Rickie Fowler: How To Hit A Flop Shot | TaylorMade Golf

Rickie Fowler has one of the sauciest short games on Tour and in this video, he takes you through how he sets up and hits a flop shot to a short sided pin. He goes through how he positions the ball in his stance, how he grips the club and sets it up behind the ball, as well as his swing thoughts for how to pop that ball up and land it soft exactly how you’d want.

Hey what’s up everyone uh Ricky here another tough situation let’s just imagine there was a bunker cuz here you could bump it run it do whatever you want but short-sided flop shot uh I do have a little bit of a slight up slope so that’s helping me biggest thing on uh

Flop shot one obviously face has to be open but weight’s going to stay pretty consistent um and primarily left side face open I like to make sure I have a weak grip this kind of goes back to some some bunker techniques and how the face and bounce operate

But ball left weight’s going to stay towards that left side I like to feel the face kind of roll open or whatever you want to think of forearms but get that face open and then I I hold it so that the face like I said big thing is staying open exposing

Bounce and I’ll like to try and feel like that club head passes so obviously a lot going on there left side roll it open and let her go so that’ll work like I said imaginary bunker right here that wouldn’t exactly be the play but to be able to have that

In the bag is something that comes in handy when you get in the situation where you need it

  1. Would've been nice to show Rickie in a position where it would make sense to flop it, like over a bunker with not a lot of green to work with lol.
He is short sided here, but for me in this position its a bump and run every day of the week. I'd rather be 12 feet past the hole on a bad bump and run, then be in someones yard after blading a flop.

  2. I think something a lot of people forget while hitting flops is that you still move through the ball. It makes it much easier than just standing still, flipping your wrists at it and praying. Rickie does this really well with his wedges!
