How Viable Would Trey Lance Be As A QB Solution For The Cowboys? | The Get Right

Much has been made about Dak Prescott and his playoff disappointments during his time as the Cowboys’ starting QB. The team acquired former #3 overall pick Trey Lance last season and some fans want him to take over, but how viable is that scenario?

There’s been a lot of conversation about Dak Prescott as this uh this organization of the Dallas Cowboys need to figure out what they are doing with him in his contract he currently set to have a what $59 million cap hit this upcoming season which would be second most and just seems entirely untenable

Right it’s just as much as quarterbacks are being paid taking that level of cap hit is something that is just not something that is done in this modern league and so obviously a lot of people anticipate the way that the Cowboys typically do things and the way that

They’ve talked for the most part the idea that they are going to just kind of extend him and he will continue to be your quarterback and that will happen that’s one thing I think a lot of people are you know especially if you do not believe in Dak Prescott as the

Quarterback of the team particularly if you’re in a place where you look at you know whatever extension like Jordan Schultz of bleach report was talking about an extension possibly being in the $60 million average average annual value and uh compared to like the what is it the uh projected salary cap we’re

Talking about what 24 25% of the salary cap going to the quarterback that’s a lot and if you were in a place where maybe you look at quarterbacks and you go that that percentage of quarterback pay is not worth it unless you are a very small in a very small group of

Quarterbacks okay and if that’s the case I think the Cowboys have have the option of maybe just going ahead restructuring moving some of that money around and making it so that that 2025 season is where you really get hurt and you’re able to work around this upcoming season

Dak Prescott plays out his final year and you probably have to let him walk after that should that be the case right let’s let’s say we go that way because I know a lot of people have asked for the opportunity to go that way a lot of

People are fed up with Dak Prescott we mentioned yesterday um that he is tied with Alex Smith at least um and someone else whose name I forget at this moment for you know the worst record in in the postseason if you if you subscribe to quarterback wins um as long as you have

Five games in the postseason so with all that being the case how viable is Trey Lance as a quarterback option if you’re going forward because that’s the question right okay if you do move on from Dak Prescott what quarterback do you go to right who do who can you get

And obviously the Cowboys went and traded for Tre Lance last year late in spring or late in um training camp and obviously we knew that he was not going to be the option then but with the way that he’s situated you have to you you

Have to get a feel for him at some point and maybe you know obviously spring or training camp is this year is going to be where you try and get a field for him what happens or do you think that it’s a possibility that he could show you

Enough that makes you feel comfortable that after this upcoming season you go with Tre Lance as your starting quarterback yeah Trey Lance is uh it’s an interesting one cuz what has he been in the league four years now and he has two attempts he thrown the ball 102

Times right backup here and there I think the most games played in 2021 he had six and I’m looking at his stats right now his his best game was against Houston where he threw the ball 23 times 69% completion percentage nice and had 249 yards so we haven’t seen much of a

Sample size I mean he’s had a couple games over 150 she been a lot of just like riding the bench so I think a lot of this comes on how much do we trust the quarterback building up stage and coaching staff to get a guy like that and I think there’s

A reason they brought him in here do you think they brought him in just for trade bait do you think they actually see a future with him no that’s that would be and look because you had to give up decent to get him so I don’t think

You’re going to be able to flip him for more no I and I got to be like honest if you if you have concerns about this front office in their organizational like decision making fair but I feel like it would be dumb to trade for Tre Lance thinking oh here’s trade bait

Right like I think the idea is here is here is an option should you get to that place to maybe see what you’re working with and I think a lot of people as soon as he was traded here there was we probably worked ourselves into a place

Where we thought okay he’s probably your backup in this upcoming season you can get a little bit of cap relief um saying thank you Cooper rush for holding this down and maybe you have an opportunity at this you know this quarterback in tre Lance you mentioned the idea that we

Haven’t seen a lot of sample size that’s because he hasn’t played a lot of football not just in the just in general yeah man but that’s kind of it was Co year right yeah yeah out of uh North Dakota state right and so with that being the case the idea with Tre Lance

Has always been he’s got some talent but he just hasn’t played enough football and so I do like the reason why I ask this I do think that hey man if if you are hellbent on the idea that Dak Prescott is going to be prohibitive in

The ways that he’s going to cost you know compared to what you’re ultimately going to get what are your Solutions and I think that that’s one that sits there in front of you I just wonder and this was a thing that I wondered when they

Traded for him you at what point do you give him a shot well exactly you have to find a way to get him rest but then also by the time that you have an opportunity to like get him out there to be the quarterback you’re already having to pay

Him some level of money outside of just that rookie deal because that he’s basically at that fifth year option already right yeah and and and one thing that I wanted that I kind of just thought of when you were saying that is could this be I might Adam mik keaster let could

This be a Jordan love situation where you don’t see the guy the guy in front of him is way way more highly thought of Dak Aaron Rogers I’m not saying he’s Aaron Rogers but just more highly thought of than the guy behind him that guy either gets pushed out because of

Contracts not playing well whatever it is and then it’s like oh we’re throwing this guy in here who was a late round not I guess not late round now but a guy that was on the bench that we didn’t think much of and all of a sudden he

Blossoms into something we hadn’t seen much of Jordan love except for sprinkles we had seen much of tre L step for sprinkles possibly I’m just throwing it out there be a situation where you don’t know when he plays a full season and you’re like it takes him a while to get

It he’s like oh this could be all right we don’t have to draft a quarterback he he’s unproven I think the the the tough part about it in that me out of it please I think I don’t even know if I’m just I’m just talking through it because I I

Think it’s an interesting point that you brought up and so I’m really just talking through it as we go the difference the distinction there would be Jordan love had all of those years in the system correct that’s a good point where I think Trey Lance has he’s had

This year where he’s been working with Scott toine the quarterback coach of your Dallas Cowboys all season and now I guess if you were to operate on this plan that we’ve kind of drawn up you have the opportunity to play him not this upcoming season so he’d have two

Seasons right one full training camp in this upcoming training camp that’s happening later in this like in August or what have you um and then you would have two full seasons where he’d be working at the backup and getting those kind whatever kind of reps or whatever

Kind of work you can find to have for him practice and those types of things and then you would be putting him in there and that would be somewhat similar to the idea of sitting a quarterback um and eventually getting him up there that would be something new and again 877 881

1053 is that something you’re interested in from 214 they say y’all are on the right track which I imagine that means a thumbs up in that way from the 682 they said start start uh well I’m guessing they start him and if he sucks you earn

A very high pick and jump in the pool I’m I’m not mad at I don’t and and me and Reggie debated this other shows have debated this it’s hard just to be like hey Dak get out and we’re just going to be fine it just it just doesn’t feel

Like something that quarterbacks have done but in thinking about it today one of the things I realize is that I think we are we’re starting to get to a place where in where we’re in a NFL that we have not that we’re not necessarily familiar with so we can’t just go with

What we what has always been done right and what has always been done is like look man if a quarterback reaches to a certain level of good and I do think Dak Prescott is above that level MVP R right you don’t move on from them and I think

That we’re starting to see places where people are considering the idea that now because of how much the quarterback makes not just wrong numbers but even percentage of the salary cap compared uh comparatively like if you’re not getting the edge I got to something we might need to narrow down that group of

Quarterbacks and the way that we view that just for reference Trey Lance is the 11th highest uh paid player on the Dallas Cowboys with a $5 million cap hit and that what I’m saying is like by the time you start him you would need to give him a different deal though correct

Like he would have to be and do you think you’d be able to get away with a deal and obviously it’s not going to be Dak level but do you think you’d be able to get away with a deal that’s Gino Smith level yeah yeah right Gino Smith

Level is good yeah you’re hoping he balls out like Jordan love and CJ and you have to pay him I think you’re fine with it you’re like oh yeah let’s go give your money I think that’s a little bit of shooting for the stars but uh I

The only reason I entertained that one the the theory that the fan text is because it feels like a win-win don’t think it’s going to happen this year but a year two whatever dax’s contract is up feels like a win-win he that be the 25 season yeah he plays good you’re

Obviously set he doesn’t play good you got a high draft pick so and then you forgot about Trey Lance so just something for you to chew on when you’re at when you’re at the house thinking about your cowboys tonight uh from the 682 they said y’all are not saying it

Loud enough for folks in the back 60 million we can’t we literally can’t again it would be it it’s more about the accounting when we come to like the salary cap and the way that you do this and you move it around but ultimately you will account for all that money at

Some point um and that that’s why if you sign somebody up you want to sign them up for a long as long time as possible so you can move that money around another thing I did want to talk about because we I think the idea is appealing

To a lot of folks how good do you think Tre Lance can actually be at that time because we have talked about the fact that he has been devoid of of playing time and when he has played he has not looked like he has grasped the systems

That he’s played in and that’s in that’s what KY Shanahan who notoriously has a fairly um a fairly quarterback friendly system I think is what we what we term it as yeah and the fantex points out a good thing 817 Green Bay has a track record doing this from Rogers to love to

To um Ro Brett Favre to Rogers to love which is a great point I don’t know if other teams can say they have that same track record but I’m just you know hypothetically speaking being optimistic you want me to be honest with you I just don’t have a gauge on him

He’s had his moment I’m like he just he has never played more than six games in a season so it’s like I just don’t have enough sample on him and even when he did that was in 2021 like in the last three years we have seen barely anything

Of him so it’s hard me to be like yeah he could be a top five quarterback he could be a bottom five quarterback I think my expectations would be somewhere closer to the bottom than the top but he like I think we could say that about a

Lot of quarterbacks that are good now we didn’t expect that coming out of their position they were in and then they kind of developed into something based on the system when you’re throwing the ball to CD lamb and you got a good run game and you got Tyler SMI than Zack Martin you

Might look better than you really are so it’ll be interesting I mean he was in a great system in San Francisco and still couldn’t flourish so that is a little bit of a red flag and what what did Shanahan come out and say not to long

Ago that he knew Brock predy was the best quarterback on the roster very soon that I mean of course it’s it’s uh it’s expedient to be able to say that in that moment but I mean if you take him at his face value which I think you you can in

That way yeah that I mean that that would be in some ways damning but I think it’s damning because of something that we knew which is he hasn’t had a lot of football under his belt and he needed that seasoning which is why it was kind of weird that the Cowboys went

Have got him because you knew that you did not have football to give him but here you are in a place and I I think that this it’s an interesting thought I still I don’t know how viable or how good of an option that is I do know that

There’s a lot of people that feel comfortable with the idea okay even if he’s bad now you’re in a place where you’re probably we’re you know in that place where now you’re playing the the game of be bad enough to be able to go into that whole cycle again

Is it for real yeah sincerely I hate just being right right honestly I hate where we’re at just good enough I and look I I’m not here to invalidate anybody’s experience of like hating that place I get it I do wonder if this ends up being like a grass screener situation

Where you go over there and you’re like damn I miss when we were in that place but of course that doesn’t necessarily have to be the say I have firsthand experienc one of my best friends is a bearss fan oh that’s nasty business and he’s like he’s like you you say that

Blake just wait till you just have losing season and coaching Carousel every year but he’s like it’s starting to turn up now they got all these all Pros on the defensive side and quarterback stuff and number one pick and it takes a while it takes patience

But I don’t think the Cowboys re be bad enough where they’re like consistently picking in the top three they got too many good talented players but they could be bad enough to get the eighth or ninth pick so there you go um what do we ultimately come down to is

Like I think it’s an interesting thought process one thing that I do know I don’t think the Cowboys have the stomach to be able to do that even though like they clear if you make that trade for Trey Lance it’s got to be within your thought

Process and I know that David Moore of the Dallas Morning News wrote the piece that I think a lot of people believe is like you know pretty well sourced inside the building the idea that the Cowboys could always go through the idea of just kind of restructuring that contract

Moving money around so they have the opportunity to compete in this upcoming season and then basically being in a place where now he you know is going to be a free agent I I think he’s got to win the QB Q qb2 job from Cooper Rush

First if he does that cuz right now we haven’t even seen him win that well if if you do not if you are not going to have TR Lance as your backup this past year why did why did you trade I 100% agree this is I love coup love rush time

But at this point you have three quarterbacks one you traded for I feel like this where you kind of have to be like all right CP I don’t even think you can get a good assessment on train lands if you do not move on from Cooper rush

And I don’t say that with any like dis nothing from Rush it’s just it’s more about Trey we got to he’s got to be getting every single uh spring training rep every single one every one it should be him taking the ball okay so I look I

I I find that to be interesting I’m not entirely out on that but I I still find it hard to shake the idea like that kind of like I guess old school in a way idea of you have a quarterback of a certain repute and you just kind of you make

Sure that you keep them because you do not just like move on from that but we might in a new day in the NFL and they might be more reasonable to consider the idea of what it looks like you know should you move on put me in QB I can

Spin it man ask my inter mural team good luck good luck with that cowboy fans this is what you’re asking for Blake Elliott Quarterback

  1. Lance to me is solid depth and an insurance policy. But let’s not forget cooper rush , he at least knows the system , which is huge in the nfl

  2. Dak is great but not good enough to win the games we need! He’s had the reigns for 8 seasons and no matter what you give him he has not been able to get it done… We can’t keep going up in money for a quarterback that needs way too much around him to be successful. To lose the way they did at home with a perfect situation shows he just can’t get it done

  3. Even if Lance isn't the QB of the future, he could be a bridge until we can draft one. I think, at this point, we know that Dak isn't the guy. Before you Dak simps hit me with "HiS sTaTs", can we be serious for a minute? Sure, he has some really high numbers. However, you can easily go look at those games and see that his stats come from two places. First, he hangs big numbers on horrible defenses (and we've had very squishy schedules for several years). Second, he likes to light the field up when the game is hopelessly lost and the opponent pulls their starters and/or starts playing prevent defense. Dak isn't a bad QB, but you can't compete against good teams if he's soaking up so much of the cap that you can't afford to field a cast of elite players around him. Extend him to lower the cap, you say? Sure, you'll get a year or two of lower cap from him, but look who else we have to pay. We'll be cutting key pieces after only one year.

  4. Packers moved on from Farve, gave Rodgers a big contract and Rodgers had less PT, yards etc. than Lance.

The question would be do the Cowboys "see something" that makes them think he could be great.

  5. Dallas deserves Dak, it was idiotic to give him the outer space contract. He is pedestrian against better defenses especially in the playoffs, they simply have another Romo. Draft a QB in the first round every year until they get a more mature QB with ability to play and adjust to defenses in the first quarter.

  6. None of this makes any sense. Lance was a first round pick who was beat out by the last pick in the draft.

Who cares about him being so bad that a high first round pick is on the table? How many first round picks have been misses?

Tom Landry dominated this division for two decades. He did that with stability at the QB, not dumping a 12-win QB to play roulette.

    Stop.

  7. What more is there really to know or learn about Dak after 8 years with literally the same outcome year after year? 12 win seasons 3 years running with a “Groundhog Day” or “broken record” ending to each season. Seriously, what more is there to glean?? So I guess you pay him 60 million a year to only have a winning record by beating bad teams in regular seasons. The familiar seems comfortable. The unknown seems risky. I guess we stay just good enough to keep Jerry’s pocketbook overflowing with “winning” seasons but no chance of a 6th Lombardi trophy.

  8. Lance is a better QB, then Dak he's never been given a chance by the Jones family, and Dollars Tree 🌳 Salesman Stephen Jones is a dumb bell nut case 🙄.

    Amen

  9. This year our mgmt thought we cld win it all. So Rush was needed to fill in reliably. Now I think we need Lance to be given every chance to be the #2 to prep for the future if we can't make a true run this year. Make or break year for Dak, coaches and then we must start young and get Trey in the starting mix for 2 years out and #2 next year.

  10. Dak has a no trade clause. I would not extend dak. I would bench Dak and start Trey and maybe Dak might just ask for a trade because he will be losing a season.

  11. Let him walk, he’s not worth it. I rather deal with Lance for a season and see what he can do. If he’s any good, great. If he no good, top five pick and get a QB….

  12. If he looks like he couldn't ĝrasp the system whenever he played for SF… He needed a lot of work when he got here…Does he get enough here? Can McCarthy develop him? While fighting for his job.

  13. Where is all these great first round picks?

Hell where are all these great QBs at?

    Especially winning Superbowls 😂

  14. THANK YOU!!! This is they type of conversation we need to hear, instead of all these fan boys running around! Now,
let’s get some old fashioned investigative journalism,
and find out how Trey Lance is looking??? More of this, please???

  15. Dak was arguably outperformed by Cooper Rush, which makes it exceptionally clear….. they may as well try with ANYONE else. Give Trey a shot and see what he’s got.

  16. I don’t understand all the Dak hate. 32 points is plenty to win 9/10 games. If anyone in Dallas deserves to get a fire under their ass it’s Micah Parsons & the defense for allowing 48 points.

  17. I'm a die hard Cowboys fan. And IMO I believe Jerry Jones is a Moron. And Dak is Garbage keeping the Cowboys in mediocrity.
