Roundtable: Are old PGA Tour stars being outshined? | Golf Today | Golf Channel https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1

OUR COLLEAGUES, REX HOGGARD AND JOHNSON WAGNER. >> WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE IDEA THERE’S THIS PERCEPTION THAT PROFESSIONAL GOLF HASN’T BEEN AS EXCITING BECAUSE THE BIG NAMES HAVEN’T SHOWN UP. WHAT’S YOUR TAKEAWAY THUS FAR FOR THIS SEASON? >> YOU SAID IT THE DEPTH OF THE

PGA TOUR IS INCREDIBLE. YOU’RE SEEING IT WITH GUYS LIKE GRAYSON MURRAY WHO WON TWICE ON THE KORN FERRY TOUR LAST YEAR BEFORE GETTING BACK TO THE WINNERS CIRCLE. I’M IN MEXICO GETTING READY FOR THE MEXICAN OPEN. THIS IS A WEEK IT’S NOT LIKELY A

SUPERSTAR TO TAKE HOME THE TROPHY WE HAVE TONY FINAU AND A COUPLE OF EUROPEAN NAMES THAT ARE THE BIG NAMES BUT I LOOK AT VINCENT NORMAN, WON THE BARBESOL CHAMPIONSHIP AND I THINK IT’S SOMEONE LIKE THAT THAT WINS. LET’S NOT FORGET, VIKTOR

HOVLAND’S FIRST VICTORY ON THE PGA TOUR WAS THE PUERTO RICAN OPEN A FEW YEARS BACK AND NOW HE’S WINNING THE FEDEXCUP. THESE GUYS ARE SUPERSTARS BECAUSE THEY CUT THEIR TEETH AT SMALLER EVENTS. >> REX, DO YOU AGREE WITH THAT? IS THIS A CASE WATCHING PLAYERS

ON THE ASSENT OR IS SOMETHING MISSING WITHOUT HAVING A STAR ASSERT THEMSELVES? >> I THINK JOHNSON MAKES A GOOD POINT. YOU DON’T START OUT BEING A STAR OUT OF COLLEGE, YOU HAVE TO EARN THAT RIGHT. IF YOU DON’T GIVE THAT A AVENUE

YOU NEVER MAKE IT TO STAR THE STATUS. I GO BACK TO THE IDEA THAT YOU HAD A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING SO FAR THIS SEASON. IF YOU DON’T LIKE REDEMPTION STORIES I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU COULDN’T ROOT FOR CHRIS KIRK AND GRAYSON MURRAY.

ALL OF THESE STORIES ARE REALLY, REALLY GOOD IF YOU’RE A GOLF FAN. BUT THE OTHER SIDE IS WHAT THE TOUR IS TRYING TO — THE PRODUCT THEY’RE TRYING TO PROVIDE, WHICH IS THE STARS COME OUT AND SHINE THE BRIGHTEST WHEN YOU GIVE THEM THIS OPPORTUNITY.

JUST ONE PLAYER HAS WON THAT WAS IN THE TOP TEN, THAT’S WYNDHAM CLARK. I DON’T KNOW IF THAT’S THE MODEL THE TOUR WAS LOOKING FOR WHEN THEY CAME UP WITH THE SIGNATURE EVENT MODEL. >> TALKING ABOUT STARS AT THE GENESIS INVITATIONAL WE WERE

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DUAL PROSPECT OF HAVING TIGER WOODS NOT ONLY ON THE GROUNDS BUT ALSO NOT AS JUST THE HOST BUT AS A COMPETITOR AS WELL. THAT WAS BROUGHT TO A CONCLUSION WHEN HE WAS FORCED TO WITHDRAW ON FRIDAY AFTER BEING STRICKEN WITH THE FLU.

HOW MUCH DID THAT LET THE AIR OUT OF THE BALLOON AND COULD WE DRAW ANY KIND OF CONCLUSIONS FROM OUR BRIEF WINDOW OF THE 2024 TIGER WOODS? >> IT WAS PALPABLE. I WAS WALKING FOR GOLF CHANNEL LAST WEEK, HAD THE PLEASURE OF

WALKING WITH TIGER ON THURSDAY AND HIS GROUP. AND THE VIBE WAS INCREDIBLE, ELECTRIC. I WAS A COUPLE OF GROUPS IN FRONT OF HIM ON FRIDAY WHEN IT HAPPENED. I WAS WALKING WITH RORY. AS SOON AS IT HAPPENED I COULD HEAR OVER HEADSETS HE WAS OUT.

BUT THE CROWDS DISPERSED. IT WAS DEFLATING ON THAT FRIDAY AFTERNOON. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY I THOUGHT WOULD HAVE LESS GALLERY. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY WAS ELECTRIC AT RIVERA. THE EVENT OBVIOUSLY WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER WITH TIGER THERE BUT STILL AMAZING WITH THE STARS WE HAD PLANNED.

>> REX, MOVING ON TO THIS WEEK AND PLAYING OFF THIS IDEA OF LAST WEEK WAS KIND OF THE STARS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT IN HOLLYWOOD AND DIDN’T REALLY PERFORM IN THE WAY WE EXPECTED, NOW THIS WEEK JOHNSON MENTIONED, TONY FINAU IS SORT OF THE BRAND

NAME IN THE FIELD THIS WEEK IN MEXICO. IS THIS THE HAR BINGER OF A TOURNAMENT THAT COULD BE IN DANGER IF THEY LOOK AT THE SIGNATURE EVENTS AND BUILDING AROUND THE BIGGEST STARS IN THE GAME, THAT SOMEHOW THERE WILL

CEASE TO BE A PLACE FOR THINGS LIKE THE MEXICO OPEN OR THE EVENTS IN THE FALL SERIES. >> IT’S CERTAINLY A LITMUS TEST OF WHAT THE PGA TOUR IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE. YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE EBB AND FLOW BASED ON THE NEW SCHEDULE, EV

EVENTS BETWEEN THE SIGNATURE EVENTS THAT PLAYERS WILL BE PLAYING TO GET INTO THE SIGNATURE EVENTS, BUT I’M NOT SURE IT’S GOING TO RESONATE WITH THE FANS. IF IT DOESN’T, YOU HAVE TO ASK WHERE ARE THESE EVENTS LIKE THE MEXICO OPEN, WHERE ARE THEY

GOING TO END UP? WHAT’S THEIR DRAW. I GO BACK TO PGA NATIONAL, IT WAS A FANTASTIC FINISH. IF YOU CONTINUE TO HAVE THOSE MICRO STORY LINES IN BETWEEN THE SIGNATURE EVENTS I THINK THERE IS A PLACE FOR THEM IN THE GAME ON THE PGA TOUR.

BUT THAT REMAINS TO BE SEEN. >> REX, I HAVE TO COME IN HERE. I AGREE WITH YOU. BUT THESE EVENTS ARE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. THE COMMUNITIES THAT ARE INVOLVED ARE BIG AND I JUST THINK THAT THERE’S GOING TO BE A PLACE. YOU LOOK AT A GUY LIKE RODNEY

SHELTON THIS WEEK, HE DID PLAY AT THE PHOENIX OPEN A FEW WEEKS AGO BUT A LOT OF PLAYERS IN THE FIELD HAVEN’T TOUCHED THE GROUND FOR THREE WEEKS, BEING ON PEBBLE BEACH, WM PHOENIX OPEN AND RIVERA. YOU HAVE GUYS LIKE HARRISON ENDCOTT WHO GOT HIS CARD BACK

THROUGH Q SCHOOL. WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE GOING FORWARD I HAVE IDEAS BUT THERE HAS TO BE EVENTS LIKE THIS, THE KORN FERRY TOUR TO FEED UP TO THE UPPER ECHELON GOING FORWARD. >>> WE TALK ABOUT WHAT THE TOP PLAYERS WANT. BUT A LOT OF SPONSORS HAVE A

LOCALIZED AGENDA OR SEPARATE AGENDAS FROM TOURNAMENT TO TOURNAMENT AND THE RANK AND FILE OBVIOUSLY WANT TO KEEP JOBS. ARE THOSE CONCERNS THAT SEEM TO HAVE BEEN ERASED HERE OF WHAT THE SPONSORS WANT TO GET OUT OF A WEEK OR WHAT THE RANK AND TOUR

FILE MEMBERS NEED TO GET? >> I THINK FOR SPONSORS SPECIFICALLY I KNOW THE RSM CLASSIC NOT A GREAT DAY. I THINK THEY LOVE THE TOURNAMENT, THEY BRING IN THE CLIENTS, THE HOSPITALITY, THE FACT THEY HAVE PRO-AMS ALL WEEK WHERE THE CUSTOMERS CAN PLAY

WITH THE BEST GOLF ERS IN THE WORLD IT DEPENDS ON WHAT THE SPONSOR IS LOOKING TO GET OUT OF IT. LOOK AT THE CHAMPIONS TOUR. THEY — THAT TOUR IS AROUND BECAUSE OF HOW GOOD THE PROFESSIONALS ARE DEALING WITH PRO-AM GUESTS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

SO I THINK — I THINK IT’S A BIG ASK FOR THESE SPONSORS RIGHT NOW TO BE FORKING OVER THE KIND OF DOLLARS THEY ARE FOR SIGNATURE EVENTS. THERE’S A LOT OF GREAT STUFF THE PGA TOUR DOES THAT DOESN’T REVOLVE AROUND THE STARS. >> IT SPEAKS TO THE CHARITABLE

ASPECT BECAUSE THAT’S IMPORTANT TO THE SPONSORS. I BRING IT UP IN PARTICULAR BECAUSE YOU MENTIONED RSM AND HOW UNIQUE THAT EVENT IS FOR THEM. YES, A MAJOR SUPPORTING EVENT THAT SURROUNDS IT BUT IT’S ONLY ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE IT

SPECIAL TO THAT ENTITY, THE RSM. I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT WORLD NUMBER ONE, SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER. HE OBVIOUSLY CONTINUES TO AMAZE WITH HIS BALL STRIKING POWERS. BUT HIS PUTTING CONTINUES TO CAUSE MANY TIMES MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS, AT LEAST BY A RELATIVE COMPARISON.

WHAT ARE YOU SEEING? >> WELL, I WAS WITH HIM THURSDAY AFTER I LEFT TIGER’S GROUP I WENT TO SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER’S GROUP AND CAUGHT HIM ON THE 11th HOLE, FRONT OF THE GREEN, PAR 5 RIVERA, BACK PIN, BEAUTIFUL LAG PUTT TO 4 FEET, MISSES IT.

IT’S SO SHOCKING I SAW HIM GET FRUSTRATED, WALKED TO THE 12th TEE WHILE HIS OTHER PLAYING PARTNERS WERE PUTTING OUT. HE WAS MUTTERING TO HIMSELF AND HE TOOK HIS BALL AND CHUCKED IT UP THE HILLSIDE INTO SOMEBODY’S BACKYARD AND I SAW IT AGAIN

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, PUTTER TOSSES TO THE BAG. SO IT’S STARTING TO WEAR HIM DOWN. THE WEST COAST DOES THAT TO MOST PLAYERS. I REMEMBER BACK IN 2008 I SWITCHED TO A BELLY PUTTER ON THE WEST COAST. THE WEST COAST CAN REALLY BRING

YOU DOWN PUTTING ON POA ANNUA GREEN BUT ONCE WE SEE SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER IN FLORIDA PUTTING ON FRIENDLIE FRIENDLIER SURFACES THAT’S WHERE I’LL NOTICE. >> JORDAN SPIETH HAD AN INRESTING WEEK IN L.A., DISQUALIFIED FOR SIGNING AN INCORRECT SCORE CARD. MATT THINKS THE RULE NEEDS TO BE CHANGED.

WHERE ARE YOU ON THIS? IS THIS RULE GOOD ENOUGH THEY SHOULD ATTEST THEIR SCORE OR A CLERICAL ERROR THAT’S OUTDATED IN THE MODERN GAME? >> I THINK IT’S A SAFE ASSUMPTION THAT ANYONE THAT ARGUES WITH YOU IS WRONG? >> I’M GLAD YOU RECOGNIZED THAT FACT.

>> I DON’T THINK YOU’RE GOING TO LIKE MY OPINION ON THIS EITHER. WE TALKED ABOUT IT ON THE PODCAST. I THINK ON THE PGA TOUR, IN 2024, WHEN YOU HAVE CAMERAS ON EVERY SINGLE PLAYER IN THE FIELD, SHOT LINK, WALKING SCORES. I THINK IT’S A CLERICAL ERROR,

MAYBE THERE’S A PENALTY, IF JORDAN SPIETH WALKS OUT SIGNING A WRONG SCORE CARD ADD A STROKE OR TWO BUT A DQ SEEMS SO DRAC DRACONIAN. EVERYONE KNEW WHAT HE SHOT. HE WAS NOT TRYING TO CIRCUMVENT THE SCORING PROCESS AT ALL. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE RULES I’LL

GIVE THE ANA AND THE USGA A MONSOON OF CREDIT THEY’VE TRIED TO UPDATE THE RULES OVER THE YEARS. I’D LOVE TO SEE THIS ONE UPDATED. >> REX, I AGREE WITH PART OF THAT. I SEE THAT PART OF THE STORY. BUT IT A ONE OF THOSE THINGS.

MY SON PLAYS JUNIOR GOLF NOW THEY MAKE HIM KEEP SCORE ON A TELEPHONE. IT’S RIDICULOUS. SOMETHING ABOUT WRITING YOUR SCORE DOWN. I HAVE BACKGROUND INFORMATION HERE. APPARENTLY TOM KIM HADN’T WRITTEN A SINGLE SCORE DOWN ON THE CARD AND SO, HE’S IN THE

SCORING TENT, JORDAN SPIETH WAS SICK AS A DOG THAT DAY, CHILLS, FEVER, COMES IN AFTER MAKING DOUBLE BOGEY ON THE LAST HOLE, RIPS OFF HIS TEAR STRIP IT’S ON HIS TEAR STRIP, JORDAN SIGNS IT, WALKS OUT, SAID TO THE GUY, ARE WE GOOD, THE SCORING OFFICIAL

SAID, YES. I DON’T THINK JORDAN SHOULD HAVE — I DON’T THINK HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISQUALIFIED BUT THE PGA TOUR, PLAYING HIGH LEVEL GOLF, THE SCORING SYSTEM IS FINE, RIGHT WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE. >> SO I CAN JUMP IN AND DEFEND

MYSELF, NOTWITHSTANDING HIS LEADING QUESTION. I DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH PLAYERS KEEPING OTHER’S SCORES. YOU KEEP MINE, I KEEP YOURS. I’M SAYING, WITH THE TECHNOLOGY WE HAVE, BEFORE THE PLAYER WALKS OUT THE DOOR AND GETS A DQ

  1. i love the way PGA is right now, please dont give in to liv please dont let them dictate PGA lets stay the way it is

  2. F the LIV tour. I am tired of hearing those who left the PGA cry about how LIV isn't the same. Guess the money wasn't all that worth it now, was it?

  3. This is a creative way to spin the story, talking about depth of talent. I think this explanation is result of statistical bias. The "superstars" have been dog crap this season, that's why their getting beat. Its not depth of field, its the fact that someone has to win the tournament obviously. If a big name isn't winning it, because they're all struggling, then by default a "no namer" is going to end up winning. If the superstars were playing up to their potentials, Nick Taylor wouldn't be winning. Sam Burns (arguably a superstar) in the American Express is a prime example of what I'm talking about. He lost it because of an error. If he wins, like the superstar is expected, we aren't having this conversation.

Ultimately to me its more important to answer why our stars of the PGA tour are sucking this year.

  4. American PGA tour stars have been slumping (underperforming) for the past year and a half or more now. it's just becoming more obvious. Y2K Tiger would have wiped the floor with this generation.

  5. For people who play golf and follow golf the PGA Tour is in a good place. However, if the goal is to grow and attract the luke warm casual golf / sports fans the PGA Tour falls short of the Must Watch Entertainment Value. The average luke warm golf / sports fan wants to watch and follow players that are Interesting with character (Good or Bad) and with Personality. LIVGolf took all of those players. Rahm, Phil, Bryson, Koepka, Sergio, DJ and yes even Pat Perez. The weekend that the WM tournament was being held I found myself tuning more to the LIVGolf Las Vegas Tournament than the WMT. It was awesome to watch Rahm, Bryson, DJ & Koepka go at it! I can honestly say that I enjoy both but for different reasons.

  6. I find it odd all of a sudden now that Rahm is not eligible for Ryder Cub Rory wants everyone together ! That’s a true waffle and nobody brings it up !

  7. The bottom line is that the PGA Tour needs to continue to look at the bigger picture and utilize those small non-signature event tournaments as little pieces to help enhance the life changing storylines that the fans want to hear and know about.

  8. The new young talent on the Tour right now has made all the players who went to LIV completely irrelevant. The golf has been soooo good.

  9. I think this is why LIV is so powerful. You see, they will offer between $100M to $200M to each Major winner from now on, that way they will always have the top stars. With their crappy ratings, they just have to come up with $3B or so per year, and keep this losing project going forever on oil sales. That's why I don't feel sorry for anybody in professional golf; are you kidding me? There's billions being pumped into the sport for virtually no merit on the course whatsoever. I wish someone would come into my construction business and offer me 10x just to go pound nails in their walls.

  10. The fact they're even discussing this reveals there's a sense of panic surrounding PGA TOUR competitions.

  11. There’s obviously more opportunity for non superstars to win each week with such depleted fields as so many top players are banned from entering.

  12. I was an advocate for the PGA, even have a cousin on Tour BUT then I watched LIV. PGA has turned boring…. My opinion.

  13. Definitely do a review on the Birdie Ball mats – just got the turf putting mat for Simulators and love it. Great review!

  14. I dont watch football to watch average players having good days. I watch to see the top athletes in the world do things others can't. I don't watch the PGA to watch a college junior have a good day and win a tournament. I watch to see the stars hit shots that leave me in awe or put up numbers that are unheard of. That only happens on LIV now. The PGA stars aren't performing like stars. They are getting beat by college and double A players.

  15. LIV should buy the Euro tour (and save it) and get the World tour happening….even invite PGAT members….Sign up Rory and Make Slumbers world tour commish…PGAT will do nothing..
