Why aren’t the big names winning on the PGA Tour? | Golf Central | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1

Golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the Paradigm AI smoke woods and irons from Callaway Signature Events thus far Chris Kirk won the opener on Maui at the century Windam Clark 18t Pebble Beach Pro Saturday 60 that became the final round due to bad weather uh

And then Hideki at the Genesis the remaining for the RBC Heritage right after the Masters Wells Fargo Memorial and then after the US Open it is The Travelers this week’s field is headlined by world number one Scotty Sheffer excellent track record here he won in

2022 also with a T4 and a T15 in those last three starts sandwich sandwiched around that Victory and Scotty Sport and the beard this week world number two Rory maroy he won the API in 2018 finished runner up a year ago in fact he

Was tied for the lead but Bogi 14 and 15 with Kurt kyama winning so they’re at the head of a strong field nine of the top 10 22 of the top 25 in the latest world rankings four past champions including Jason day who won here in 2016

How about 16 major winners and then all nine title winners on the PGA tour this season a lot of discussion it has been the season of the long shots Chris Kirk and Grayson Murray Nick Dunlap winning as an amateur even matama was 80 to1 the shortest odds Jake Napp

At 40 to1 winning Mexico with a field that frankly was lacking weight by comparison in 2023 we had one winner in the first nine events at 1021 or higher odds versus six this year there were six winners in 2023 inside the top 50 in the world rankings just won this year wam

Clark was 10th when he won at Pebble Beach the competition is obviously very stiff I mean there’s no question about it we’ve had a quite a few first-time winners on tour this year you’ve got some tene guys that are contending week in week out um you know the official

World Golf Ranking is what it is right now um but I also think that the competition that we have is is pretty stiff I mean you know it’s really good to see guys like Nick especially come up and it just shows you the the golf climate that

We’re in with kids in college coming up and playing that great um but you know I I think that when you look at over the last few years and seeing the first time winners and playing as well as they have I think that’s something that I’m more excited

About because on any given week you can see someone just pop off a win yeah I think it’s harder to win um out here than it ever has I think guys play more aggressively and the scores as you can see are are lower and lower seemingly uh

Every year I always Marvel at the beginning of the year how many underpar guys shootting at the century uh it’s essentially the same Golf Course um but guys keep shooting lower and lower and um yeah I mean I it’s uh I think winning you you got to keep

Putting yourself in position Time After Time excuse me and some of those weeks you get the right break at the right time you hit a couple putts that instead of going on the lip they go in and usually those are the weeks that that you win Zer nine tournaments into the

Season we’ve only had one guy inside the top 50 uh win do you have a a good explanation for why that is and if not can you make one up can I make one up uh n i mean nine events isn’t a really big sample uh I

Think there’s still a lot of golf to to to be played and we’re kind of getting into what I’d call sort of the thick of the season so um I imagine you start seeing some some of the higher rank players winning Ral what do you think’s at work

Here wow yeah it’s very interesting in and I can tell you the PJ tour desperately needs a big time winner with a big time performance this week um when I heard will zorus say you know that it’s great to see the firsttime winners uh and I think it is for the players I’m

Not sure it is for the fans as much uh I think the Signature Events were created to get the best players together as often as possible this is halfway through the signature event season now and we still haven’t seen the kind of results that would really say wow this

Has really worked out well if you think about the Arnold Palmer invitation Tiger Woods in a stretch from 2000 to 2013 won this tournament eight times in 13 tries that hasn’t happened recently PJ tour could really use something like that to happen but Tiger’s not in the

Field so this is going to be a big week to see whether or not a guy like Sheffer a guy like matoy you know can kind of respond and keep up with the schedule that uh they have had here which is is really good play we can sit here and I

Think everybody agrees the tour could use a Sunday Battle Royale with Ricky Fowler Rory mroy Jordan Speed ludvig oberg all the the the top guys going at it on Sunday afternoon but but Hollywood doesn’t write the scripts in this game if Hollywood did then Rory would have

Won last year not Kurt kit Tama uh I I do look I think lots of things can be true yes it’s true that just terms of box office they could use a um a good lineup this weekend with the mega stars but it’s also true what the players were saying it’s harder to

Separate yourself we saw it with Nick Dunlap uh the gap between Elite college players and the PG tour has narrowed considerably its equipment its speed training it’s it’s all of that the gap between the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour maybe not as wide as we thought

Matthew Pavone won uh the Farmers Insurance Tory bines the gap between the corn fery tour players and the PGA tour I think it is narrower than it has been guys are coming right off that tour e root and Jake knap and they’re winning that said I think there is a palpable

Sense out there given all that’s happened all the money that’s flowing that you guys want to be paid like stars you want all these guarantees go ahead and get what you can nobody’s knocking that then play like a star show up which leads to the other question who really

Are the stars on this tour who’s a legitimate Bonafide star well RO maoy number one who else without a doubt I think Sheffer is a star spe is a star I think spe is a star but it’s it’s a handful I would say here here’s the difference between the golf fans and a

Lot of other sports fans Rich sports fans in general love a couple things with their athletes they love Stars they love personalities they love Great Performances golf has fans that have an option other sports don’t necessarily and the option for golf fans is that they can go play the game particularly

On a nice weekend if you’re a football fan you can’t go out and play a Super Bowl you can’t go out and play even a women’s college basketball game so watching it on TV and getting your sports fixed uh is the way to do it there but with golf I really believe

It’s important to deliver the big time stories the big stars the big personalities especially in these Signature Events this is a very important week I don’t think there’s any doubt we would disingenuous if we said otherwise that some of the big names with big games left to go to live and

That has had an impact I me you’re talking about Dustin Johnson Brooks Kea Bryson deshambo when he drove the lake here at number six a few years ago they were going to build a business around him uh you know John ROM more recently I mean these are guys whether you like

Them or not that have big presence and you know you take those guys away uh that’s four or more fewer guys to dot these these leaderboards that’s clearly had an impact sure and you got to keep in mind that one of the important parts

Of a fan base in any sport is a rooting interest uh if you think about you know the NFL for example there’s a regional interest uh in National Football League teams that hold a certain fan base uh but you also have to have players that you root against and part of the issue

For the PGA Tour is that Liv has taken away almost all the villains we talk about the personalities going there but the villains have also gone there who’s going to root against Rory maoy or Nick Taylor or Kurt kyama for that matter and you wonder if some of the the star

Players have not been distracted uh by the business of the business therein phone calls at 800 in the morning talking about it on the Range you you know you can’t go four feet out here without talking about it it being what’s happening in the sport

  1. They have too much on their minds thinking how they hate the fact they are refusing to go to LIV because of some irresponsible comments they made or waiting too long to burn britches.

  2. Yes. The gap between other tours and PGA is narrowing. No doubt young players are coming out better prepared but that is not the major factor. The PGA has come back to the field more than the other way around. The PGA has a rectal-cranial inversion in the way they are handling things.

  3. There is a lot of upcoming new talent hitting the tour. Players are evolving their game. Better and better playerd will keep coming.

  4. Forget all the psychobabble, the reason they aren't winning is because they are not playing good enough. All the stars of today started as rookies.

  5. Golf and the rules can’t be tricked up to create superstars like the NBA. Just goes to show how dominant Byron, Jack and particularly Tiger were. Golf is damn hard and the ball can roll or bounce all kinds of ways over 72 holes let alone 20+ tournaments in a year. How the hell does a guy win 11 tourney’s in row or in the modern day win 18 majors like Jack as well as Tiger’s 4 majors in row across two calendar years.

    Is this game too hard?

  6. I agree that the gap has narrowed. However, I strongly feel that tiger in his prime would see a similar amount of success today..maybe slightly less

  7. Forget about the current "stars" on tour, their burnt rounds already (except Scheffler), if I had to pick one guy who could get to be a dominant force that'd be Aberg, and Wallace if I had to pick a second one. They're showing some promise as future strong gamers, my take, but I hope to see them playing on LIV vs getting wasted by the PGAT, I reckon 🙂

  8. Bags of 💰 will make a player lose any kind of edge…they're not Hungry!! No names winning these events will finish the rest of the dirt pile on the PG'Aint! Great golf…zero personality! Might as well watch @BustaJack

  9. I personally LOVE the rookies winning! And as Zalatoris said, the PGA is just deeper than ever. When a guy catches fire there is just no stopping him. BECAUSE they are better conditioned and more mentally tough. Do you honestly think has beens like Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson Dechambeau and Brooks Koepka would bring fans in? Don't make me laugh. They bailed because they weren't winning. Look at the record.

  10. Amazing to me that Rich almost gingerly mentioned that part of the reason is because players went to LIV. They mentioned four players as if Cam Smith isn’t one of the best players in the world. Let’s face it, 90% of LIV weren’t nobodies. They were somebodies. And those somebodies aren’t playing the PGAT anymore. The debate has become so principled that they’re now cutting off their nose to spite their face. I bet a good number of LIV players would have played the API if they could. It would have helped augment interest, viewership, buzz…

Scheffler is an amazing player. But rising pizza dough has more personality. And as such, he is perceived as bland – much like Cantlay.

I haven’t watched anything other than the PGA TOUR YouTube highlight videos this year. And for the record, I’m not in either camp. It’s just boring….

  11. DJ, Bryson, Rahm, Brooks were not villains. The only one can you call a villain was Patrick Reed. So get off this narrative That all the villains left to play LIV.

  12. maybe because other guys are hungrier the big names have made their millions while others are trying to make theirs. was surprised tiger never loss his drive to do whatever it takes to win for all those years.

  13. Okay so they are saying the “no name” players are winning the tournaments but they are not telling who came in top 10 each week.. the same names Rory, Scottie, Speith, Hovland… do you know how hard it is to win a golf tournament? I find it more impressive to consistently finish in top 10 each week

  14. Maybe the players should lose the nice personalities and talk a little smack, ‘oh I’m not worried about Scottie, he’s been having putting issues’ it’s probably why youtube golfers are getting more views and interest then some of these Pros. They’re one of us talking smack to our playing partners.

  15. They know why… they also know the only reason they are playing is by default. If they let all these youngsters take cards they’d get put in retirement.

  16. i've written it many times. the tour is primed for the ONE right now; someone to dominate. Y2K Tiger would wipe the floor with this generation.
