better passing choices, they might have had a few more scoring chances that might of made the difference.
That's how I see it but don't claim to be any sort of analyst. LOL
I think Hughes will maneuver a way to get another forward in the line up next season and with Dach back (hope he can stay healthy, play less vulnerable to injury) have a more competitive team next season. With a decent second line, you play more in the offensive end…the other team can't score in their own end. They've kept themselves in games against good teams this season, the right addition(s) tips the scales in their favor next season. The young D have this much more experience too. Penalty kill has improved. Defensively, as a 5 man unit, some players are too passive. A little more aggression/pressure forcing quicker and less clean passes might prevent so many shot attempts against…force mistakes.
By the length of this comment, I have too much time on my hands, too much to say without the expertise to warrant it. LOL
In a nutshell, I think the team and coaching staff are improving more than the season record suggests.
Would nine games burn one year of his contract? Will they bring him closer to RFA status?
