Solskjaer Reveals All On Haaland, Ronaldo & United Exit | Stick to Football EP 22

You said that you knew at half time was that through something that had been said to you previously or was it just a feeling it was just a feeling overwhelming yeah you get there the players some of them sto stopped running stopped believing that’s maybe the biggest word they didn’t believe that

And didn’t care maybe and it’s just one of them that there’s no point for me trying to get this changed just that you know it was come to a point we’d lost to Liverpool 5 n and lost the city 2-0 at home in two games and in between they would beat

Tottenham 3-0 away but those two home games is like I always looked at them and said we need to be man united try to be man united don’t defend don’t be counterattacking just let the players fit or go out there go toe-to-toe with them cuz if not there’s

No point being at man united you’ve got to at some point you need to take that can we take the next step and now we weren’t ready just not good enough but do you feel going to to to was in hindsight you’re saying going T to tour

More pressure to beat teams at home did you feel like you had to to be the aggressor yeah at United you have a you have a responsibility as well for the fans to to enjoy the game you don’t don’t just go and get a result right uh

And I felt we’ve uh but isn’t it strange sorry is it strange that we sit here and we go yeah I’m I’m I’m comforable playing the counter attack away from home but I still think the mindset should be even if you’re a big Club I don’t care if it’s Real Madrid or

Dormund or Barn Munich whoever sitting in a home why does I’m just about I’m not just about your situation but there is it’s it’s easy away from home but you should be at home as well cuz I think this idea of picking teams often playing under Counterattack if you’re not as

Good as the opposition I think there’s nothing wrong with that I appreciate there always pressure of man united to be the dominant team and have more more possession but why is it we’ll do it away from home but not so much at home and I just don’t mean your situation

You’re saying there is almost you’ve come in you’ve stabilized it you’ve you’ve moved it on you comp you’re getting results against big teams as well and so do you feel basically you couldn’t win the biggest trophies playing how you had at the start that was about stab getting Manchester United

To a certain level and you do have to change that’s not just Manchester United any team right now to compete with a city or Liverpool Arsenal right now no you you need to take the you need to dominate games you need to dominate against the big teams you need to be

Comfortable trying to beat defend Low Blocks you need to play and keep possession but you need to be able to run as well as Roy says sit in at times and dig in and that understanding or that um didn’t work in those oh there was a bad it was

A bad six weeks like the game plan kind of still feeling like you’re in control even though you haven’t got the ball and then picking your times to go do you think the lads could we we did have that feeling even two week or two weeks before Tottenham away that’s not a bad

Themselves then knew the owners uh they knew that we didn’t invest enough they asked me to be patient uh and then just take one step at a time and did you feel that they had any intentions of actually you being patient and they’re going to do

Something to help you do what you wanted to do yeah I think so and it felt like it that summer when we sign ra Rafael Jaden and Cristiano it’s like take the next step but then the team has to play that way as well so obviously the recruitment has been talked about so

Many times and when you come in you agree to because you sign a contract you agree to how they want to do it and you’re going to do it to the best of your ability I wanted to tr I try to change it gradually a little little by

Little because at times you you need to sign young players that you haven’t really really uh scouted or you haven’t got eight reports on or 20 reports on little little things people talk sorry Gary people talk about we speak about that a lot you know United recruitment

So was it more of a case when you said you signed the contract that almost they were more in charge because right now it feels as if it’s more like Eric tenh hard sitting for the last 18 months as was it how was it for you you you

Sign a deal wherever you take a job like when you when you sign up you sign up to something and of course you’ve got bosses and it wasn’t like David Gil and Sir Alex Ferguson when they two just ran the whole thing there was more departments above me that I had to go

Through to uh to get decisions uh made and I was happy enough to so would they would they present players to you and say okay we’re looking for a right winger we’re looking for a center forward you’ve got to choose one from this five or would you say to them I

Want this player the The Scouting process was very thorough and maybe too too thorough uh thorough yeah stop speak in English as well you know when you’re in Norway um and then they yeah obviously I come up with names as well when you watch players and but they’ve

Got to be really well scouted and then we sit and then I’ve got veto the scouts got veto the owner obviously who pays three we talked about that a few weeks ago about veto who has the veto so you’re talking about multiple veto right

The way up the chain so so you never I never signed a player that I didn’t want okay and the scouts never said yes to a player they didn’t want and obviously the owner or Ed uh they never signed players that they weren’t comfortable signing but Ed wouldn’t have a veto no

Ed Ed Ed didn’t Financial veto maybe but it was just the scouts and the manager well but just just specifically because I it’s a little bit of a sort of a it’s a bit mystical about what actually Manchester United structure has been over the last 10 years

Who is sat in the room when you’re signing a player who is sort of if you like who is responsible for finding the players how involved is the manager in that how’s it work the manager watches all the G all the players obviously and the there’s L multiple lists and all the

Scouts they I don’t know how many Scouts they’ve employed but there’s I don’t think there’s many players they miss having reports on so they’re all on the list basically and then they pick yeah five who are we going to sell sign obviously he will be 100 million he’s 70

He’s 50 30 20 and then it depends on the budget and it’s it’s it’s all sorts and then you meet players and then yeah I like his attitude I don’t like his attitude yes no there was a point where I think I mean I remember texting you I

Don’t know if you remember where I said you need to spend their [ __ ] money yeah yeah cuz yeah because it got to the point where I thought you weren’t getting supported and I’ve never texted anybody in football about that type of thing but I justly known when you sat

Next to you in the dress I just thought you need to spend that [ __ ] money quickly because you need some players you know what I mean we needed players yeah and to be fair spend it wisely yeah obious obviously not not as in like just you know frivolously just absolutely he

Needed to bring players in it was obvious he needed to have the right players and I I felt gradually you know being second and third in my two two full seasons I thought we had we had improved really well uh ahead of Liverpool behind City both seasons

Uh and it was about the next step are we ready for it yeah but that’s the hardest one that the hardest one when we started that season the the owners and they all agreed we got the fourth best Squad cuz Liverpool City we felt Chelsea had a

Better Squad than we had and it was Champions League again who well that was the target you were told that was a Target were you I’m 100% sure that we would have if I’d stayed That season absolutely sure because what happened after I left didn’t really improve

Things but that’s that’s you know oh sorry I was just going to say who was some players that you wanted that you didn’t get there was rumors of was Delan rice maybe yeah I I really really like him as a player we discussed him a few

Times and I think we would have done well with him in Midfield I think his legs Co covering the pitch I think he improved a lot on his playmaking as well was he available at the time all it yeah yeah obviously he would have cost some

Money but uh we we could have and should have should have gone for him the big ones only that sort of stand out for me uh just you know in terms of recruitment the big ones are Bellingham who was in the yeah was in the building

He knew what he wanted and Jude he was in the building you can’t ask for a little a lot more for a midfielder because I was there obviously as the manager Sir Alex was there Roy should have been there but you weren’t but uh Brian Robson was there and canona was

There that day when he came to the club so we all spoke to him and of course we we sold it to him uh as well as we could but he knew what he wanted x amount of minutes uh in in the first team that’s

The most mature he was 17 at the time most mature 17y old I’ve ever met in my life he he was he had plan you think bit much for a player to go to a club and have four or five people but that’s because they about level player that they

Wanted if I could if I could have put those those those Avengers together I would have done the same thing the thing is the thing is it was Co coincidental were there just by coincidence so he but he wasn’t going to sign for Man United cuz he met Canton

Would that have worked the Dynam team it was a very quick decision and we didn’t think Cristiano was available and didn’t think he was going to move when it came apparent that he was leaving Juventus obviously there was other clubs wanted him uh I was excited

So I said yes I was they asked me would you want us to try this and I said yeah because obviously we know Christiano his quality and I thought yeah he’s 37 but we’ll have to manage cuz obviously it’s the best go scorer in the world and it

Was my decision it didn’t work out for me didn’t work out for Cristiano but it was the right decision at the time I’m trying to think of when he came in did he had the season started or it just before we’ played four or five games

We were we started really well so what I’m saying is that summer you mentioned before about you felt that was the summer to make the next step I think Sancho comes in veran maybe somebody else when you buy someone so late and you’re not expected you not almost build

In the world but that wasn’t that wasn’t no one said no to be the club Captain it was just in certain games they said I don’t want to be Captain for this match but they didn’t want to say it themselves they’ve got other people coming up to me and say that what

They’re Representatives hey they represent no they’re no some other the coaches coach Jesus as you do you don’t go up to the manag to do yourself you get someone else to do it for you so that was a bit disappear no you no you don’t no we didn’t it’s it’s a different

Losing a home yeah that’s to me that’s bravery that’s where the character coming because all these players you just certainly talented we’ve seen them at the big clubs but it’s just a bit underneath that it’s that personality you know you’re talking about sort of maybe mental health problems as well as

Not just sort of mentality as a footballer I mean I’m just thinking of ourselves here obviously we do big Manchester United games you’re the manager we’re giving big opinions I mean and probably we say things and probably don’t realize the effect maybe it has on players and certainly social media I

Mean how are we are you or the dressing room of things getting picked up by we say and you think that does affect players definitely 100% you know when you obviously when you criticize players is or teams tactics or talent but when you when it goes above that it is

Because there’s so many around who watch this listen to this and then they they’re on the social media on the Twitter and all this and yeah they’re right and the if they don’t read it or hear it friends agents managers even even here you can’t even turn up here

Without agents and managers some of you I don’t know who [Applause] [Laughter] no it when it goes away from sort of tactical go about person person character if we said someone was lazy or but laziness that’s lack Li ship there’s I think they they listen and think about

It more than we than you think yeah He’s just talking about the players there but I I just remember towards the end when it started to sort of if you like go a little bit sort of South and you knew that sort of it was getting difficult there were some reports I mean there were look like sound to me like

To you got got a new job again youve got a chance next time and there’s only certain amount of times you can say you I’ll give you that game I’ll give you that game you’ve got a chance and in the end they just go sour and we had a big

Squad too many players maybe I know premier league and all this is it’s like really intense but if you have too many players they get unhappy I think it’s really interesting that because when you look at actually people go on about like Man City and the money

They spend on the squad whenever you look at s of City’s bench was a couple of players on it who were like young Lads you think who’s that you know he’s a young one coming through I think p and clpp say that is a massive problem for you having too many players definitely

Everyone’s got to believe they’ve got a chance of playing cuz he’s not he not just leaving them from the 11 you leave them out from the 18 or 20 who who are in the squad and when you sat on the Ben or in the in the stands yeah but that’s

What you need this where you talk about you know where City are where we were in 99 and people like the so-called players who weren’t playing weeking go and include yourself all the ls but they’re they’re the players that get you over the line they’re the good L train

Properly they train properly and there’s nothing wrong with there’s not wrong with getting upset and getting pissed off I get that but it’s went start down in tools and dragging the other players down but while we had it you see with city you’ll see with Liverpool we saw

The weekend it’s these guys in the background who haven’t been playing regular you going you’re the ones who are probably going to get us the trophy at the end of it you did all and that’s where I it’s it was all right for us Gary in a sense you know when you’re

Playing week in week out I obviously used to keep an eye on the who wen’t playing regular and I go and I obviously at United I give credit to the kind of so-called Squad players more than the starting 11 every cuz they’re the ones come the end of the season but of

Suspensions obviously including myself injuries and the lads would do and you get your reward you got yours Ali if you’re a good player and you train properly and know it’s easier said than done they’re ready for it they’re ready you some Lads come on and they go and it

Takes them a month or two to get up the speed you innocense have down tools I’ve had that LE lusin away that’s the next time we play them couple of years later not this semi-final right Diego fall so rude rude was going to be suspended in

The league so obviously I was in first sub I felt right and then the gaffer had to make a change and he put Diego fallan on instead of me and I was I lost it I didn’t yeah big time never seen that one anyway so the gaffer asks me after the

Game so cuz you you seem very upset yeah so obviously I went went to his office the day after asked why why do you think you probably think he’s better than me no no no rude is suspended for two or three games I know you’re going to play

Scored more goals than me in my first season so stopped me from getting any any top scorer award uh no Canton I was perfect when I was young cuz I had more legs later on I felt play with rude was nice wow rude’s the best finisher I’ve

Played with by a mile clean yeah he could score a goal absolutely yeah just just going back one step to the management side of it you said about before about sort of you still obviously want to go back into it but what would be the sort of things that you you said

About obviously taking it on my terms but what do you think at United specifically thought you may have done wrong what would you change about you did at United cuz you’re never going to be able to dictate a club like Manchester United I no I’ve I’ve thought a lot about this

Obviously and as I said here before the right thing was to sign Cristiano but if I think it would have turned out better maybe for Cristiano and for us if he hadn’t signed well that that’s the headline but online there we go yeah Ser seriously it was the right decision to make it

To beir I found myself in a I you know we are probably roided as well at times a really sort of difficult position on television around that time you know that where you know I we were never ever going to stick the knife into you it’s never going to happen and also

Cristiano’s a player for United that we respect enormously one of the greatest players of all time but when I saw him obviously on the bench sort of like you know doing things to the camera I felt that and obviously after the Everton game when you left him out that first

Time and you remember you walked off I felt that was letting you down cuz he was next teammate of yours that’s why I felt a little bit sort of you cuz he’s a great player I mean he’s immovable as an object in terms of what he’s achieved

And I thought he should have been with you as your ally to sort of drive that dressing room forward and you you know what I mean in term and obviously I remember the times we had as players in that dressing room that’s where I felt sort of a conflict in terms of thinking

Come on Cristiano that you’re here now to sort of be that leader in the dress you are the man you know what I mean so that that’s where that’s where we found ourselves don’t if you know right at time we had a lot of arguments at the

Time course we did yeah a lot of debate part part of the of signing him you got Mason and Marcus martial learn off Cristiano he’s the best the most disciplined he’s been the best player in the world and you think he’s going to help them and when

Cristiano says to me start me three put me on the bench on in one in four yeah and but he’s so passionate so whenever you leave him out he’s like that’s your expectation you know when you talk about him getting upset but that just shows all

It wasn’t the upset right it was the public upset it was like inside inside the dress room no problem but just you know the impact he’s not he’s he’s got his flaws like everybody else did you want him to be like what Ronaldo was doing at the time I got it why people

Were criticizing him and was it brenford and his Boot and he [ __ ] I’m not sitting there going you’re getting a thumbs up from me for that behavior but that’s part of his that that’s a flaw he’s got in his game how can it be right he know

He’s he’s told I’m saying the manager told him you’re going to he said I want three and then one and then he does it and then he gives him the faces wasn’t even just a manag just he he said that to you Cristiano to me I can’t really

Remember too many problems as in was that the Everton yeah he he walked straight off after he came on there was more problems after I’d left cuz I think oh yeah yeah Cristiano and I had a good relationship and there there’s Lads of respect there so I think he behaved

Really well in in his disappointments when I when I was there I I think so when you left that remember I think he was down at Chelsea remember Mel took he left he was he was few and we lag you all day about what makes these unbelievable great players that’s why

They play 60 70 80 games a season is because they’re [ __ ] passionate did he say stuff in the dressing room to get yeah no Cristiano was he was trying to be a leader in there and obviously it’s oh you see you Bruno Fernandez was amazing one when he first come

Unbelievable for you he’s now captain of Manchester United did you think of him as being sort of like the captain of Manchester United when you were there he’s got Captain uh personalities and qualities he knows I’ve told him he’s too passionate at times he loses a

Little bit of that control I loved Harry as a captain he was the leader in that group for me when I was there what’ you make of what’s happened to him since obviously Captain’s been stripped off him way the way he’s handled himself Top Class just shows the charact for me what

I want in players they dig in don’t jump off ship at first opportunities stay in there and do the best you can he was playing well in that first season in half few two season he played well that first when he came in it was different

Class came in and it compared when the f I still remember the first training session he looks like a man Mountain compared to the others and he and gradually obviously but no histic people talk about McGuire a lot maybe because obviously he’s English and the money

Piding me but no one’s ever sat and criticized his no i’ say about the captain he’s been taken off it but even people say like he’s he’s a great but the Chism his performances nobody’s ever sat there and he’s lost the captaincy and he wasn’t a

Regular and his like just part of his game that he he needs to do better on I think that was the what was the turning point for Harry do you think in terms of all from what you you saw was that summer summer in inent in holiday in

Mikonos or whatever it was that’s not an easy had a bigger impact on him I think he had a great impact on I always felt that situation and then Ronaldo coming in and almost being this huge figure and Harry as you said he was almost like the

Leader of this team that was growing and then bump Ronaldo come and I always think those two situations he found it very difficult mentally I think and and you have to say I think you know as you said he done well when he first came in that is

Probably a slight fla because when you’re out at Manchester United the expectation mentally to deal with poor performance and crit and you’ve got to overcome that I just I think it I don’t think he’s ever recovered but have you ever been to mckas it’s expensive is itel the hotel prices what about Jaden

Sanchez look at Jayden Sanchez he’s obviously gone now he’s he’s at Dortmund on loan and why do you think that didn’t work out for him the kind of player he is and I didn’t really have enough or long enough with jayen to to analyze him

That way he was unlucky cuz he’d been on holiday he signed for us he went on holiday come back with a infected air and he had he stayed in hospital for a week or so and so he was way low on on Fitness when he started in the middle of

This like yeah the season started and it never got going when I was there so and obviously his him Marcus they they prefer the wide left more than the wide right so no I never got him go going um it was it was Obsession for about 18 months of chasing Jaden Sancho though

Wasn’t it was like it was the longest transfer Saga in the world I suspect then that means that everybody was bought into that this is the right play we desperately need this lad yeah that was that was everyone was uh in alignment that he’s the one obviously

You need to play him in his like in the way that he needs to play with his link up play and he’s not a runner in behind Jaden he is more of a linkup player play run have it back because he’s creative he’s he’s got a great brain on him and just didn’t

Work just coming away from the sort of Manchester United managerial stuff going back to Man United play 25 years ago y probably a few months away from it you’re scoring probably the goal that is probably the greatest single moment in Manchester United’s history yeah and probably the most memorable moment in

Manchester United’s history how do you sort of Look Back upon that 25 years sort of and sort of how that moment sits with you now what you think about that moment when you play you don’t think about all this do you you don’t you just

You score a goal you do your role and after that’s when you realize how big it was for the club and everyone saying you gave me the best night of my life and blah blah blah just went on tour or not on tour did a couple of q&as in uh in

India with two uh two Lads from Jake and Steven two man united fans just charity yeah [Applause] yeah not everyone gives me food I need to pay for the food as so but they just so he was born nine months after Jake so obviously um Steven says that I’m half

Part of uh him being alive being alive that night was fantastic and it was just so important for everyone connected to man united for me when Teddy scored I was thinking than [ __ ] I’m going to play 30 minutes in a Champions League final extra time and

Then you we we get the winner so never I I was always about developing and getting better I think I hope you hope you agree I I did like to train improve improve so I thought I’m I’m going to improve by playing extra minutes when I scored that goal obviously that didn’t

Happen and I knew I wasn’t going to be a better player from it but my all the media exposure just ballooned somewhere that you um you read that you had a feeling for that you had a feeling something was going to happen for you that night you know you know when you
